A foundation member of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in Eket Senatorial District of Akwa Ibom State, Chief Etang Umoyo, has dumped the party for the All progressives Congress, APC.

Umoyo, a Third Republic senator, who was in the forefront of the campaign for Eket Senatorial District to produce a governor in 2015, claimed that the state was moving backwards under the PDP-led administration.

Recall that a serving senator, Chief Nelson Effiong, also from the Senatorial District, defected to the ruling APC on the floor of the Senate two months ago, citing irreconcilable differences with the state government.


Umoyo, who is considered as one of the most senior politicians in Esit Eket Local Government Area, has already registered with the APC in his Etebi Ward 7.

He told reporters that the seed of disintegration of the PDP in the state was sowed during the December 2014 governorship primaries of the party.

According to him, “Today is just for me to officially present myself to my Ward as a member of APC, but, I had long abandoned a group of mafians who called themselves politicians in PDP, immediately after the gubernatorial primaries in 2014, which saw to the imposition of a particular candidate against the wishes of the people.


“Today, the state is moving backwards because of that singular act of impunity.”

He described the primaries as a show of shame and impunity of the highest order masterminded by a former governor; and said he decided to join, “a national crusade against injustice, impunity, primitive stealing of public funds and the stifling of democratic principles across the country by a party I co-founded and laboured to build.”

He alleged Eket has becoming “a forsaken zone in terms of infrastructural development and key appointments.”

A former member of the House of Representatives, Bassey Dan-Abia Jnr, also described Umoyo as a light-bearer in the state, adding that his official defection to the APC, marks the death of the PDP in Esit Eket.

The troubled Southern part of Kaduna State is again fizzing with tension arising from Saturday's killing of two herdsmen, allegedly by indigenes. Some young herdsmen were said to have brought their livestock out to graze in an area called Ungwan Yashi, near Kafanchan, when they were attacked. Some of them were said to have escaped.

A military officer told SaharaReporters that the Kaduna State Police Command has confirmed the killing, while efforts are being made to retrieve their corpses from a river.

As at the time of filing this report, armed security operatives are patrolling Ungwan Yashi to forestall a reprisal.

Assistant National Secretary of Miyetti Allah, the umbrella body of cattle rearers, Dr. Ibrahim Abdullahi, gave the names of those killed as Anas Shuaibu and Yahaya Musa

"We have been informed that two Fulani youths, Anas Shuaibu (20) and Yahaya Musa (14) were killed on Saturday 11/03/2017 while grazing their cattle at Unguwan Maiyashi, Fantsuwam Chiefdom, Jemaa Local Government Area.

"Their corpses have been traced to a river by the security agencies, but it was too dark, and they had to postpone the search until Sunday. We have also been informed that another corpse of a Fulani man has been found in Madakiya in Zangon Kataf Local Government Area," said Dr. Abdullahi.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Adamawa State chapter has promised free education for all Nigerians when it returns to power in 2019.

Chairman of the party in Adamawa State, Abdulrahman Bobboi while speaking with newsmen recently, lamented the havoc the APC-led government had done to Nigeria sine it assumed power in May, 2015.

He recalled that before the APC government led by President Muhammadu Buhari assumed office in 2015, a bag of rice was sold for N8,000 but now it had skyrocketed to N22,000.

He also recalled how a litre of fuel was sold for N87 but today, the story had changed as the product was now sold for N145 per litre.

On what to expect if the party returned to power in 2019, the PDP chieftain said, “By the time PDP takes over in 2019, we will declare free education for all the time PDP takes over in 2019 we will declare free education for all.

“Illiteracy is a major problem to any society and this government has made it difficult for Nigerians to have three square meals talk more of paying school fees.

“We are working with our economic team to develop models to jack up the revenue profile of the state when we take over.”

When asked about his party’s achivment after 16 years in power, Bobboi said, “During our time, we built about 12 universities in northern Nigeria; the Almajiri schools were built all over the country, all these were done to eradicate ignorance.

“It was a PDP government that established Adamawa State University, and during that time, the people of Adamawa enjoyed free education.”
