Politics / World Water Day. by anunsainoau: 7:47pm On Mar 22, 2016
ANUNSA OAU ON WORLD WATER DAY
Every 22nd of March is set apart by the United Nations to celebrate WORLD WATER DAY.

Ask any OAU student about how easy it is to access good quality water and you hear several bitter tales. A very large portion of the Sub Saharan Africa still do not have access to quality water in this age and dispensation. A lot of people still have to draw from very deep wells, trek long distances, and engage in several mind boggling activities before they can access water. Unfortunately, most of the water that is accessible to most of us do not even undergo proper treatment and very many people are exposed to avoidable water-borne illnesses. Useful hours of productivity are wasted as those productive hours are transformed into search of water to carry out daily activities.

We appreciate the efforts by UNICEF AFRICA to bring water to the continent in partnership with Unilever, starting with Kenya, Nigeria, Ghana, and Cote d'Ivoire.

We use this medium to call on governments to resuscitate the dead pipe borne treated water systems especially to the rural areas where most of the food is grown. Also, that the popular bore-hole outlets be optimised to serve the benefitting communities for longer periods.

We will also like to call on the government to initiate and I implement policies against the illicit proliferation of sachet water companies that do not have effective recycling strategies in place. These sachets pose serious threat to our environment and existence on this sphere.

We also plead with private companies to look into providing potable water to their host communities as part of their Corporate Social Responsibility.

Thanks and HAPPY WATER DAY.
CHEERS.

Re: PUBLIC PETITION TO PROSECUTE AND PUNISH Dr. LAOLU OGUNKUNLE.

THE ESTABLISHED FACTS FROM ALL PARTIES
As established by our sister association Association of Campus Journalists (ACJ), the following were the claims by all key involved parties.

TOBI ALAAKA'S CLAIM
1. He entered 1,000slt at a little past noon thinking it was the venue for his special elective exam.
2. That Dr OGUNKUNLE accousted him on the suspicion that he was an impersonator in an exam he was co-ordinating - CHM102 .
3. He (Alaaka Tobi) was making to leave for the exit, to which Dr OGUNKUNLE called him back, to which he responded.
4. Dr. OGUNKUNLE felt he was lying, and he landed repeated slaps on him.
5. That Dr OGUNKUNLE dragged him ((Tobi) by the belt buckle.
6. Dr OGUNKUNLE attempted to shove him to the ground, eventually ripping his shirts to shreds.
7. He pleaded tearfully and some young lecturers assisting in supervision pleaded on his behalf too.
8. Dr OGUNKUNLE handed him over to OAU security, who rescued him and apologised to him on Dr OGUNKUNLE's behalf.

EYE WITNESSES' (STUDENTS AT THE VENUE) CLAIM
1. He entered 1,000slt at a little past noon thinking it was the venue for his special elective exam.
2. That Dr OGUNKUNLE accousted him on the suspicion that he was an impersonator in an exam he was co-ordinating - CHM102.
3. He (Alaaka Tobi) was making to leave for the exit, to which Dr OGUNKUNLE called him back, to which he responded.
4. OGUNKUNLE felt he was lying , and he landed repeated slaps on him.

Dr. LAOLU OGUNKUNLE's CLAIM
1. That Tobi sat in the exam Hall without authorization.
2. That he requested for TOBI 'S Identity card but couldn't provide any and that the Student claimed he came for an elective course.
3. That Tobi was leaving the exam Hall, he called him, he didn't respond, he then ran after Tobi.
4. That he held the Student/Tobi by his trousers.
5. That some persons begged for the student.
6. That the student might be an impersonator because students impersonate and may therefore take exam questions out of the hall and do the worked solutions.
7. That Tobi claimed that he doesn't know who he(Tobi) he was.
8. That he handed over the Student to OAU security.

As United Nations ambassadors on OAU campus, we seek for a peaceful resolution to this case. We implore the school management to urgently look into this issue and respond appropriately. We have discovered from all sides that the student was unduly punished and publicly embarrassed by the lecturer. We believe in and uphold the basic law of "innocent until proven guilty". We will also like to say that the student after being found guilty should have been allowed to face the afore-stated discipline regarding examination malpractice as stipulated by the University laws and shouldn't have been manhandled.

Suggested Action Points
1. That the OAU management set up an unbiased inquiry into this incidence.
2. That any discovered violation of the University's standing laws be taken seriously.
3. That an adequate compensation to the aggrieved party be decided and implemented after the inquiry.
4. That a public apology to the aggrieved party be made by the accused party, as the aggrieved was publicly disgraced and humiliated.
5. That a communique be issued denouncing the act to forestall future similar acts.
