The Nigerian Navy on Friday arrested nine suspected illegal petroleum dealers during their operation on the Igbokoda coastal-line in the Ilaje Local Government Area of Ondo state.

The suspects were: Marvelous Kalejaiye, Chuckwuma Oyeyemi, Olajide Omoseni, Ogunfeyinmi Oriade, Omotua Uyimigar. Kola Ogungbare, Wale Ogunfeyinmi, Ario Sama and Dayo Ojomo.

Navy Capt. Danjuma Ndanusa, the Commanding Officer, Nigerian Navy Forward Operation Base (FOB), Igbokoda, who paraded the suspects, reiterated the Navy’s commitment to stem illegal business transactions on waterways across the country.

He said that criminal activities on waterways in the country, particularly in Ondo state, would no longer succeed as his men were battle-ready and had taken up the fight against such criminality with utmost priority.

According to him, the mandate of the Nigeria Navy, as enshrined in the law, is to make sure that the nation’s maritime domain is free of illegalities such as illegal oil bunkering, piracy and sea robbery.

“Illegal bunkering, as you are aware, is not just inimical to the economy of the nation, but equally highly inimical to the well-being of our environment.

“I warn criminal elements to stay clear of the coastal area and at the same time, law abiding citizens of the area should join hands in riddling it of acts of criminality,” he said.

While handing over the suspects to the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) for onward prosecution, he urged governments at all levels to provide jobs for the youth to stem criminal activities.

In his response, Asst. Commander, Diko Ibrahim, the Area Commander, NSCDC, Okitipupa Command, commended the Navy for its unwavering efforts at ensuring that criminal activities were reduced.

He affirmed that the synergy between the two security agencies in curbing criminality on the waterways would yield more fruits in no distance time.

He also assured the Nigeria Navy that the suspects would be prosecuted, in accordance with the law.

Meanwhile, some of the suspects, who confessed to the crime, disclosed that it was their first involvement in the illegal business but it was as a result of the high rate of unemployment in the country.

Crime / Unemployed Man Defiles Neighbour’s Nine-year-old Daughter by andrewboyz9: 5:00pm On Jul 18, 2019
An Igbosere Magistrates’ Court in Lagos Thursday remanded an unemployed man, John Edet, who allegedly defiled his neighbour’s nine-year-old daughter.

Mrs K. O. Doja-Ojo made the order following an application by the police.

She ordered that the case file be duplicated and sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for legal advice.

Edet was arraigned on a temporary one-count charge of defilement.

His plea was not taken.

Prosecuting Inspector Peace Chukwudi alleged that Edet committed the offence at about 4pm on July 9, at Ilasan in Eti-Osa Local Government Area (LGA) of Lagos.

Chukwudi said that the defendant had unlawful sexual intercourse with the child.

According to her, Edet and the girl’s parents were from the same town.

“The girl complained of pains in her vagina and told her parents that their townsman had been having carnal knowledge of her whenever they were not around,” she said.

The offence, the prosecutor added, contravened Section 137 of the Criminal Law of Lagos, 2015.

The case continues on August 14.

Crime / Criminals Cloning Govt Websites, DSS Warns by andrewboyz9: 4:27pm On Jul 18, 2019
Increasingly audacious criminal elements are cloning websites of Federal Government agencies and using them to defraud innocent citizens, the Department of State Services (DSS) has declared.

In a statement in Abuja on Thursday, DSS spokesman, Mr. Peter Afunanya, said that intense investigation is going on towards unmasking the criminals.

According to him: “The attention of the Department of State Services (DSS) has been drawn to activities of some unscrupulous elements that clone official websites of some government agencies and use same to defraud unsuspecting members of the public.

“Instances abound where the official identities/paraphernalia of certain Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) have been deceptively deployed by these criminals to short change vulnerable persons.

“Notably, the Nigeria Social Investment Trust Fund (NSITF) and the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) have so far suffered the tricks of these fraudsters who use decoys to manipulate their victims.

“This, in the case of NSITF, has resulted in loss of varying sums of money by those promised huge returns on Federal Government’s investments and other poverty alleviation initiatives which ended up as fraudulent Ponzi schemes or money doubling ventures.”

Urging members of the public to report any such case and exercise restraint in dealing with unknown or unconfirmed persons and groups, Afunanya stated that illegal sale of NYSC kits, promises of youth corpers’ redeployment and other illegalities are being perpetrated by the criminals.

“On the other hand, some persons have also engaged in the illegal sale of NYSC kits and accoutrements to prospective Corps members.

“They also advertise the issuance of medical clearance certificates as well as redeployment of corps members to preferred States for primary assignment on medical, security, marital grounds or other reasons.

“While the DSS is already working with these agencies to identify and apprehend the suspects, the Service enjoins the public and prospective corps members, to be wary and note these fraudulent developments,” he stated, adding the DSS is determined to ensure that those behind such illegalities face the full consequences of their actions.

Politics / Army Colonel, 5 Other Soldiers Killed In Boko Haram Battle - Premium Times by andrewboyz9: 4:04pm On Jul 18, 2019
Six soldiers, including two officers, who fought to repel a Boko Haram attack on Wednesday were killed by the insurgents.

One of the victims was a colonel and another a captain.

Several Boko Haram fighters were also killed by the Nigerian soldiers.

The attack occurred at about 6:00 p.m. along Maiduguri-Damaturu Highway during a patrol by the colonel and other soldiers of the 29 Task Force Brigade.

The Nigerian Army has not announced the development. Its spokesperson, Sagir Musa, did not immediately return calls seeking comments from PREMIUM TIMES.

PREMIUM TIMES is withholding the identity of the slain officers as we are not sure their families have been briefed by the army.
The military has avoided announcing own casualties in recent months, including the two lieutenant colonels who were killed within the past two months.

A military source told PREMIUM TIMES the six soldiers were killed near their base in Jakana.

A soldier who went missing has since returned to base, sources said. A reinforcement was sent from the 29 Task Force Brigade Headquarters in Benisheik to the outpost in Jakana.

The remains of the colonel and five others have been sent to the Nigerian Army medical facility in Maiduguri.

The Boko Haram continues its deadly campaign despite the Nigerian government’s efforts and claims that the war was nearing its last days.

Hundreds of soldiers have been killed since Boko Haram began focusing on military bases in July 2018, casualties that included at least six senior officers and commanders.

The military has succeeded in limiting the insurgents to three states of Adamawa, Borno and Yobe. They hitherto operated across Northern Nigeria including in the Nigerian capital, Abuja. However, the Boko Haram group is still able to attack military and civilians in the three states where it currently operates.

The Boko Haram insurgency has claimed tens of thousands of lives since 2009.
