The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has called for constitutional amendments to establish Sharia courts in all South-West states and to declare Fridays as public holidays across Nigeria in recognition of Muslim worship practices.

Presenting the proposal at the South-West Zonal Public Hearing on the review of the 1999 Constitution, the group’s Founder and Executive Director, Prof. Ishaq Akintola, argued that the changes would enhance inclusiveness and safeguard the rights of Muslims in the region.

Akintola was represented by Dr Jamiu Busari, a leader within the group, who addressed the Senate Committee on the Review of the Constitution.

“No Sharia court currently exists in Southwestern Nigeria, where Muslims arguably form the majority. This contradicts the pre-colonial Yoruba experience before the advent of British rule,” Akintola said.

He urged the Senate to recommend the establishment of Sharia courts in all South-West states, including Edo State, due to their substantial Muslim populations. Akintola also called for constitutional provisions to mandate state governors to establish Sharia Courts of Appeal.

“These courts will handle Muslim matters only, ensuring non-Muslims are not affected,” he added.

MURIC also demanded that Fridays be officially recognized as public holidays, citing religious practices and historical precedent.

Akintola noted that Thursdays and Fridays were the traditional weekend days for Muslims before the colonial era, contrasting the current system which observes Saturday and Sunday — both seen as favouring Christians.

“Currently, Nigeria recognizes Saturday and Sunday as weekends, both favouring Christians,” he said, adding that the current arrangement excludes Muslims and lacks religious fairness.

He claimed that the weekend structure was imposed by colonial authorities, with Saturday initially a half-day.

“Saturday was later made a full day to benefit Seventh-Day Adventists under Gen. Yakubu Gowon’s regime.”

Akintola further pointed out that of the eight religion-related national public holidays currently recognized in Nigeria, five are Christian holidays while only three cater to Muslims. The listed holidays include Christmas, Boxing Day, New Year, Good Friday, Easter Monday, Eid-Kabir, Eid Fitr, and Maulud.

To balance this, he urged the National Assembly to add the Islamic New Year to the list of national holidays, noting that it is already recognized in some states and should be adopted nationally.

The group also called for official recognition of Islamic marriage certificates, criticizing the existing framework that recognizes only Christian marriages conducted in churches or registries.

“Christian marriages conducted in churches or registries are officially accepted nationwide. But Nikkah marriages are not recognised, creating problems for Muslim couples in formal settings,” Akintola said.

Describing the situation as discriminatory, he insisted that Islamic marriages should be granted the same legal status as Christian marriages in official documentation.

In response, the Deputy Senate President, Sen. Jubrin Barau, assured that all demands presented would be given due consideration.

Represented by the Senate Leader, Sen. Opeyemi Bamidele, at the Lagos public hearing, Barau said the Senate would review all submissions and report its findings to the National Assembly.

Coalition politics is built on negotiation. That's why Tinubu insisted that it was his turn, because there was an agreement. Coalitions form because parties, interest groups, and power brokers come together to pool resources, structures, and votes. These negotiations inevitably involve politicians deciding among themselves who is best placed to carry their shared banner. That is how coalitions work globally, whether you like it or not.

The presidential aide said that it would be unthinkable that some groups under the so called coalition movement, united by hate and "consigned to political wilderness, are calling for political change in Nigeria".

The Bola Tinubu presidency has claimed that in two years, its government under the All Progressives Congress (APC) has beaten the records of all previous governments, including 16 years of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in power.

The presidency on Saturday urged Nigerians "not to be fooled" by the coalition but to verify the facts and make their decisions ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The PDP had led Nigeia between 1999 and 2015, and lost power to the All Progressives Congress (APC) after the 2015 general elections.

According to Bayo Onanuga, the Special Adviser to the President on Communication and Strategy, in a statement posted on his X handle on Saturday, the administration's remarkable achievements are evident in key sectors, including energy.

The presidential aide said that it would be unthinkable that some groups under the so called coalition movement, united by hate and "consigned to political wilderness, are calling for political change in Nigeria".

Justifying his claims, Onanuga said that the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) reported a staggering revenue growth of ₦12.2 trillion in 2024, representing a 176.7% increase from ₦4.3 trillion in 2023.

This feat he maintained, demonstrates the Tinubu administration's commitment to progress and tangible results.

"The Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC), a regulatory agency in the energy sector, has reported remarkable progress under President Bola Tinubu, the leader whom the misguided, anti-progress elements in the so-called coalition of hate want to remove from office.

"According to the NUPRC report for 2024, revenue growth hit a record high that year. NUPRC Revenue (Trillion Naira): 2022: ₦3.7 T; 2023: ₦4.3 T; 2024: ₦12.2 T representing 176.7% increase in 2024."

Onanuga highlighted the successes of other agencies, such as the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) and the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), which have also posted record results in recent months.

"This success is not isolated. Agencies like the NNPC and the Nigeria Revenue Service have also posted record results in recent months. These achievements demonstrate that the Tinubu administration is making progress, as it is delivering tangible results in key sectors.

"It is unthinkable that some groups, united by hate and consigned to political wilderness, are calling for political change."

Onanuga urged Nigerians not to be swayed by opposition groups calling for political change.

"I urge Nigerians not to be fooled. Verify the facts and make informed decisions about the country’s future. The facts are clear: in two years, the Tinubu administration has beaten the records of all previous governments, including 16 years of PDP in power," Onanuga said.

The presidency's claim of record-breaking achievements will likely be subject to scrutiny and debate, with some arguing that the administration still faces significant challenges in addressing the country's economic and social issues

PoliticsEx-Army Chief Proposes Mandatory Military Training For Nigerians by Antoeni(op): 5:01pm On Jul 05, 2025
A former Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Azubuike Ihejirika (retd.), has called for the introduction of mandatory military training for all Nigerians, beginning with the National Youth Service Corps.

This, he said, is a way of promoting national unity, discipline, and resilience in the face of growing security and social challenges.

Ihejirika made the call on Friday night at the 50th anniversary of the Nigerian Defence Academy Regular Course 18 Alumni Association in Abuja.

He reflected on his early days in military service and the camaraderie built over the years with fellow officers.

The former Army chief said the discipline and patriotism instilled in them during training were instrumental in shaping their careers and national contributions.

“Given the current situation of things in our country, I believe it’s time we start thinking about mandatory military training for our citizens.

“We can start with the National Youth Service. This will help us build a generation of Nigerians who understand sacrifice, responsibility, and patriotism,” he said.

Ihejirika praised the government’s decision to restore the old national anthem, saying it reinforces the spirit of unity.

He emphasised that the line “Though tribe and tongue may differ, in brotherhood we stand” perfectly captures the essence of national service and shared identity.

He also expressed concern over how the national anthem is now reduced to mere fanfare at official events.

“It should be a daily reminder of our oath of allegiance. It must return to schools, communities, and national ceremonies,” he said.

Drawing from his own life experience, Ihejirika recounted his humble beginnings from his village in Abia and how military discipline transformed him.

He credited the support of colleagues and mentors for his successful career, which culminated in his appointment as Nigeria’s 22nd Chief of Army Staff.

Beyond his advocacy, the retired general also commended the current leadership of the Nigerian Armed Forces, describing them as highly experienced and well-trained.

“Many of the officers leading today served in Liberia, Sierra Leone, and other conflict zones.

They have earned their stars through real battle experience and are doing remarkably well,” he added.

He urged Nigerian leaders at all levels to prioritise peace and stability, reminding them that no office or position is sustainable in the absence of national unity.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the dinner had in attendance the Minister of State for Defence, Chief of Defence Staff and representatives of service chiefs amongst other dignitaries.

The Goal of the 2027 Election is Different from that of 2023. While 2023 was about saving Nigeria's economy, 2027 is About saving Nigeria and our Democracy.

There is corruption, and there's existential threat. I'm not gonna insult anyone by attempting to whitewash any of the coalition participants; but like Peter Obi said, some alliances are unavoidable at some times.

RomanceRe: Should I Marry A 33-year-old Virgin Or A 23-year-old Non-virgin? by Antoeni(m): 3:49pm On Jul 05, 2025
Actually, a woman who gets married while she is a virgin, knows only one size of her man's manhood. Therefore, the size will not have any effect on her because she gets fitted to her man's pintle regardless of the size.

On the other hand, if a woman experienced different pintle sizes before getting married, when she gets married, the size of her man's manhood will have an impact on her.

Such a woman will begin to complain that her husband doesn't satisfy her in bed because she begins to compare her man's manhood strength, sizes, and weight with what she got outside from her ex fúckérs.

Remember, a child who has never been trained to eat outside, will always believe that her mother's food is the sweetest and the best. Such a child will never know that her mother's food is not sweet.

What a man owes a woman is love, care and to get her pregnant; because, the greatest joy of a woman in a marriage is when you give her a child, a family.
