Nigerian Singer, dancer and song writer, Yemi Alade has condemned DR Congo’s Acceptance of Coronavirus vaccine testing in the country. In series of tweet via the singer’s verified Twitter Account, she called out African leaders for collecting bribes and accepting diseases and derogatory terms for Africans. According to Yemi, its a normal thing for individual to volunteer for testing but for the entire country to be used for testing shows that someone( the government) has been paid stressing that UK is offering individuals who volunteers for testing 3000 pounds per individual. Yemi further stressed that Africa remains the only continent majorly hit by Yellow fever and malaria hence these two should be tackled first before adding coronavirus to the list Excerts from her tweets; “We have so much problems to deal with in Africa, they now want to add Vaccine testing. NO NO NO”Recall that News9naija earlier reported that Congo Becomes First African Country To Accept Vaccine Testing , Jean-Jacques Muyembe, head of the Congo’s National Biological Institute informed newsmen that the Congo “has been chosen to conduct these tests,” Read it here https://www.news9naija.com.ng/2020/04/04/yemi-alade-condemns-congos-acceptance-of-coronavirus-vaccine-testing/

An Official of the Democratic Republic Of Congo has expressed the country’s readiness to participate in corona virus vaccine testing, becoming the first African country to do so. Jean-Jacques Muyembe, head of the National Biological Institute had during briefing to newsmen said, “We’ve been chosen to conduct these tests,” Muyembe further said, “The vaccine will be produced in the United States, or in Canada, or in China. We’re candidates for doing the testing here,” “At some point, COVID-19 will be uncontrollable,” “The only way to control it will be a vaccine, just like Ebola. It was a vaccine that helped us end the Ebola epidemic.” Muyember’s comments has since sparked outrage on social media outlets with many describing the statement as ascribing the country’s population as “guinea pigs” for testing vaccine. This is coming after a controversial video of two French countries suggesting that Africa should be used during the vaccine testing period. “If I can be provocative,” responded Jean-Paul Mira, head of intensive care at Cochin Hospital in Paris, “shouldn’t we be doing this study in Africa, where there are no masks, no treatments, no resuscitation?” “A bit like as it is done elsewhere for some studies on AIDS,” the doctor added, according to the report. “In prostitutes, we try things because we know that they are highly exposed and that they do not protect themselves.” Mira had earlier suggested that the study might not work as planned on health care workers in Europe and Australia, because they have access to personal protective equipment, guarding them from the contagion This suggestion by the French Doctors didn’t go down well as many tagged them racists and shortly after, #AfricansAreNotLabRats trended on Twitter. Didier Drogba wrote: “It is totally inconceivable we keep on cautioning this,”“Africa isn’t a testing lab. I would like to vividly denounce those demeaning, false and most of all deeply racist words.” Dennis Kiplimo @_itshark wrote: It makes no sense to start testing vaccines in a continent with just 7k+ cases, leaving behind their countries. Africa is not a lab and we are not Guinea pigs! Let them test their vaccines there. Sadly, our leaders are dumb enough to allow them. #AfricansAreNotLabRats ‘Tunde Omotoye @TundeTASH : It is very sad that as the world battles this pandemic, some shallow minded doctors in France believe the cure for the virus should first be tested in Africa. Racism just always rare its ugly head. #AfricansAreNotGuineaPigs #AfricansAreNotLabRats OMO NAIJA Crown @Cele__Audu: Whatever is best for humanity is not meant for Africans, whatever is not favorable and detrimental is meant for Africans. Super sad how low these People rate Africans. #AfricansAreNotLabRats Former Cameroon’s international Samuel Eto’o also joined the protest via instagram, he wrote, “Africa is not your playing ground,” https://www.news9naija.com.ng/2020/04/04/congo-becomes-first-african-country-to-accept-vaccine-testing/

The Minister of Aviation, Senator Hadi Sirika, Tuesday, announced suspension of ongoing rehabilitation work at the Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu. Senator Sirika, who made the announcement when he inspected the airport, said procurement was suspended because workers of the construction company, PW, handling the project left the site to be with their families owing to the Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19) pandemic ravaging the world. The Minister who was accompanied by the Managing Director of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), Capt. Hamisu Rabiu Yadudu, stated that “92-93 percent of the work at the Enugu airport has been completed”. According to him, “the work would have been completed in a few weeks time, but the workers left to be with their families in view of the social distancing protocol. “But considering that the construction workers have downed tools owing to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Federal Government hereby officially announces suspension of procurement”. He added that the remaining work at the airport will only require 15 days to be completed when the workers return to site. Maintaining that President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration was fully determined to complete the rehabilitation of Enugu airport to international standard before Easter, Senator Sirika explained that the circumstances the nation has found itself, regarding the escalating threat of COVID-19 globally, has made it impossible for the federal government to meet the deadline. The Minister pointed out that though the federal government had closed the Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu, alongside others, as one of the proactive measures to contain the spread of the deadly disease, such necessary decision couldn’t have affected the ongoing work at the airport if not that the company’s workers downed tools. Senator Sirika disclosed that the federal government introduced “glass mesh” in the Enugu airport runway to strengthen it and help in retaining the structure for a very long time, stressing that the new technology, before now, was only introduced at the Abuja airport. His words: “Many other issues like the Cargo for this airport, other infrastructure, the terminal building under rehabilitation including the air conditioner system in the new international airport being built by the Chinese and of course the perimeter fencing, drainage and water supply, among others, will all be completed in this airport”. He, therefore, commended Gov. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State, other South East Governors and stakeholders, for their sacrifice and commitment towards the rehabilitation of the Enugu airport and appealed for understanding on the part of the people of the Southeast geo-political zone, expressing hope that the issue of COVID-19 would be resolved soon. Also present at the event include the Enugu Airport Manager, Mrs. Cecilia Oguama, the Chairman, South East Governors’ Forum Airport Rehabilitation/Palliative Works Committee, Engr. Chris Okoye, Enugu State Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Engr. Greg Nnaji, his information counterpart, Nnanyelugo Chidi Aroh, among others. The acting spokesman of the Senate, Senator Godiya Akwashik in a statement in Abuja on Monday disclosed that senators have agreed to donate 50 percent of their salaries to help fight COVID-19 outbreak in Nigeria. He further stressed that the monthly donation of salaries would be sustained until the spread of the virus is fully contained in Nigeria and victims of the pandemic recovered.
