JOB OBJECTIVE: To ensure IE operations comply with relevant Nigerian legislation and statutory requirements
• To ensure compliance with regulatory stipulations / industry legislations and provide advice and opinions on regulatory requirements
• To provide legal support to CEO/MD

ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Leadership Role
• Responsible for the oversight of the all the legal and regulatory activities of Ikeja Electric
• Provide leadership and ensure efficient and effective management of staff and resources in the Legal department.

Regulatory Compliance
• Ensure compliance with the statutory requirements set down by the regulators
• Continuously monitor compliance with statutory obligations and advise management accordingly.
• Prepare monthly and quarterly reports for the department for executive management/ board meetings.

Policy Development
• Review all procedural guidelines, policies, etc. and ascertaining consistency with the law
• Formulate important policies pertaining to various legal issues in consultation with leadership team.

Litigation Management
• Review and determine cases for litigation - attend to and defend in court where necessary
• Review progress of outstanding litigation and liaise with and manage external lawyers.
• Represent I.E in legal matters before concerned authorities

Legal Risk/ Advisory
• Provide legal protection and risk management advice to management especially on contract management.
• Investigate matters, conduct site visit if required, schedules meetings with aggrieved party and attempts to ensure an out of court settlement
• Establish and ensure an effective dispute resolution mechanism to guarantee protection for all stakeholders
• Ensure proper communication between other departments and legal cell in order to seek clarifications pertaining to cases coming up for hearing, providing legal opinions and also updating the departments on the status of the cases .
• Provide legal opinions and advise on matters relating to I.E’s business activities / operations
• Develop & implement compliance culture sufficient to meet the law, & corporate culture.
• Contribute to meeting discussions, as and when required, and advising members on the legal, governance, accounting and tax implications of proposed policies.

Contract Negotiation
• Draft, review and endorse contractual agreements and maintain a Contracts Register (support other departments during drafting of tender and contract documents)
• Review all contracts or any other documentation where the Company has committed itself and assess legal implications that need to be brought to the executive management’s attention.
• Negotiate, review and draft documentation for business transactions and prepare and advise on the necessary checklist to be adopted to ensure information is submitted on time.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
• Bachelor’s degree in Law and has represented corporate bodies in civil and legal matters
• A master’s degree will be an added advantage
• 15 – 18 years of experience legal experience in a leading organisation with a proven track record of providing accurate and effective legal counsel, contract negotiation and drafting and litigation.
