The Federal Government is considering a proposal whereby pupils would be taught in their mother tongue in the first three years in primary schools. The Minister of Education, Malam Adamu Adamu, said this yesterday in Abuja at a launch of the World Development Report 2018 by the World Bank Group. The minister was answering a question on teaching pupils with native language to ease learning process. This year’s Development Report focused on Education, arguing that countries can improve on education by advancing on three key elements; assess learning, act on evidence and align actors. The Country Director, World Bank Group in Nigeria, Rachid Bennessaoud said countries must recognise that all the classroom innovations in the world is unlikely to have much impact if, because of technical and political barriers, the system as a whole does not support learning. He promised to partner Nigeria to improve on learning process in the country. |

In response to Mark Banschick's September Psychology Today post, "The Intelligent Divorce," there is no such thing. Divorce is bad, plain and simple. I am a psychologist with an excellent education and the daughter of a divorce. In school, I read everything I could get my hands on, academic and anecdotal. I talked to everyone I knew, young and old. I talked to people who stayed in unhappy marriages. I talked to people who had married multiple times. From scientific articles to Hemingway on divorce, no source was overlooked. If what is practiced in Ghana is practised everywhere, I am sure this so called Shame of Disgrace will reduce. Marriage is not only love but staying with each other for long. Some situations warrant quick separation, but the one u can forgive, please do.

The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA), has confirmed the death of one person in two cases of Lassa fever recorded in the territory. The Director of Public Health in Health and Human Services Secretariat, FCT, Dr Humphrey Okoroukwu, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the other victim has been treated and discharged from the hospital. He said two cases were recorded at Bwari Area Council of the FCT. Okoroukwu said, though, before the laboratory confirmation, they were placed on treatment but one of the victims could not make it. “Once we have any suspected case, we commence treatment immediately before the laboratory result comes out,” he said. The director urged residents of FCT not to panic over the development but rather take their personal and environmental hygiene seriously. Okoroukwu further urged residents to imbibe regular washing of hands, keep their environment clean and dispose their domestic waste to avoid invasion of rodents.

Cristiano Ronaldo has called out Lionel Messi wishing Barcelona meets Real Madrid in the Champions League last eight, Diario Gol reports. According to Diario Gol, the five-time Ballon d'Or winner told his team's WhatsApp group that he hopes to play an El Classico Champions League quarter finals. The Los Blancos has rediscovered his goalscoring form this calendar year after a nightmare start to the season. Ronaldo has bounced back with 10 goals since January 21. Part of the Portuguese goals includes a hat-trick against Real Sociedad in La Liga and a vital brace in the Champions League when Real hosted Paris Saint Germain. The current European Champions are in a great position to make it through when they travel to Paris for the second leg next month and has reportedly sent a message to his squad’s group text - calling out Messi. Lionel Messi on the other hand cancelled out Willian’s earlier goal to give Barcelona the advantage at Nou Camp.

This was made known to newsmen by a teacher in the school who pleaded anonymity. According to him, 94 students could not be accounted for following a roll call, but the school cannot establish if the missing girls were abducted or not. In his words, “After the roll call, 610 out the total number of 704 students have returned. We are still searching for the remaining 94 students. “We cannot say [if they have been abducted], because the insurgents went into the students hostel, and many of these students scaled the fence and escaped into the bushes. A French tourist has admitted impregnating more than 600 women in six African countries within two years. Forty-year old Jean Michel made the revelation on an online news site “Africa24”. Like he said, "I have a confession to make about the havoc I have wreaked in six African countries, including Cameroon, Togo, Cote D’Ivoire, Nigeria, Ghana and Guinea. I am not proud of what I have done. These were unfortunate experiences. “In France where I hail from, I did not have money. I was very poor until one day I played and won lottery. I won 550 thousand euros. I began having sex with girls every day. Sometimes, I would sleep with three girls at the same time. It was a marvelous experience. “I spent three months in Ivory Coast, spent 60, 000 euros and slept with more than 80 girls. “After leaving Ivory Coast, I went to Togo where I slept with over 100 girls and spent 40, 000 euros. “I spent three months in Togo and went to Nigeria. “Nigeria was where I got more girls. I did not speak English, and it seems Nigerian girls love foreigners. “I rented a furnished apartment in Nigeria and I was in Lagos for six months. I spent 100,000 euros and slept with 230 girls. Nigeria was the place I appreciated the most. Girls were always available and easy to deceive. “From Nigeria, I went to Ghana, and then Cameroon and ended what I describe as my sex tour in Guinea.

Nigeria’s former Minister of Finance, Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, has been appointed into a High-Level Group on Governance of the Commonwealth Secretariat. Prof. Ben Maloney, Communications Officer, Commonwealth Secretariat, said in a statement that the High-Level Group would make recommendations on governance of the Commonwealth Secretariat. The Commonwealth, however, denied that the group was constituted to secretly begin considering who might succeed the Queen as its head. “At their last Summit in Malta, Commonwealth heads of government directed the Secretary-General to form the Group. “Today members are discussing the scope of the group’s work and the areas of governance it will examine over the coming months. “The process is open and the High-Level Group reports to the heads. “The issue of succession of the Head of the Commonwealth is not part of the Group’s mandate,” the statement said. The group is chaired by Anote Tong, former President of Kiribati from 2003 to 2016. Okonjo-Iweala, the Coordinating Minister of the Economy during the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan, is among... |

An aspiring rapper was sentenced to more than 15 years in prison after posing in a music video with guns despite a previous conviction, US prosecutors announced Wednesday. Ricardo Burgos, a little-known Chicago artist who performs under the name Nation, brandished two guns as he rapped “about selling drugs, committing acts of violence and disrespecting law enforcement,” prosecutors said in a statement. While the United States has some of the world's most lax restrictions on guns, felons are forbidden from owning weapons. Burgos was previously convicted of selling crack cocaine and heroin. He pleaded guilty Tuesday and was sentenced to 188 months in prison by Judge Robert Guzman at a federal court in Chicago. Prosecutors said one of the guns in the video was a .45-caliber semi-automatic pistol that had been stolen from a store in neighboring Indiana. It was used in a Chicago shooting before he recorded the video. Prosecutors said that the video, which could not immediately be found online Wednesday, was recorded in a hotel room in the Chicago suburbs in January 2016. Burgos was arrested soon afterward. While US federal law prohibits felons from owning guns, states can reinstate firearm rights — and have increasingly done so, with support from the powerful pro-gun lobby. A total of 5,768 felons were convicted of firearms possession in 2012, according to the US Sentencing Commission. The average sentence that year, the last for which statistics were available, varied widely but averaged 75 months, according to the federal commission. |
