Sports / Why Super Eagles Of Nigeria Must Be Humble Against Cameroon by amoss: 12:43pm On Aug 29, 2017
The Super Eagles of Nigeria hosts the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon on Friday 1st September 2017 in an important FIFA World Cup qualifier. The match scheduled take hold inside the Godswill Akpabio stadium, Uyo is expected to products loads of fireworks as the Eagles looks to maintain their to-spot in the group.

The Eagles sit atop Group B with six points, after beating Zambia and Algeria in their first two matches, while are currently placed second with just two points secured from draws with Algeria and Zambia.

First of, these teams are African heavyweights and the records show that the Super Eagles lead in terms of statistics in all fronts. Both sides have met 18 times and the Eagles can boast of 10 wins while the Indomitable Lions have three, with five draws in between them.

Four of those 18 matches were in previous World Cup qualification campaigns, stretching way back to 1968 (for the 1970 tournament in Mexico) and 1989 (for Italy 1990).

Nigeria claimed two wins, Cameroon one, and one match was drawn.

Their most recent meeting was in a friendly encounter which ended 3-0 in favour of the Super Eagles of Nigeria with goals from Efe Ambrose, Moses Simon and Odion Ighalo although the Indomitable lions finished the game with 10 men.

That being said, it is however important to reckon with recent form of both sides which many will agree that the Eagles must indeed be humble going into this tie. Lets not forget the key learnings from the Bafana Bafana tie. South Africa came to Nigeria, saw and conquered the Eagles 2-0 on the same ground where the upcoming tie will he held in an Africa qualifier game in June this year. Against the Bafana Bafana, the message seemed clear to get the ball forward using the wings with Moses Simon and Alex Iwobi on each side of the flank. Between the first and fifteenth minutes, the Eagles attacked but were curtailed by Bafana Bafana side who defended stoutly.

Before the end of the half, the fire burned out while the visitors waited for every opportunity to burst forward each time they got hold of the ball which would have paid off in 41′ when Akpeyi dropped the ball from a cross.

Defensively, virtually all the players were playing together for the first time which showed in the coordination. Experience was lacking. Knowing fully well how deadly Tokelo Rantie was, he enjoyed much space most of the time. That is, there was no man-marking which was why he had the space to head home cooly. The wingbacks needed to be more adventurous but didn’t show much confidence in tolling that path.

Who says the Indomitable Lions cannot beat the Super Eagles in Uyo? Recall that the Cameroonians with a team many termed as the worst they have had stunned the continent by winning the Africa cup of nations in earlier in the year. The camp was unsettled owing to disciplinary issues just weeks before the tournament but the buy dug deep, believed and did the seemingly impossible. They presented a discipline team at the cup of nations and they won it.

Cameroon in their most recent outing also saw off Morocco in their Africa cup of nations qualifier in June 2017. The Lions dominated and showed hunger until Vincent Aboubakar struck to give Cameroon the lead on the day.

This is not to say that the Eagles should approach the match with fears, but with great caution as the world knows the Lions are never a push over. With the likes of Captain John Obi Mikel, Odion Ighalo, Leon Balogun and Victor Moses are back in the squad, it is expected that the team gets its heart together and have some cohesion again as displayed in their first two world cup qualifier games.

The indomitable Lions of Cameroon on the African scene have always proven to be a very resilient and resolute side any day any time, hence, the Super Eagles must thread with caution and avoid all distractions, put the last game behind and focus on a killer mission this time. The Eagles must therefor approach this tie with all humility and take on the Lions like its the deciding match of the group.

Music/Radio / This Nigerian Startup, Mixtapes Factory Wants To Pay Artistes Royalties by amoss: 3:13pm On Aug 26, 2017
The name Mixtapes Factory might not ring a bell at the moment, but the idea behind the startup will resonate amongst its target audience.

The Nigerian music industry can indeed be rewarding for those who are willing to do it right.

The Business Director of Mixtapes Factory, Mr. Olatunbosun Musa (Bosun Parrot) in an exclusive interview with PageOne.ng reveals how his team intends to pay maximum royalties to Artistes, DJs, Labels, Publishers and Music Services in one comprehensive platform through negotiated licenses and ground-breaking technology.

What is Mixtapes Factory all about?
The Mixtape Factory platform is designed to facilitate the marketplace between DJs, Rights Holders and Music Services through our negotiated licenses and ground-breaking technology, DJs, Labels, Publishers and Music Services can create and earn together, in one comprehensive platform. A non-stop mix is a compilation of music recorded in a specific order and rhythm to the delight of listeners. This is usually a flow of music to keep events such as family parties, get-together, celebrating success etc in digital and physical copies.

How and why did you come up with this idea?
Well, when I switched career from engineering/production world to the entertainment Industry back in the year 2012, I took time to study and see where I could fit in better because of my passion for the music industry and knowing fully well that there were many other young chaps who were doing well in the industry. I never used to like competition but I challenged myself and decided not to go with the flow of the current. I simply discovered that the entertainment industry was categorized into two segments the mainstream “STREET” and the upstream “INDUSTRY” the mainstream is what I call an open battle field, unstructured, unauthorised and unprofessional where everything goes which was where I choose. I was involved in the practice for about three years just to study the whole process, understand the challenges, and the reasoning of the players in the system that is, the Djs, Marketers and the Artistes. I even went as far as managing some of the top marketers and I did projects that were marked as success within the same circle, and I was able to discover the root cause of the challenge of the mainstream, which was very far from piracy. So I challenged myself and took responsibility with my team to provide effective, structure and legal practice of music distributions that provides a win-win situation for everyone involved in the creation of music from Song Writers, Producers, Artistes, Marketers and Vendors. A situation where everyone can be rewarded for their contribution and impact. So, in a nutshell, I just want to be significant and impact positively on my Industry that’s the zeal.

Some artistes are already making money, what do you intend to do differently to put more money in their pockets?

Making profit is quiet different from maximizing profits. This is not just about the artistes, it’s about all the professionals involved in the 360° sequence of music business from the birth of the idea of a sound till it is been distributed across its reach. A lot of professionals have put in something and they need to be rewarded as well. Before you can move the body into action you have to move the mind first, it’s a moral issue, ‘all man they hustle for the bread.’ We can have marketer and vendor pushing 2017 machines/cars too and on same Awards platforms with the artistes. What we are doing differently to make them more profits is that we promote good music collectively via non-stop selections both physical and digital copies across the globe and they all get their royalties more African sound to the world unlike the archaic system where artists and investors pays a lot of money to push and the job wouldn’t be done well as they wish with no royalty.

What level of support have you received from authorities in the music industry?
This is Nigeria, a country where you have to push yourself and your ideas well by yourself. Let us say in some advanced countries where everything seems ‘normal’, you may need to push a good idea that will impact the industry and add great value to about 100% rate, but trust me, here you may have to give it 900%. We already have Copyright Society of Nigeria (COSON) support. They acknowledged the Mixtapes Factory project and rated it very high. COSON’s Managing Director Mr. Angus Chinedu also said it has been a solution to the music challenge the industry in facing with piracy. We are still in talks with other relevant bodies in the industry as well.

How are the artistes, DJs and the parties involved reacting to this development?
It’s a dream come through for them all, only a few marketers who haven’t seen the huge advantage and benefit of what we are introducing. They are still grumbling on a low. *Smiles*

This project is capital intensive, how did you raise money to finance it?
Like I said, Mixtapes Factory is all about team work really, I am only privileged to lead. We have professionals working on the project and we are all partners ranging from Legal, Research, IT specialists, Public Relations, Business Developers etc. In terms of finance, we have been funding majorly from within and we are reaching out to prospective investors as well.

Are you also looking at raising more money?
Sure the dream is to take it beyond this clime. We are looking at injecting some more just so we can achieve our ultimate aim.

What has been the greatest challenge while working on the project?
Life itself is a big challenge, but to hit the nail on the head, finance has been one of the major challenges. You know how it is when you have an idea and some people say it to your face that it’s not possible. I and my team have been very focused and resolute. So we told ourselves funds won’t stop this project a year ago and we channeled our energies into a driving force that keeps us winning. And I will say this project is blessed with a great team so we able to overcome any kind of challenges ‘cos they only motivate us to push more.

How do you hope to measure the amount to pay a particular artiste or DJ.
We have a transparency and control system where all sales activities are been monitored from production to distribution. Every artiste and DJs have an account where they can access their personal sales and royalty figures. Mixtapes Factory is practically a system where artistes can also check how their songs are progressing in each region and locality. They can also predetermine which track is fast selling and to what area or location to help them focus.

What is the plan to drive the market for Mixtapes Factory that is, how and where do you plan to sell?
We are selling both on physical and digital platforms. We are also engaging our local vendors, Malls, Eateries, Saloon and marketers in the physical distribution where they will be licensed to distribute.

Foreign Affairs / Former U.S Judge David Black Daugherty Jailed For Role In USD550 Million Fraud by amoss: 11:11pm On Aug 25, 2017
A former social security administrative law judge (ALJ), David Black Daugherty has been sentenced to four years in prison for his role in a scheme to fraudulently obtain more than USD550 million in federal disability payments from the Social Security Administration (SSA) for thousands of claimants.

Acting Assistant Attorney General Kenneth A. Blanco of the Justice Department’s Criminal Division, Special Agent in Charge Michael McGill of the Social Security Administration-Office of Inspector General’s (SSA-OIG) Philadelphia Field Division, Special Agent in Charge Amy S. Hess of the FBI’s Louisville Field Division, Special Agent in Charge Tracey D. Montaño of the IRS Criminal Investigation (IRS-CI) Nashville Field Office and Special Agent in Charge Derrick L. Jackson of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services-Office of the Inspector General (HHS-OIG) Atlanta Regional Office made the announcement.

David Black Daugherty, 81, of Myrtle Beach, S.C., was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Danny C. Reeves of the Eastern District of Kentucky, who also ordered Daugherty to pay restitution of over USD93 million to the SSA and HHS. Daugherty pleaded guilty in May 2017 to two counts of receiving illegal gratuities.

According to admissions made as part of his guilty plea, beginning in 2004, Daugherty, as an ALJ assigned to the SSA’s Huntington, W. Va., hearing office, sought out pending disability cases in which Kentucky attorney Eric Christopher Conn represented claimants and reassigned those cases to himself. Daugherty then contacted Conn and identified the cases he intended to decide the following month and further solicited Conn to provide medical documentation supporting either physical or mental disability determinations. Without exception, David Black Daugherty awarded disability benefits to individuals represented by Conn – in some instances, without first holding a hearing. As a result of Daugherty’s awarding disability benefits to claimants represented by Conn, Conn paid Daugherty an average of approximately $8,000 per month in cash, until approximately April 2011. All told, Daugherty received more than $609,000 in cash from Conn for deciding approximately 3,149 cases.

As a result of the scheme, Conn, David Black Daugherty, and their co-conspirators obligated the SSA to pay more than USD550 million in lifetime benefits to claimants based upon cases Daugherty approved for which he received payment from Conn.

Daugherty was indicted last year, along with Conn and Alfred Bradley Adkins, a clinical psychologist. The defendants were charged with conspiracy, fraud, false statements, money laundering and other related offenses in connection with the scheme.

Conn pleaded guilty on March 24, to a two-count information charging him with theft of government money and paying illegal gratuities, and was sentenced in absentia on July 14 to 12 years in prison. Conn absconded from court ordered-electronic monitoring on June 2, and is considered a fugitive. He remains under indictment. On June 12, Adkins was convicted after a jury trial of one count of conspiracy to commit mail fraud and wire fraud, one count of mail fraud, one count of wire fraud and one count of making false statements. Adkins is scheduled to be sentenced on September 22.

Sports / Raphew Reed, American Track Athlete And Paralympic Gold Medalist Jailed For Frau by amoss: 3:58pm On Aug 25, 2017
Acting United States Attorney Corey R. Amundson of the Middle District of Louisiana announced that RAPHEW T. REED, JR., age 32, of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, has been sentenced to serve forty eight (48) months in federal prison as a result of his convictions for false representation of a Social Security number and wire fraud.

At yesterday’s sentencing, Judge John W. deGravelles further ordered REED to make restitution to his victims totaling $140,973.75 and pay $200 in special assessments. Additionally, REED will be required to forfeit $125,000 in proceeds from his crimes. Following his release from prison, REED will be required to serve a 3-year term of supervised release.

Raphew REED is a resident of Baton Rouge, Louisiana. As REED represented at the sentencing hearing, he is an accomplished track and field athlete, having competed at the collegiate level for the University of Mississippi, in the Paralympic Games as a member of the United States Track & Field Team, and ultimately as a professional track athlete. After his track career ended, REED returned to Baton Rouge and entered the world of finance, holding himself out as a financial advisor and as someone who could assist individuals and businesses in obtaining credit and financing.

Ultimately, REED turned to fraud. As REED has admitted, in May of 2012, he knowingly provided a federally insured credit union with a false Social Security number and false documents that misrepresented his identity, income, and credit score, in an attempt to secure a loan. When that scheme failed, from late 2012 through April 2013, REED executed a scheme to defraud another company, which, on November 27, 2012, wired $125,000 to REED. REED fraudulently diverted the funds to his friends, family members, others to whom he owed money, and to another one of his own bank accounts. In 2013, when the victim repeatedly asked REED to return the funds, as he had promised he would do, REED falsely represented to the victim that he was in the process of returning the company’s funds.

During the sentencing hearing, the Court found that REED’s fraudulent conduct spanned several years. In fact, REED defrauded another victim in June of 2014—a former teacher of REED’s in Baton Rouge who believed, based on REED’s representations, that he would invest her money in a hedge fund. Then, in the spring of 2015, REED defrauded a technology company in Los Angeles, California, by making false representations and causing the company to incur expenses based on the false pretense that REED would purchase the company. In total, REED’s scheme had an intended loss of more than $200,000, not counting the potential loss associated with several fraudulent foreign securities and bonds that REED attempted to deposit at various financial institutions during the same time period described above. These fraudulent foreign bonds had a total face value in the hundreds of millions of dollars.

Acting U.S. Attorney Amundson stated, “Thankfully REED’s string of colorful schemes—all of them fraudulent—has finally come to an end. REED’s conduct justifies every day of the lengthy sentence that the Court handed down in this case. We appreciate the hard work of our law enforcement partners to put a stop to REED’s conduct and bring this serial fraudster to justice, and we will continue to aggressively pursue others who would attempt the same type of criminal conduct.”

FBI Special Agent in Charge Jeffrey Sallet stated, “This case is an excellent example of the dedication and focus exhibited by the FBI, United States Attorney’s Office, and law enforcement partners throughout this investigation. This outcome should serve as a deterrent to those who attempt to defraud others, particularly those who attempt to use deceit and sophisticated means to avoid prosecution.”

Business / Nigeria’s Ecommerce Potentials And The Reality by amoss: 8:50am On Aug 21, 2017
Last week, Nigeria was declared to be the most important market for eCommerce in the entire continent of Africa.

The report alluded to the high growth and adoption of shopping malls and modern retail system across the country. As it stands, Nigeria now has over 50 shopping malls across the country with over 70% situated within the Southern part of the country.

This is a no-brainer as Nigeria has always been the number one country in the entire African continent with the highest economic potentials for investors to latch on.

It is also instructive that the report is spot-on to spot the linkage between the rise of shopping malls and opportunities for eCommerce. This was the similar scenario in Europe and in the United States before the rise of Amazon and other eCommerce companies.

One fact the research failed to mention was whether the rate of growth experienced by eCommerce startups was close to the potentials in the market. This is negative given the dire positions of virtually all the eCommerce ventures in Nigeria.

However, for obvious reasons, Nigeria has continued to underperform below behind every analyst predictions and targets. For many years, Nigeria’s infrastructure capital (tangible and intangible) has been developing behind the required benchmark. As opposed to its rival, South Africa where basic supporting structures are continually-improving, many states in Nigeria are still in their subsistence level to support modern retail let alone a viable eCommerce sector. To realize potentials in Nigeria’s eCommerce market, the infrastructure of power, transportation (diversified), processes, policies and talents must not only develop but in a sustainable way.

Many eCommerce companies went ahead to burn millions of dollars (billions of Naira), because the superstructure upon which they built their system was not only weak but some mostly a non-existence.

As at this moment, Nigeria’s eCommerce sector is responsible for less than 0.1% of total retail sales across the country. The current recession which further disrupted the revenue of eCommerce companies has further diminished these statistics.

Nigeria will only realise the abundant potential in eCommerce when the sine qua non is in place.

Politics / Full Text Of President Buhari’s Return Speech by amoss: 7:37am On Aug 21, 2017
Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari, on his return from his London medical trip after spending about a 100 days addressed the nation. The President who left Abuja on May 7, arrived Nigeria on Saturday August 19, 2017.

Here is the full text of the Buhari’s return speech to Nigerians.

My dear citizens,

I am very grateful to God and to all Nigerians for their prayers. I am pleased to be back on home soil among my brothers and sisters.
In the course of my stay in the United Kingdom, I have been kept in daily touch with events at home. Nigerians are robust and lively in discussing their affairs, but I was distressed to notice that some of the comments, especially on social media, have crossed our national red lines by daring to question our collective existence as a nation. This is a step too far.

In 2003 after I joined partisan politics, the late Chief Emeka Ojukwu came and stayed as my guest in my hometown Daura. Over two days we discussed in great depth till late into the night and analyzed the problems of Nigeria. We both came to the conclusion that the country must remain one and united.

Nigeria’s unity is settled and not negotiable. We shall not allow irresponsible elements to start trouble, and when things get bad they run away and saddle others with the responsibility of bringing back order, if necessary with their blood.

Every Nigerian has the right to live and pursue his business anywhere in Nigeria without let or hindrance. I believe the very vast majority of Nigerians share this view. This is not to deny that there are legitimate concerns. Every group has a grievance. But the beauty and attraction of a federation is that it allows different groups to air their grievances and work out a mode of co-existence.

The National Assembly and the National Council of State are the legitimate and appropriate bodies for national discourse. The national consensus is that, it is better to live together than to live apart.

Furthermore, I am charging the Security Agencies not to let the successes achieved in the last 18 months be a sign to relax. Terrorists and criminals must be fought and destroyed relentlessly so that the majority of us can live in peace and safety.

Therefore we are going to reinforce and reinvigorate the fight not only against; elements of Boko Haram which are attempting a new series of attacks on soft targets; kidnappings; farmers versus herdsmen clashes; in addition to ethnic violence fuelled by political mischief makers. We shall tackle them all.

Finally, dear Nigerians, our collective interest now is to eschew petty differences and come together to face common challenges of economic security, political evolution and integration, as well as lasting peace among all Nigerians.

I remain resolutely committed to ensuring that these goals are achieved and maintained. I am so glad to be home. Thank you and may God bless our dear Nation.

Crime / Nigerian Hacker Obinna Obioha Jailed In The U.S For Stealing Millions Of Dollars by amoss: 8:57am On Aug 18, 2017
Obinna Obioha, age 31, and a citizen of Nigeria, was sentenced to serve 51 months in prison for operating a fraud scheme that stole millions of dollars from businesses in the United States and other countries.

The announcement was made by Acting United States Attorney Grant C. Jaquith and Vadim D. Thomas, Special Agent in Charge of the Albany Field Office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

https://pageone.ng/2017/08/18/obinna-obioha-jailed-us-millions-dollars/

“Obioha, working from Nigeria, was a central figure in a fraud scheme using digital disguises and deceit to bilk businesses out of millions of dollars. We will continue to track down and bring to justice cyber criminals like Obioha no matter where they operate. I thank the FBI for its terrific work in this case identifying and apprehending Obioha,” said Acting United States Attorney Grant C. Jaquith.

FBI Special Agent in Charge Vadim D. Thomas said: “These schemes can rob individuals and businesses of their livelihood. Cyber-crime is a serious threat and the FBI is prepared to go to any lengths to apprehend those like Obioha.”

As part of his guilty plea to wire fraud in April 2017, Obioha admitted that, while in Nigeria, he worked with and instructed others to hack into computers and email accounts used by dozens of victims in the United States and around the world. The organization infiltrated victims’ computers and email accounts using malicious software (“malware”). After monitoring victims’ information to identify imminent commercial transactions, Obioha and his associates created knockoff email addresses that appeared similar to – but varied slightly from – victims’ legitimate email addresses.

Obinna Obioha and his associates used those bogus email accounts to send fraudulent invoices to victims, instructing them to wire funds to bank accounts controlled by Obioha and his associates, under the pretense that the wires were payments for actual deals that had been previously negotiated by the victims. Obioha admitted that between January and September 2016, he was involved in at least 50 wire transfers, and that about USD6.5 million was sent by wire to bank accounts that he and his associates controlled. The accounts received money from fraud victims in New York, Florida, Illinois, Ohio, and Texas, among other places.

During today’s sentencing, U.S. District Judge Donald N. Hurd described Obioha as “right in the middle of the action” in “very sophisticated criminal activity” designed to achieve “millions of dollars in illegal funds.”

Obioha was arrested on October 6, 2016, after flying from Lagos, Nigeria, to JFK International Airport. He has been in custody since that time.

Sports / Revealed: How New Southampton FC Owners Got Funds To Buy The Club by amoss: 1:44pm On Aug 17, 2017
ew owners of Southampton FC Gao Jisheng are said to have received loans from a Chinese government-backed bank in Hong Kong for funding of U257 million takeover of the English club.

The Chinese businessman Jisheng Gao and his family bought 80% stake in the club. This was contained in an official statement by the club’s owner Katharina Liebherr who made this announcement in a letter to the fans.

Earlier in the year, Gao’s company Lander Sports Development said it had agreed a deal with the Saints, but the partnership is now a personal investment.

The Chinese investor group led by Lander Sports Development Co. Chairman Gao Jisheng settled the bulk of the acquisition cost with a loan from Hong Kong’s Nanyang Commercial Bank Ltd, report on Bloomberg says.

The borrowing is backed by some of Gao’s assets outside of China, including those in the former Portuguese colony of Macau, the people said. Nanyang Commercial Bank was bought last year by China Cinda Asset Management Co., a financial group whose biggest shareholder is the Chinese central government.

By obtaining offshore financing in Hong Kong, Gao skirted a Chinese regulatory clampdown on companies buying trophy assets overseas like sports teams, film studios and luxury hotels. The rising government scrutiny has stymied attempts by prominent dealmakers including Dalian Wanda Group Co., which saw its acquisition of a U.S. television producer collapse after it faced difficulties transferring money out of China.
Sports / This Is Why Dangote Has Not Bought Arsenal FC by amoss: 12:57pm On Aug 17, 2017
Africa and Nigeria’s richest, Alhaji Aliko Dangote has once again confirmed his interest in taking over at English football club, Arsenal FC, but that will be after completing the multi-billion dollar refinery project in home country.

The cement business mogul in an interview with Bloomberg revealed a his business plans both home and abroad where he particularly mentioned that he would looks to invest around USD20 billion to USD50 billion in the United States and Europe by 2025, in the renewable energy and petrochemicals industries.

https://pageone.ng/2017/08/17/dangote-bought-arsenal-fc/

“Yes, but I don’t want to go after Arsenal until I deliver the refinery. Once I deliver, I will go after Arsenal.”

In the past, there have been several reports of the 60-year old Nigeria billionaire having interest in some other English clubs, but he stated categorically that Arsenal FC is where is heart has always been and nothing has changed.

“I don’t change clubs. Even when Arsenal isn’t doing well I still stick by them. It’s a great team, well-run. It could be run better, so I will be there. I will wait. Even if things change I will take it and make the difference going forward.

“In the mid-’80s. I was introduced to a man named David Dein, who was Arsenal’s vice chairman, through a friend of my uncle’s. He was the first person who showed me a cargo of sugar in 1980, when I started importing. I started buying sugar, and he started taking me to the stadium.”

Speaking on what he thinks about owners of Arsenal FC Kroenke and Alisher Usmanov if they would sell their stakes, howe he intends to turn the fortune of the club around should he take over, Dangote said: “Well, you know anything is possible in this world. If they get the right offer, I’m sure they would walk away. We’ll be in a position to give them the right offer. They will not hold Arsenal forever. Someone will give them an offer that will make them seriously consider walking away. And when we finish the refinery, I think we will be in a position to do that.

“The first thing I would change is the coach. He has done a good job, but someone else should also try his luck.”

Alhaji Aliko Dangote is valued at USD12.3 billion according to Bllomberg billionaire index at mid August.

Business / Dangote Denies Interest In 9mobile, To Invest About USD50 Billion In U.S, Europe by amoss: 10:59am On Aug 17, 2017
Africa’s billionaire businessman Aliko Dangote has stated that the group is not interested in investing in the telecommunications industry, rather it is looking at other opportunities.

Dangote said the group plans to invest about USD20 billion to USD50 billion in the U.S. and Europe by 2025, in the renewable energy and petrochemicals industries.

The Nigerian businessman revealed that over 60% of the group’s investment will be out of Africa. The 60-year old also said he aims to diversify into these territories for the first time in 2020 following the completion of almost USD5 billion of agricultural projects and an USD11 billion oil refinery in Nigeria.

Recent reports have made the rounds about the cement giants investing in telecommunications business especially following the exit of Mubadala, a major stakeholder in Etisalat Nigeria. While admitting that there are key players in the telecommunications industry, Dangote stated that the business is focused on other industries and ruled out the possibilities of investing in that sector.

“When I look at telecoms, for instance, I think that would be very tough for us,” he said. “Some players have been in this market for 17 years already. There’s no way you can go and jump over somebody after 17 years of their hard work. So I think we would pass when it comes to telecoms today. There are other businesses that we understand better.”

“Beginning in 2020, 60 percent of our future investments will be outside Africa, so we can have a balance,” said Dangote, worth USD11.6 billion, according to Bloomberg’s Billionaires Index. Dangote Group’s major investment will be in the U.S. and Europe, he said.

Business / Billionaire Bill Gates Donates USD4.6 Billion, His Largest Since Year 2000 by amoss: 10:30am On Aug 15, 2017
merican Billionaire, Bill Gates has made his largest donation since the year 2000, giving away Microsoft Corporation shares that accounted for 5 percent of his fortune.

Gates donated 64 million of the software maker’s shares valued at USD4.6 billion on June 6, according to a Securities & Exchange Commission filing.

While the SEC filing did not disclose the gift’s recipient, it is expected that the money will go to Gates’ charity. The Chronicle of Philanthropy estimates that this would bring the total of Gates’ donations to the foundation to more than USD18 billion.

Bill and Melinda Gates have given away about USD35 billion of stock and cash since 1994, based on the value of the shares at the time of gifts, according to a review of two decades worth of Gates Foundation tax returns, annual reports and regulatory filings, as reported by Bloomberg. Gates created the Giving Pledge in 2010 with billionaire investor Warren Buffett, and the pair have been joined by 168 others who’ve promised to give the majority of their wealth to charity.

Bloomberg further reported that Gates has probably directed more than 700 million shares of Microsoft into the foundation, adjusting for stock splits. Those would be worth about US50 billion today had he held onto them. The June gift represents 38 percent of his holdings in the company and is the latest in a long line of Microsoft share disposals that have whittled his stake down from 24 percent in 1996 to 1.3 percent today.

Bill Gates is the richest person on earth after the donation with a fortune the Bloomberg Billionaires Index values at USD86.1 billion. William Henry Gates III is a co-founder of Microsoft and is an American business magnate, investor, author and philanthropist. In 1975, Gates and Paul Allen launched Microsoft, which became the world’s largest PC software company.

Jobs/Vacancies / NNPC Raises Alert On Recruitment Scam by amoss: 9:02am On Aug 10, 2017
The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, said a certain recruitment scam purportedly carried out by the corporation is being perpetrated on the Internet.

The NNPC in a stern statement said it is dissociating the corporation from the recruitment scam and any exercise currently advertised on social media and blogs.

A statement issued on behalf of the NNPC by Mr. Ndu Ugbamadu, said:

The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) has, for the umpteenth time, reiterated that it has not launched a recruitment campaign of any kind for now.

The latest clarification is coming on the heels of a fresh recruitment advert purportedly from the Corporation being circulated by e-mails and on various social media platforms.

A statement by the Corporation’s spokesman, Mr. Ndu Ughamadu, disclosed that the advert which is on a fake letterhead complete with NNPC logo is purportedly signed by the Group Managing Director, Dr. Maikanti Baru, and the Chief Operating Officer, Refineries, Mr. Anibor Kragha, and directs unsuspecting applicants to send their applications to a fake e-mail address: nnpccareersrecruitment@gmail.com.

Shedding more light on the scam, Mr. Ughamadu said another form of the scam involved text messages, e-mails, and letters inviting gullible job seekers for fake job interviews at the NNPC Towers and other locations across the country with a view to extorting money from them.

He called on members of the public, especially applicants, to discountenance any of such adverts or spurious invitations for job interviews as the Corporation was currently not recruiting, stressing that anyone who entertains such invitations does so at his or her own risk.

Mr. Ughamadu advised that anyone contacted for the purpose of the fake recruitment should not hesitate to report such invitations to relevant law enforcement agencies, adding that the Corporation would continue to engage security agencies on the scam.

He said NNPC Management under the leadership of Dr. Maikanti Baru would sustain the prevailing culture of transparency and accountability which has witnessed the conduct of open public bidding in sourcing for contractors and suppliers of goods and services for its day-to-day operations, including recruitment exercises, stressing that NNPC will advertise all vacant positions in national newspapers whenever it was ready to recruit.

Crime / EFCC Finally Reveals All Diezani Alison-madueke's Cash And Properties by amoss: 4:35pm On Aug 09, 2017
Details of cash and properties so far been traced to a former Minister of Petroleum, Mrs Diezani Alison-Madueke have been revealed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

In an article by two officers of its Public Affairs Directorate – Tony Orilade and Aishah Gambari, the former minister was said to have about NGN47.2 Billion and USD487.5 Million in cash and properties in Lagos and Abuja.

The officials also said gold, silver and diamond jewellery, worth several million pounds sterling were also recovered from one of her residences in Abuja.

Among the properties traced to her are a USD37.5m property on Banana Island, Lagos, two apartments valued at USD350m also on Banana Island, two properties valued at NGN1bn in Yaba, Lagos and a NGN900m property in Port Harcourt – the Rivers State capital.

See the full article below:

N47.2 Billion and $487.5 Million in cash and properties have so far been traced to the former Minister of Petroleum Resources in the Ex-President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration, Mrs. Diezani Alison-Madueke. This followed painstaking investigations by operatives of Nigeria’s Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC.

From time immemorial, precious metals – gold, silver and sparkling stones such as diamonds have delighted women. Relationships have been built and destroyed, wars fought for and reconciliations cemented with gold and precious stones. Not too far back in history, Liberia was the theatre of war over Blood Diamonds.

Unlike Liberia however, the Nigerian nation is not at war. But, it seems Mrs Diezani Alison-Madueke, until recently, Minister of Petroleum Resources, going by the sheer amount of her acquisition of gold and diamonds, may have been fighting a spirited war against millions of compatriots who are heavily and unevenly yoked by crass poverty. To boot, the former minister is accused of having stolen – in broad daylight – the money that funded her acquisitive binge.

A search of one of Diezani Alison-Madueke palatial residences in Abuja, by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, turned up boxes of gold, silver and diamond jewellery, worth several million pounds sterling.

Apart from the jewellery, the EFCC, Nigeria’s foremost anticorruption agency, has traced N47.2 Billion and $487.5 Million in cash and properties to the former Minister of Petroleum Resources in Ex-President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration.

Crime / How 87-year Old American Grandpa Averted Thousands Of Dollar Scam by amoss: 3:19pm On Aug 09, 2017
It is very important to be alert when scammers come calling, this was the story of an American 87-year old man named Lou who helped his family avert a scam of about USD7000.

This scam was announced by the Federal Trade Commission, an American agency responsible for consumer protection. The FTC works to prevent fraudulent, deceptive and unfair business practices in the marketplace.

https://pageone.ng/2017/08/09/87-year-old-grandpa-thousand-scam/

The scammers who had pretended to be a friend of the family in dire need failed in his plot. See story below as shared by a staff of FTC:

One of my favorite parts about working at the Federal Trade Commission is hearing stories of folks avoiding a scam. A recent story involves Lou, who picked up the phone and spotted the scam almost as soon as he heard the young man call him “Grandpa.” The caller said he’d been arrested for drunk driving, needed money for bail, and wanted Lou to call a “lawyer” who would explain everything. (All while not telling “Mom.”)

“I played along with it,” said Lou, 87, who was curious to hear the scammer’s pitch. But Lou also called his daughter, a consumer lawyer. She knew this scam — someone pretends to be a friend or family member in need of money for bail, a medical emergency, or other trouble. His grandson was fine.

The scammers used common tricks.
•They tested Lou to see how much money they could get. They first claimed bail was $7,000, but when Lou said he only had half that amount, the fake lawyer said he could get the bail reduced. Usually, scammers ask you to wire the money or get a prepaid card and give them the numbers on the card. If you do, your money will be gone.
•They tried to keep Lou from talking to anyone. They even told Lou he could be arrested and fined if he told anyone about their conversation. Why? Scammers don’t want you talking to anyone else. They want you to act fast, without thinking too carefully.
•The scammers used information Lou gave them to make their story seem more real. For example, the fake grandson told Lou the accident occurred “in the city.” When Lou named the District of Columbia, the fake grandson said, “Yes. In D.C.” Scammers also get information from social networking sites, or by hacking a loved one’s email account

Business / What You Should Demand Of Your Logistics Provider In Nigeria by amoss: 10:11am On Aug 04, 2017
The job of a logistics company is basically to ensure that your package (item) is delivered to your customer in time and in perfect condition.

It is also quite important that the company is able to provide you with adequate details as per delivery from drop off or pickup point to final status after delivery or failed attempts to reach customers or consignee as the case may be.

Be it an E-commerce or retailer store, it is your desire to keep your customer happy without any loosed ends. Having decided to employ the services of a third party logistics company, it is expected that all ends are tightened to ensure that your customers remain loyal to you thereby returning to re-order.

Here are a few things required of your logistics or fulfilment partner:

Pickup services: It is a world of convenience. It is important that your provider is able to pickup from your agreed location and time whenever you send your request. Although, depending on your availability, you can as well drop off your package(s) for shipment at drop off centers provided by the company.

Provide Pay on delivery service and remittance of cash: Being the most acceptable mode of payment in this clime, you sure want a situation where payment will not be a barrier to your sales. The volume of sale recorded under pay on deliver / cash on delivery cannot be over-emphasized, and sellers do not want to miss out on every opportunity to sell to customers regardless of where they are located within the country. Although Lagos, Abuja and Port-Harcourt records the highest number. Your ability to make this happen through the logistics provider is simply the ultimate. From the point of collecting cash on your behalf, you want your money remitted within the stipulated time frame as agreed in the contract. There are a few logistics providers in Nigeria who are good at remitting as and when due, so also do we have those who hold on to merchants’ payment.

Good customer service: It is often said that customer service is everything. Without mincing words, a logistics provider without quality customer service will surely ruin your business. The logistics provider must ensure that there is no break in communication both with the merchant and customer at any point in time. Sometimes, Bad news is good news. You must try not to spoil the party by hiding the truth as it may end in a mess. For instance, there is a case of broken or damaged item, it is very important to communicate with involved parties, resolve and come to a resolution before things get out of hand.

Real-time tracking / on time delivery: A logistics company with good and well communicated SLA will certainly be of great value, which is often the case for companies with standard. It is very important to always inform your customer prior to shipping when to expect delivery with a stipulated timeline as provided by your logistics coy. Should you at any point in time ‘lie’ to the customer, you have created a wrong impression that will surely boomerang.

Pricing: Well, every business has its unique selling proposition, for some it is pricing. You necessarily do not have to consider using a logistics provider because it is cheap, but it must meet your expectation. Sometime, when it is too cheap, you need to watch it.

After sale service / reverse logistics: At times, there are cases of returns or exchange. This is a situation where the customer is either unsatisfied with the item or product received for some reasons and wants a return. Your logistics provider should be able to help with retrieval of the product. Please note this service may not be for free depending on the terms of agreement.

Business / Nigerian Banks To Stay Put Till 9mobile Gets An Investor(s) by amoss: 11:07pm On Aug 03, 2017
Nigerian banks who are heavily-owed by 9mobile, former Etisalat said they are ready to stay put pending the time when the mobile carrier will investors who will bring in funds.

Adesola Adeduntan, chief executive of FBN Holdings, Nigeria’s largest financial services group said banks involved in the deal are confident in the new management running the mobile carrier.

In an analyst conference call monitored by Thomson Reuters, Adesola Adeduntan said:

“On the part of lenders, we are trying to reposition the company till we find new investors. With the level of cash flow we believe there will be no need for impairment.”

9Mobile’s former company, Etisalat Nigeria was owing USD1.2 billion loan to a consortium of 13 local lenders and international banks who had threatened to take over the company’s affairs after negotiations collapsed. With a new management in place, 9mobile has started hunting for new investors to raise funds in order to defray its debt pile.

According to disclosure by some of the lenders, GTBank with USD138 million and Access Bank with USD31 million are the most exposed to the company’s loan portfolio that has disrupted its ownership structure.

Other lenders who are owned in the debt arrangement are Zenith Bank, First Bank, UBA, Fidelity Bank, Ecobank, FCMB, Stanbic IBTC Bank and Union Bank. There were concerns as to whether affected lenders will make provisions for impairments in their books as a result of the non-performing loan. This was said to be the main reason, the Central Bank of Nigeria got involved in the matter to ensure 9mobile’s default does not end to be a systemic risk to the financial markets.

While 9mobile said it has appointed Citi and Standard Bank to help find new investors, there are speculations that 9mobile already has undisclosed investors who are looking at finalising discussions and perhaps get regulatory requirements to pull through an agreement.

As earlier reported by PageOne.ng, Dangote Industries is said to have acquired 60% stake in Etisalat Nigeria. This is based on unconfirmed but reliable sources in Nigeria’s financial services sector.

Dangote Industries is owned by Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote with investment across various sectors of Nigeria and Africa’s economy.

According to the sources who pleaded not to be named, French and one of the major mobile carriers in Africa, Orange Telecom as well as Vodafone are in high-level discussions to take up the remaining 40% stake in Etisalat Nigeria.

Neither Orange nor Vodafone have commented on the matter. In the latest update, Nigeria’s Central Bank said many investors have shown interest in buying an equity stake in 9mobile, the apex bank has not disclosed the identity of intending investors.

The company has neither commented nor deny the speculation. However, there are signs that a deal will soon be announced given the speed at which the new management was put in place. The company has also, gone ahead to implement its change of brand name across its sales force and service points.

It would be recalled that Etisalat Nigeria entered troubled waters after it was unable to meet up with the repayment of its USD1.2 billion debt it owed a consortium of 13 local banks and other international lenders.
