Business / Five Years After: Jumia, Konga Nigeria’s Ecommerce ‘eagles’ Strive To Break Even by amoss: 11:34am On Jun 24, 2017
Let us rewind back to the year 2010, when there was no Jumia or Konga. The Nigerian eCommerce market was in its most elementary form. There was neither data nor serious pressure from any startup.

But this is 2017, Jumia is now celebrating its 5th year of its anniversary. Coincidentally, Konga, its arch-rival in the market will also be clocking five years in the next two weeks. While these two startups are worth celebrating, there are more stories, intrigues, and pointers that they are far from where they had planned to be.

In the early part of 2011, these two startups were not existing in their present shape or form which brings us to the question: How did we get here?

The misfortune of a tech giant
To put the record straight, the first attempt at floating a well-promoted eCommerce company was made by Naspers, Africa’s largest tech investor and most valuable company. Buoyed by its well-established payTV and enter business, the company mobilized some of its bright minds to Nigeria. Being the same company runing DSTV, Multichoice and Supersport, Naspers imported its eCommerce property to Nigeria starting with Kalahari Nigeria, an eCommerce company. At the same period, Naspers floated Dealfish, a daily deals site to mimic Groupon, which as at that time was the hottest global tech phenomenon threatening the existence of Amazon.

As fate will have it, Both Kalahari and Dealfish could not survive the brutal reality of Nigeria. Naspers shut them down. While not giving up, the company tried the idea of Mocality, a business listing site which was ‘hammered’ towards the tail-end of 2012 before it bites the dust. While it later went ahead to invest in Konga, Naspers held its peace concentrating on its payTV and advertising sales for the platform in Nigeria.

Sports / Is Copa Coca-cola Really Giving More to Nigeria? by amoss: 10:23am On Jun 24, 2017
Year in year out, Coca-Cola affects the lives of many Nigerian children though its grassroots developmental football initiative, Copa Coca-Cola. Call it corporate social responsibility gesture, you would bee absolutely correct.

The idea targeted at teens about the age of 15, has been running for close to a decade touching the ends of the country with meaningful take-away packages for the participating schools.

Without doubts, talents have been discovered, lives have been touched, homes have blessed by such corporate gestures which may not be peculiar to the brand (Coca-Cola) only. We have seen some global brands organize sprint events, Basketball and other games, which is highly commendable, also to mention the media arm (channaels) involved through its football competition tagged ‘Channels kids cup’.

Highly commendable. But we need to see more organizations get involved to save the nation at a time such as this when the national sports festival aimed at discovering talents is not a certainty as confirmed by the Sports ministry owing to “lack of funds.”

Meanwhile, around 5,000 schools participated in this year’s Copa Coca-Cola football competition which saw Progressive Comprehensive Secondary school, Osun emerge winner after beating Owerri City College 1-0 in the final inside Onikan stadium, Lagos. Also, Fosla Academy who were runner up in the last edition lost by a lone goal to Government College Katsina to claim third position.

The theme for this year’s competition, “COPA Coca-Cola Gives You More”, actually captures what the brand has to offer the teens now and in the coming years. Marketing Manager (Colas), Coca-Cola Nigeria, Mr Cletus Onyebuoha in an exclusive interview with PageOne.ng noted that the company was committed to developing the game in the country.

Sports / People Are The Enemies Of Video Assistant Referee by amoss: 11:26am On Jun 19, 2017
In a bid to remove 'clear errors' from the game of football, FIFA introduced the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) which is currently being put to use at the on-going Confederations Cup in Russia, a build-up to the World Cup slated for 2018.

VAR is an association football assistant referee that reviews decisions made by the head referee with the use of video footage and a headset for communication.

The centre referee practically stops the game, communicates with the operators in the replay room who then relays what will be termed as appropriate decision to be taken by the referee in the game situation.

Call it a pause, play and decide system, you will be absolutely correct. Although it is fair enough for the world football governing body to want to end the era of human errors going by what was witnessed in the Confederations Cup matches recently, it could be said that the delays caused by the system may unnecessarily slow the game down.

Business / Interview: How Taxify Wants To Change The Way 18 Million Lagosians Move by amoss: 11:09pm On Jun 18, 2017
Three years ago, Taxify was not known as a ride-hailing company operating in Nigeria. This is 2017, many Nigerians are now getting used to ride-hailing via their mobile apps.

Since then, there has been a renewed competitive fervour in the market. Taxify is the arch-rival to Uber. The company had in less than one year of its operations caused a major upset to gain a sizeable part of the market, particularly in Lagos, Nigeria’s commercial capital where over 70% of economic activities takes place Nigeria

In this exclusive interview with Uchenna Chukwuebuka Okafor, Operations Manager of Taxify Nigeria, he told PageOne.ng how the company plans to maintain its competitive tempo.

What were your key assumptions and data that backed your foray into Nigeria’s ride-hailing business?

We launched in Lagos because of the massive potential the city holds. With an 18 million man population and over a million rides going down every day. We have come to alter the status quo and offer a viable alternative to Lagosians. Ultimately, we aim to change the way people move within the city, create jobs and transform the transportation ecosystem.

How is your strategy different from your core opponent?

Taxify is an e-hailing App that connects riders to great rides, practically moving people safely and in style. We treat driver -partners better so that they can offer high-quality service to customers.

Our commission is 15% (comparing to competitor’s 20-25%), so basically, driver-partners earn significantly more with us than with other competitors.

In terms of CAPEX, can you give us an idea of what you are looking at committing into the market?

The driver-partners commit their vehicles, We offer the platform that connects them to riders. Also at the same engaging many value-added partnerships that would be beneficial to both riders and driver-partners. For instance is the launch of Taxify Cover

Sports / Exclusive Interview: Puma Is No Threat, Owu Sportswear CEO Says by amoss: 10:29am On Jun 14, 2017
Owu Sportswear is one sportswear manufacturing brand that has the Nigerian market covered with its unique vision within 9-years of its existence.

However, with the thoughts of the challenge posed by incoming global brands, such as Puma, one might be tempted to say that the company will be having its toughest moment in business.

In this exclusive interview with Tunji Brown, Chief Executive Officer of Owu Sportswear, he shared the vision and how the company plans to scale further, plus its expansion plans to other markets such as Ghana, Kenya and Zambia.

Owu is one of the leading sportswear brand in Nigeria, how can you describe the journey so far?

I will describe the journey so far as not easy, but glory to God. We are where we are today. The journey 9 years ago; it’s been tough, but presently, I believe we are justified with the number of teams that we kit and our own little contribution. The only contributions we’ve been able to make in Nigerian sports are football, athletics, rugby, basketball, and few others. So I will say we’ve done a good job.

On the teams you kit, how will describe your relationship with Nigeria Professional Football League Clubs in terms of professionalism?

In terms of professionalism, it has been good because we’ve received quite a number of patronage from the Nigeria Professional Football League, that is the League Management Company (LMC). As you might be aware, we kitted the team that went to Spain last year that is, the NPFL All Star Team, we also kitted the under 15 that got to the final of the La Liga Championship in South Africa this year, all courtesy of the LMC. There has been acceptance and we can say that the relationship has been actually good.

Sports / Believing Barcelona’s Comeback Dream Against Juventus by amoss: 12:50pm On Apr 17, 2017
Just like many who believe in the christian faith are looking forward to the second coming of Jesus, so do Barcelona dream of an epic comeback .

The Catalans on Wednesday host Juventus in the champions league quarter final second leg encounter at at Camp Nou, hoping to repeat the famous 4-0 come back they produced against Paris Saint German when it was most difficult.

It is indeed a difficult task many would say, but as they say, impossible is nothing especially in the game of football. Barcelona failed to see the back of the net as they fell 3-0 in Turin last week in what could be described as ‘a Juve day’.

Sports / When Will Nigeria’s Olympic Dream End? by amoss: 11:31pm On Aug 19, 2016
Nigeria is yet to be registered on the Rio 2016 Olympic medals table while countries like the USA take the lead, followed by Great Britain, Germany and Russia in that order.

In fact, the Women’s 4×100 relay team, and the U-23 men’s football team appears to be the only hope of winning a medal as the curtains fall.

It is worthy to note that the total number of medal Nigerian athletes have won in the Olympics in general is 23 most of which were picked from mostly in athletics and boxing. The men’s football team produced the famous gold medal in 1996 when they defeated Brazil. Other medals were from 4 × 400 meters relay team and Taekwondo.

Sports / When Will Ikorodu United Return Home? by amoss: 6:41pm On May 18, 2016
We are approaching mid-season, and teams are beginning to count their fortunes in the 2015/2016 Nigerian Professional League. The League table captured the performance of all the teams involved.

The newly promoted side was handed an opportunity to play inside Agege Stadium against visiting Heartland on their 13th league match which ended 3-1 in their favour. Come to think of it, it was their own choice (club management) to adopt Onikan stadium as home ground upon their arrival in the top division.

As it stands, the club is rooted to the bottom of the log with just 10 points from 17 league games (2 wins, 4 draws and 11 Losses ). If nothing changes in a short while, they may return to the NNL. It is also important to mention that they had an awful outing in the Nigeria National League (NNL) Super Four, although it is sometimes difficult to judge a team based on its performance in pre-season. But could this be the case for this team as their performance sometime is questionable as to whether they had a pre-season as a team?

Sports / La Liga Signs MOU With Nigerian Football League Body So What? by amoss: 4:16pm On Apr 29, 2016
Bravo LMC! The level of development this current league board has brought to Nigerian football is indeed commendable, and cannot be over-emphasized. The Nigerian Professional Football League has not arrived yet but it is definitely on course to announce itself to the entire world. Yes, the League would gain traction.

Frankly speaking, Nigeria will benefit more from this affinity than the Spanish counterparts and part of the promises made to the Nigerian delegation, is that there would be inter-club exchange. How does this work? Does this mean Players or coaches from the Laliga would come to Nigeria and vice versa? Will Laliga compel Barcelona to send their players down to Nigeria?

Marketing was discussed, does it mean the Laliga will promote Nigerian league? Get the full gist and understand in clear terms https://pageone.ng/2016/04/29/laliga-signs-mou-nigeria-league-body/

Keshi showed up but the captain failed to turn up based on claims that he never received any invitation in that regard.

Sports / Tributes Pour In For Nigerian Footballer Who Collapsed And Died In Malaysia by amoss: 11:47am On Jun 15, 2015
This is sad! I understand the fact that David Faramola Oniya is not the first player to have
collapsed while playing (hunting for his daily bread) and eventually pass on. To mention a
few similar incidence, Marc-Vivien Foe of Cameroun during a Confederations Cup game in 2003,
and recently Belgium lost two players in similar fashion this year.

The death of this Nigerian footballer who plies his trade for T-Team, a club in Malaysia during a friendly game
against Kelantan on Saturday 13th June 2015 came as a rude shock to many including his friends and Nigerians
at large especially those who understand the ''hustle'' and the search for greener pasture.

I visited his Facebook page and realized that many who were sending in their condolences
do not know David from Adam. Nigerians, colleagues and many others he had had contact
with during his days on earth could not hold back but drop a line.

According to reports, he had barely had contact with the ball, in fact he had not played five minutes
before he slumped and was rushed to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The essence of this write-up is not to join in the blame game, however, we won't delve into the
blame game by his club Chief Executive CEO Syahrizan Mohd Zain who felt the player would have
survived if only he had received adequate and prompt attention.

All that would not wake the dead! We can only send our prayers and that is what many of David's ''friends'' at large are doing now.
