Did I say so? Your response alone shows the problem with Nigerian graduates. Your English comprehension is poor.

Of course they will employ Nigerian graduates but there are graduates that are deployed to the less career progressive parts of the business and there are those that are deployed to the star roles. They are not going to send a graduate from Oxford or LSE to mundane roles. The minute the are employed they are seen as future CEOs with international connections from their universities, they are groomed as such. You on the other hand have to prove yourself.

Secondly, a firm like IBTC will get the best of the Nigerian graduates. I never said all Nigerian public university graduates are bad. What I also said is that there are certain public universities that will never make it into a company like IBTC.

Dear nairalander,

If I have a person like you in my talent resources team I will redeploy you out of that department with immediate effect because you have this condescending attitude towards Nigerian universities most especially lower-tier universities.

I have seen someone that graduated from a university in England and he knows nothing. A graduate from lasu dusted him.

You are part of those who believe that everything foreign is better than our own indigenous. There are brilliant minds in lower-tier Universities so therefore I will consider them and give them a chance, not all are dullards. They have brilliant minds.

In summary, not all graduates who finished at top-ranked Universities are brilliant while there are brilliant minds in lower-ranked Universities.

Oga I am telling you the reality. Life is not about what is fair, life is about what happens in reality. When you advertise for a job, you get many CVS, hundreds sometimes thousands, nobody has time to look through all of them. You need to give an employer a reason to stop and even read your CV.

If it is a computer that is sifting through your CV, it is looking for key words. If it is a human, the 2 things that will make him a recruiter to read your CV are the university you attended and/ or your class of degree. If a university has a good reputation, I will stop to read the CV, if it has a bad reputation or I have encountered a graduate from that University that turned out to be a quack, the next time I see that university, I won’t even read it except I see 1st class.

This is why sometimes when you apply for the best jobs at the best companies they don’t even reply because your Cv was not even read. Say you apply for a job at one of the top law firms in the country, the law firms know which Nigerian universities have goodie the best law programs. You are also competing with people who went to Cambridge , LSE, Oxford as well as 2nd tier UK universities like Coventry, Sheffield, surrey etc. so when you send your Cv with Michael Okpara university, it will never get read. Among Nigerian universities, the guy from LASU or Unilag, UI or Covenant will be always be ahead of you. It is only the jobs where these graduates do not apply to that your Cv may get a looked at. Even then you better have a 1st class.-

This is how recruitment works in the real world even abroad. You either go to the best schools or you try and get noticed by having a 1st class. As far as talent, sometimes you are not employed for your talent but for your connections.

Thank you for your detailed breakdown analysis.

However, my point of view still stands.

You have answered your own question

Most can’t. Speak to any employer. I am talking here about public universities.

Please when I say employer, I mean serious employers and serious jobs. I am not talking about marketing, admin assistants, receptionists, etc. these are jobs for people with “O” levels not graduates.

So the likes of Stanbic ibtc(multinational organization) that employ young graduates from Nigerian universities into their trainee program are unserious. Is that what you are saying?

From What Universities? I don’t think you understand that as a graduate from a Nigerian university you are automatically at the back of the queue. Especially a government university. We employers do not rate your degrees because we have seen the products from Nigerian universities. They are generally not up to the task.

Okay.

If i may ask, which firm do you employ for or work for as their talent resource manager?

Going by what you said, it is so wrong of you to be profiling graduates from Nigeria public universities as sub standard.
Talents are everywhere and as a good talent resource manager you are supposed to widen your search gap.

The reality is that if she could have gotten a better job, she won’t be doing marketing g job where we all know what you are really selling is sex. If you are a graduate with a good degree from a good university you will not be on N350k

I disagree with you. Even if she has a good result from school, she might struggle to get a job.
There are graduates out there with good results that are doing shitty jobs of 150k salary per month.

This is wrong and false.

I have been able to interact with a lot of people from this thread who did interviews and failed. They reapplied for other roles and were successful. An interview is a meeting where they physically assess you and your suitability for the role.

If you weren't successful, it means you were not suitable for that role. You may be suitable for other roles.

Imagine applying for a role as the chief information security officer. At the interview stage, they realise that you're not fit for the job.

Meanwhile, you're really good at customer service.

I know others who were successful in an interview but unfortunately, the role has been filled or is limited. They'll keep you in a pool. So when next there's an availability, you're contacted ASAP.

Someone from Nairaland was in this scenario for a couple of months. She has gotten an offer now.

Don't give up!

Thank you so much for the detailed insight Richmond.

The reason why I asked the question was that I did an interview for client service officer Is operation and wasn't successful so I applied for the role of internal control officer insurance and till now I am yet to be summoned for the next step and my status is showing open on the application job portal.

Thank you Richmond

Hi!

I don't work in HR. I don't know anyone who works there.
I genuinely have no influence over employment or any hiring process.

I only provide information and guidance on what you need to know and our culture here at Stanbic IBTC.

Go to the career portal of Stanbic IBTC website. Check for suitable roles and shoot at as many as you feel you're qualified for.

The worst that can happen is a rejection mail.

When you get that, give it a go again.

I know people who tried many times before eventually getting in.

Wishing you all the very best.

Cheers!

Hello Richmond

Thank you for all you do.

I appreciate you.

Please is it true that if you get to an interview stage of recruitment and you don't get the job and you apply for another job, is it true that they won't consider you for that job because you had applied for one earlier?

Can you do this same uber driving in Nigeria? The answer is no....So the abroad is still better...uber drivers abroad have guaranteed security but uber drivers in Nigeria are not safe, many are killed, kidnapped and vehicle snatched...

You said Nigeria is better, what govt policy now is encouraging businesses to grow in Nigeria? The answer is non....

Yiu said Nigeria is better, What is Nigerian minimum wage? Zero cant take care of one person even before this satanic inflation recently started....etc

So, when people say Nigeria is better than abroad, I see it as deception from such person, he/she just wants to discourage others from going there..

I believe no matter how plenty the bills abroad are, the truth is that, you get value for the bills and taxes you pay for unlike Nigeria where you pay taxes and bill and never get to benefit from the govt you pay to..e.g you pay light bill but get only 7 days of light in a month like where i live .. .

Abroad and Nigeria nor be mate, let's stop comparing the two...even you that wrote this post, if your parents have been treating you bad from child birth till now, will you love and be patrotic to such parents? Oga talk truth make devil still shame..

What a brilliant talk.

He should not be complaining at all. Does he thinks that abroad is eldorado? Was he expecting to break into Hollywood stardom because he is a Nigeria nollywood star?
Most Nigerians stars that didn't make it in the Nigeria movie industry do resort to odd jobs when they move abroad.

He should be thankful that he can pay his bills being a uber driver. I feel that there is dignity in labour no matter how little you earn from it, as long as it puts food on your table be grateful.

If he feels that the job he is doing over there doesn't befit his status then he should come back home and face Nigeria reality.

Abeg he should not be complaining o because moving abroad will really humble you and I except him to know that.

Thanks a lot. That’s what they don’t understand. Most of them are born to worship money. They don’t know how to make money worship them.

Some of them are on high BP medications because of untold stress and hardship they have caused themselves because they want to save money and be their own landlord.

Some have low sperm count and couldn’t father a child due to the stress they face everyday. The children they call their own are from another father but their wives managed to pin it on them.
They are happy on Friday evening and sad on every Sunday evening.

A very elderly friend on mine who has a house in Mowe and working at Agbara has to rent a room sef con in Agbara when the stress of commuting everyday wan ki!! am.
He would only go home on Friday evening and return to Agbara every Monday morning.

Lol, keep deceiving yourself.
For your info I was born in the heart of Lagos surulere n there is nothing you will tell me about Lagos main city or whatever you want to call it.
My family house is at jakande gate, ikotun road and the place is every bit part of Lagos city as any other place. My friends still live in lere n I can tell you the days of lere or those areas you mentioned are gone.
Where I live we have good roads , well ventilated houses with trees , enough parking spaces, wide streets, street lights, 22 hrs per day electricity, good water, and the best restaurants , clubs , bars n highly civilized, educated n wealthy ppl .The only negative is the traffic n that can even be maneuvered if you know how to.
Proximity to your place of work isn’t the only factor a house seeker should look out for, most of my colleagues that stay in lere n environs are beginning to relocate cos they’ve come to realize the crazy fees they pay as rent isn’t worth it. You see someone living in a self contain apartment, that can even be termed “a face me I face you “, paying 800k to 1m.
If that is not wastage I wonder what it is.
Truth of the matter is , no place in Lagos is too far as there are developments going on in every area of the state n the government has been trying its best to make transportation easy for lagosians.
Using all your earnings for rent in Lagos cos of proximity is the most stupid thing anyone should do.

You have a point.

But do you know that there are times whereby there will be exceptional days that traffic will be he!! and it will be so frustrating and draining.

There was a period that I was leaving work from the island to Ebute-metta and I spent over 1 hour because of traffic.(on a normal day it should be 10-15 mins) Please imagine those that are still going to far places like mowe, sagamu, Ibafo, ikorodu, ogijo, odoguyan etc.
If you live far from your workplace it has merit and demerits. One of the demerits is that it will expose one's to additional transportation cost, health challenges, not having adequate sleep etc. Demerits outweighs the merit.

Money saved by living in a cheap apartment and far from workplace will one way or the other will be spent indirectly and unconsciously on unforseen expenses.
Jobs/Vacancies / Re: How To Those Shuttling Ikorodu To Mainland Cope? by anthropizzy(m): 6:24pm On Feb 27
VanuatuWycombe:

You will see your choice. First of all you need to be informed and up-to-date. Being informed about what you want would make you pay less for the rent.
Categorize the area you are looking for into 3 and go for the middle one of that’s what your housing allowance can cover.
The employer that calculated the housing allowance that can get you a house for a place like Palmgroove, eg, doesn’t expect you to be living in Ikorodu. The employer is not cra.zy. It is we the employees that think we are smart.
Why do you think some employees are agile, up and doing, smart and being productive at work than some employees?
Good accommodation that is closer to work and with some amenities are responsible.
They get promoted than some.

If you live in Ikorodu, once’s it’s 4pm, you would be thinking of how to even, first of all, get closed to Agric and be thanking God.

If you are not lucky and go and get house around Ogijo and other far areas of Ikorodu, you are in for it.
I guarantee you that your health and finances would suffer for what you think you are saving.
You will run generator like maaad, think of how to buy fuel, repair it. How to get up early.

Where I live and still maintain the rent since 2015, I have never bought any generator in my live and it’s not that there’s 24/7 electricity there or that I pay anything exorbitantly.

If you don’t have good sleep in a day, the effect on your brain is like that of someone who took 2 bottles of alcoholic beer and is suffering from hangover. You may ask any doctor about this.

Consider not sleeping well for weeks and months and years because you get home late and wake up early to go work. Your immune system starts dropping and some vital cells start dying in your brain.

Sha be doing brain scan every year to see how vital neurons in your brain are shrinking.

Don’t listen to anybody who says you should go to Ikorodu o. They don’t like you. They are po0r and don’t value their health.
If it is only a room with a small mattress you can afford for now in a closer location to your office, it is good. Don’t dream of furnishing any room for now. Ensure you have basic hygiene things and maintain your office clothes and shoes. You don’t need tv sef in that room. You can watch and stream on your phone.
Any lady who doesn’t like your room like that should go to he!!
If you are not in a right frame of mind, you can’t perform well on any task given to you and you won’t get promoted. Don’t say na one mama or family member dey do you o.
You have to be happy and sound to give any task your best.

Hallo Dear nairalanders

I really love your breakdown analysis that support proximity to your workplace is very vital and helps you alot to be productive at work.

I have senior colleagues that are living at ikorodu, mowe etc but because of the traffic problem they had to get a small apartment on the mainland close to the island.

You have a strong point and I support it.
