Türkiye has rejected a proposal by Washington that an S-400 anti-missile defence system which Türkiye bought from Russia be sent to Ukraine.

Details: Çavuşoğlu said the US had argued that the S-400 system purchased from Russia should exclude Türkiye from the F-35 fighter jet program, and suggested that Türkiye hand control of the system over to the US or another country, such as Ukraine, as it tries to fight off Russian forces.

Çavuşoğlu said these proposals were unacceptable because they were intended to encroach on Turkish sovereignty.

Quote: "The US asked us to send the S-400s to Ukraine, and we said no."

More details: According to Anadolu, in 2017, when its protracted efforts to buy an air defence system from the US proved futile, Türkiye signed a contract with Russia to acquire the state-of-art S-400 system.

US officials expressed opposition to its deployment, arguing that S-400s would be incompatible with NATO systems. But Türkiye stated that the S-400s would not be integrated into NATO systems and would pose no threat to the Alliance or its armaments.

Asked about returning to the F-35 programme, Çavuşoğlu said Ankara does not want to return to the programme but rather wants Washington to pay back the money that Türkiye paid for fighter jets before it was removed from the programme, while its jets were never delivered.

Ankara is now "producing its own national combat aircraft", he explained, adding that Türkiye also wants to improve ties with the US and that the necessary mechanisms have been established to that end.

But Türkiye also wants to buy F-16 jets and upgrade kits from the US, he added, mentioning that the request is not progressing in Washington as fast as he believes it should.

Ankara requested F-16s and upgrade kits from the US in October 2021. The US$6 billion deal was to include 40 jets and upgrade kits for 79 warplanes that the Turkish Air Force already has in its inventory.

The US has high confidence in the accuracy of Ukraine’s claim that it used an American-made Patriot air defense system to intercept a Russian hypersonic missile, according to a source familiar with the matter.

While the Patriot system has been successful in countering ballistic missiles, its ability to stop air-launched hypersonic missiles was purely theoretical before last week. Ukraine’s intercept has now provided a real-world demonstration of that capability — something that has been viewed within the Pentagon as a major development, the source said.

Ukraine’s intercept claim created buzz within the Pentagon late last week, the source added, noting it is significant for several reasons.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has publicly touted the capabilities of Russia’s hypersonic weapons and cast them as capable of overcoming all existing air defense systems.

Production of hypersonic ballistic missiles has always been challenging for Russia and sanctions have only made it more difficult.

U.S wants to use Ukraine to boost the market of the patriot that's the reason you are seeing all these lies. Patriot was not built to defend against hypersonic threat so that's impossible. If this was a new air defence system built to challenge hypersonic missile I would have believed though some people might say the patriot has been upgraded which I don't want to believe cause U.S itself is still finding it difficult to field hypersonic missiles so defending against it sef is another stress for them. The technology is somewhat difficult for the US.

Details: HIMARS medium-range missile systems were recognised as game-changers and played a vital role in the war, but now they have become less effective due to the occupiers’ actions.

CNN sources state that this is forcing a search for ways to tweak the HIMARS software to counter Russia's growing jamming efforts.

"It is a constant cat-and-mouse game of finding a countermeasure to the jamming only to then have the Russians counteract that countermeasure. And it is not clear how sustainable that game is in the long term," said an anonymous Pentagon official.

Given the anticipated counteroffensive, solutions that will help Ukrainian troops make significant advances become even more of a priority.

"It's one thing to be able to hold the Russians off where they are right now. It’s another thing to drive them out," said retired US Army Brigadier General Steve Anderson.

Nigeria is back to UN missions in South Sudan and Guinea Bissau.

In my opinion, this is not a good thing, UN missions of old made the Nigerian army weak and unprepared to face real threats.

While we can contribute a few soldiers to these missions we need to concentrate on the real threats that face Nigeria.

With Boko Haram and ISWAP technically defeated in Nigeria, the military seems to think they have the time to run around in these mickey mouse UN missions.

We really need to consider the suitability of these missions to our army.
