Hi, I have worked in HR for close to 5 years, CIPM and PHR certified.My first advice for a budding HR professional in Nigeria is to work and pray, giving both equal emphasis.I knew nobody in Nigeria yet I got great jobs while I was there.Listen, go online, search for hr manager cv, tailor the template to make yours, something organized and eyecatching,NO grammatical errors.do same for a cover letter, always send a cover letter with your cv, most people don't, it makes it seem you took an extra step,difference between an A and A-.
Now flood the Internet openings with your cv and cover letter, anything that has HR,apply;remember the violent take it by force.
Now, when you are not applying or praying, read the Nigerian labour law, what is pension calculation, gratuity,maternal leave,can you use excel well, brush up on your skills, soft skills like smiling, looking into people's eyes when talking,clear and audible voice ,good breath, smell nice, and sister, invest in a good suit, good heels and leather bag.You don't need more than one of each but let it be for interviews only.If you go to GE for an interview, you don't want them thinking,this one might steal our stuff here o,I have worked with NLNG in a contract, oil folks are normal like you and I but we human beings have the flaw of looking at the outside, God looks at the heart.Dress well.Nice hair, clean nails.
Practice your interview in front of a mirror.I am a gesticulator,if there's a word like that,so I had to be sure I am not pointing threatening at the interviewer. Use this to check yourself.
In a good way, imagine the interviewer poo-pooing, it helped me not to get to nervous, he or she is just a human being, smile and shake hands.Dont kneel down, don't bend your head in obeisance, reserve that for God and elders at home. These are your future colleagues.
Begin to thank God in advance, I am a Christian and I know the power of praise, maidear, start your thanksgiving now because with God on your side, you are victorious, shout thank You Jesus,I know You have done it!Alleluyah! It might be ridiculous to some,but the wisdom of God is foolish to man.
Now, have integrity.Say the truth,don't associate with the office gossips, don't collect free lunches or "gifts" from contractors, tell them you have more than enough.Pray to have a true christian as a boss, emphasis on true, every thief is linked to a church the's days, be wise as a serpent, humble and harmless as a dove.

Hi,I worked in Human Resources in Nigeria for over 4 years. CIPM is good for the basic Nigerian company but if your eyes are set on a top/company or any multinational,please take the PHR/SPHR and CIPD exams seriously. I have both CIPM and PHR and there's a vast difference in knowledge content that is practically useful.I am not bashing CIPM but as you grow in your career, broaden your outlook to internationally recognized certifications. My two cents.

Hello HR Practitioners, for those seeking online PHR/SPHR certification from HRCI, please note the following information;

1. For online PHR tutorial from a US based PHR certified professional, please send a mail to phrcertify@gmail.com

2. Kindly note that there is no Prometric centre in Nigeria, only in Ghana called Linear Assessment Services. You can get more info from the Prometric website through HRCI. This is where you will write your computer-based exam.

3. PHR/SPHR tutorial is for 6 weeks and costs N50,000 (lasts till December, 2015).

4. Students are to ensure internet availability as tutorials are strictly online.

5. PHR/SPHR is totally passable when students have an understanding of the USA Labour Law. Students should endeavor to remain abreast of the USA labour law changes.

6. Study materials, flash cards and practice questions will be used during tutorials and useful materials shared as well.
