Two Nigerians, a man and a woman, have been arrested over claims that they forced a Nigerian women into prostitution and used voodoo to keep their victims under their control, Spanish police said Sunday. The two suspects were arrested on a warrant issued by Norway after a Nigerian woman lodged a complaint against them in Oslo. Spanish police said the pair promised their victims, who were living in extreme poverty, a job and that they would cover their travel expenses. They would then force them to become prostitutes. The young Nigerian woman who filed the complaint had herself been lured in 2011 to Spain by a woman who promised her work. When she arrived in Spain, however, she was kidnapped and held in an apartment on the southern edge of Madrid. Her abductor then forced her to work as a prostitute in several Spanish cities, as well as Bordeaux in France and finally Oslo, claiming she was owed a 60,000-euro ($66,000) debt). “The ‘madam’ and her accomplices had control over her, using all methods of aggression and threats and resorting to traditional Juju voodoo practices, including animal sacrifices,” the police said. In these rites, the victims are forced to take a pledge of obedience, which they are then persuaded into believing that they would fall ill or become insane if they fail to obey, according to Amnesty International. The two suspects were arrested at their home with police finding false identity documents and several objects linked to the rituals there. Six Nigerians including four women were convicted in France last month over similar charges. Also in June, Spanish police dismantled a trafficking ring that they said used voodoo rituals to defraud their victims. Troops of the Nigerian Army have succeeded in dislodging Boko Haram insurgents from Faljari , a strategical point and stronghold of the Boko haram insurgents. The Acting Director, Army Public Relations, Col. Sani Usman also said the troops also destroyed the camps of the insurgents at Faljari village along Dikwa-Maiduguri road, Borno State on Sunday. He said Faljari was used by the insurgents as one of their logistic bases in the face-off with the troops. According to him, “Five vehicles heavily laden with Improvised Explosives Devices about to be unleashed into the society, four motorcycles, one Toyota Hilux mounted with Anti-Aircraft Guns, one Anti-Aircraft Gun and one General Purpose Machine Gun, three extra Barrels of Anti-Aircraft Gun, a box of Anti-Aircraft Gun Ammunition, 3 SIM cards and a damaged AK-47 Rifle” were recovered from the insurgents. Usman said the troops also destroyed five motorcycles decorated with terrorists’ flags and a Toyota Hilux vehicle mounted with Anti-Aircraft gun during the raid. He said the troops detonated and traced an IED with wires connected to the residence of a terrorist commander in the village. The Army Acting Spokesman said the insurgents had been occupying portions of Gamboru Ngala, Kala Balge, Guzamala and Dikwa Local Government Area of Borno State while the headquarters of Guijba Local Government of Yobe State was long deserted. He added that the troops also cleared towns and roads that were held by the terrorists and laced with mines such as Biu-Buni Yadi-Damaturu and Biu-Sabon Gari-Damboa roads and made them safe for pubic usage. He said that the troops and indeed the Nigerian Army would not rest until every portion of the Nigerian soil was liberated from the control of the insurgents. The military had dislodged the terrorist from Dikwa during a combined operation which involved the fighter pilots of the Nigerian Air Force and ground forces on Friday morning. More photos... Former military head of state Gen Yakubu Gowon, says “Nigeria is better off with Igbos.” He spoke while delivering an oration at the burial service for Chief (Mrs.) Chinyere Asika, wife of the former Sole Administrator of East Central State; just as the governor of Anambra State, Chief Willie Obiano, described the deceased as a woman who exemplified the virtue of patience, charity and humility. The service took place at the All Saints Anglican Cathedral, Onitsha, Anambra State. Gowon’s declaration was borne out of a deep appreciation of the commitment and sacrifice of the deceased and her husband, Ajie Ukpabi Asika, to the survival of Nigeria as one entity. The former Head of State recalled that when he proposed the post of Sole Administrator of East Central State, Asika told me, “I prefer to do this for the good of Igbo people.” He went on: “I was struggling to get an administrator for the newly created East Central State when the name of the late Ukpabi Asika came up. He was then a lecturer at Ibadan. When we met, I did not know which one of us was younger. But he exuded strength of character and understanding, and wanted to start work immediately. I cautioned him to think about it. I told him, `you must consult your brothers, and your wife to know if you would accept’. I came away convinced that this was the man I needed. “I did not know how to place his wife, Chinyere, but when she arrived from Kenya, she plunged head-on into the idea. She was a courageous woman, caring and humble. I remember her efforts in “Otu Olu Obodo”- a public service initiative which she used as a tool of empowerment for her Igbo kinsmen and women.” Obiano told the children and the Asika family to imbibe the virtues of patience, charity and humility from Mrs Asika, while urging the congregation and Ndi Anambra to remember “her good deeds and pray for the repose of her soul.” The service was attended by many prominent personalities including a former Minister of Defence, Gen. T.Y. Danjuma, who represented President Muhammadu Buhari. Source: http://nigeriainfohub.com/gowonnigeria-is-better-off-with-igbos/ |

Haruna Baba Jauro has been appointed the new acting DG of Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA). President Muhammudu Buhari, had only earlier this week appointed Calistus Obi, an Igbo by ethnicity, as acting director general/chief executive of NIMASA and now with no explanation put in someone from the northern part of Nigeria where he hails from. This sparked accusations in political circles that the president was biased in all his appointments. This comes after Buhari had appointed Mrs. Amina Bala Zakari as acting Chairperson of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) who remained in office despite the expiration of her tenure since July 21 2015. One politician from Anambra speaking in Anonymity told reporters that he and other igbos are extremely troubled by President Buharia's action on the leadership of NIMASA. Anybody who knows about maritime issues can tell you that Calistus Obi is very knowledgeable , said the source, a member of the Peoples Democratic Party. He added, Why would Mr. President remove him after just a few days, even though he was appointed in an acting capacity? What was the hurry in firing him? And it is interesting that Alhaji Jauros appointment is also in acting capacity. This is also now affecting the members of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) who told journalists of their concern that Mr. Buhari's appointments so far have been more than 90% in favor of northerners and Muslims. Mr Buhari had last week said that he would treat all regions of the country equally. After realizing the political implications of his reckless statement, the Nigerian president made a belated attempt to correct the statement. It’s said that during their visit to the land of the Free, that it was obvious that Buhari seemed to listen only to members of his inner circle, led by former Nigerian Defense Minister, Theophilus Y. Danjuma. Source: http://nigeriainfohub.com/ethnic-sentiments-buhari-accused-of-being-bias-in-appointment-of-nimasa-boss/ |
This is not good news for African ,The organisers of the popular big Brother Africa TV reality program have indicated that the program may not hold this year. This according to the organisers is due to lack of sponsorship. The organizers of the show, Africa Magic and Endemol have been unable to get sponsorship for this year’s edition of the show. The Manager of Multichoice Ghana, Anne Sackey confirmed to Razz Newspaper that they at Multichoice Ghana have received notice from MNET that this year’s edition of Big Brother Africa will not come off. She explained that MNET did not give them any reasons as to why they will not be airing the Big Brother this year, but she suggested it could be due to sponsorship constraints. “They didn’t give us any reason though, but I think it’s mainly because of cash constraints as we all know the show is very expensive to put up” she said. Anne Sackey said since the organizers don’t have a constant annual headline sponsor (s) for the show, it becomes difficult sometimes getting sponsors. “They don’t have fix sponsors on the show. Every year the sponsor changes, sometimes it’s Coca¬Cola, sometimes MTN and other companies from Ghana have sponsored before” she noted. Idris Sultan, 2014 BBA Winner, On further interrogation to shed more light on whether their inability to get a sponsor is a publicity stunt or not, she stated that MNET is a separate company and that they have their target and strategies so until they write to them, she can’t answer any more questions on their behalf. The governorship candidate of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) in Abia State in the 2015 elections, Dr Alex Otti on Friday said that unknown gunmen invaded his Abuja guest house in the early hours of the day, apparently to assassinate him. Briefing journalists at his campaign office in Umuahia over the unsavoury incident, the former bank boss said he escaped the assassin's bullet by 24 hours but a policeman on guard duty was shot dead. He said that in the last seven days he had been staying at the guest house located at Maitama area of Abuja and only left on Thursday for Abia State in order to attend the tribunal sitting in Umuahia. Otti is at the tribunal challenging the outcome of the April 2015 gubernatorial poll in Abia. According to him, the invading gunmen struck at about 2am on Friday thinking he was still around, adding that what could have been fate was left for the imagination, "In the early hours of this morning (Friday) I got information that yet-to- be identified people invaded my guest house in Abuja through the back fence, cut the wire mesh and scaled through the fence and made through to where I stay. "One of the policemen that guard the place was shot dead and the body has been deposited in the mortuary, if I had spent the day yesterday there, maybe it would have been a different story now,” he lamented. While pointing out that he was not suspecting anyone or group, Otti recalled that "There have been pockets of attempts on my life but not to this magnitude". He said that police have stepped in and launched investigation into the incident. Source: http://nigeriainfohub.com/narrow-escape-alex-otti-escapes-death-police-officer-shot-dead/ |
Former musician turned writer, Etcetera have said that God won't listen to Nigerian songs and thinks most Nigerian artistes are confused and bewildered. He says Nigerian artistes sing meaningless songs and that those who listen to Nigerian songs need to ask themselves why. “Shoki hey hey Shoki!” cries a voice from the radio to the beat of a nerve-wracking pandemonium that seems designed to drive you insane. A quick flick of the dial and “Shakiti bobo” is playing. The worse thing is that the raucous noise emitted by the artiste is no match for the loud, odious din coming from the beat. The lyrics are completely lost – which may not be regrettable to some – but the whole tumult sounds more like bad static than music. I tuned the dial again. This time it was Olamide screaming “VANESSA VANESSA.” As the last strains of the song died away, the OAP cheerfully and enthusiastically breaks in, “Yes, that’s for all you listeners out there. That’s the way we do it right here at your cool station. We personalise our playlist to make you feel cool.” Cool kor, cooler ni…. I felt like telling the OAP that his choice of songs made me feel SICK. This is simply today’s Nigerian music! Something is terribly WRONG with it! Yet millions around the country – especially the young people – listen to it by the hour. WHY? What is there about this music that is so gripping? How can something so meaningless hold millions under its spell? Why does it serve as a common denominator – as “the tie that binds” – for so many youths? Judging from how and what they’re saying and singing, it is easy to conclude that some of these artistes should be taken for mental evaluation! Music mirrors our emotions; it reflects our thoughts; it echoes our activities – it shows us the way we really are! Most Nigerian artistes are confused and bewildered – or they wouldn’t sing songs about not being able to tell right from wrong, or songs which purposely don’t say or mean anything, or which try only to “embody an emotional state that points indirectly to marijuana and crazy sex positions.” Music, just like other forms of art is like a social barometer. A strong and healthy society produces dynamic and stimulating music; a diseased and decaying society produces sick and decadent music. It’s a simple matter of cause and effect! This is now a SICK SOCIETY and, therefore, it produces SICK MUSIC. It’s just that simple! Both parents and the young people are to blame. My point is, we all don’t have to be a part of this sick society – or its sick music. Even talking about today’s gospel songs, many are lacking in purpose and quality. The gospel singers are forgetting that God believes in QUALITY. Look at the universe He created! He also believes in human improvement and GROWTH. “Become ye therefore perfect” (Matt. 5:48) and “Grow in grace and knowledge” (II Pet. 3:18), He commands. God wants His people to grow in the right kind of culture – the right kind of appreciation for the finer things in life. He says that mature Christians are “those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to DISCERN both good and evil” (Heb. 5:14). God wants us to EXERCISE our five physical senses. He wants us to learn what the true values for the enjoyment of the senses are. One of these senses is hearing. And one of the ways we need to exercise our hearing sense is in the appreciation of quality music. Quality in music involves, first of all, the way it is composed or arranged. Secondly, it involves how the music is performed. And thirdly, the setting (the place and occasion) in which the music is heard. You attend a concert only to see artistes with a hodgepodge of idiotic noise played from a CD and the audience seated at round tables like they are in a canteen, screaming with mouthful of small chops and ‘samosas’ as every new song is introduced by the performer. What utter nonsense! What is WRONG with us? How did we completely lose our sense of value regarding music? Do we even know the purpose of music? A mother justifies her daughter who’s listening to an obscene song by saying, “If you listen to the words of that one, it’s pretty rough. But it has a real good beat. My daughter says she doesn’t pay any attention to the words anyway.” Are we really that naïve? What erroneous reasoning! Go along with the crowd – even if the crowd is on the way to suffering, misery, pain, extinction? Do we think that these songs have no part in the tidal wave of promiscuity, venereal disease, illegitimate babies that are all over the country today? If you are one of those who like today’s Naija music, you ought to honestly and truthfully ask yourself WHY. Obama has been a public supporter of same- sex marriage since 2012. In an interview with Robin Roberts of Good Morning America that year, he said that he personally felt that gay couples should be allowed to marry. He’s since come out with more forceful stance on the issue, and addressed the issue during his second inaugural speech. “Our journey is not complete until our gay brothers and sisters are treated like anyone else under the law, for if we are truly created equal, then surely the love we commit to one another must be equal as well,” he concluded. Below is a press statement from the office of the former governor of Imo state Ikedi Ohakim. The statement reads… Following some recent developments around my person and the avalanche of misinformation and deliberate lies being peddled about me, I am constrained to issue this statement, first to douse anxiety of every well-meaning fellow who has shown concern and second, to alert members of the Nigerian public to a clear danger to my life. NEWSPAPER REPORTS On June 1, 2015, I travelled out of the country by LH 595 operated by Lufthansa with seat number 04K to honour a medical appointment and also attend my daughter’s graduation at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland. On June 02, 2015, a newspaper posted a headline that I had been apprehended and taken to custody by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for fraud and misappropriation of public funds. On inquiry, I discovered that the story was taken to the newspaper in question by an aide of a top politician in my state, Imo. Instructively, the story was carried by only the newspaper in question. A few days later, the same aide of the supposedly top politician took another fake news to some media houses that I sneaked abroad to dispose of my properties because of bankruptcy. THE PETITION AGAINST ME What is playing out began with a petition against me to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) by the same desperate politician in my state. The petition was written by a group he fabricated that goes by the name, Alliance For Good Governance. Those who are conversant with the politics of Imo state would recall that it was this same group that constituted itself into a vicious gang-up against my administration. It was this group, the Alliance For Good Governance, that sold the lie that I molested a Catholic Priest in Imo state. It was the same group that carried out the failed public demonstration against me in front of the EFCC Headquarters in Abuja. It was the same group, led by this same politician, that was used by those who were bent on denying me my victory at the April 26, 2011 governorship election, to kidnap an INEC returning officer, one Mr. Ngozi Nwoko, and took him to Bolingo Hotel, Onitsha, Anambra state, where he was locked up, thus preventing him from turning in the results from Ohaji-Egbema local government area which put me in a clear lead. The kidnap of Mr. Nwoko was the first script that led to the so-called supplementary election of May 6, 2011 during which the final script was acted out. One of the issues raised in the petition was the same carried in similar petitions shortly after I left office four years ago. For example, the petitioners demanded, among other things, that I should be investigated for misappropriating the proceeds from the N18.5billion draw-down from the Imo N40 billion Development Bond which my administration issued in 2010. Faced with the severe financial crunch of 2008 – 2010, my administration mustered the discipline and secured a N40b Development Bond in 2010 with a first tranche draw-down of N18.5b. Before we left office, we serviced our obligation to investors for the first tranche of the bond to the tune of N10.1b (principal + interest) and we left behind the sum of N13.3 billion from it, being part of the total of N26.6 billion we handed over to the succeeding administration. Up till this moment, the administration that took over from mine has not denied that I left behind N26.6 billion including the N13.3 billion from the Bond proceeds. And on this score, I challenge anybody, whether in government or outside government, to controvert this assertion. Even so, let me refer to a statement credited to the current administration through its Commissioner for Finance and as reported in the Daily Sun Newspaper of Wednesday January 23, 2013, page 10. The report quoted the Commissioner as saying that “the previous administration of Ikedi Ohakim had secured a bond of N18 billion for capital projects such as roads, water and Oguta Wonder Lake, but when we came to power, we decided to prioritize our projects. Out of the N18 billion that was secured, about N6 billion had been spent and we met only N12.5 billion and we convened a meeting of all stakeholders and got their approval to approach SEC to change the use of the fund”. The report further stated that the Commissioner disclosed that “the balance of the bond proceeds were channeled into critical areas of infrastructure development such as the building of 305 classroom blocks, building of ultra-modern general hospitals in the 27 local government areas of the state and construction of vital roads across the local government areas, informing that works were currently going simultaneously in the various communities”. Need I say more? CLONING MY VOICE Part of the script is to set me up against the federal authorities especially those manning the security agencies. I have it on good authority that, again, my voice has been cloned in a purported interview I granted to a radio station in which I supposedly lambasted some top federal government officials, including those heading the security agencies. The tape of this fake interview was then handed over to some of these key Federal Government officials. While I do not necessarily link this development with a recent incident with the EFCC, there can be no doubt that the intention is to put me on a destructive collision course with the federal authorities. But I believe this plot will also fail because those top government functionaries being targeted are not vulnerable to such evil machinations and antics. Still, I feel it is important to alert fellow Nigerians to this practice which is however not new in my state, Imo. Apart from that this method was massively deployed against me prior to the 2011 general election. Another former governor of the state and an elder statesman, also from the state, recently suffered a similar fate in the hands of these criminals using the same trick. Apart from voice cloning, these elements are also experts in forging signatures. They did it in 2010 when they forged the signatures of a prominent Catholic Archbishop, an Anglican Bishop and other prominent political leaders in the state in a petition against me to the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. But the plot failed because the latter, upon investigation, discovered that the Archbishop, the Bishop and the leaders in question never wrote any petition. The discovery was also to the bewilderment of those highly regarded top clergymen and leaders. I advise other public figures in the entire country to be on the watch because this habit is capable of spreading. THE DRAMA OF JUNE 18, 2015 Finally, let me seize this opportunity to make some clarifications over my so called arrest by the EFCC on Thursday June 18 2015. As a law-abiding citizen, I will always make myself available to any investigative agency because I have absolutely nothing to fear. However, let me seize this opportunity to state that it is high time we stopped trying to create disord between vital agencies of government like the EFCC and pubic officers, past or present. The agencies are there to do their jobs. Orchestrating newspaper reports on their legitimate lines of actions gives the erroneous impression that the agencies and their officials are out to witch-hunt. This is unfortunate and, in my view, it is one of the major reasons why there is so much myth about the accountability by public office holders. On the incident of Thursday, June 18, 2015, I would submit, with the highest sense of responsibility, that the drama was unnecessary. I never evaded invitation by the agency. This can be corroborated by the statement made by the commission’s spokesman, Mr. Wilson Uwujaren, as quoted in the media: “We were expecting a former governor of Imo State, Ikedi Ohakim, today (Wednesday) to come and shed light on some issues in an old case we have been investigating. We are about rounding off the investigation and we need him to clarify some issues but he didn’t show up; he may still come today or tomorrow” (see Daily Sun of Wednesday, June 17, 2015; page 13). So, the question is, if the commission knew or realized that I could still “come today or tomorrow”, why the drama just the following morning? In other words, the admission that they were still expecting me “today or tomorrow” negates the impression created by a section of the media that I was avoiding arrest. It means that by the time the spokesman made that statement on Wednesday June 17, 2015, I was not yet a subject for arrest; notwithstanding the fact that I was at the headquarters of the commission the same Wednesday, June 17, 2015 to submit a letter asking for more time in view of my health challenges; and which letter was duly acknowledged. There is no intention here to pitch my words against that of the commission which, as I noted earlier, is doing its legitimate duties. But I am compelled to make this clarification in order to erase the impression that Ikedi Ohakim was evading “arrest”. Let me repeat for the umpteenth time that I have no reason, whatsoever, to evade interrogation by any anti-corruption agency in Nigeria, or anywhere in the world, concerning my tenure as governor of Imo State. CONCLUSION Throughout my tenure as governor, we never hunted political opponents. There was no political assassination, no arson, no official of government disappeared. There was no impeachment of any kind or threat of impeachment. No senatorial zone complained of marginalization. No contract failed. No contractor ran away with the state’s funds. There was labour harmony. We never owed salaries as we made payment of salaries a first line charge. In short, there was law and order and Imo worked on one page. But contrary to the goodwill that existed while I was in office, I have since become an object of attacks and ridicule. Nigerians will recall that on May 15, 2014, directly after I declared interest to re-contest the governorship election of my state, my only house in Owerri was bombed in what was evidently, an attempt to assassinate me. As I write this statement, my portrait is still missing from amongst those of other former governors in a gallery created for that purpose at the Government House, Owerri. Still, let me state that in spite of the misadventure of some of these elements who see me as their only obstacle to ‘greatness’, I remain committed to the peace, progress and stability of Imo state in particular and Nigeria in general. I have implicit confidence that the vision, dedication, fear of God and honesty of purpose with which I served my people shall vindicate me. To God Be The Glory. The divisional headquarters of the Nigerian Police Force, Plateau State Police Command have arrested a 40-year-old man, Surulere Raphael, for cutting off his daughter’s finger on allegation that she stole his money. Mr Raphael was paraded on Friday at the police headquarters alongside one Ponjue Domsing, who was alleged to have killed his father, Mr. Domsing, for not buying him a motorcycle as promised. Raphael said he cut off his daughter’s finger because she stole his N1,500 and meat from her mother’s pot of soup. Two gunmen opened fire at a beachfront hotel packed with holiday makers yesterday killing 38 people, with 36 seriously injured. Majority of the people killed are British followed by Germans, then Belgians. ISIS has since taken credit for the brutal massacre. One of the killers, who has been identified as Abu Yahya Qayrawani, 23 (pictured above) was reportedly seen laughing and joking with holidaymakers, looking like any other tourist but used the time to carefully select the victims he would murder with a Kalashnikov hidden in his parasol. The were said to be his primary target. ‘He was laughing and joking around, like a normal guy,’ said one witness. ‘He was choosing who to shoot. Some people, he was saying to them ‘you go away’. He was choosing tourists, British, French.’ Tom Richards, a university graduate who was on holiday with his mother and younger brother, found himself face-to-face with a man with ‘long black hair and a beard’, between 20 to 25. He and his mother Sam had fled from the pool when they heard the shots ring out, but were confronted with the Kalashnikov- wielding terrorist inside the hotel, where they were sheltering with other guests. The gunman shot two people in the head, before turning his attention to Mr Richards. The 22-year-old told The Guardian: ‘He looked right at me, I thought I was dead.’ But instead of shooting Mr Richards, he shot the floor – allowing Mr Richards and his mother, who were injured by shards of marble, to escape to a nearby toilet. “I don’t know why he stopped. He could have killed everybody,” he said. Many tourists barricaded themselves in their rooms after the 23-year-old student opened fire.In another chilling account, Ibrahim el-Ghoul revealed how the killer had been smiling. The trainee mechanic, who works part-time at hotel nearby, said the gunman told him ‘I don’t want to kill you; I want to hit tourists,’ according to The Independent. The terrorist after he was killed by police Olivia Leathley, 24, a chef from Chorlton, Manchester, said she and her boyfriend escaped the massacre at the Imperial Marhaba hotel only because she was charging her phone. ‘We then heard a shot from inside the hotel. Somebody just shouted run so we sprinted off in all directions,’ she said. ‘The machine gun fire was so close, it sounded like it was right behind us. ‘I was then on the phone to my dad, screaming at the top of my lungs and telling him ‘I love you, I love you’. ‘My dad Glenn was saying ‘I love you’ and shouting prayers down the phone, begging ‘Lord, protect them’. We eventually found an office building and hid in a room. As soon as I got somewhere safe, I threw up. ‘I later came across a woman who said her husband had been shot in the stomach on the beach. He was bleeding heavily, but she had to leave him there.’ A hotel worker said a shoeless Yacoubi, who arrived on the beach by inflatable boat, had tried to blend in with the crowd. He added: ‘He opened fire with a Kalashnikov. He was a young guy dressed in shorts – like he was a tourist himself.’ Rafik Chelli, Tunisia’s secretary of state for national security, said the gunman – named locally as Yacoubi – entered the Marhaba complex through the pool area. ‘He entered by the beach, dressed like someone who was going to swim, and he had a beach umbrella with his gun in it. Then when he came to the beach he used his weapon,’ Mr Chelli said. Yacoubi was shot dead by the security forces. Because of the Ramadan religious period, there were few Tunisians on the beach and few children because most schools have yet to break up. Houcine Jenayah, a businessman, said the gunman arrived at speed on an inflatable Zodiac boat. ‘He opened fire and had grenades with him,’ said Mr Jenayah. ‘He hid his Kalashnikov behind a parasol that he had in his hand.’ Within minutes of the massacre, photographs had been posted on an Instagram account showing a middle-aged man wearing blue shorts lying face down in the sand with a pool of blood around his head. Father-of-three John Yeoman, 46, of Kettering, Northamptonshire, used a bed to barricade himself and his family in the room of his hotel. ‘We were in the pool when we heard automatic gunfire. People ran past saying there was an armed man on the beach,’ he said. Tweeting a picture of his barricaded room, he added: ‘Hope it’s enough. It’s been going on for 20 minutes. We blocked in our room. There are sounds of a gun battle.’ The final moments of the terrorist were captured on camera as, weapon in hand, he prowled the streets of Sousse. With the gunman dead, police pursued suspects through the streets of Sousse, which is about 90 miles south of the capital Tunis. More than three hours after the massacre an apparent accomplice was arrested near the motorway. Police were pictured detaining several men in the aftermath of the carnage but it was not clear last night whether the suspects were connected to the attack. While there were multiple accounts of what happened, most witnesses spoke of a lone gunman who was later shot dead by the Tunisian security forces. The U.S. Supreme Court on Friday made marriage for same-sex couples legal nationwide, declaring that refusing to grant marriage licenses to gay and lesbian couples violates the Constitution. The landmark ruling will produce the most significant change in laws governing matrimony since the court struck down state bans on inter-racial marriage almost 50 years ago. The majority opinion in the 5-4 decision was written by Justice Anthony Kennedy. “No union is more profound than marriage, for it embodies the highest ideals of love, fidelity, devotion, sacrifice, and family. In forming a marital union, two people become something greater than once they were,” Kennedy wrote. “As some of the petitioners in these cases demonstrate, marriage embodies a love that may endure even past death.” Kennedy went on to speak directly to the type of criticism that often comes from conservatives in pushing back against marriage equality. “It would misunderstand these men and women to say they disrespect the idea of marriage. Their plea is that they do respect it, respect it so deeply that they seek to find its fulfillment for themselves,” Kennedy said. “Their hope is not to be condemned to live in loneliness, excluded from one of civilization’s oldest institutions. They ask for equal dignity in the eyes of the law. The Constitution grants them that right.” A total of 36 states now permit gay couples to get married, covering roughly 70 percent of the US population. Today’s ruling means the bans must end in the other 14 states of Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, South Dakota, Tennessee and Texas. The decision capped a remarkably quick turnaround in public and judicial acceptance of same-sex marraige. In the past 18 months, court rulings struck down marriage bans in rapid succession, nearly 60 separate decisions in more than half the states. Today’s ruling overturned a decision from the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals in Cincinnati, which said states had legitimate reasons for maintaining the traditional definition of marriage. The appeals court also said it would be better “to allow change through the customary political processes” instead of the courts. Public opinion has shifted dramatically in recent years. The first Gallup poll on the subject showed only 27 percent approval for same-sex marriage in 1996. Gallup’s most recent poll, taken last month, showed 60 percent approval. http://nigeriainfohub.com/breaking-news-u-s-supreme-court-legalises-same-sex-marriage-nationwide/

He said a suspect had been arrested and identified. Full story below… A suspected Islamist attacker pinned a severed head covered with Arabic writing to the gates of a gas factory in southeastern France on Friday. French news agency AFP reported. One person is in police custody and is suspected of involvement in the attack, which also involved at least one explosion.Joelle Huillier, a local politician, told BFMTV. He is being questioned by police, she said. A source cited by BFMTV also said a severed head had been put in front of the company, next to which was found an Islamist flag. CNN has not been able to confirm the report independently. A man described as a witness, whose name was given as Patrice, also told BFMTV that a group of men carrying Islamic flags forced their way into the factory, beheaded a person and targeted gas tanks. Le Monde newspaper cited unidentified sources as saying that two people rammed a vehicle into the building, causing the explosion. Banners in Arabic that haven’t yet been examined were found at the scene, the paper added. The Paris prosecutor’s office said its anti- terrorist section was opening an investigation into the attack. It is investigating possible murder and assassination attempts by organized gangs in relation to a terrorist enterprise; destruction and degradation resulting from explosive materials by organized gangs in relation to a terrorist enterprise; and terrorist conspiracy to commit crimes against people, the Paris prosecutor’s office said in a statement. A spokeswoman for the company concerned, Air Products, confirmed there had been “an incident” at its Grenoble location. Spokeswoman Nicola Long said emergency services were at the scene. There was an explosion, she said, and a fire that has been put out. She was not able to give any information on any deaths or injuries. The company supplies gases for industrial use. Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve is making his way to the scene in the small town of Saint-Quentin-Fallavier, between Lyon and Grenoble. President Francois Hollande, who’s been at a summit of European leaders in Brussels, Belgium, will give a statement in the afternoon, the Elysee Palace said. Security has been heightened in France since an Islamist terror attack in January , when attackers targeted the satirical Charlie Hebdo magazine and a kosher supermarket in Paris.
