Sports / Mahrez: Messi Would Take My Place At Leicester! by anyiwonder: 3:12pm On Nov 11, 2016
The highest-ranked midfielder in the 2016 Goal 50 says that, if he had one wish, he would bring the Argentine attacker to the King Power Stadium.

Riyad Mahrez admits that he would love Leicester City to sign Lionel Messi, even though he fears that the Barcelona ace would take his place in the team!

Mahrez finished seventh in Goal’s annual countdown of the world’s best players and was asked to name the one player he would like to see move to the King Power Stadium if money were no obstacle.

The Algerian winger plumped for the Argentine captain but conceded that having Messi around would make it difficult for him to retain his starting berth.

“I would say Messi but he will take my place!” Mahrez told Goal.

When it came to choosing his coach of the year, Mahrez was torn between the man who masterminded Leicester’s shock Premier League title success, Claudio Ranieri, and his fellow French-Algerian Zinedine Zidane, who led Real Madrid to an 11th European Cup win.

“In England, [the No.1] is our manager and, in the world, I would say Zidane because he won the Champions League,” he revealed.

riyad-mahrez-leicester-city-goal-50_xw9857bzl0ap1k7g1dfkmmsfm

Mahrez was also asked for his top three players of 2016. He had no problem in naming his first two picks but encountered some difficulty in attempting to choose between two more Liga-based stars.

“I would say [Cristiano] Ronaldo, Messi and maybe [Antoine] Griezmann or [Luis] Suarez,” he said.

Mahrez enjoyed a stellar campaign as the Foxes won their first English title last term, with his record of 17 goals and 10 assists earning him the PFA Players’ Player of the Year award.

“It was a good achievement last season,” he stated. “I was happy to be voted the best player in the Premier League. I was proud and I was happy.”

Little was known or expected of the 25-year-old when he joined Leicester from French side Le Havre in the winter of 2014 for just £450,000 (€504,000) but he is now regarded as one of the most exciting attacking players on the planet.

It has been a remarkably rapid rise to prominence but Mahrez insists that he never doubted his ability to thrive at the highest level.

“To be honest, I’ve always believed in myself,” he said. “You can’t see the future but I knew I could do some good things in football. This is one of my dreams. To do it as quick as last season, I’m not sure. Because of Leicester’s good season, everything came in the same moment.

“When I signed here, I knew it was going to be a good experience and I knew we had a good chance to get into the Premier League. I didn’t see my future but I felt it was the right club for me.”

Mahrez and strike partner Jamie Vardy recently committed themselves to long-term contracts at the King Power Stadium and the Sarcelles native is hoping that they can build upon their domestic success with a strong showing in the Champions League.

“Jamie had a fantastic season last season and I think he’s deserved everything,” Mahrez enthused. “It’s a good partnership. He’s a good player and he helps the team a lot. This season we haven’t been very good in the league but we know the goals will come.”

Leicester have won three of their four Champions League matches to date and are in a strong position to qualify from their group, knowing that a win at home to Club Brugge later this month will secure a place in the last 16.

“When I was younger I used to dream about this competition, and now I’m playing in it I’m very happy,” Mahrez admitted. “I’m enjoying every minute of the Champions League games. But I have to carry on in the Premier League as well because it’s one of the best leagues in the world.

“We just need to get through the group first and then we’ll see. There is a future with this team. We don’t know but we have to keep going and we will see.”

riyad-mahrez-leicester-city_1wbybq6vstfjj1y1g5vwlh4xd7

Mahrez has not lost sight of his roots, though, and he celebrated Leicester’s title triumph by visiting the birthplace of his Algerian father over the summer, confessing that the level of attention in Beni Snous left him flabbergasted.

“I just wanted to relax – I always go there for a week or 10 days every year, but it was crazy,” he said. “I didn’t have chance to relax at all, but that’s OK.

“They are very happy. They want to speak with you and have a picture with you, and it’s everyone. It’s not just a few people. It’s good and I’m pleased with making them happy.

“I went as well on some good holidays, but I used to go every year with my dad and I don’t forget these moments. I have to go back to see my family.”

Sports / Mikel In Marseille Talks But Still Wants Chelsea Deal by anyiwonder: 3:03pm On Nov 11, 2016
The Nigeria midfielder has started talks with clubs over a January move, with the French giants having turned their interest into formal discussions this week.

John Obi Mikel’s representatives have had contact from Marseille over a January transfer, with Chelsea looking unlikely to offer him a new contract,101scores understands.

The Nigeria international, whose contract expires at the end of June 2017, has dropped down the pecking order at Stamford Bridge since the arrival of Antonio Conte and is very much on the periphery of the squad. However, he would be interested in renewing with the Blues if an offer was forthcoming.

Marseille, who were subject to a £32 million takeover by Frank McCourt in October, want to convince the 29-year-old to join their squad in January and have opened formal discussions over a move.

Although OM have fallen on hard times in recent seasons, Mikel could be attracted to the offer of playing for one of France’s biggest clubs. Additionally, the Ligue 1 outfit can offer the player and his family a good lifestyle in Provence, though his £75,000-a-week salary could be a sticking point.

Fenerbahce are monitoring the situation but have yet to make a move.

Mikel has previously spoken candidly to Goal about his future and admitted that, if he did not get an offer from Chelsea by January, he would look to begin talks with other clubs.

“I have one year left [on my contract],” Mikel told 101scores . “When you have a year left as a football player, you have to start planning and start thinking about what’s going to happen at the end of the season. Yes, there are going to be rumours, yes, there are going to be conversations between clubs.

“When you have a year left, in January, you are allowed to talk to other clubs and sign a pre-contract or have an agreement so, yes, I will talk to other clubs. You never know what is going to happen.

“I’ve been here for a long, long time. I’ve spent 11 years of my life in this football club, it is my home. This season is the last at the club if my contract ends. I am quite relaxed about it, the future looks good.”

Mikel is Chelsea’s second longest serving player on the Blues’ books after John Terry, and any move away from Stamford Bridge would end his long association with the club.

Sports / Arsenal Forward Alexis Sanchez ‘under Investigation’ After Being Accused Of Evad by anyiwonder: 10:42am On Nov 02, 2016
Alexis Sanchez is being investigated by Barcelona’s Public Prosecutor for evading almost £900,000 in tax, according to reports in Spain.

The Arsenal star, who started in Tuesday night’s 3-2 Champions League win against Ludogorets, is alleged to have defrauded the Spanish Treasury in 2012 and 2013.

Catalan newspaper El Periodico say that Sanchez has been accused of ‘actively withholding’ taxes during his time at Barcelona.

Prosecutor Miguel Angel Perez de Gregorio is said to have signed a complaint against the Chilean, who spent three seasons at the Nou Camp before joining the Gunners in the summer of 2014.

El Periodico claim that Sanchez failed to pay tax due on his image rights after simulating the transfer of them to Numidia Trading, a company based in Malta.

It is said that the 27-year-old evaded £530,000 (587,677 euros) of tax in 2012 and £357,000 (395,766 euros) in 2013 after hiding the existence of Numidia, of which he owned 99 per cent.

The complaint against Sanchez claims that Numidia is a ‘purely instrumental entity’ to facilitate ‘the fraud committed to the Spanish Treasury’ and that the Arsenal star could face two tax offences.

Sanchez is the sixth player to be recently accused of tax evasion during his time at Barcelona, with Lionel Messi, Neymar, Javier Mascherano, Samuel Eto’o and Adriano also facing complaints.

Messi was fined £1.7million in July after him and his father were found guilty of three counts of tax fraud. The Argentine was also handed a 21-month prison sentence, but he will not spend any time in jail due to Spanish law.

Mascherano was sentenced to a year in prison but avoided doing any time after agreeing to pay a fine of £625,000 for two tax offences. The former Liverpool man also paid his full £1.15m debt before he was given his punishment.

Neymar was found guilty of tax evasion by a court in Rio earlier this year and was ordered to pay back £36.3m, while Eto’o and Adriano’s cases are ongoing.

Paul Pogba (Man Utd)
The Frenchman’s move on a free from Manchester United to Juventus in 2012 has passed into infamy as an example of what happens what a club fails to secure the services of a major talent within their midst.
In Italy, Pogba blossomed to become one of the most exciting and talented midfielders in the world. United may now have to pay a world record fee to bring him back to Old Trafford. They could have kept their cash in their pockets had
Sir Alex Ferguson given the youngster more of a chance in the first team.

Jerome Boateng (Man City)
At Bayern Munich, the German centre-back has developed into arguably the best and most complete defenders. The only prize that has alluded him since leaving the Etihad after a single season in 2011 has been the European Championships for his country.

Fast, strong and brilliant on the ball, he was Pep Guardiola’s rock at the back in Bavaria. With Vincent Kompany once again suffering injury problems, what would his former manager and former club do to have him join up with them again now?

Eric Dier (Everton – loan)
Perhaps the only English player to depart Euro 2016 with their reputation enhanced, Tottenham Hotspur’s versatile anchorman might not have had to wait to make a breakthrough back in his homeland had his loan move from Sporting to Everton provided him with more than just a bit of experience of life in the Premier League.

Gerard Pique (Man Utd)
Back across town to Old Trafford, and another world class European centre-back who really has won it all for club and county despite being allowed to depart the Premier League with minimal fuss, Barcelona’s Gerard Pique.
With Spain he has reigned as a champion of the Europe and the World. As a Barcelona player he has so far won three Champions League titles, two trebles and numerous leagues and cups. United, meanwhile, have struggled to replace Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic with players of similar quality. Pique would have fit the bill perfectly.

Kevin De Bruyne (Chelsea)
The Belgian was already highly-rated when he arrived at Stamford Bridge from Genk in 2012 after four seasons of senior football. However, despite his promise, Chelsea never saw the best of him. In 2012 he was loaned out to Werder Bremen. After impressing in the Bundesliga, Wolfsburg snapped him on a permanent deal in January 2014. He flourished as the team’s focal point, topping the charts across Europe for chances created in his first full season with his new club, convincing Manchester City to put down some serious cash to sign him. Chelsea’s loss was a major rival’s gain.

Mikel San Jose (Liverpool)
A Spain international and defensive stalwart of Athletic Club, it’s often forgotten that San Jose was a Liverpool player for three years from 2007 to 2010.
Who knows if he would have come as good at Anfield as he has done in Bilbao but Jurgen Klopp could have certainly done with a player of his calibre last season.

Arjen Robben (Chelsea)
Much like De Bruyne, Robben was already an emerging star in his homeland when Chelsea came calling in 2004. He lasted three seasons in England, winning the Premier League twice along with two League Cups and the FA Cup. But after falling out with Jose Mourinho he was sold to Real Madrid and then later moved on to Bayern Munich. In Germany, he became more than just a dangerous winger but one of the best players in the world.

Nikola Kalinic (Blackburn Rovers)
The Croatian didn’t live up to expectations with Blackburn, scoring just seven goals in 44 league appearances, yet after leaving the North West of England he has thrived for both club and country. In Ukraine, he scored 37 goals in
86 league games for Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk and last season fired home 12 in 36 for Fiorentina as they surged to the front of the pack during the first portion of the Serie A season.
For Croatia, he has scored four goals in four during 2016, including the equaliser against Spain in the their 2-1 Group Stage win.

Diego Forlan (Man Utd)
In 2001, it looked as though United had managed to snag the next big thing in South American football: with 40 goals in 91 games for Independiente, much was expected of Diego Forlan. But after spending three frustrated seasons in the Premier League he left for Spain where he became one of the most prolific goalscorers in Europe.
That’s not to say that the Uruguayan didn’t leave his own during his time in the North West of England. United fans still sing his chant on a match day and venerate him for his goals against their bitter regional rivals, Liverpool.

Adrien Rabiot (Man City)
The Paris Saint-Germain midfielder isn’t exactly Manchester City’s own version of the Paul Pogba debacle endured by United, but during 2008 the 21-year-old was on the club’s books. He is now regarded as one of the most complete prospects in his position in Europe and exactly the sort of player Pep Guardiola would love to work with at the Etihad.

Danny Drinkwater (Man Utd)
A Premier League champion with Leicester City in 2016, Drinkwater is one of many solid, dependable midfield players to come through United’s academy over the past decade or so, and the finest example yet that some of those who have been allowed to leave before being properly tried out perhaps should have stuck around.
His calm, composed style of play alongside the more frantic N’Golo Kante was the driving force for the Foxes’ march to the title, tidying up loose balls and tackles in front of his back four and creating chances from deep. In the same season, Louis van Gaal’s United often looked short of ideas and security through the middle.

Shkodran Mustafi (Everton)
At just 24 years of age, Mustafi is already a World Cup-winner with Germany and the cornerstone of Valencia’s defence. This summer, the 24-year-old Dutch centre-back left PSV Eindhoven after three seasons to complete the third permanent transfer of his professional career, moving to Wolfsburg after winning back-to-back league titles in the Netherlands.
Between 2007 and 2013, however, Bruma was a Chelsea player and yet another talented footballer allowed to leave a Premier League squad too soon.

Giuseppe Rossi (Man Utd)
Long before Marcus Rashford and James Wilson there was Giuseppe Rossi – the New Jersey-born Italian-American wonderkid striker who combined excellent technical skills with predatory instincts and a low centre of gravity to look every bit the modern centre-forward the age of David Villa and Lionel Messi.
However, a loan move to Newcastle United under Glenn Roeder proved to be an ill-suited setback rather than an opportunity and injuries robbed him of his momentum. Like Forlan, he was allowed to move to Spain where he soon became one of the most dangerous attackers in La Liga before injury ruined his progress, and scuppered a move to join Barcelona. At least United didn’t have to watch on with even more regret as their former youngster conquered Europe with the Catalans too.

Iago Falque (Tottenham Hotspur)
After spells with Real Madrid, Barcelona and Juventus as a youth player, Roma winger Falque certainly had the CV of a prospect with a pedigree when he signed for Spurs in 2011 after a breakthrough season out on loan with Villarreal. However, like with so much of the talent that has passed through White Hart Lane over the years, it never really happened for the Spaniard in north London. He left in 2014 after making only one Premier League appearance.

Denis Suarez (Man City)
Last season, Denis Suarez was the creative star at the heart of a Villarreal side that reached the final four of the Europa League and fourth in La Liga. This summer, he has moved to Barcelona after having originally left the club to join the Yellow Submarine in 2015 but before he was a player for the Catalans he was a young talent on the books of Manchester City. Ryan Shawcross (Man Utd)
Stoke City’s bruising enforcer used to be on the books of the United academy before he moved to the Potteries on a permanent basis in 2008 after a season on loan.
While his style of play may not always endear him to the aesthetes he remains a very effective and troublesome defender for attackers to deal with. After watching their centre-backs crumple under minimal pressure in recent years, the calls to bring Shawcross back to Old Trafford have become a common feature most transfer windows.

Borja Valero (West Brom)
Today, Valero is the beating heart of Fiorentina’s midfield but in 2008 he rocked up at the Hawthorns for a spell in the Premier League that never saw the midfielder showcase his true potential. After two seasons on loan with Mallorca and then Villarreal, the former Real Madrid youth product moved to the latter on a permanent basis to become one of the most celebrated players outside of the big three in La Liga.

Boateng isn’t the only young centre-back whose potential City have failed to make the most of in recent seasons. However, he lasted just a season before being moved on in a part-exchange deal with Fiorentina for Matija Nastasić, who has also since departed for Schalke. Sports / Arsenal Star To Miss Spurs & Man Utd Games After Suffering ‘significant’ Injury by anyiwonder: 5:06pm On Oct 27, 2016
Arsenal have been deal a fresh injury blow with the news that summer signing Lucas Perez has been ruled out for six weeks with an ankle ligament injury, according to the Guardian.

Perez has found first team football hard to come by following his £17m move from Deportivo La Coruña during the summer transfer window with the striker making just three starts and two substitute appearances so far.
The Spanish hitman was selected to line-up against Reading in the League Cup clash on Tuesday night and was keen to impress as he looked to force his way in to Arsene Wenger’s first team plans on a more consistent basis.

However, the 28-year-old went down clutching his ankle following a strong challenge from Danzell Gravenberch in the 72nd minute and eventually limped down the tunnel with the Arsenal physio having been replaced by Chris Willock during the 2-0 win.

It looks like the striker is now set for a spell on the sidelines as the Guardian claim that sources close to the player have now confirmed that Perez has sustained ‘significant’ ligament damage and is expected to miss around six week.

If accurate, it means Perez is now set to miss key games against Tottenham and Manchester United next month as well as our crunch Champions League clash with Paris Saint-Germain.

olivier-giroud-arsenal

The news will come as a huge blow to Arsenal as Danny Welbeck and Chuba Akpom are out until the New Year while Olivier Giroud is still working on his match fitness having yet to start a game this season so Wenger is now dangerously low on striking options.

Alexis Sanchez has been performing superbly through the middle so far this season but the Gunners would be screwed if anything was to happen to the Chilean superstar, particularly with key games against Spurs and United coming up over the next few weeks.

Sports / Mourinho Apologises To Man Utd Fans For Chelsea Mauling by anyiwonder: 6:49pm On Oct 26, 2016
The Portuguese manager has said sorry to “all United supporters around the world” on behalf of his squad for the 4-0 hammering at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.

Jose Mourinho has apologised to Manchester United fans following his side’s 4-0 defeat at Chelsea on Sunday.
The Portuguese boss’ first appearance in the away dugout at Stamford Bridge ended with a chastening loss, but United’s supporters were still heard out-singing their Chelsea counterparts in the dying stages of the Premier League fixture.

And as he prepares for Wednesday’s EFL Cup fourth-round tie with Manchester City at Old Trafford, Mourinho has used his programme notes as an opportunity to say sorry to the United followers.

“As the leader of this squad I want to start by saying sorry to all the Manchester United fans around the world. Sunday’s 4-0 defeat at Chelsea was not a United result; it was a result that has made us all extremely sorry for all our supporters and we all apologise for it,” Mourinho wrote.

“Once again at Stamford Bridge our fans were sensational. I cannot think of another set of supporters who would be singing for 90 minutes like that when their teaam was losing. They were a credit to the club and I feel so sorry for them that the result could not match their performance.”

Mourinho went on to aim fire at Wednesday’s opponents City, reminding everyone that they too have been subjected to a similarly humiliating defeat recently.

“I can say for sure that they are also unhappy with their current situation, having suffered their own 4-0 defeat in Barcelona a week ago and coming into tonight’s game without a win in five games, but that does not change the fact that they are a very good team with a very good manager and very good, experienced players.”

Sports / From Borussia Dortmund To Barcelona – 10 Best-selling Football Kits by anyiwonder: 2:21pm On Oct 20, 2016
Commercialism in sport, particularly football, has vastly evolved over the years with clubs increasingly putting pen to paper regarding club sponsorships and massive kit contracts.

Sport360 looks at ten clubs who have greatly profited from selling numerous units of shirts worldwide, as revealed by sportingintelligence.

BORUSSIA DORTMUND

The instantly-recognisable yellow and black colours of Dortmund sell for 393,000.

JUVENTUS

Sad to see Serie A make an appearance so low down the list with Juve selling 452,000 shirts.

PSG

One of the three Ligue 1 teams in the top 20, PSG have made big strides to sell an average 526,000 shirts.

ARSENAL

Kit maker Puma took over the responsibility in 2013 and that’s helped Arsenal shift 835,000 shirts.

LIVERPOOL

Despite not winning a league title in 26 years, the Reds’ PR machine is strong with 852,000 shirts sold.

CHELSEA

The 2015 Premier League champions complete the top five with 899,000 shirts sold on average.

BAYERN MUNICH

The German juggernauts won the Bundesliga four times in the period of the study, selling 1.2m shirts.

BARCELONA

The La Liga champions are in a distant third with 1.278m shirts sold on average per year.

Sports / VIDEO – Barcelona 4-0 Manchester City: Pep Guardiola’s Five Worst Defeats As Man by anyiwonder: 2:11pm On Oct 20, 2016
Eight years ago, Pep Guardiola created a monster when he transformed a reasonably successful Barcelona side into arguably the finest team club football has ever seen.

After four years and an incredible 14 trophies, the Spaniard left the Nou Camp but the most fearsome monsters evolve and after a transitional spell, that’s precisely what Barcelona have done under Luis Enrique.

On Wednesday night, on his return to the stadium where he achieved so much, Guardiola was hardly a happy camper. A warm embrace with Enrique in the tunnel was as good as it got for the Manchester City boss as his side were dealt a 4-0 humbling with Guardiola’s former golden boy Lionel Messi running rampant.

The result was a stunning indication of how far Barcelona have come since his departure and how far he needed to take the Premier League outfit.

A defeat of this nature is not something Guardiola is accustomed to but he’s not completely alien to it either.

Here’s a look at his five worst defeats as manager.

BAYERN MUNICH 0-3 BORUSSIA DORTMUND, APRIL 2014 (BUNDESLIGA)

Despite coming against their closest rivals, the defeat was an upset for Guardiola’s Bayern side. The Bavarians were running away with the league title but were knocked down a peg.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan opened the scoring in the 20th minute before second half strikes from Marco Reus and Jonas Hoffman confirmed the victory for the visitors.

Bayern suffered little more than wounded pride though as Jurgen Klopp’s side remained a massive 17 points adrift with just four games left.

INTER MILAN 3-1 BARCELONA, APRIL 2010 (CHAMPIONS LEAGUE)

Despite falling behind against the defending champions, Jose Mourinho’s Inter side produced a masterclass to stage a 3-1 comeback in the Champions League semi-final first leg.

It was a remarkable achievement for the Serie A side against an all-conquering Barcelona. Mourinho’s complicated relationship with the Spanish outfit served as the backdrop as he took on Guardiola, the man who occupied the job he so desired.

Wesley Sneijder, Maicon and Diego Milito were all on the score sheet as the win enabled Inter to progress to the finals of the Champions League with a 3-2 aggregate score

BORUSSIA DORTMUND 4-2 BAYERN MUNICH, JULY 2013 (GERMAN SUPERCUP)

Played one, lost one – and to your fiercest rivals no less. It was hardly the perfect start for Guardiola in German football.

Losing his first competitive match in charge of Bayern put a little bit of heat on the Spaniard who arrived with a massive reputation while fans still mourned the departure of the treble-winning Jupp Heynckes.

Despite Arjen Robben’s double, Dortmund were helped to victory with a brace from Marco Reus, an Ilkay Gundogan strike and Daniel van Buyten’s own goal.

BARCELONA 4-0 MANCHESTER CITY, OCTOBER 2016 (CHAMPIONS LEAGUE)

The most recent of his defeats, Guardiola’s City side were outclassed by a Barcelona team that exhibited bursts of scintillating football.

However, the real concern for the award-winning coach is that the hosts were aided by the individual errors of his own players.

Claudio Bravo’s howler which got him sent off stands out but there were poor performances all over the pitch and it showed just how far City were from challenging the best Europe has to offer.

BAYERN MUNICH 0-4 REAL MADRID, APRIL 2014 (CHAMPIONS LEAGUE)

This is the defeat Guardiola still refers to as the worst in his career and you can understand why. Despite his domestic success with Bayern, Champions League glory was what he was hired to achieve.

With his predecessor signing off with a historic treble, the bar was set as high as it could go. Guardiola faced familiar foes in Real Madrid as they stood between him and the Champions League final.

Following a narrow defeat at the Bernabeu, the contest at the Allianz Arena was anything but close. Bayern were outdone by the two best ways to score against a Guardiola side; counter-attacks and set-pieces.

Sergio Ramos headed in twice from set-pieces while Cristiano Ronaldo rounded off a counter-attack before putting away a free-kick as well to complete the 4-0 rout.

Sports / REVEALED: Psg’s Top Secret €222m Deal To Sign Neymar Next Summer by anyiwonder: 9:25pm On Oct 10, 2016
Paris Saint German were rebuffed in their efforts to sign the forward in the summer, but they will return in 2017 with an even bigger offer for both club and player.

The French Giant are ready to renew their efforts to sign Barcelona star Neymar, and are planning a bumper package worth up to €222 million in order to land their man.

After a long, fruitless quest to bring Cristiano Ronaldo to Paris, leaders of the French club turned their eyes on Neymar last summer. Nasser Al-Khelaifi and Olivier Letang rolled out the red carpet to try to sign the Brazilian this season, offering an astronomical salary (matching Messi’s Barcelona deal) as well as several hefty financial clauses to entice the striker.

PSG are sparing no expense in trying to bring Neymar to the French capital, and the Parisian sporting director keeps in regular contact with the Brazilian’s inner circle.

The operation was close to being completed this summer, according to sources close to the player, as he was tempted to join up with friends Marquinhos, Lucas Moura and Thiago Silva in Ligue 1. The attacker eventually declined to continue talks in favour of signing a new deal with Barcelona at the beginning of July, for a salary estimated at €25 million per year until 2021.

Barcelona, meanwhile, remain firm on the subject. “The deal was agreed in January, only administrative snags stopped us from signing before,” a source in the Spanish city explains. Agent Wagner Ribeiro and Neymar Sr. without a doubt used PSG’s interest to push up Barca’s offer, but ultimately the player turned down a massive contract offer – worth €40m – to stay at Camp Nou. His salary, however, remains some way behind the €42m that Messi receives annually, even with the revisions made in the face of the French club’s advances.

lionel-messi-neymar-barcelona_39abo9tcx4n31fg6okzi7559t

That failed attempt, however, was just the start for PSG. Now their attention has switched to a new raid for the coming season. Former coach Laurent Blanc revealed in April that the club would veer away from signing big names in favour of bolstering the team as a unit; but that assertion seems to run contrary to the management’s plans, with the objective a megastar who can fill the void left by Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

While Neymar’s refusal may have increased PSG’s transfer activity in the last window, their frugal spending demonstrates the club’s decision to keep enough money in the bank to meet the Brazilian’s €222m release clause next season. That figure will increase to €250m in 2018, while his wages will similarly skyrocket. The coming year, then, is a crucial one for the French directors as they seek their marquee signing.

In Barcelona, meanwhile, there is little concern over the matter. Club officials are convinced that Neymar is content at the club and is not considering a move away, at least for the immediate future.

new-camp-nou-nuevo-camp-nou_1sot90dgtbv961t9fntqe7k22l

The big project on the cards for Barcelona concerns the Camp Nou, and a €600m overhaul to modernise the famous old ground. Works are scheduled, permits pending, to begin next summer, and 101scores understands that gaining permission to break ground is by no means certain. The renovation, however, may have an impact on the playing budget, mirroring the events of 60 years ago when the promising Luis Suarez was sold to Italy to offset the construction costs of Camp Nou and club idol Laszlo Kubala.

In 2017 history might just be repeated with Neymar and Lionel Messi, and if it does PSG will be at the front of the queue for the talented Brazilian.

Sports / Manchester United Sign Wayne Rooney’s Six-year-old Son Kai by anyiwonder: 1:04pm On Oct 10, 2016
The Manchester united captain may have battled for form in recent weeks, but his son has taken a positive step by joining the club’s development squad.

Dropped by Manchester United and booed by England fans, it is fair to say that Wayne Rooney has not had the best start to the season.

It is not entirely bad news for the Rooney family, though, with the Red Devils captain’s son having been signed by United’s youth development squad.

Six-year-old Kai participated in training at the club’s academy and has reportedly now joined the ranks as he seeks to follow in his father’s footsteps, much like Michael Carrick’s child Jacey.

A source quoted by The Sun said: “Wayne and Michael really get into it when they bring their their boys down.

“The kids seem to love it and have been coming down regularly in the week to train with the young development squad.

“It’s a bit funny because both their dads aren’t playing as much any more but these guys could be the club’s stars of the future.”

Sports / Riyad Mahrez: Leicester Blocked Move To Arsenal by anyiwonder: 12:00pm On Oct 10, 2016
Riyad Mahrez has revealed he could have joined Arsenal during the close season, but Leicester refused to let the forward speak to the London club about a possible transfer.
Mahrez said he was aware of an offer from Arsenal, but refused to attempt to force a move away from the King Power Stadium after Claudio Ranieri made it clear he wanted the Algerian forward to remain with the Premier League champions.

His Leicester team-mate Jamie Vardy also rejected a move to Arsenal during the summer.

“There was contact with Arsenal,” Mahrez told Canal Football Club.

“But Leicester wanted to keep me and I was pretty expensive.

Crime / Attack By Cultists Leave 9 Dead In Ohaji by anyiwonder: 8:59am On Aug 23, 2016
Another source said the incident was caused by the imposition of traditional rulers on the people by the state government.

Cultism-Member-of-Axe-confraternity

AN ATTACK BY CULTISTS IN OHAJI-EGBEMA LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF IMO STATE, HAS CLAIMED NINE LIVES.

Confirming the incident, the state police Commissioner, Taiwo Lakanu said a joint security team is working to restore peace.

According to him, “We heard that some people were killed, but the situation is not as terrible as that. Two cults are involved in the crisis in that community and the problem has been on for about three years. After killing each other, they would retreat into the creeks. The terrain is difficult and because the families of the victims don’t also cooperate with the police in the area of information, it becomes difficult to make arrests.

“We have, however, met with the military and the representatives of the government to improve security in the community. We have also deployed two units of riot policemen in the area and soldiers are making efforts to send in troops as well. We are trying to recruit those who will give information that will aid our investigations.”

According to Punch, some residents who fled the community for fear of being killed, said the fight was over crude oil deposits in the area.

Another man, Kingsley Igwe, whose brother was allegedly killed by the cultists, also said “The incident happened on Monday morning while he was on a visit. Those men attacked him at the market square and shot him dead. He was married with two children and his wife was pregnant.

“After he was killed on Monday, those gunmen shot two people dead on Tuesday. On Wednesday, another man in the community was killed. On Thursday, a taxi driver was waylaid and shot dead. A total of nine people were killed last week.

“As I speak to you, there is no school, market or church in the community that is functioning. Everybody has deserted the place. I have also run away.”

Another indigene, Emeka Ononomadu, added that “That place has been reduced to a war zone by cult members due to the deposit of oil in the community. And the problem started when the state government decided to encroach into the traditional selection process. Some groups, who did not want to be ruled by leaders imposed by the government, kicked and started fomenting trouble. This developed into a full-blown war among communities, led by cult groups.”

The first lady of Imo state, Nneoma Rochas-Okorocha, in an extreme show of benevolence reportedly gifted an orphan boy with a two bedroom bungalow.

Sports / Pogba Too Expensive For Barcelona – Braida by anyiwonder: 1:26pm On Aug 12, 2016
The Blaugrana’s director of international football has revealed the club were interested in the midfielder but pulled out of the race to land him for “economic reasons”

Barcelona’s director of international football Ariedo Braida has claimed the club pulled out of the race to sign Paul Pogba because they felt the France international was too expensive.

Pogba was being strongly linked with a move to Camp Nou before completing a switch to Manchester United from Juventus for a world record £93.8m fee on Tuesday.

And Braida has since revealed the Liga champions were keen to sign the midfielder, but dropped their interest because “no one is worth that kind of money”.

“Barcelona pulled out of the race to sign Pogba for economic reasons,” Braida told La Gazzetta dello Sport.

“There is no discussion about his qualities and I think he will assert himself at Manchester United, but there will be criticism each time he is not at his best. People will see the transfer fee and expect him to win games on his own and this is simply not possible.

“Some figures are upsetting. No one is worth that kind of money. When you get to a certain level, we are getting too detached from normal life. We are talking about an operation of €150 million if we include wages.

Politics / Why Poverty Persists In Africa, By Women Leaders by anyiwonder: 3:17pm On Aug 08, 2016
Poverty and underdevelopment ravaging the African continent might have been caused by the exclusion of women from governance. This was the view of Women’s Power Lunch (WPL), a platform for women leaders and influencers. The group was founded by Mrs. Aisha Muhammed-Oyebode.
Worried by the declining standard of living on the continent, the group regretted that the potential of womanhood had not fully been harnessed and embodied into governance.
“It does seem that especially in these parts (Africa), there is a reluctance to embrace the idea of female authority figures of women in power and leadership. Can you imagine how the narrative of Africa would change if women are given their rightful place at the table? This is why the women who have broken these barriers are such powerful and compelling heroines,” the group noted.
On July 28, influential people from all walks of life, including the former president of Nigeria, Olusegun Obasanjo, and the former president of Malawi, Mrs. Joyce Banda, converged on Lagos to celebrate what they described as the unique strength and valour of womanhood. The group concurred that its aim was to raise women of substance who would care for their generation in politics, economy and other spheres of life.
Convener of the group, Mrs. Aisha Muhammed-Oyebode, daughter of the former head of state, late Muritala Muhammed, identified that women are good role models in every society.
She emphasised that women have already broken so many barriers and debunked many mythical formulations about their alleged inferiority.
“In many respects, politics and governance appear to be the final arbiter in terms of female achievement. Nigerian women are already leading the drive for economic growth and progress. Often underestimated are our mothers, yet, we are all products of their strength, tenacity, courage and resourcefulness,” she averred.
She said she conceived the idea of bringing women from diverse backgrounds together to provide opportunities for them to learn, network, mentor and collaborate with one another with the aim of achieving synergy. More importantly, she argued, it would be an opportunity to showcase women role models and trailblazers on the continent. She said the Women’s Power Lunch series had grown to become one of the leading stops in the international calendar of events dedicated to women and development in Africa.
She said the group had hosted a number of iconic African women, including former South African First Lady, Graca Machel Mandela, who was hosted last year, and the former Malawian President, Mrs. Joyce Banda who was billed to present a keynote address at the event.
She said: “President Banda was credited with reversing the trajectory of an ailing economy that was on the verge of collapse when she took office and initiated a series of economic reforms that increased the country’s economic growth rate from 1.8 per cent to 6.2 per cent in two years. Before assuming the presidency, President Banda served as a member of parliament, Minister of Gender and Child Welfare, Foreign Minister, and Vice President of the Republic of Malawi.
“President Banda strengthened civil institutions and deepened democracy by repealing a number of repressive laws that abridged civil liberties and limited press freedom. One of her first acts upon taking office which signalled the direction of her administration was her sale of the multi-million dollar presidential jet and the donation of 30 per cent of her salary to the Malawi Council for the Handicapped, an organisation that caters for individuals serving with disabilities. This is only a part of the legacy that President Banda left which stands as a shimmering example not only to Malawi but to all of Africa.”
The WPLI convener, who is also the chief executive officer, Murtala Muhammed Foundation, advocated for oneness and unity among women of the continent. Unity, she argued, would serve as a force to shatter barriers that have held women folk backward in many parts of the world.
Said she: “There are barriers rooted in ill-conceived policies and retrogressive traditions that restrict female access to qualitative education. There is the glass barrier that keeps eminently qualified women out of the highest levels of public service and corporate governance even when their talents and competence have been proven repeatedly. There are barriers in the form of unfair standards that ensure women are paid less than men in the workplace, and other allied practices and conventions that are designed to place the toga of inadequacy and inferiority upon womanhood. These barriers have the combined effect of preventing women from living full creative lives and maximising their potential. I have made it my life’s work to challenge these policies that relegate women to sub-optimal lives. If our work at the Murtala Muhammed Foundation can be summed up in one word, it is ‘empowerment.’
“Our mission is to empower women – to give them the tools with which to surmount the obstacles in the path of their self-actualisation – whether it is by promoting girl child education, or enabling female professionals break new grounds in their chosen careers. Our foundation is constantly looking for creative ways of engaging the social, cultural and institutional forces that hold women back with an eye on the big picture – the betterment of our continent and ensuring that we leave behind a more sustainable world for our children.”
Muhammed-Oyebode said Africa’s quest for progress could not be decisively resolved until the issue of the “woman question” was tackled. What then is the woman question? She explained: “Building inclusive societies which create spaces for women to take their place as productive actors in their national economies and politics is essential to promoting sustainable development outcomes. Interestingly, we are in a significant historical moment that highlights the zenith of female possibilities. In the United Kingdom, Theresa Mary has just become the Prime Minister. The United States is hopefully on the verge of electing its first female president, Hillary Rodham Clinton. These landmarks will resonate powerfully with a generation that is too young to have known Indira Gandhi, Margaret Thatcher and Golda Meir.
“However the trajectory of our continent is frightening. The narrative today is desperate, poverty, and under development. That perhaps is not surprising. so long as the 50 per cent of the population that gives birth to the 100 per cent is excluded, perhaps then we cannot complain about this narrative. In fact, I always say, can you imagine how much better our continent would be if our women were all given a chance?”
In his address, Chairman of the Murtala Muhammed Foundation, former President Obasanjo, hailed Banda for the active role she had been playing to support and promote women and women leadership in Africa.
In her address, former President Banda lauded the Murtala Muhammed Foundation for its efforts to “tirelessly work on sustaining the current wave of women in leadership positions in Africa and championing policies of inclusivity on the African continent.”
She said it was abundantly clear that women face the full blunt of poverty, diseases and climate change, among others.
“They have limited access to means of production such as land, financing and technologies. They are discriminated against at workplaces and in public life in general. They are underrepresented in policy-making circles. The list goes on and on and the picture, despite some strides made in some areas, remains less inspiring and remains wanting. The situation simply cannot be allowed to go on without being redressed and reversed.
“As women leaders, it rests upon us to take a leading role in making this happen. We need to ensure formulation of deliberate policies and programmes that benefit women,” she emphasised.
Banda said such policies and programmes must equip the woman with necessary business acumen, necessary marketing skills, necessary business management skills and, above all, give her access to market and financing. “The people to make all this happen are you and I as African women leaders.”

Celebrities / Painful Thing Dad Did To Me –eucharia Anunobi by anyiwonder: 7:36pm On Aug 07, 2016
Veteran actress, Eucharia Anunobi assumed that the world would be at her feet growing up in a wealthy family. But she was mistaking. Life taught her a different lesson.
With passion to succeed, the Imo State-born actress never threw in the towel. She forged ahead through modelling and saw her way through. In this exclusive interview with Entertainer, Anunobi opens up on her life as an evangelist and actor.
What has been your experience since you lost your father?
My father died last year. My father’s memorial is in August. When I went to see my father in the mortuary, I saw one of the wonders of God. His beards were still growing. I was like ‘excuse me, you mean that hair doesn’t die?’ That was amazing! The hairs on my father’s head were still growing and they needed to be shaved before the final dressing and lay to rest. We are wonderful creatures.
How do you combine acting and being born again?
Do you know when I started ministering? By the grace of God, I gave my life to God on March 17, 1997, at Holy Ghost Power Ministry Church, Adeniyi Jones, Lagos. The pastor of the church then was Pastor Emma Obasi who is still a father of faith to me. March 17, 2017 will make it 20 years I have been with God. While you are seeing me as a movie legend, all the years you have been seeing ‘act all the actable’. I am still acting because I have not left my talent. This is my own definition of being born again. Born again means you have realised and discovered that you were living a life of sin, but now, you want to live a life that would please God.
As a born again, how do your colleagues relate with you?
I remember years ago when I gave my life to God, my colleagues were laughing at me. ‘Your mates are busy doing aristo, your mates are busy seeing governors, your mates are busy going to the clubs in Victoria Island, Ikeja, and everywhere, you sey na church you wan go’. They used to say that ‘something is wrong with Eucharia’. ‘Can you imagine with all her degrees, and doctorate in waiting, na to go church?’ But today, by the grace of God, where I sit they can’t sit; where I go they can’t go. I sit with governors and presidents not for aristo, and not for someone to take me to a corner of a room to sleep with me. I am not among the superstars they would say, ‘that one get good shape, go corner her for hotel for me’ and they come and meet you only in the night. They don’t need to take me to any corner of the room through Personal Assistant. They call me to the lobby of the governor or president’s chapel to pray and declare the word of God Almighty. And when I am done, they shake my hands and say, ‘lay hands on me’.
Tell us something about Eucharia that the people don’t know.
I paid my way through university. I came from a privileged home. I no be ajepako, I be ajebota (butter girl). My family house was at 5, Musa Yar`adua Street, Victoria Island (in Lagos). I went to St. George’s Primary School, the one at Falomo in Lagos and Army Chidren’s School, Guardian Barrack. I had ‘A’ in most of my subjects in secondary school. The next thing, I supposed to enter university, but my father called the whole family because I am the first-born and says, ‘I don’t have interest in training a girl further after secondary school’. My own father, Chief Ejike Emekache Ezenwa Anunobi, said that! He said he would train only the boys. So, after leaving secondary school with brilliant results, my father said ‘no!’ With all the money wey he get. We get two cars that time, to tell you how rich we were. We dey live for flat with Oyibo people around. Yet, my father abandoned me in the middle of the way. That was how, on my own at age 16, I started to fight for my destiny. But then, good friends helped me.
What kept you going and how did you pull through?
The bible says, ‘show me your friend and I will tell you who you are’. My good friend, Peter Ononiwu knew me back then. He saw my tears as I was crying. He said ‘do you know that you are a very beautiful girl with a fine shape? ‘You can start modelling’. It was Peter that introduced me to modelling. That was how I started modelling. Modelling has gone down; it was at that time that modelling was on. There was no modelling show they did that I was not on the front burner. It was then I discovered that God gave me a good shape. It was then I discovered I had a unique face. You know, people call me ‘the ancient lady’, ‘Philippians lady’ or ‘Chinese lady’ because of my face and small eyes and because I have unique features. So, when any fashion designer saw me, he or she would pick me because of God’s glory upon my life, and because I started seeking God early. It was the denouncement of my father that, he’s not going to send me or any other girl to university or higher institution that made me seek God early. After that, I started modelling. But I was determined in myself that, if my father said a girl can be nothing, then I would prove him wrong. I said to myself ‘I am not a mistake of creation’. ‘There is a reason God made me a female’.
I used to hear him telling some of his friends that Eucharia is too brilliant to be a girl; she should have been a boy. And I would say to myself ‘na me come make myself boy? Why would he be saying that I should have been a boy? On my own, I said a girl must be something and I started digging the bible. By the grace of God, I fought for myself. I paid for my JAMB and then passed. I went to University of Nigeria, Nsukka, and in those four years, I paid my school fees by myself. There is a reason why you are depressed, because if I am not denied of the blessing, I won’t be who I am today. There is a reason my father turned his back on me, because if maybe he left me in the comfort zone or comfort home, I wouldn’t be able to discover who I am.
As an evangelist, do you still accept scripts like Ashawo (Prostitute)?
If they give me the one of Ashawo, I will do. But then, I’m not going to smoke, because I don’t smoke in real life, and I’m not going to drink. I can simulate, for instance, like in drinking, but then, I might not wear clothes that will reveal parts of my body. There is one I did with Mama Patience, we went to rob a bank; there’s a film we went to rob a bank. We were carrying AK-47; the gun is heavy o! The title of the movie is Widow’s Gang.

Celebrities / Secrets 20-year Marriage–omosexy by anyiwonder: 7:22pm On Aug 07, 2016
Actress and super mum, Omotola Jalade-Ekehinde aka Omosexy recently celebrated her 20th wedding anniversary in grand style. Entertainer caught up with her during the launch of beauty product, Ghandour Cosmetics, in Lagos and she opened up on the secrets to her successful marriage. She also talked about life as Ghandour’s brand ambassador.

You recently celebrated your 20th year wedding anniversary, how does it feel being married for 20 years?

I am thankful that I am married to my friend and my destiny supporter. There is no relationship without challenges. Twenty years have rolled by and some people are saying ‘oh my God, you guys must be living without stress!’ I just want people to know that if you are determined to do anything in life you will make it. Generally, there are challenges in life. It could be with your parents or siblings so it is a normal thing. However, don’t use every opportunity for a quarrel with your spouse to justify the fact that everybody says marriage is hard and challenging. I understand that there are some relationships that have more challenges. However, if there is any form of abuse involved, I think victims should find their way out quickly. But if there is no abuse, you can hang in there. I have had good times with my spouse, and now we are just friends, that is what matters most.

What is your definition of beauty and how does it reflect in a woman?

For women, beauty lies in confidence. If you are a confident woman and understands your self-worth; then you are beautiful. And that is why sometimes you see some girls that you think are not aesthetically beautiful, but any time they walk into a room, everybody turns. That is because of confidence. So, beauty for a woman and even a man is knowing yourself well, understanding your body and working with what you have. Most women don’t have everything; even I don’t have everything but there are some things that you have and you must embrace them to be beautiful. Ghandour Cosmetics is all about hair and you know for a woman, your face is the first thing someone sees. Your face is your introduction and your hair is the crown of your face.

You are not growing any younger, are you not scared of growing old?

Well, I am 38 and I am not scared of growing old. But even if I was 51, the fear of growing old would be of no consequence because even small children now have grey hairs. I think we should all embrace who we are. I think if people are achieving in life they won’t be afraid of old age. But when you look back in life and you think you have not achieved anything, you will feel like time is running by and you will be afraid of aging. But if you are contented in life and know that all fingers are not equal and you are where you are meant to be, you will not fear old age, because you could actually be six feet below. That you are alive and healthy is enough reason to celebrate.

You are a stylish woman, who makes your dresses?

I make it a point of duty not to promote designers that are not Nigerians. This outfit was not designed by a Nigerian, so I don’t need to hype it. However, I am styled by Moashi; I only hype Nigerian designers.

For how long have you been Ghandour’s brand ambassador?

For three years. Though, this is their first time in Nigeria, they have been in Ghana for two years. I am comfortable with the brand.

Politics / Kogi: Appeal Court Dismisses Wada’s Appeal by anyiwonder: 6:59pm On Aug 04, 2016
The Appeal Court sitting in Abuja on Thursday dismissed an appeal filed by former governor of Kogi State, Idris Wada, challenging the decision of the state election tribunal which upheld Yahaya Bello’s victory in last year’s governorship election.

In a split decision of four to one, the court held that Bello was validly substituted for the late Abubakar Audu, the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate, who died before the conclusion of the election.

Dismissing Wada’s argument that Bello was not qualified for the election because he did not participate in all stages of the election, the court held that the governor participated in all the stages “by virtue of his party participation and accrued interest.”

Justice Mojeed Owoade, who read the lead judgment, said the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) was right to have merged the votes scored by Audu (before he died) and that of Bello (in the supplementary election) to return the APC’s candidate as winner.

The court, which resolved all the six issues determined against the appellant, held that Wada failed to prove his allegation of that the election was held in violation of the Constitution and Electoral Act.

Sports / Everton Tell Manchester City John Stones Will Cost £50m And No Less by anyiwonder: 5:38pm On Aug 04, 2016
Everton are standing firm on their £50m valuation of John Stones and have told Manchester City to take it or leave it, Sky sources understand.

The two clubs have been in talks for several weeks over a move to the Etihad for the England international, but Somto sports News HQ has been told there is effectively no negotiation to be done.

The ball is now in City’s court and they must decide whether they are willing to meet that valuation or move on to other targets.

Stones has continued to train and turned out for Everton on their recent tour of Germany, as well as in Wayne Rooney’s goalless testimonial at Old Trafford on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, Everton are expected to return with a second offer for Swansea captain Ashley Williams as Stones’ replacement.

The Welsh club have said they want to keep him but Somto sources understand they could be persuaded to do business with an opening offer of around £15m.
