Properties / 5 Best Tips For Decorating A Home Office by Antiquesdecor(m): 3:10pm On Sep 26, 2018
Stay organized
It’s no secret. Home offices can get messy – fast. To keep the piles at bay, it’s tempting to stock up on organizational bins, drawers, etc. There are about a million great options on the market to help you keep your home office in top shape. The only problem is that it’s all too easy to bring a bunch of them home without actually implementing them.

Elevate your thinking
Even the smallest home office can be fully stocked with great decor and organization solutions. The trick is to think up. Maximize your vertical square footage by hanging art you love, adding floating shelves or installing cabinets up the wall. The height of your wall is an asset when decorating a home office.

Don’t be afraid to get playful with what you hang. Open cabinets could be equal parts practical and fun. Fill them with useful bins alongside colorful books or meaningful tchotchkes. Never forget that your home office is just that – yours. You can use the entire height of the wall as your canvas for whatever will inspire you and drive your productivity.

Cut cord clutter
In our digital age, one of the absolute worst things about offices is all of the tech clutter that accumulates. You probably need your computer and printer, but that doesn’t mean you need to stare at their tangle of cables all day. Take some steps to keep your home office free of cord clutter. Cut a hole in the back of an attractive box. Your router and other necessary tech can live in there with cords fed out the back. Mount a power strip underneath or on the back of your desk.

Use cable ties and command hooks to wrangle any cords that get plugged into that power strip and feed them along the back of furniture where they’re out of sight. You’ll be amazed at the way simply removing the eyesore of cords will make your office feel clean and bright.

Let there be light
Offices are notorious for their stark lighting — specifically, fluorescents. Why do offices often opt for sterile, cold lighting that makes you feel like you’re under a microscope? Because they know one basic work principle: Sufficient lighting makes work easier. We already strain our eyes staring at screens most of the day.

Don’t make it worse by limiting lighting in your home office. Use natural light as much as possible, but make sure you supplement where it falls short. A well-lit office is a happy, productive one.

Make yourself at home
Your office is an extension of your house or apartment. It should look and feel like one. Decorate with the same themes you’ve used in your house and incorporate items you love. Nothing is off limits. If you’re a plant lover, blanket your home office in green. If hygge is your vibe, add a plush rug and a cozy throw to your office chair. Don’t limit yourself just because this is a workspace.

You’ll be more productive in a room that brings you joy, so why not put some extra care into creating an office that feels like home?

Start decorating a home office
Do you want to know the best way to decorate your office? By starting. It’s really that simple. You’ll intuitively know the essentials: a desk, a chair, a lamp.

From there, enjoy the process of finding pieces you love that inspire your best work. Decorating a home office can take time. But you have your whole life to work, so it’s worth the effort!

What are some ways you’ve integrated your office into your home? Do you have any other clever tricks you’d like to share?

Nairaland / General / Ideas To Make The Most Of Your Space by Antiquesdecor(m): 3:51pm On Sep 25, 2018
Ideas to Make the Most of Your Space

It’s interesting to try new things. Sometimes traditional ideas about living room decor aren’t the best solution for a small space. Instead of using blinds for window treatments, use long, flowing drapes because they draw attention to vertical space, thus expanding the area of the room.

Your living room, regardless of size, should be able to function as a space for relaxation and entertaining. Here are some of our favorite ways to make it feel more spacious.

Decorate with Mirrors

Designers often place mirrors strategically in small places in order to make them feel larger. One of the most common small living room ideas is to hang a large mirror in a central location to create a focal point. To reflect light and add a nice ambiance, put it behind a light source such as a candle or pendant lamp. If possible, position a mirror across from your window so it will reflect the view and give the illusion of another window.

Draw the Eye Upward

A room has a vertical dimension as well as a horizontal one. If your living room has a high ceiling, make the most of the extra space by decorating it in a manner that draws the eye upward. Floor-to-ceiling drapes are a stylish way to accomplish this goal.

Another idea is to fill the vertical space with a menagerie of small to midsize artwork. This technique will make the room feel larger than it actually is, because it invites the eye to roam beyond the eye-level horizontal space that may feel confined.

Use Neutral Colors for a Small Living Room

One of the most popular small living room ideas is the use of neutral colors on walls, floor, ceiling and furniture upholstery. A palette of off-whites or beiges will expand the space by appearing to push back the walls. Soft hues also tend to illuminate a room by reflecting light. In addition to enlarging an area, a neutral palette imparts instant sophistication and creates a calming environment.

Choose Furniture with a Lightweight Appearance

When you shop for furniture, consider its visual weight. This concept refers to the perceived heaviness of an object based on size, color and design. Pick out pieces that have a lightweight appearance, as heavier ones will seem to constrict a space.

Opt for pale colors over darker ones, and select pieces that have legs while avoiding those that are boxy. Glass coffee or end tables will take up less visual space than wooden ones because you can see through them. Any furnishings that don’t obstruct views will make an area seem more open.

Select Small-Scale Furniture
A list of small living room ideas would not be complete without the recommendation to select furniture that won’t overpower the room or appear to dominate the space. A sofa with thin arms and a tightly upholstered back is preferable to one with substantial arms and a multi-cushion back.

If space is tight, you could do without a couch completely, either choosing a loveseat or opting to position four chairs around a coffee table. When picking out chairs, consider armless ones because they will take up less space than a model with arms.

Properties / How To Furnish Your Home For The First Time (without Breaking The Bank) by Antiquesdecor(m): 3:30pm On Sep 25, 2018
How to Furnish Your Home for the First Time (Without Breaking the Bank)

Assess your current inventory
As much as we would all like to furnish our new home with brand new, Pinterest-board-ready furniture, for most of us, that’s not a realistic option. While some fresh pieces will probably be necessary, you won’t be able to get a true sense of what’s needed without taking stock of your existing inventory, especially if you’re combining households with your significant other for the first time.

To do this, sit down and take a long, hard look at everything you own. Start with staple pieces of furniture and then move on to smaller items like textiles and accessories. Evaluate each item based on its usefulness, condition and whether or not it fits your sense of personal style. Make a list and separate the pieces into one of three categories: Keep, Unsure and Donate/Discard.

Rank purchases by priority
Since buying a home is such a big expense, people usually have a limited budget for furnishings once they move in. This, coupled with the excitement of designing their own spaces for the first time, can lead to some costly mistakes. Either the new homeowners will go into debt giving the home a top-to-bottom makeover or they blow the entire budget making one room perfect down to the last detail and have no money left for other essentials.

That doesn’t need to be the case. Here’s the secret interior designers don’t want you to know: It’s absolutely fine to furnish a home piece by piece, rather than going one room at a time. While you’ll probably want to ensure you have a few essential items — a bed, a dresser, a sofa and a dining table — available at move in, the rest can be bought over time.

Source pricey items secondhand
Keep in mind there are plenty of ways to furnish your home without heading to pricey, high-end stores. If new furniture won’t fit in your budget for the foreseeable future, it’s time to get creative. Fortunately, there are plenty of ways to find affordable pieces secondhand. All you need is a keen eye.

Search out thrift shops and consignment stores in your area and visit them regularly to get a sense of their changing inventory. Check Craigslist and other for-sale sites. Pay attention to postings for local yard sales and flea markets. It may also be a good idea to let friends and family know you’re in need. You never know who may be willing to offer up some hand-me-downs.

Be sure to give any secondhand items a firm appraisal before agreeing to take them home. Make sure they have all their necessary parts, are structurally sound and fairly clean. Do your best to source items that are in line with your personal style, but keep in mind they don’t need to be an exact match.

DIY cohesive looks
If you’re willing to put in a little extra effort, it’s possible to make individual pieces of furniture look like they’re part of a matching set. Where furniture is concerned, most of the time all that’s needed is the right DIY tutorial and a few coats of paint.

To pull this off, your first step is to find some design inspiration. Search through a few interior design sites like Freshome until you find a few photos that showcase an aesthetic you love. Then, look for a video or step-by-step tutorial that clearly outlines the process.

Furnish first home
Figuring out how to furnish your home for the very first time can be overwhelming. All of a sudden you find yourself with a lot more space and nothing to fill it with. Keep these tips in mind before you jump in and redo your home from top to bottom. With our help, you’ll be able to tackle your new home’s interior design in a way that makes sense.

Do you have any tips to share about furnishing a first home? Any questions you need answered about the process? Tell us in the comments!

Nairaland / General / 4 Steps On How To Organize Your Kitchen Cabinet Drawers by Antiquesdecor(m): 10:43am On Sep 12, 2018
Not all kitchen items and tools are created equal. There are items that you use often or every day and those you rarely use or even remove from your kitchen cabinet drawers in the first place. Yet, most of us let our kitchen cabinet drawers become a mix of any and all items, regardless of how important they are or how often we need them.

1. Think about how you use your kitchen
Before jumping into the task of organizing kitchen cabinet drawers, start by recalling the functions of your kitchen. That way, you’ll know how to organize your drawers and cabinets. For this first step, think of how you used your kitchen over the last week to determine its functions.

Keep these functions in mind as you work toward organizing your kitchen cabinet drawers..

2. Declutter kitchen cabinet drawers
Once you’ve determined the many functions of your kitchen and what you do and use the most in your kitchen, the next step is to declutter. Decluttering means removing excess things from your kitchen cabinets and drawers that you don’t use, so there is room left for what you want to store and be able to access easily.

The main goal for a kitchen drawer should be for it to open and close smoothly, instead of the drawer getting caught on excess items crammed into it. You should be able to grab what you need from your drawers and kitchen cabinets and cupboards easily and quickly.

Nairaland / General / 5 Conventional Types Of TV Wall Designs by Antiquesdecor(m): 2:21pm On Sep 10, 2018
TV Wall provide the perfect perch for your and usually provide some storage space for other components; they should accent the rest of your decor adding a little style to your home. They are made from different materials, pick the one that complements the other furniture in your home properly.

1. Entertainment Centre

Entertainment centres are usually massive in size making a statement as the centrepiece of the room. Their construction is richly detailed as they do more than housing a TV, they have space for any other entertainment component such as art pieces, books, DVDs, CDs and much more; making it the focal point of the room. They can really set a living room off and often contain shelving or closed cabinetry.

2. TV wall mounts

Wall mounts take up no space, they allow for comfortable viewing of the screen as it would be placed at a suitable eye level and create the feel of a movie theatre at home. Holes are usually drilled into the walls for the TV screen to be mounted; TV wall mounts are of different types such s low-profile wall mount, tilting wall mount and full motion wall mounts.

Nairaland / General / The Different Types Of Furniture Your Office Needs by Antiquesdecor(m): 2:03pm On Sep 03, 2018
The Different Types Of Furniture Your Office Needs

As much as you can, you want to make sure that the office furniture that you have has a uniform design and quality.

This may be seen as a standardization of the office furniture. All offices require different types of furniture. Usually, these different types of furniture include desks, cabinets, chairs, tables, as well as other accessories that you may want to use.

Here are the types of furniture that are essential for your office:

1 - Office desks

Most of the office work tends to be performed on these desks. The main goal of an office desk is to provide a good surface either for examining, checking and writing.

Desks should also be a place where you can have some space for your supplies, files, papers, and stationary that you need to use. The truth is that the performance of an employee is directly related to the kind of desk they are using. So, when you're selecting a good office desk, you need to consider its cost, easy moving, good appearance and how easy would be to keep the desk clean.

When you're looking for an office desk, you'll be able to find different kinds of desks. The ones that you'll frequently find include executive desks, clerical desks, secretarial desks, typing desks, and other special desks.

2 - Office table

Most offices include at least one or two office tables. You know that this is an office table because this kind of tables usually includes one or two drawers. These are usually used only for storing documents, for writing important documents, to handle some temporary files and they're also used to trace some files.

3 - Chairs

Chairs are one of the most important items that you need in your office. After all, your employees will spend most of their time sitting on these chairs.

So, as you can see, this will not only affect their performance at work as it will affect their health as well. This is why when you're buying an office chair, you need to make sure that it is a comfortable chair.

So, make sure that the chairs that you get to your office include an adjustable-height, an adjustable back rest, and the shape of the seat should be comfortable.

4 - Cabinets

Cabinets are usually used for filing files, folders, books, papers, among others.

Usually, these cabinets are made of steel and they are traditionally used because they are not only safe as they are very durable.

Nairaland / General / How To Plan Ahead For A Successful Office Renovation by Antiquesdecor(m): 11:03am On Aug 28, 2018
Smart planning in the early stages increases your chances for a successful office renovation. follow these steps to help your renovation process.

1. Identify Goals

To solidify specific project goals, answer certain questions and address areas of concern upfront. These include:

What factors are driving the renovation (e.g. updating infrastructure systems, installing new technology, upgrading finishes, new tenants, changes to the function of the space, a desire to enhance aesthetics)?

What issues will affect the schedule of the project? Will work take place while the building is occupied, or will it involve phased moves?

What is the budget for the project? Does it include all available funds; has any money been left for contingencies?

2.Put Together an Effective Team

One of the most crucial elements in a seamless renovation is having the right project team for the job. Establishing a team early, with all the required disciplines, builds a strong group that will work well together and develop a sense of ownership toward the project.

The first step is to find the right architectural and/or interior design team. If an established relationship with a design team is already in place, the project is one step ahead. If not, it’s important to do some upfront research by soliciting proposals and conducting interviews to narrow down the list of prospects.

Nairaland / General / Signs That Your Office Needs Renovation by Antiquesdecor(m): 10:55am On Aug 28, 2018
So, When Does an Office Need a Renovation?
A timely office renovation is a great shot in the arm for any company, large or small. It can rejuvenate and reinvent not just the physical space, but also the morale and confidence of the employees who will enjoy and appreciate its benefits.

Here are a few hints that it is definitely time for a change:

When a fresh coat of paint isn’t enough. Whatever kind of service an office may deliver, the aura and atmosphere should depict the personality of the business and the people running it. If the walls resemble a dingy, déjà vu paneling nightmare from the 70s, then it is probably time to revitalize with a more contemporary look and modern materials. Make it fit and reflect the function and style of your business.

Properties / 3 Reasons Why You Should Hire An Interior Designer by Antiquesdecor(m): 10:35am On Aug 14, 2018
3 REASONS WHY YOU SHOULD HIRE AN INTERIOR DESIGNER

A professional interior designer will allow your personality to shine while taking your lifestyle, space, and budget in consideration. It is important to hire a designer that you will enjoy working with. A great designer achieves more than a beautiful space, they change the way you live in your home.

Most of us see interior design as exclusively for the rich and famous or well-to-do. It may surprise you to find out there are some genuinely great reasons why you should hire an interior designer – here’s three.

Save costs.

While the cost of hiring a designer may seem like a lot up front, changing a room which doesn’t turn out how you imagine will be a lot more expensive. Good interior designers guide you through your entire project so you know exactly what the end result will look like. This way there’s no nasty surprises when your home is finally finished.

Add value.

An interior designer can add the wow factor to your home, which is a big deal when it comes to selling. A well presented, consistent design will set your home apart from the competition. The little extra pizzazz will only give buyers more reason to love your home, meaning more chance they’ll be willing to pay what you want for your property.

Open possibilities.

If you want to expand your design horizons and be pushed outside your comfort zone, start looking for an interior designer. Interior designers have ideas and solutions you may never think of. You’ll discover new colours, patterns and pieces of furniture you wouldn’t normally give a second glance. And guess what? You’ll love all of it!
Widen connections.

Properties / 5 Tips For Keeping A Clean Bathroom by Antiquesdecor(m): 11:18am On Aug 13, 2018
5 TIPS FOR KEEPING A CLEAN BATHROOM
It’s probably everyone’s least favorite room in the house to clean, but it also needs it the most! Stop stressing about having a tidy bathroom by following these tips. They don’t take much time and your bathroom will never have a chance to get filthy!

Choose one day a week to give the bathroom a deep clean. Put on your gloves and pull out the cleaning solvents to make your shower, tub and toilet sparkle.

Once a week when you’re doing laundry, pull all of your bathroom linens (i.e. hand towels, rugs) and get them clean.
Every morning take a couple minutes to wipe down the sink and faucet. Add it to your morning routine after you’ve brushed your teeth and it will keep your sink free from soap scum and toothpaste!

Bathroom trash can be forgotten, especially if it’s hidden under a vanity. Don’t let yours overflow. Use a plastic grocery bag to line your trash can and pull the whole bag out and add it to your kitchen trash before you bring it outside.

Sometimes we tend to forget about the floors in the bathroom too. Once a week (maybe when you’re doing laundry), pull out your swiffer or mop and wash your bathroom floors. That way you can lay bathroom rugs back onto a clean floor after they’ve been washed.
Nairaland / General / 6 Ways To Clean And Maintain Your Bathroom by Antiquesdecor(m): 11:07am On Aug 13, 2018
6 Ways to Clean and Maintain Your Bathroom

Your bathroom is quite possibly the one room you will (or should) spend the most time keeping up. Despite the fact that you and your family spend a relatively small amount of time using the bathroom (as compared to the other rooms in your home), it’s certainly one of the prime targets for mold, grime, and other bacteria within a household. Because of this, it’s important to maintain the cleanliness of your bathroom. And this goes way beyond simply keeping it “tidy.”

Separate Wet Materials
You probably know that mold thrives in areas of stagnant moisture. You’re also surely aware that most everything done in a bathroom requires the use of water. So it’s up to you to make sure that your shower curtains and towels stay as dry as possible when not in use. When you’re done showering, spready the curtain wide and allow it to dry properly. Don’t bunch wet towels up in the corner, or lay them on top of each other. Don’t overlook your bathmat, either; drape it over a drying rack or rod after every use.

Declutter
Your bathroom is likely full of cleansing products, deodorants, soaps, and gels – and other items which may or may not belong in the bathroom in the first place. Do you really need five different shampoos and three different bottles of body wash? Chances are you haven’t touched many of the products in your shower or cabinet in months. Chuck out anything you don’t use on a semi-daily basis. It’ll be much easier to do the deep cleaning when your bathroom is organized.

Open Windows
I’m sure you know at least one reason why you should do this. But in all seriousness, this goes back to the first point about moisture being a trap for mold. The more air that’s circulated throughout the bathroom, the dryer the entire area will be. Consider also using a fan to keep the air circulating, especially on those hazy days of summer. Just because it’s hot out doesn’t mean moisture in your bathroom will evaporate on its own.

Avoid Oil Stains or Rings
Unless you happen to know a certain hat-wearing cat, getting rings out of your bathtub isn’t exactly fun to do. Avoid them by rinsing the tub with clean, warm water immediately after taking a bath in which you used oils or salts. If the stain has already had time to set, scrub the tub with an abrasive cleaner such as Ajax. But it’s best to be proactive and make sure your tub stays spotless from the get-go.

Clean Grout
The little crevices in between your shower tiles can capture tiny drops of water, and – you guessed it – lead to mold and mildew growth. A mix of water and bleach scrubbed over the grout between the tiles will clear out most bacteria lurking beneath the surface. Just make sure to remove the bleach with warm water and a pH-neutral cleaner when you’re done, or you risk burning your skin or eyes the next time you hit the shower.

Use Homemade Cleaners
As I just mentioned, many cleaners will leave behind some toxic remnants if not dealt with correctly. Because of this, it’s best to use homemade cleaning mixtures whenever possible. Anyone who’s gone through 4th grade science class knows what baking soda and vinegar do when combined. But this mixture can be used to clean out pipes, shower heads, and faucets. Vinegar can also be used for a variety of cleaning purposes throughout your bathroom. Not only is using homemade cleaning remedies safer for your family and the environment, but it’s also much easier on your wallet!

Properties / Important Things To Consider When You’re Buying Curtains by Antiquesdecor(m): 10:57am On Aug 06, 2018
IMPORTANT THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN YOU’RE BUYING CURTAINS

COLOR AND FABRIC

Fabric is an essential part of choosing curtains, since the material will dictate how well your curtains function and hold up over time.

“If they’re too heavy, they may not fold crisply when drawn; too light and they may not fall well”.

Holding fabrics up to a window, even in a fabric showroom. “Pleat it like an accordion at the top and let it drape,” she says. “If it starts to flare like a piece of crinoline, then it’s not going to fall nicely on the window.”

Work with a big sample, at least 2 yards, since a smaller piece may not show the fabric’s true drape.

Also, remember sunlight will fade fabrics over time. If the room in question gets a lot of light, it’s smart to avoid bright colors, since they tend to fade faster.

Some fabrics can help keep out the cold. Many hotels use suede, velvet, tapestry or tweed since their weight helps block light and keep heat in. Still, nearly any fabric can be interlined with bump, a thick, insulating felt material. And interlining — a piece of fabric slipped between the lining and the face fabric — can also help prolong the life of the curtains.

LENGTH AND LINING

Before you take out the tape measure, decide how high above the window you’d like the curtains to begin. “Hanging panels higher than the window will give a sense of height to the room.

Measure from the top of the window (plus the added inches of height where the curtains will hang from) to the floor. For a more traditional look, with the curtain slightly puddled on the floor, you’ll want to add another two or three inches to your length.

When measuring the width of your window, be sure to add four to eight inches on both sides and double the total number to ensure curtain fullness. “Then you won’t block a lot of window glass when the curtains are open, and they won’t get in the way.

Nairaland / General / 4 Easy Steps To Maintain The Wallpapers In Your Home by Antiquesdecor(m): 10:16am On Jul 23, 2018
Most of the wallpapers are washable. You can wash it periodically with plain water and a napkin. Do not forget to take a look at the instruction manual for cleaning instructions.
Some wallpapers come with texture and design. If you find that the design is dusty, simply run your vacuum brush over it to clean it. Alternatively, you can use a dry cloth and dust it. For cobwebs, remove them gently from the surface and vacuum.
Ensure that you keep food away from the wallpaper to prevent staining.
To avoid any kind of damage to the wallpaper, do not use too much water on it while cleaning. Also, stay away from using scrubbers.

Properties / The Concepts Of Design by Antiquesdecor(m): 10:53am On Jul 18, 2018
The concepts of design BALANCE – stability in layout is much like balance in physics. A massive shape close to the center may be balanced with the aid of a small form close to the edge. Balance presents balance and structure to a design. It’s the load disbursed in the design by the position of your factors. PROXIMITY – Proximity creates courting among factors. It presents a focal point. Proximity doesn’t imply that factors have to be located collectively, it means they need to be visually linked together in by some ways. ALIGNMENT – permits us to create order and organisation. Aligning factors allows them to create a visible reference to each other. REPETITION – Repetition strengthens a design by means of tying collectively character elements. It allows to create association and consistency. Repetition can create rhythm (a sense of prepared motion). CONTRAST– evaluation is the juxtaposition of opposing factors (opposite […]
