Nigeria loses 47% of dollar millionaires, retains 4th position in Africa
Nigeria has lost nearly half of its dollar millionaires over the past decade, with the population of high-net-worth individuals falling by 47 per cent between 2015 and 2025, according to the 2025 Africa Wealth Report by Henley & Partners in collaboration with New World Wealth.
Despite the sharp erosion in private wealth, Nigeria retained its position as Africa’s fourth-largest hub for dollar millionaires, with 7,200 millionaires, 20 centi-millionaires (individuals with investable wealth of at least $100 million) and three billionaires, trailing only South Africa, Egypt and Morocco.
The report showed that South Africa remained the continent’s wealthiest country by number of dollar millionaires, with 41,100 millionaires, 112 centi-millionaires and eight billionaires. Egypt followed with 14,800 millionaires, 49 centi-millionaires and seven billionaires.
TimeManager: And this desperate fraud is still collecting huge tuition fee from students in his private university. Why can't he start from his own university?.

-Kiss the truth!
Don't you agree that he is far better than the progreThief who raised budget 100 times in Lagos but has less than 5% schools owned by the government
What is Tinubu doing with Lagos trillions yearly apart from stealing it like a petty thief?
FSBoperator: There's a housing bubble in the US now. House prices are grossly overvalued and the reason for this are: 1. Corporations like BlackRock are now buying up mortgage debt from banks and almost immediately inflating the property values on the homes they acquired the mortgage debt. This is one of the prime reason housing is spiking in the US. 2. Same corporations liaise with city councils , HOAs and environmental groups to block new development projects so as to create an artificial scarcity while still pumping up the value of their homes. 3. A typical single family first time buyer home use to average between 100-250k but now it's averaging between 500-800k. This has nothing to do with cost in actually building new homes as wages have stagnated for construction workers owing to illegal workers getting paid under the table far below industry rates and sometimes lower than minimum wage but because of bureaucratic red tapes that are meant to keep home prices up, investors and shareholders in BlackRock and other institutional investors happy and the boomers who own most homes in America remain rich to be able to afford going on vacation to Vegas to gamble half their earnings away . This is why Trump said he can't see to bringing down house prices because it will affect others already invested in it and is proposing 50y mortgages. All those inflated homes and corporate portfolio and owed debt from mortgages get accounted as part of US GDP which sees to US govt borrowing more on that same artificial GDP with debt now above GDP. A debt based economy will always create scarcity and inflation.
So why follow Tinubu dogmatically despite his huge debt burden on the economy creating scarcity and inflation to worsen APC's extreme poverty
onatisi: Most billionaires are debtors — but strategic ones. They borrow money to grow their businesses, not to cover personal expenses. The key difference between the rich and the poor lies in how they use debt: the poor take loans to survive, while the rich take loans to invest and multiply their wealth. As long as their investments generate enough returns to repay those loans and still profit, debt becomes a tool for expansion, not a trap.
The OP indeed contains element to show that he is a strategic investor, who should have a positive net worth despite his huge debt.
Is that not how Tinubu has plunged Nigeria into great debt despite removing subsidy to save billions of dollars, and making roads worse than when we had cheap petrol under PDP
DeLaRue: People just don't understand that we are all already benefitting in a less visible way.
They don't want to know that without the improving economic growth, naira's value would be lower. That in turn would have made everything even more expensive. That's exactly what will happen if any government goes back to paying subsidy.
No subsidy is tough. But bringing back subsidy will be worse as the value of the naira will collapse.
Of what value will subsidy be if a loaf of bread start selling for N4,000 or rice for N150,000?
When did bread sell for N4,000 when Atiku and PDP gave us cheap petrol and cheap dollars with less debt and less unemployment for high productivity that made us the biggest economy in Africa?
DeLaRue: Wonderful. Once we land somewhere around 6.5% annual growth, we just need to keep growing around that rate for about 15 consecutive years, Nigeria will truly begin to transition from being a low income economy to a middle income economy. Indonesia grew by around 5% per year for tge past 20 years
As wonderful as the 100 times growth in Lagos budget to N4.2 trillion in 27 years with worsening water supply and free education?
What is wonderful about that, to warrant more at the national level?
anonimi: Lagos, 3 other African cities rank among world’s least liveable in 2026
July 15, 2026
Four African cities have been ranked among the world’s 10 least liveable urban centres in the Economist Intelligence Unit’s (EIU) Global Liveability Index 2026, reflecting the continued impact of insecurity, pressure on public services, infrastructure gaps and governance challenges.
The annual index assessed 173 cities across five indicators: stability, healthcare, culture and environment, education, and infrastructure. Each city received a score out of 100 based on how well it performs across these areas.
This year’s rankings placed Harare (Zimbabwe), Lagos (Nigeria), Algiers (Algeria) and Tripoli (Libya) in the global bottom 10, alongside cities affected by conflict, economic challenges and weak infrastructure.
AWONEYAN: They will tell you, this doesn't bring food to table. No one is saying we have gotten there. But we are not where we used to be. All the Lambas of Atikus and Obi's bangles data are just signs of desperation to taste power.
The kind of desperation that made Tinubu ask Buhari to come out of retirement and make Jonathan a one term president after APC invited terrorists to destroy our country

anonimi: Nigeria remains fourth largest economy in Africa despite rebasing
July 21, 2025
Nigeria has retained its status as the fourth largest economy in Africa despite a rebasing exercise that expanded the country’s gross domestic product (GDP).
The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) announced that the economy expanded to N372.8 trillion ($243 billion) in 2024, down from N314.02 trillion in the prior year as more sectors in the informal economy were considered in its calculations.
The statistics bureau adopted 2019 as its base year away from 2010 that’s previously reported.
The rebasing exercise covers the period from 2019 to 2023 and reflects changes in the economy’s structure, sectoral contributions, and data sources.
Despite the overhaul, Nigeria fails to reclaim its erstwhile status as the largest economy in Africa.
According to the International Monetary Fund (IMF), South Africa remains the continent’s biggest economy with a GDP of $410.34 billion for a country with little over a quarter of Nigeria’s population.
Following the Southern African nation is Egypt with a GDP of $347 billion while Algeria maintains its third position having $268.9 billion as the size of its economy.
Although Nigeria’s economy grew 30 percent above the projected $188 billion estimate by the IMF this year, the rebasing was poised to place the economy as the biggest in Africa.
Osgilliat: Always doing things in an almajiri ways. Can someone please tell Atiku that this is not a military regime and there are constitutional laws and regulations to follow. Tinubu is doing things in a democratic manner, so he doesn’t offends state governors. He started it and he will finish it. Every states will comply to full local government autonomy before the end of his second tenure.
If the balablu bulaba clueless clown is doing things in a democratic way then why has he failed to do what the SCON ordered in 2024 about LGA autonomy
Vision101: Ask your client to be intelligent. Let him come out with original thoughts so that we can interogate them and know how smart he is.
The easiest thing for me to do is to look at holes in what you are doing and promise that I will do them better but it's more difficult for me to create new ideas.
Atiku was in government for eight years and we didn't hear him say anything about LG autonomy. In fact during that time it was dead.
Atiku’s record in government is far better than what this clueless Stockholm Syndrome master strategist of impoverishment has in Lagos for 27 years, and in the entire country for almost four years.
Deal with this.

Most tertiary institutions in the country have hiked their fees by over 150 %, putting serious strains on the finances of parents and guardians who also have to contend with the poor state of the economy which has reduced purchasing power and savings.
Checks by Vanguard Learning in public universities across the country show that the increment in obligatory fees, which started late last year is continuing, as a new session starts in some schools this January.
Only on January 6, this year, for instance, the Federal University of Technology, Akure, FUTA, Ondo State came out with a proposal to hike fees by over 100%.
Why is Tinubu only interested in punishing people who allow him to exercise their sovereignty? What is wrong with this ọmọ iyalọja Mọgaji?
anonimi: Nigeria: Tinubu imposed Fees on LASU - another major attack on Education
06 June 2006
Back in February two Lagos students were killed by police as they protested against the recent hike in school fees. In some cases fees have been increased a hundred times over. This is making it practically impossible for poor and working class Nigerian children to get an education.
"The Lagos State university students' union in conjunction with the NANS zone D and NANS JCC Lagos Axis berate the satanic increment in LASU school fees and the killing of some students of LASU during the peaceful protest against the increment in school fees. And call for the immediate reversal of these exploitative fees as a prerequisite to let the less privilege have access to Education".
These was the first paragraph in the leaflet issued by the students' union alongside with NANS zone D and JCC Lagos in February after the students' protest against the fees, which led to the killing of two students by the police on the command of the Lagos State Government.
It will be recalled that immediately after the appointment of a new vice chancellor last year, December 2005, the Tinubu regime of Lagos State announced to Lagos residents that the government could not afford to subsidize education and that in line with the ‘reforms' in the education sector, there cannot be any free education. The university authorities were directed to increase the fees from 250 Naira for old students to 25,000 Naira, while the freshmen's old fee of 1, 000 Naira was increased to N35, 000. This increment exclude the acceptance fees N10,000 introduced earlier to the fresh students two years ago.
It is very important to note that even while the official school fees were placed at N250 earlier, an average student still pays as much as N25,000 to the university or its agents. This takes the form of handouts, registration fees, etc.
Not excluding the current attempt to deny the children of the working class education by the newly imposed post-JAMB test, according to ruling elites, it is to checkmate examination malpractice experienced during jamb exams but from reality, it has been confirmed as another conduit pipe through which money is generated and siphoned without question. This post jamb fee in LASU is N2,000. All these fees stated above do not include various expenses to be incurred while going through the registration processes.
The Tinubu administration carrying out these attacks on students is a master of deception. Towards the end of his first four years, he became one of the most hated governors in Nigeria as he committed enormous atrocities against workers, students and rendered many people homeless. The sacking of over 10,000 workers in 2001/2002 over the N7,500 minimum wage protests is still fresh in the memory of the working class despite the treachery of the labour leadership.
Even the supposedly brilliant lawyer who continued his master plan after Engineer Funsho Williams was murdered, did the same progreThief thing. APC leaders fail to deliver free education for all children in schools with adequate numbers of well paid professional teachers but have no problem hiking the fees for a university built by progressive governor Jakande.
"Tinubu made living in Nigeria expensive. I will make Nigeria affordable again" - Alhaji Atiku Abubakar
Why would anyone prefer expensive Nigeria to an affordable one, where jobs are plentiful and everyone is working to add value to the country
Okay. Not exactly what he said. But that is exactly what he implied. How much is the minimum wage of Lagos state civil servants? He seems to be out of touch and his statements are highly irresponsible!
Governor Babatunde Fashola battled hard weekend, to justify the astronomical hike in tuition fees recently introduced in Lagos State University, LASU, by the state government. Recall that the state government had increased tuition fees paid in the university from N25,000 to N250,000 per session.
Fashola, who spoke at Government College, Ughelli’s, annual luncheon party in Lagos, said Nigerians were unconsciously making the country one where there would be separate schools for the rich and poor.
According to him, critics of the increment are indirectly calling for a Nigerian society which will be divided into poor university for the poor and rich university for rich people.
He said: “Countries that do not prioritise education are always at the mercy of those who place a high premium on education.
“Where in the world have we seen tuition fee of university of N25,000? You cannot find this anywhere. Even the nations that are developed and wealthy do not give education for N25,000.
“LASU started very well and over the years, the population grew and beyond the available facilities and the school began to deteriorate. We are determined to rescue LASU and we will not make it a school for the poor.
“We are unconsciously making Nigeria a society where there will be a school for the rich and one for the poor. “Several people in this country pay so much for education abroad while the schools here continue to deteriorate. It is only in the university that the children of the rich and children of the poor can sit in the same classroom.”
Is this how Tinubu is supposed to be building Nigeria with the billions of dollars saved from subsidies removal and more borrowing in addition to higher tax burden on us

Compared to Atiku, Obi has nothing to offer Nigerians apart from photo shoots and sound bites.

He cannot do it because his own business survives on consumption. Is that a lie? He has been an importer and I said he deals with cash and carry economics; container economics, imports”.
“All the goods that can be produced in Nigeria, Obi imports them in his supermarkets. That is consumption economics. That kind of person cannot tell you that he is moving you from consumption to production. He will then be committing self-economic suicide and Obi will not do that to himself”.
“So, Obi is deceiving everybody and I can’t take that back because that is true.
NLCreator: Peter Obi, presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the 2023 elections, has defended the purchase of sports utility vehicles (SUVs) for members of the national assembly.
There have been reports that the leadership of the 10th national assembly has bought SUVs for all lawmakers.
Each SUV is said to be valued at N160 million.
The LP had asked members of the party in the national assembly to kick against “wastage”.
While responding to questions during a press conference in Abuja on Monday, the former governor of Anambra said the SUVs are not personal cars of the lawmakers, noting that they are for official use.
“Let me start with the issue of Labour Party members in the house. I have actually discussed this issue with them,” Obi said.
“Surprisingly, I can tell you I heard that these vehicles are official cars. They have to use it. It is meant for office.
“So it is not as if it is their vehicle. They said it is official cars and you are meant to use it while you are in the senate.”
Obi also hinted at contesting for the country’s number one position in 2027, adding that Nigeria deserves dedicated and visionary leaders who will lead the country towards a brighter future.

Her name was mentioned as a member of Tinubu's cabinet as an attempt to disprove the allegation.
SmartyPants: If you read what you quoted, I believe the answer is already facing you squarely. Obasanjo secured the Paris Club refund which meant that for the first time in decades, all our revenue was unencumbered. This meant that we had a massive flow of money to spend. Why would we have borrowed then?
The real question is why did GEJ borrow? He is the only one out of all four who inherited a government without debts. So what sequence of events led him to plunge us back into debt during a global oil boom??
And none of this should be read as saying Tinubu is justified in keeping up with borrowing. No, but the formulation of your question is ridiculous to the extent that it pretends the PDP stewarded this nations resources faithfully.
Jonathan did not inherit a government without debts from Yar'Adua. Why are you omitting Yar'Adua from the sequence?
There was no global oil boom under Jonathan. That was under Yar'Adua.
anonimi: FG, States, LGs Share N568.4 Billion for Oct 15 NOVEMBER 2013
Also, $1billion was proposed for distribution to complement shortfall in expected revenue." The $1billion is a compromise by the FG over its words in September not to augment shortfalls anymore.
Responding to the presentation, the chairman of the States Commissioners of Finance and Ebonyi State Commissioner of Finance, Mr Timothy Odaah, lamented that the statutory allocation was getting smaller and smaller. "It appears this is the worst in terms of returns. This is the least in allocations as far as this year is concerned. We are mourning the dearth of funds and this is a wakeup call for states and local governments to buoy up their internally generated revenue."
While appreciating the "magnanimity" of President Goodluck Jonathan to approve the $1billion from the excess crude account and to be shared among the federal, state and local governments, Odaah expressed disappointment with the returns made by the NNPC.
He said that the states had requested for $2bn to complement for the shortfall in revenue but got only $1billion. In September, Odaah and fellow commissioners had walked out of the Accountant General of the Federation (AGF) when the federal government said that the framework of the 2013 budget was no longer realistic and it won't augment shortfall in revenue. Odaah raised issues with the statutory allocations of previous months.

thisweekng: The Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy Chief Olawale Edun has said the last time Nigeria’s economy looked stable was about a decade ago.
He made this statement during his maiden press conference as Minister of Finance where he outlined President Bola Tinubu’s vision, agenda and strategy for the economy.
He said, “I think as we all know, we are not where we should be. The economy is barely growing above the rate of population growth.
“But it was not always so, and I think in trying to look at the way forward, if we now have a situation of slow growth, double-digit inflation, weak/depreciating exchange rate, as well as security concerns that are resulting in an economy that is not growing and not taking Nigerians out of poverty.
“If we think back to the last time when the economy was stable- when it was growing, when inflation was low, and the interest rate was affordable, that period was about a decade ago. Growth was about 6% in 2013 and 2014.” Private sector to drive the economy

Splashme: The first civilian governor of Lagos State, Alhaji Lateef Jakande, on Tuesday, said that the cancellation of the Lagos metroline project in 1985 was a major mistake and disservice to many Nigerians.
Jakande spoke in Lagos during the launch of a book which chronicled his life in politics and journalism.
The book, entitled, ‘Jakande: Leadership in Action’ is written by Dr. Bola Olaosebikan, who told the audience at the event that the All Progressives Congress presidential candidate, Maj. Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), was not responsible for the cancellation of the project.
Jakande said, “Reflecting on the metroline project, I think it is a major disservice to many Nigerians. Imagine how many people would have benefitted. It would have made life easier and changed the face of transport in Lagos. Whoever cancelled it or gave the advice towards its cancellation didn’t do right.”
The former governor asked Nigerians not to vote for unserious leaders in the coming polls, saying the elections presented Nigerians with a good opportunity that should not be squandered.
Expressing the hope that Nigeria would soon overcome its developmental challenges, Jakande said hope would be actualised faster if credible people emerged as leaders in the next dispensation.
He said, “This book comes at a very auspicious time in Nigeria’s history as we need leaders who can act. We need leaders who would not compromise the standards of good governance. God has blessed this nation the most in Africa, although we have not reached where we should be; with the right leaders, Nigeria would overcome its challenges.”

WHO SAYS 4 YEARS IN OFFICE IS NOT ENOUGH FOR MEANINGFUL ACHIEVEMENTS?
IT'S A FACT THAT 90% OF GOVERNORS IN NIGERIA SINCE 1999 WITH REVENUES AT THEIR DISPOSAL CANNOT BOAST OF A QUARTER OF THESE ACHIEVEMENTS EVEN WITHIN THEIR EIGHT YEARS IN OFFICE.
Infotubia9ja: The answer is very simple.. they are very ignorant and uneducated. Because they think embezzlement of public funds to go buy houses abroad in this case either usa or UK is a good investment for them to have and sell in the future for greater profit. And without them knowing what they digging their grave.
Some buy houses with HOA and most times they forfit their houses to HOA fines due to lack of metainance culture. Secondly they will want to sell in the future thinking they making profit but not knowing thats not how most american and UK economy works for example right now in america there is a housing crisis where people are not buying or selling their houses due to interest rate and now houses that one of those politicians may have bought for about $3million five or eight years ago is now worth about $1.7million which is a huge loss in value. They dont live in those houses just lock them up or give to friends and relatives to live in and with time the house will start having fixing issues and they waste extra money for repairs over and over thereby sinking more money or sell at a huge loss. Also every year, they pay morgauage taxes like yearly to the thousands which is stipulated by law. And in some cases, they dont pay for some years and the government takes the house from them.
Moral of they story they think they are making smart investments but they are not. Instead of them to use that money to invest in nigeria to make nigeria great like for example creating a new hydro power plant to power a full state 24/7 they use the money for personal gains at the end they all kpai and leave those stollen wealth behind such an irony of life.. greed to the last.. leaving other young generations to suffer for their actions. Such a pity
How can you say that our leaders are uneducated and ignorant? How can a Chicago trained accountant with Mobil experience and his Osun brother be described as that?
By the way what is HOA?
thewinning101: PANDORA PAPERS: Buhari visited Tinubu in corruption-tainted London villa acquired by Oyetola
Governor Oyetola, a relative of Mr Tinubu, may have sabotaged his own country by buying the exotic property as Nigeria made to seize it.
ByNicholas IbekweandTaiwo-Hassan Adebayo October 7, 2021 in Headline Stories, Pandora Papers Reading Time: 8 mins read
It was a meeting of two of Nigeria’s most influential politicians in London – President Muhammadu Buhari was visiting political kingmaker and senior member of his ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Bola Tinubu.
In July, the presidency announced that Mr Buhari was heading to London for an education summit. The office also added that the president would also see his doctors for “medical check-up”.
Coincidentally, Mr Tinubu, who had travelled to London earlier, was also receiving treatment for an undisclosed ailment in the British capital. So, a perfect setting for both men to meet was created.
maestroferddi: This analysis of yours is comic, I have to say... Who told you that the removal or return of subsidy is a deal breaker in this election? Truth be told, the boat has sailed for Atiku.... He lost the plot when he allowed Wike to bully him out of PDP without putting up any fight. Do you know why Tinubu looks so strong? Because he understands the dynamics of African politics: ruthlessness.
Is it Atiku's lack of ruthlessness that made him not cede to northern pressure to make Obasanjo a one term president in 2003 as he promised to be like Mandela when he was released from Abacha's prison?
2003 was the first time Buhari asked for the job of president and failed to get it,. He locked down northern bloc votes from then until 2015 when Tinubu made him president.
aieromon: According to sources available to us that time, Obasanjo said he will do a single term but after that, he decided to go for second term. I was physically present at Rivers state Governor’s Lodge when the heat became too much and Obasanjo in the presence of all of us knelt down in front of Atiku begging him to allow him do a second term. I think that was how Atiku missed the opportunity by agreeing to Obasanjo’s plea. His thought was that at least, if Obasanjo completes his second term, he will hand over to him but you all know the story of Third Term Agenda and that was how they fell apart. Atiku had the best opportunity to become president in 2003 and lost it. He had the support of PDP governors then.
Around November 2002, 15 of the 21 Governors from the PDP including me, had an ad hoc meeting at my lodge in Abuja to decide who should be nominated by the Governors Committee for election by PDP as the presidential nominee for the 2003 Election.
The Governors Committee decided almost unanimously to get a new candidate instead of President Obasanjo as the Committee was of the view that because of his military background, he was intolerant of dissent and had displayed very dictatorial and vindictive tendencies against those he perceived to be independent-minded and disloyal to him.
Immediately after the Governors meeting, I led the delegation of Governors to meet the then PDP Chairman, Chief Audu Ogbeh, at his residence around 2 am.
As the leader of the delegation, I spoke and communicated the views of the Governors to the Chairman, which was that the Governors had decided not to support President Obasanjo as PDPs nominee for the 2003 General Election.
The party chairman tried to persuade us to review our decision but when he saw our resolve, he told us that he would inform the President. I was later informed by Chief Audu Ogbeh that after we left his house he put an urgent call to the President and informed him of our decision.
What then followed were intense consultations before the PDP annual convention which took place in January 2003. Two days before the party convention, the Governors had a breakfast meeting with President Obasanjo.
I recall that at that meeting, the then Vice President Alhaji Abubakar Atiku told the President in the presence of the Governors that he was known to be very dictatorial, vindictive and unforgiving. The President appealed to the Governors to support him and assured both the Governors and the party leadership that if he was allowed to continue for the second term, he would adopt a more democratic approach.
On the basis of the President's assurance, given at that breakfast meeting, I led the move for the Governors to support his presidential nomination for the second term. However, notwithstanding my support for President Obasanjo's nomination for a second term, the President after the nomination, acted very shabbily towards me.
When I met him soon after the convention, he told me that he had learned that I had put forward the view that he was unsellable, unmarketable and unelectable. He then vowed that he was going to make sure that I was unsellable, unmarketable and unelectable.

According to Adesanya, Atiku met the governors the first day of the convention; they urged him to leave Obasanjo and seek the nomination himself. Atiku demurred; he also deflected the suggestion that he join Ekwueme. Finally, Atiku arranged a meeting between Obasanjo and the now irate governors. The governors railed that Obasanjo was hypocritically pursuing them for corruption, while turning a blind eye to corrupt politicians within his own Administration. Atiku supported the governor's position, telling Obasanjo that significant corruption was not the exclusive ambit of the governors and that serious transgressions occurred in the executive branch: he said it would be unjust to focus exclusively on gubernatorial excesses. Assuming the role of mediator, Atiku then asked both sides to affirm their mutual support and cease the antagonism being fueled by elements that wanted to destroy the PDP. The governors agreed to bury the hatchet, if Obasanjo would shelve the dossiers. Having demonstrated his influence with the governors, Atiku continued to play coy with Obasanjo.
In the end, Atiku extracted an extraordinary concession from the President. Obasanjo agreed to relinquish the entire domestic agenda to Atiku, including the appointment of key economic policy-makers. Since Obasanjo focused on the world arena during his first term and aspired for recognition as an international statesman, Atiku said that is where he would like Obasanjo's attentions to remain. Obasanjo would serve the role of a "super Foreign Minister" and ceremonial Head of State. As Adesanya understood the agreement, Atiku would be allowed to direct domestic economic policy while Obasanjo busied himself with debt relief, NEPAD, conflict resolution and other measures to shore up Nigeria's image abroad.

The President was dazed, Abayomi recalled. Jarred by the unexpected possibility of defeat, the usually know-it-all Obasanjo eagerly solicited counsel on how to escape the closing vise. Early that day, the dominant theme was to seek a court injunction postponing the convention. Proponents suggested the delay to afford Obasanjo time to marshal support and undermine Ekwueme's momentum. However, this idea was ultimately discarded, partially because of apprehension over the public's reaction. More importantly, the push for an injunction became less urgent when the President's advisors began to sense their man was regaining ground by the hour.
The President owed much of his recovery to his own tenacity and, at times, shamelessness. He pulled out virtually all the stops to clinch the nomination, according to Abayomi. For most of that day, the President's diet consisted of liberal portions of humble pie. The President pleaded and cajoled; on at least two occasions his eyes welled with emotion as he pursued fence-sitting delegates and governors. However, Obasanjo saved his best to keep Vice President Atiku from defecting.
With rumor swirling that Atiku would opt to run with Ekwueme, Obasanjo wasted no time visiting the Vice President's residence. Obasanjo begged, declaring he would not leave Atiku's home unless the Vice President accompanied him to win back the delegates and governors. The performance had the desired effect. Atiku joined Obasanjo in publicly lobbying the conventioneers. While it might not have been Obasanjo's finest hour it was the defining moment of the convention. What had been a suspenseful contest would now turn into a rout.
SmartyPants: The numbers don't lie indeed but you are yet to understand the story they are telling you. The critical fact is that there is a pattern to the numbers which shows that average GDP growth per presidential term dropped consistently and took a sharp decline under Jonathan and only began to pick up under Tinubu. That tells you something fundamental changed. And what was it?
Obasanjo cleared Nigeria's foreign debt through the historic Paris club refund. By the midpoint of GEJ's tenure, Nigeria was back in debt again. The windfall from the OBJ years, which Ngozi Okonjo Iweala advised the Federal and State governments to save, was squandered and we went right back to borrowing.
I saw one person up there say we were paying subsidy throughout these years but such people do not realize there is no free lunch anywhere. We were paying from money we did not have. That was why Jonathan's move to remove subsidies in 2011 was the right move but he lacked the strength of character to do the right thing even if he would be seen as the bad guy by the masses.
Why is Tinubu borrowing more than PDP presidents who gave us cheap petrol even when oil price was low, even though roads are worse than before
“This is how the Benin–Asaba Expressway looks yesterday, Thursday, August 20, 2026. Look at how cars and trailers are stuck because of the bad road.
