Former Anambra state governor, Chief Jim Nwobodo, has stated that he did not receive N500m as rumoured, instead he got N100m which he he disbursed.

Nwobodo who stated categorically that he has never met ex-National Security Adviser, Sambo Dasuki, said he received the N100m from former PDP National Chairman Adamu Mu’azu, whose wherabouts the EFCC does not know.

He denied ever collecting money from Dasuki who he said he had never met. “I have never met Dasuki in my life. I don’t know Dasuki. Ex-Minister Bashir Yuguda I know, just as a former minister like any Nigerian.

“I got N100million for campaign purposes and not N500million. I did not receive the money from either Dasuki or Yuguda. The money I received was from a former National Chairman of PDP, Adamu Muazu. I gave the list of the disbursement according to states to the party,” he told The Nation.

In a statement issued by John Okoreni on behalf of Nwobodo said: “The attention of Senator (Dr.) Jim Nwobodo has been drawn to news items where it was mentioned that he received the sum of one hundred million naira (N100,000,000) from Bashir Yuguda, ex-Minister of State for Finance for the purpose of the last presidential election.

“Senator (Dr.) Jim Nwobodo states as follows: That he was the chairman of the Contact Committee of the PDP Presidential campaign for the South East Zone

“The Committee was appointed by the party and inaugurated by its then National Chairman, Dr. Adamu Mu’azu

“That the Committee oversaw the five states of the Zone, namely: Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu and Imo State

“Members of the Committee were three for each state; Senator Jim Nwobodo, Chairman (Enugu), Chief Onyema Ogochukwu, Secretary (Abia), Ambassador Ojo Maduekwe (Abia), Senator Adolphus Wabara (Abia), Prof. A.B.C. Nwosu (Anambra), Senator Ben Ndi Obi (Anambra), Senator Joy Emodi (Anambra), Ambassador Frank Ogbuweu (Ebonyi), Senator Ben Collins Ndu (Enugu), Ambassador Fidel Ayogu (Enugu), Chief Emmanuel Iwanyanwu (Imo), Chief Achike Udenwa (Imo) and Chief Innocent Nwoga (Imo).

“That the only fund received by the committee for its work in the five South-Eastern states was N100million and the money was received from the then National Chairman of PDP, Dr. Adamu Muazu, for logistics, travelling, mobilisation of party members in the zone for the presidential election.

“That the fund was properly disbursed to the states and duly signed by members of the Committee for each State and accounted for to the party.

“That at no time did Senator Jim Nwobodo receive the money from any person other than the then National Chairman of the party.

“That it would be unusual for Senator Nwobodo and other members of his committee to query the source of the campaign fund coming from the National Chairman of his party for official functions and purposes.

“This statement is meant to put the records straight and correct the impression making round in the media on the alleged distribution of money by Bashir Yuguda as it concerns Senator Nwobodo.

Two men, who claimed to be President Mohammadu Buhari’s private security aides, were on Saturday, arrested at the Afao-Ekiti country home of the Ekiti State Governor, Mr Ayodele Fayose.

They were arrested for presenting themselves as staff of the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA), with influence over the report of the military panel set up to investigate alleged involvement in partisan politics by some soldiers and officers during the 2014/ 2015 gubernatorial election conducted in some states such as Ekiti, Osun, Rivers and Akwa-Ibom.

The two men, Benedict Ola Idega and Abdulsalami Leader H. claimed that they already had the preliminary report of the military panel and that with the cooperation of the governor, they could manipulate the final report if necessary.

They also said the army panel report was targeted at some top army officers that the Federal Government wanted
to punish.

Governor Fayose, who was suspicious of the men’s real intentions, had informed the State Commissioner of Police and Director of the State Security Service, with the Police Commissioner already putting men of the State Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) on standby.

The two men, in a meeting with the governor presented what they called photocopy of page three of the preliminary report to show that they meant business.

The purported copy of the page three bore the logo of the Nigerian Army.

After turning copy of the page three of the purported preliminary report, the governor gave the impression that he was satisfied with all that they said and asked them to wait at his waiting room for him to show appreciation.

He then called in the Commissioner of Police and DSS Director, who in turn asked their men to move in and arrest the two men.

The identity card found on Abdulsalami bore “GMB SECURITY” and it was stated at the back that he (Abdulsalami) is the security staff of

Gen. Mohammadu Buhari with Number 34, Lobitto Crescent, Wuse II, Abuja as issuer’s address and 088133636478 and 08057010255 as telephone numbers. Benedict Ola Idega was with identity card bearing Federal Capital Development Authority.

The two men, who lodged at a popular hotel along Bank Road, Ado Ekiti are now being detained at the Police Headquarters, Ado Ekiti alongside another suspected accomplice, who was found in their hotel room when policemen visited the hotel for a search.

Special Assistant to the governor on Public Communications and New Media, Lere Olayinka, who confirmed the incident said even though it has been established that they were impersonators, the real intention of the men were yet to be ascertained.

He said; “We don’t want to pre-empt the security agents that are already investigating the incident. But it is certain that they have ulterior motives. We are also not ruling out the possibility of an attempt to set-up the governor, obtain money from him under false pretence or even harm him.

“Therefore, we expect that the security agencies will do their job thoroughly by ascertaining their real motives and their other accomplices.

“However, we must say that anyone thinking that report of any military panel can be used to upturn an electoral victory already upheld by the Supreme Court, which is the final destination for dispute on governorship election must be thinking of committing judicial coup d’état, which by all standard is treason.”

Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation and National Leader of the Social Democratic Party, Chief Olu Falae, has said the N100m he collected from a former Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party’s Board of Trustees, Chief Tony Anenih, was fully remitted to his party.

Falae, a former presidential candidate of the Alliance for Democracy, told PUNCH in an interview on Saturday that the SDP and the PDP has a written agreement on the endorsement of the latter’s presidential candidate in the 2015 election, former President Goodluck Jonathan.

He said, “The PDP’s Board of Trustees’ chairman came to me in Akure to seek our support. We gave him six conditions; that they should have zero tolerance for corruption, create job for the unemployed, fight insurgency and restore security in Nigeria, reduce recurrent expenditure to have money for capital development, etc; that if they (PDP) accept those conditions, we would support them.”

According to him, the former ruling party agreed to the terms orally.

Falae explained that he later wrote to Anenih, who wrote back to accept the conditions. “That was the basis for our cooperation to support their presidential candidate; that was the purpose for which the money was given,” he stated.

Part of the $2.1bn arms procurement fund allegedly diverted by former National Security Adviser, Col. Sambo Dasuki (retd.), was said to have been allegedly used to fund the electioneering of the PDP in the 2015 general elections.

Residents of Isale-Aro area of Osogbo, capital of Osun state, have been thrown into mourning after fire burnt a 75-year-old man, Lamina Ishola, to death. The fire incident, according to an eyewitness account, started around 9:00pm on Thursday.

The eyewitness told THISDAY that the neighbourhood had noticed thick flame oozing out of one of the rooms in the mud house where Ishola laid. The eyewitness explained that some residents of the area had made frantic efforts to put off the inferno before fire-fighters arrived the scene to complement the efforts of the sympathisers.

But Ishola, a father of two - a ten-year-old and a girl, aged seven, was unlucky as the fire had burned him to death before help came his way.

When THISDAY visited the bereaved family of Ishola who stay in the same compound with him, they wore a mournful look. The 71-year-old younger brother to the deceased who summoned courage to speak with THISDAY said the fire was caused by a locally-made lantern that uses kerosene.

Late Ishola’s brother who identified himself as Ademola Oseni said someone had bought the lantern for Ishola after the Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN) disconnected electricity supply to his house when he could not pay his bill.

Oseni said Ishola, who was not in good mental condition owing to an injury he sustained in an accident could have mistakenly hit the lantern while asleep, resulting in the fire that consumed him. He therefore called on Osun state government to come to the aid of the children Ishola left behind, saying that their mother had died long time ago.

Oseni said the remains of late Ishola was buried early Friday according to Islamic rites in his compound.

When contacted, the Public Relations Officer of the Osun state Police Command, Mrs. Folasade Odoro, said the police was not aware of the fire incident. She said,
“It has not been reported to the station.”

Egypt's top appeals court upheld on Saturday a three-year prison sentence for ousted president Hosni Mubarak and his two sons for corruption.

It was not immediately clear, however, how long Mubarak would remain in detention. Both of his sons were set free in October with time served taken into account.

Mubarak, 87, has spent most of his time in a military hospital since his arrest in 2011, months after his ouster in popular uprising.

In May, a court sentenced him and his sons to three years for having embezzled 125 million Egyptian pounds (about $16m) from funds meant for the maintenance of presidential palaces.


They were fined that same amount and an extra 21 million pounds.

Charges against Mubarak, who ruled for three decades, had been dropped in a separate trial for the killings of protesters during the uprising.

The prosecution has appealed that verdict.
