Sirleo05: Nigeria is a fuel economy, that's, it largely depends on fuel, diesel for her daily survival, and any increase will mean doom for the people and business at large. so, there's need for government to reduce price which in turn will reduce pressure on the people and business.
The big question we are not asking enough, is why Tinubu failed to crash the price of petrol as he promised before he was allowed to grab power from Buhari after fighting for it? Why did he run with the grabbed power cluelessly like a headless pig to make everything worse than even clueless Buhari did?
Deltafirstson: Although the pump price of fuel was N197 when President Bola Tinubu took over on May 29, 2023, the product now sells for N617 per litre – less than two months after.
In his inaugural address, Tinubu announced that subsidy was gone, fulfilling a promise that all leading presidential candidates made during the campaign.
Nigerians have been lamenting the hardship occasioned by fuel price hike. Amid the lamentation, a video where Tinubu campaigned to slash the price of fuel went into circulation.
Checks by Daily Trust affirmed the authenticity of the video uploaded on the YouTube page of Channels Television.
At his campaign rally in Abeokuta, Ogun State capital, on January 25, 2023, Tinubu spoke on a number of issues, but those of fuel scarcity and naira redesign made the headlines.
However, Tinubu who spoke in Yoruba language, also assured the crowd that though people were saying petrol price would hit N200, it would be reviewed downward under him.
“The great Nigerian youths, the great Nigerian students, the confident Nigerian youths. This is a revolution. This election is a revolution. They are plotting, but they will fail. They said fuel price will increase and reach N200 per litre. Go and relax, we will bring it down,” he had said in the 7th minute of the video.
erad: Atiku is now sounding very foolish and annoying. Every sane Nigerian knows IPMAN's appeal is not for the sake of Nigerians, it's to protect their own profit margin.
Do you also know that Tinubu has been paying subsidy illegally under a different name
Any idea why he is selling petrol so expensive despite paying subsidy more than previous presidents?
anonimi: NNPCL’s subsidy payment jump by 47.9% to N7.1trn in 2024
November 26, 2025
The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) paid a total of N7.1 trillion as subsidy for premium motor spirit (PMS) in 2024, this sum represents a 47.9 percent increase from N4.8 trillion recorded in 2023.
This is despite the government’s announcement of subsidy removal in 2023.
The company explained that the amount, which it termed ‘energy security expense’ arises when there is differential between the exchange rate used to freeze the premium motor spirit ex-coastal price and the prevailing rate at the point of import settlement.
According to the report, government had instructed that NNPC Limited cannot sell its PMS above a certain regulated price. It added that the cost of petrol import is usually much higher that the regulated price.
saintopus: Of a truth, we're are not supposed to buy fuel at the present price. Nearly all the oil producing countries, Nigeria’s petrol is the most expensive.
Of a truth, All Promises Cancelled, APC is filled with scammers and 419ers.
How much do you think they have FORCED us to pay as subsidy to them for the past 11 years, due to the massive corruption in their oil sector
anonimi: Petrol should never cost more than N70 per litre, says APC
January 19, 2015
The All Progressives Congress (APC) has described as mere tokenism the reduction of petrol price from N97 to N87 per litre, saying the petroleum product ordinarily should sell for N70.
On Sunday, the federal government announced the reduction of petrol price, citing the fall of global crude oil price.
But the APC through Lai Mohammed, its spokesman, on Monday accused the government of making a show out of deceit, saying “a 10.3 per cent slash in the price of petrol was a mere tokenism at a time the price of crude oil has crashed by about 60 per cent”.
It argued that the pump price of a litre of petrol should not be more than 70 Naira, alleging that at N87 per litre, the government was forcing Nigerians to subsidise the massive corruption in the oil sector by N17 for every litre of fuel.
gr8ofnnetwork: Dey play. Let ElRufai become president, he will do NOTHING. You think Nigeria Former President is a joke to you. Where were you when Tinubu was mock during OBJ/Jonathan regime, did the man die? Even Buhari did not spare him. You guys are too emotional on Nigeria matter.
You don't care the dangerous game he played by leaking NSA security information despite seeing how Nigeria is hemorrhaging in the hands of insecurity instigators, but you think ElRufai is an hero. He is fortunate to be around till date. Of he had done this in other climes, by now his family will be planning one year memorials
What NSA security information did he leak?
In what other climes are you referring? Is it America, where Chicago is? Or in France, where Paris is? Or in China where they execute drug dealers instead of letting them off the hook after paying $460,000? What other clime are you talking about here
Fishermen: El rufai must pay for all the atrocities he committed against Christians and southern Kaduna
When are you going to make Tinubu pay for all the atrocities he committed against Christians with his Muslim-Muslim ticket as well as to Yorubas and Igbos?
anonimi: How we foiled Jonathan’s effort to make Mulika Adeola Speaker, Akande reveals
AS president in 2011, Goodluck Jonathan did all he could to ensure South West grabbed the country’s number four seat, including lobbying then opposition leaders from the zone, to no avail. The North West eventually grabbed the seat, supported by South West leaders in opposition to then ruling party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Former Governor of Osun State and now statesman, Chief Bisi Akande, made this revelation in his autobiography, “My Participations” which is currently dominating political and national dis- course.
Aminu Tambuwal, now Sokoto State governor, won the seat, against the preferred pick of his party, Mrs Mulikat Adeola Akande, from the South-West. Defunct Action Congress of Nigeria, then a fledging opposition, which had Akande and his soulmate, former Lagos State governor, Senator Bola Tinubu, as front- line leaders, openly asked its elected members of the House of Representatives, mostly from the South-West, to work against their region and back Tambuwal from North-West.
The opposition party’s support carried Tambuwal through the contest against Akande, then ruling party’s favourite for the speakership seat.
In his book, Chief Akande revealed that former president then as incumbent, personally reached out to Tinubu, who is now believed to be nursing presidential aspiration in 2023 and himself, but couldn’t convince them.
He wrote, “President Jonathan, immediately after the meeting (with political parties), called Bola Tinubu aside into a lobby to broach the matter of ACN support for a choice of who would become the Speaker of the House of Representatives.
“That same day, President Jonathan talked to me on phone about the same matter. He disclosed that PDP had zoned the position to the South-West but that only one Muraina and another Mulika won elections on PDP ticket from the zone into the House of Representatives.
Atiku is way better than the master strategist of balablu bulaba propaganda lies in Aso Rock, who has destroyed the prosperity, peace and security with cheap petrol and less debt burden we enjoyed under PDP for 16 years.

anonimi: May Day: Hunger, unemployment, insecurity real— Tinubu
According to him: “The theme demands our collective attention and serves as a stark reminder of the need to create an environment where every worker feels safe, valued, and empowered to contribute to the growth and prosperity of our nation. As your President, I assure you that this administration is committed to creating such an environment for the common good.”
On the economic hardship, he noted that while it is a global phenomenon, its effects on Nigerians are particularly severe.
Tinubu said: “I am aware of the peculiarities of the economic hardship Nigerians face—rising living costs, hunger, insecurity, unemployment, and the loss of livelihoods. These challenges are real and demand definitive solutions, which I am poised to address as your President.

Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister for the Economy, Mr. Wale Edun made this known at the end of the inaugural Federal Executive Council meeting in Abuja. Mr. Edun said that the benefit of the subsidy removal will be plough back into various sectors to improve business environment for local and foreign investment. He added that with the increased revenue from subsidy removal, various palliatives have been made available to cushion its effect on a short, medium and long-term basis.
Ofunaofu: Report: Current Govt Added More Debt in Two Years Than Nigeria Accumulated in 55 Years
• Decries Nigeria’s debt service-to-revenue ratio
•Urges FG to declare fiscal emergency
A new policy brief has warned that Nigeria’s worsening debt profile and weak revenue generation have pushed the country into a dangerous fiscal position, with the current administration accumulating more debt in two years than Nigeria recorded during its first 55 years after independence.
The report, released by the Alliance for Economic Research and Ethics LTD/GTE, a Nigerian policy think tank, argued that the country’s debt crisis has evolved into a governance and revenue emergency, as debt servicing obligations now exceed the federal government’s retained earnings. > > According to the think tank, Nigeria’s public debt rose sharply from N87.38 trillion in June 2023 to N159.28 trillion by the end of 2025, with President Bola Tinubu’s administration accounting for about N65.9 trillion of the increase within its first two years in office.
The organisation in the brief titled: “Nigeria Is Borrowing to Breathe—and the Clock Is Ticking”, noted that Nigeria accumulated only about N12.06 trillion in debt from independence in 1960 up to 2015, meaning the current administration added more than five times that amount in just 24 months.
The report stated that while previous governments also contributed significantly to the country’s rising debt burden, the speed of accumulation under the current administration had intensified concerns over fiscal sustainability.
“President Bola Tinubu’s administration has added a further N65.9 trillion in just two years. To put that in perspective: it took Nigeria’s first 55 years of independence to accumulate N12 trillion in debt. The current administration has added more than five times that amount in 24 months,” it argued.
It recalled that Nigeria briefly became almost debt-free externally after the administration of former President Olusegun Obasanjo secured an $18 billion Paris Club debt relief package in 2005 and paid $12 billion to extinguish about $30 billion in external obligations.
Magabush1: Is Niger delta university a federal university or state university. Most of comment out of hate rather than knowledge. Is federal government the one that increase the school fees of a state university
Tinubu hiked petrol price instead of crashing it as promised. Tinubu failed to achieve N300/$1 in the short run as promised before he hit the ground running despite his $3.3 billion SPV loan to defend the Naira.
These two clueless reforms have created hyperinflation, which is complicated by Tinubu's failure to create 50 million jobs.
Is there any part of the above that you do not understand

glimpse: You get it. No better way to put it. Very soon some people will not be able to send their children to higher institution in Nigeria. Pressure ti poju nau.

anonimi: Nigeria: Tinubu imposed Fees on LASU - another major attack on Education
06 June 2006
Back in February two Lagos students were killed by police as they protested against the recent hike in school fees. In some cases fees have been increased a hundred times over. This is making it practically impossible for poor and working class Nigerian children to get an education.
"The Lagos State university students' union in conjunction with the NANS zone D and NANS JCC Lagos Axis berate the satanic increment in LASU school fees and the killing of some students of LASU during the peaceful protest against the increment in school fees. And call for the immediate reversal of these exploitative fees as a prerequisite to let the less privilege have access to Education".
These was the first paragraph in the leaflet issued by the students' union alongside with NANS zone D and JCC Lagos in February after the students' protest against the fees, which led to the killing of two students by the police on the command of the Lagos State Government.
It will be recalled that immediately after the appointment of a new vice chancellor last year, December 2005, the Tinubu regime of Lagos State announced to Lagos residents that the government could not afford to subsidize education and that in line with the ‘reforms' in the education sector, there cannot be any free education. The university authorities were directed to increase the fees from 250 Naira for old students to 25,000 Naira, while the freshmen's old fee of 1, 000 Naira was increased to N35, 000. This increment exclude the acceptance fees N10,000 introduced earlier to the fresh students two years ago.
It is very important to note that even while the official school fees were placed at N250 earlier, an average student still pays as much as N25,000 to the university or its agents. This takes the form of handouts, registration fees, etc.
Not excluding the current attempt to deny the children of the working class education by the newly imposed post-JAMB test, according to ruling elites, it is to checkmate examination malpractice experienced during jamb exams but from reality, it has been confirmed as another conduit pipe through which money is generated and siphoned without question. This post jamb fee in LASU is N2,000. All these fees stated above do not include various expenses to be incurred while going through the registration processes.
The Tinubu administration carrying out these attacks on students is a master of deception. Towards the end of his first four years, he became one of the most hated governors in Nigeria as he committed enormous atrocities against workers, students and rendered many people homeless. The sacking of over 10,000 workers in 2001/2002 over the N7,500 minimum wage protests is still fresh in the memory of the working class despite the treachery of the labour leadership.
Okay. Not exactly what he said. But that is exactly what he implied. How much is the minimum wage of Lagos state civil servants? He seems to be out of touch and his statements are highly irresponsible!
Governor Babatunde Fashola battled hard weekend, to justify the astronomical hike in tuition fees recently introduced in Lagos State University, LASU, by the state government. Recall that the state government had increased tuition fees paid in the university from N25,000 to N250,000 per session.
Fashola, who spoke at Government College, Ughelli’s, annual luncheon party in Lagos, said Nigerians were unconsciously making the country one where there would be separate schools for the rich and poor.
According to him, critics of the increment are indirectly calling for a Nigerian society which will be divided into poor university for the poor and rich university for rich people.
He said: “Countries that do not prioritise education are always at the mercy of those who place a high premium on education.
“Where in the world have we seen tuition fee of university of N25,000? You cannot find this anywhere. Even the nations that are developed and wealthy do not give education for N25,000.
“LASU started very well and over the years, the population grew and beyond the available facilities and the school began to deteriorate. We are determined to rescue LASU and we will not make it a school for the poor.
“We are unconsciously making Nigeria a society where there will be a school for the rich and one for the poor. “Several people in this country pay so much for education abroad while the schools here continue to deteriorate. It is only in the university that the children of the rich and children of the poor can sit in the same classroom.”

PrettyCrystal: Former Nigerian President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, has caused a stir online with his young looks after rocking this Made In Aba attire.. The 80-year-old politician has always encouraged the purchase of indigenous products after taking delivery of Made-In-Aba shoes from governor Okezie Ikpeazu of Abia state some months ago.
Did Ikpeazu also give him some kerosene to fry akara empowered by Remi Tinubu for those made jobless, extreme poverty paupers by APC's clueless palliative agenda instead of creating jobs, like the 50 million promised by her husband?
Igboblog: 2019 : I Weep For Abians By Wisdom Nwedene (Must Read)
Written by Wisdom Nwedene
Yesterday, pictures of Governor Okezie Ikpeazu branded Tanker distributing free kerosene to people at Umunkpeyi and other locations circulated the social media space.
Many people were seen struggling to get the free kerosene from the tanker.
I was shocked and wept bitterly when I saw the pictures because this is no longer the Abia State I know before.
From Ikpeazu's moves by sharing free kerosene and money to Abians few days to Governorship election, it is crystal clear that he is aware that he has failed the people who entrusted him with power.
I also heard that Ikpeazu said that the dark days are over for the civil servants in Abia State and donated 10 million naira to them.
My question to the civil servants is, will Ikpeazu 10 million naira solve the pains and problems you have been through in the last three and half years?
Let me quickly recall that in the last three and half years, almost all the civil servants in every sector protested over non payments of their salaries.
Let me do flashback, in 2018, the staff of Abia State owned University teaching hospital, Aba protested and cursed Ikpeazu over non-payment of their 9months salary.
The demonstration was staged Inside the premises of the hospital.
Also, in terms of infrastructure, Ikpeazu has not done well.
Let me also draw your mind to the Osisoma Flyover being constructed by Ikpeazu for over three years now.
Despite his promise that the flyover will be completed in January 2019, the truth is that the project has been abandoned.
When it comes to good road, hospital, empowering the farmers, Ikpeazu has not delivered also.
I don't know any reason a true Abia State born should want Ikpeazu to return to the Government House when he has failed to deliver half of the promises he made in 2015.
If you come to Ebonyi State, you will see what Umahi did in terms of infrastructure . He built many flyovers, good roads and empowered farmers. That's what I expected Ikpeazu to do.
Let me make it clear that I'm not from Abia State and didn't receive a dime to pen down this article but as a journalist, I know it is imperative to speak against evils, injustice, hunger, etc when I see them.

Omoawoke: I’m not saying who’s done the lesser evil.. I’m saying he’s ready to drag down this country to the mud… First, the Christian genocide Una go report to Trump, what has been done better? It’s almost one year now , what has gotten better other than VISA ban on Nigerians except for diplomats 😂 Imagine Nigerians are crying that dem dey kpai them, he come ban the victims and still allowing the politicians and their kids to be entering USA… they even stated that they only process visas for diplomats Go to Nigeria USA student visa thread here on Nairaland and see them crying everyday… Some people get fully funded scholarships with stipends but there dreams have been cut short… they remain in the country collecting wotowoto My point is crying to Trump and his current administration will only worsen it for innocent citizens, it won’t make anything better.. If you don’t want Tinubu, go and vote him out and stop celebrating Atiku adding salt to our injury
Tinubu is worse and Atiku should do everything to get him out of office to limit his destructive and devilish agenda.
Those who do not want our country to get worse, should work hard to remove the bigger evil.
Omoawoke: You have a point… The leaders have destroyed this country, and they are not done yet But Atiku is not innocent in anyway, and he’s ready to bring down every last thing in this country in desperation… when would this end? Because the people who have always been the biggest casualties are the innocent citizens…
How has Atiku done worse to destroy Nigeria than Tinubu has done
Ezeama400: Based on my observations, most Northerners vote one of theirs, not even this political party of a thing.. Check the results of 2023 election and see how they voted Atiku despite the fact that a northerner just left the office.. Now Elrufai and Buhari that supported Tinubu are no where to be found, let’s see how it goes..
How come Tinubu got so many votes in the north last election? Who made that happen?
Maxymilliano: The presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu has explained why he delegated some members of the party to respond to questions posed to him. According to the former Lagos Governor, he adopted the delegation method “to show team-ship”.
Tinubu spoke at the Chatham House lecture titled: ‘Nigeria’s 2023 elections: In conversation with Bola Ahmed Tinubu’, monitored by The Nation.
At the lecture, Tinubu after his opening remarks, assigned Kaduna Governor Nasir El-Rufai to speak on how his (Tinubu-led) government would address insecurity and asked the Director of Strategic Communication of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential Campaign Council, Dele Aleke, to respond to the question on oil theft.
Racoon: Festus Keyamo Defends Tinubu From Drug Trafficking, Says Tinubu Mistakenly Shared Flats With Drug Lords
The Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Mr Festus Keyamo, has distanced the All Progressive Congress presidential candidata, Bola Tinubu, from being a drug baron who was involved in the traffic of narcotics in the United States.
Keyamo, who also doubles as APC Presidential Campaign spokesperson, noted that the former governor of Lagos State only shared a block of flat with drug barons about 30 years ago in the US.
His reaction is coming following documents of a Chicago District Court indicting and convicting Tinubu of drug dealings and money laundering in 1993.
The document which emerged online two days ago, described APC standard-bearer as a drug baron, adding that Tinubu entered a plea bargain, leading to the forfeiture of his assets to US authorities in 1993
It was also pointed out that Tinubu forfeited the sum of $460, 000 dollars in his bank account at First Heritage Bank to the US government.
Speaking on Wednesday on Channels TV, Mr Keyamo dismissed such claims, insisting that Tinubu was linked to drug peddlers who were his neighbours.
He said: “What happened was that Tinubu went to open an account. The address which he used in opening the account was the address used by these people. I think some blocks of flats. Maybe, he was happy to be in that block of flats too.
“So, they now link it that the other people they were investigating for narcotics are in the same address used by Asiwaju to open that account.’’
Omoawoke: I will say it again The desperation of Atiku is scary and he doesn’t mind sinking the entire country just to fulfill his ambition Before you bark, think like a strategic person, think in the art of war… The attempt to fight Tinubu is also destroying Nigeria and selling Nigeria in bad image… Hope you guys know that Donald Trump (a convicted felony, racist and Mr Epstein ) doesn’t care and his government is looking for any means available to punish black countries .. When you guys cried to him about Christian genocide- what did he do? He placed Nigeria on visa ban while diplomats and the elites and their families are already settled and still traveling the world as they wish… who’s suffering it? Same Nigerian irrespective of religious beliefs are suffering it today… Nigerians living in US see shege as some almost kpai because of hunger, they refused to give work authorization to Nigerians to work You all should continue cheering stuffs that would end up affecting you more, it only shows how little minded many Nigerians are
Can anyone destroy our country worse than what Tinubu and APC did in 2015 by importing terrorists to make Nigeria ungovernable before the master strategist went to Kaduna and begged Buhari out of retirement to make Jonathan a one term president? The same Buhari he called expired four years earlier o.
Whatever Atiku has done to save our country from Reno's drug baron is nothing compared to the above.
Osidazz19: Pls state for us all what and what Obi did as Governor in Anambra. What legacy projects did he implement? It's an insult to even mention Obi when speaking of Tinubu's many achievements in Lagos.
A man who invested state money into his family business is not a saint. He's a crook.
Where is Tinubu investing Lagos trillions annual budget if he has failed in 27 years of increasing tax burden on Lagosians, to do a tiny fraction of what Jakande did in just four years before Buhari locked him up after his 1983 only successful coup against democratic institutions in local, state and federal levels?
Do you think he is the worst crook?
Splashme: The first civilian governor of Lagos State, Alhaji Lateef Jakande, on Tuesday, said that the cancellation of the Lagos metroline project in 1985 was a major mistake and disservice to many Nigerians.
Jakande spoke in Lagos during the launch of a book which chronicled his life in politics and journalism.
The book, entitled, ‘Jakande: Leadership in Action’ is written by Dr. Bola Olaosebikan, who told the audience at the event that the All Progressives Congress presidential candidate, Maj. Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), was not responsible for the cancellation of the project.
Jakande said, “Reflecting on the metroline project, I think it is a major disservice to many Nigerians. Imagine how many people would have benefitted. It would have made life easier and changed the face of transport in Lagos. Whoever cancelled it or gave the advice towards its cancellation didn’t do right.”
The former governor asked Nigerians not to vote for unserious leaders in the coming polls, saying the elections presented Nigerians with a good opportunity that should not be squandered.
Expressing the hope that Nigeria would soon overcome its developmental challenges, Jakande said hope would be actualised faster if credible people emerged as leaders in the next dispensation.
He said, “This book comes at a very auspicious time in Nigeria’s history as we need leaders who can act. We need leaders who would not compromise the standards of good governance. God has blessed this nation the most in Africa, although we have not reached where we should be; with the right leaders, Nigeria would overcome its challenges.”

WHO SAYS 4 YEARS IN OFFICE IS NOT ENOUGH FOR MEANINGFUL ACHIEVEMENTS?

Dalohad: Chei, some urvhins go wan die... Acute runny stomach don gum Tinubb on top this news. This is not a good one . Looks like Tinubu's lawyers are the ones scamming him. Acute running stomach báwo?
Do you think that is what he was suffering from in Turkey when he was falling down yakata like Humpty Dumpty
olaadenigeria: The North are so confident that they alone determine election winners. This claim is possible if 1. The rulling party aspirant is from north, 2. If the country as a whole want change and the new party has a northern aspirant and no equal aspirant from sough. And many factors. Buhari won because of Jonathan and sought supporting, this is same to all winners. Tinubu 8 years is a must for APC, Atiku, Obi should just use this election to train for 2031 election.
Why must Tinubu, a southerner do 8 years when we would have had 17 years next election unlike the north's 11 years since 1999, largely because of Atiku's generosity and loyalty to Obasanjo in 2003 when northerners wanted Baba Iyabo to honour his one term promise to be like Mandela?
aieromon: According to sources available to us that time, Obasanjo said he will do a single term but after that, he decided to go for second term. I was physically present at Rivers state Governor’s Lodge when the heat became too much and Obasanjo in the presence of all of us knelt down in front of Atiku begging him to allow him do a second term. I think that was how Atiku missed the opportunity by agreeing to Obasanjo’s plea. His thought was that at least, if Obasanjo completes his second term, he will hand over to him but you all know the story of Third Term Agenda and that was how they fell apart. Atiku had the best opportunity to become president in 2003 and lost it. He had the support of PDP governors then.
Around November 2002, 15 of the 21 Governors from the PDP including me, had an ad hoc meeting at my lodge in Abuja to decide who should be nominated by the Governors Committee for election by PDP as the presidential nominee for the 2003 Election.
The Governors Committee decided almost unanimously to get a new candidate instead of President Obasanjo as the Committee was of the view that because of his military background, he was intolerant of dissent and had displayed very dictatorial and vindictive tendencies against those he perceived to be independent-minded and disloyal to him.
Immediately after the Governors meeting, I led the delegation of Governors to meet the then PDP Chairman, Chief Audu Ogbeh, at his residence around 2 am.
As the leader of the delegation, I spoke and communicated the views of the Governors to the Chairman, which was that the Governors had decided not to support President Obasanjo as PDPs nominee for the 2003 General Election.
The party chairman tried to persuade us to review our decision but when he saw our resolve, he told us that he would inform the President. I was later informed by Chief Audu Ogbeh that after we left his house he put an urgent call to the President and informed him of our decision.
What then followed were intense consultations before the PDP annual convention which took place in January 2003. Two days before the party convention, the Governors had a breakfast meeting with President Obasanjo.
I recall that at that meeting, the then Vice President Alhaji Abubakar Atiku told the President in the presence of the Governors that he was known to be very dictatorial, vindictive and unforgiving. The President appealed to the Governors to support him and assured both the Governors and the party leadership that if he was allowed to continue for the second term, he would adopt a more democratic approach.
On the basis of the President's assurance, given at that breakfast meeting, I led the move for the Governors to support his presidential nomination for the second term. However, notwithstanding my support for President Obasanjo's nomination for a second term, the President after the nomination, acted very shabbily towards me.
When I met him soon after the convention, he told me that he had learned that I had put forward the view that he was unsellable, unmarketable and unelectable. He then vowed that he was going to make sure that I was unsellable, unmarketable and unelectable.

According to Adesanya, Atiku met the governors the first day of the convention; they urged him to leave Obasanjo and seek the nomination himself. Atiku demurred; he also deflected the suggestion that he join Ekwueme. Finally, Atiku arranged a meeting between Obasanjo and the now irate governors. The governors railed that Obasanjo was hypocritically pursuing them for corruption, while turning a blind eye to corrupt politicians within his own Administration. Atiku supported the governor's position, telling Obasanjo that significant corruption was not the exclusive ambit of the governors and that serious transgressions occurred in the executive branch: he said it would be unjust to focus exclusively on gubernatorial excesses. Assuming the role of mediator, Atiku then asked both sides to affirm their mutual support and cease the antagonism being fueled by elements that wanted to destroy the PDP. The governors agreed to bury the hatchet, if Obasanjo would shelve the dossiers. Having demonstrated his influence with the governors, Atiku continued to play coy with Obasanjo.
In the end, Atiku extracted an extraordinary concession from the President. Obasanjo agreed to relinquish the entire domestic agenda to Atiku, including the appointment of key economic policy-makers. Since Obasanjo focused on the world arena during his first term and aspired for recognition as an international statesman, Atiku said that is where he would like Obasanjo's attentions to remain. Obasanjo would serve the role of a "super Foreign Minister" and ceremonial Head of State. As Adesanya understood the agreement, Atiku would be allowed to direct domestic economic policy while Obasanjo busied himself with debt relief, NEPAD, conflict resolution and other measures to shore up Nigeria's image abroad.

The President was dazed, Abayomi recalled. Jarred by the unexpected possibility of defeat, the usually know-it-all Obasanjo eagerly solicited counsel on how to escape the closing vise. Early that day, the dominant theme was to seek a court injunction postponing the convention. Proponents suggested the delay to afford Obasanjo time to marshal support and undermine Ekwueme's momentum. However, this idea was ultimately discarded, partially because of apprehension over the public's reaction. More importantly, the push for an injunction became less urgent when the President's advisors began to sense their man was regaining ground by the hour.
The President owed much of his recovery to his own tenacity and, at times, shamelessness. He pulled out virtually all the stops to clinch the nomination, according to Abayomi. For most of that day, the President's diet consisted of liberal portions of humble pie. The President pleaded and cajoled; on at least two occasions his eyes welled with emotion as he pursued fence-sitting delegates and governors. However, Obasanjo saved his best to keep Vice President Atiku from defecting.
With rumor swirling that Atiku would opt to run with Ekwueme, Obasanjo wasted no time visiting the Vice President's residence. Obasanjo begged, declaring he would not leave Atiku's home unless the Vice President accompanied him to win back the delegates and governors. The performance had the desired effect. Atiku joined Obasanjo in publicly lobbying the conventioneers. While it might not have been Obasanjo's finest hour it was the defining moment of the convention. What had been a suspenseful contest would now turn into a rout.
Bobloco: Atiku tackles Oyedele, says Nigerians deserve to know details of $5bn Abu Dhabi loan
Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has told President Bola Tinubu to be transparent in the deployment of the $5 billion Abu Dhabi loan as Nigerians and future generations of the country would bear its burden.
On Wednesday, Taiwo Oyedele, Nigeria’s finance minister, said the federal government would not publish details of how funds drawn from its $5 billion financing facility with First Abu Dhabi Bank (FAB) would be spent.
Oyedele was responding to questions on the government’s borrowing plan and the controversial financing arrangement with FAB during a media briefing in Abuja.
Asked whether the government would make details of the transaction and the deployment of the funds public, the minister said there was no need to treat the facility differently from other sources of government financing.
Oyedele said the transaction had already gone through the required approval process, including consideration by the national assembly.
The $5 billion facility is part of a wider $6 billion external borrowing package approved by the national assembly in March.
The government subsequently accessed about $1.5 billion as the first tranche of the FAB facility.
In a statement on Sunday by his media office, Atiku accused the administration of incompetence and financial impropriety, citing a lack of transparency in recent loan agreements.
He specifically criticised the government’s handling of the $5 billion facility from First Abu Dhabi Bank, insisting that taxpayers deserve full disclosure of how such funds will be utilised.
“Since assuming office on May 29, 2023, President Bola Tinubu’s administration has contracted significant new debt,” the statement reads.
“According to the Debt Management Office, the Tinubu administration has added N72 Trillion of fresh debt stock, bringing the total indebtedness to N159.35 trillion as at early 2026.”
Despite the borrowings, Atiku argued that Nigerians have remained poorer and less secure.
According to him, poverty levels have risen from 56 percent in 2023 to between 61 percent and 63 percent under the Tinubu administration, leaving over 140 million citizens trapped in multidimensional poverty.
Atiku criticised Oyedele for dismissing public calls to explain the Abu Dhabi loan.
“The government is obliged to explain every loan taken on behalf of Nigerians,” Atiku said.
“Every Kobo borrowed matters because citizens — both living and unborn — will bear the burden of repayment. Yet these loans have failed to improve their material wellbeing.”
He further noted that the federal government is required to pledge securities worth about 133 percent of the loan amount as collateral, making transparency even more critical.
Atiku reminded Nigerians that both the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and Fitch Ratings have raised concerns about the financing structure, citing risks to transparency and sovereign debt sustainability.
The former vice president urged Nigerians to hold the government accountable, stressing that borrowing without clear results undermines trust and jeopardises the nation’s economic future.
