The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has declared the All Progressives Congress, APC, candidate, Gboyega Oyetola winner of the Osun State governorship election. The election held on Saturday was declared inconclusive by INEC, which necessitated a rerun on Thursday. In the rerun election, the APC polled 1,160 votes won massively in all contested wards and polling units despite outcry of alleged rigging and intimidation of the opposition party, while PDP got a paltry 325 votes. President Emmerson Mnangagwa says he won’t emulate his predecessor Robert Mugabe by clinging to power, and may even give opposition leader Nelson Chamisa an official role, a newspaper reported. Quoting recent comments by Mnangagwa to US media on his trip to New York to attend the UN General Assembly, the Daily News said the 76-year-old had no qualms about stepping down. “We have now limited the terms of the president just to two terms… I will abide by that without any iota of resistance at all,” Mnangagwa said. Oil majors Shell and Eni will be carefully monitoring a first ruling this week by a Milan judge in one of the energy industry’s biggest corruption scandals for clues to what might be round the corner for them. The two companies are embroiled in a long-running graft case revolving around the purchase in 2011 of one of Africa’s biggest oilfields – Nigeria’s OPL 245 – for about $1.3 billion. The Director-General of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Mustapha Maihaja, has declared flooding a national disaster in four states including Kogi, Niger, Delta and Anambra, placing eight others on the watch list. The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) yesterday dared the Federal Government to produce facts proving its appointments are not lopsided. “We are disappointed and shocked that despite appeals to the president to break the domination of the security apparatus by people of the same religion and language in a multi-religious and multi-ethnic nation, Buhari has turned a deaf ear,” CAN said, regretting that his recent appointments neither featured a Christian nor a southerner. Ethiopia’s Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and Eritrean President Isaias Afwerki signed a peace agreement in Saudi Arabia on Sunday, the second peace deal reached since July between the once warring African countries. The Ethiopian and Eritrean leaders signed a “joint declaration of peace and friendship” on July 9, normalizing ties between the longtime foes who waged war against each other between 1998 and 2000. Some 8,000 people were driven from their homes in the Boston suburbs by a series of gas explosions, and it was unclear on Friday when they could go back. The blasts killed at least one person, injured 12 more and destroyed dozens of homes and other buildings in Andover, North Andover and Lawrence on Thursday. President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the appointment of Yusuf Magaji Bichi as the new Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS). The appointment takes effect from Friday, September 14, 2018. Mr Bichi will replace Mr Matthew Seiyeifa who has been in the acting capacity after the dismissal of Lawal Daura. Former United Nations secretary general Kofi Annan will be buried Thursday after a three-day funeral and ceremony. Mourners have thronged to the conference centre in Accra, where his coffin has been since Monday. Many attending described him as a peaceful man who dedicated himself to global security. At least 20 people were killed in central Mali when a truck fell into a river after a suspected brake failure, the Malian government said on Wednesday. The incident in the West African country’s Mopti region happened late on Monday night. “The first report puts the toll at 20 killed and 63 rescued by emergency services,” the government said in a statement. “According to the initial stages of the investigation, a technical failure relating to the brake system could be the origin of this dramatic accident,” it said. |
A small stone flake marked with intersecting lines of red ochre pigment some 73,000 years ago that was found in a cave on South Africa’s southern coast represents what archaeologists on Wednesday called the oldest-known example of human drawing. A landslide triggered by heavy rains in Ethiopia’s rural southwest on Tuesday killed at least 12 people, state media reported. Four people were injured in the disaster which occurred in the Isara district of the Southern Nations, Nationalities, and Peoples’ Region. Denmark’s Ambassador to Nigeria Torben Gettermann says Nigeria’s exports to his country have risen by more than 100% within the first three months of this year. He said with concern that, before now, the trade volume had been too small. Denmark has imported so much from Nigeria than it exported. Former United Nations secretary general Kofi Annan will receive a state funeral and burial in Ghana on September 13, the Ghanaian president said on Friday, calling it “a major event for our country”. The announcement was made by President Nana Akufo-Addo following a meeting with Annan’s family in Accra. Annan, a Ghanaian national and Nobel peace laureate, died on Saturday at the age of 80 after a short illness.
