allycat: If you say you are a primary health care worker or professional, then you should have nothing against working in the primary health care setting. It is because there is no manpower at that level that all the patients keep going to the secondary and tertiary health centres and hospitals ie general hospital, specialist hospitals and teaching hospitals.
Doctors of Optometry also work in primary health centers like any other Doctor

Primary means first point of call in case of any ocular /eye problem. The Optometrist is suppose to see the patient first in any health facility before referral but in most health facilities the reverse is the case. The Optometrist can also refer patients to a consultant in any field of Optometry. Take note

What is a Doctor of Optometry?

Doctor of Optometry Professional Programs

Optometry Schools and Colleges

Doctors of Optometry (O.D.s/optometrists) are the independent primary health care professionals for the eye.  Optometrists examine, diagnose, treat, and manage diseases, injuries, and disorders of the visual system, the eye, and associated structures as well as identify related systemic conditions affecting the eye.

Doctors of Optometry prescribe medications, low vision rehabilitation, vision therapy, spectacle lenses, contact lenses, and perform certain surgical procedures.

Optometrists counsel their patients regarding surgical and non-surgical options that meet their visual needs related to their occupations, avocations, and lifestyle.

An optometrist has completed pre-professional undergraduate education in a college or university and four years of professional education at a college of optometry, leading to the doctor of optometry (O.D.) degree. Some optometrists complete an optional residency in a specific area of practice.

Optometrists are eye health care professionals state-licensed to diagnose and treat diseases and disorders of the eye and visual system.

heykims: Lemme begin wt a question dt usually amazes me?
Why on earth will ALL health workers including even cleaners, messangers, record officers etc excluding only d medical dcotors come together to form a union, JOHESU?
What are d aims nd objectives of d union?
Saying d lab scientists nd radiographers carry out d investigations is not wholly true for there re medical doctors in all aspects of medicine be it d lab, radiology etc even pharmacology dt re specializing there, even the HODs of these lab departments viz chemical pathology, hematology, microbiology, radiology re usually consultant doctors ie experts in these fields.
.

They feel that they are stagnated at a point in their work by the medical doctors and wish to have a common front to overcome that. Other health workers are not clamouring to be called doctors neither do they want to do the work of the doctors but wish to study more to become consultants in their fields and also grow to become directors. So what is wrong with that? The medical doctors are just become selfish by insisting that they will be the only ones to become consultans and directors.what a pity

hopsydboi: from real sense, what are we talking about? If I may ask. U̶̲̥̅̊ talking about equating a surgeon to a lab scientist? U̅ r a joker. Damm unity
It does not mean that a lab scientist will become a surgeon but that a lab scientist becomes more effective having studied more to become a consultant lab scientist, like the surgeon studied more to become one
HealthRe: Court Stops Implementation of FG/JOHESU Agreement by Amucha: 9:28am On Jun 30, 2014
That you are a consultant does not mean that a Dr will be added to your name. I think that other health workers will become consultants by furthering and getting more knowledge. Saying that other health workers should not become consultants is limiting knowledge and rendering them stagnant. People should explore knowledge and proper remuneration given to the exploration irrespective of discipline.
