Look him in the eye and tell him you are sorry and explain why you Did what you did and give him a warm hug he will understand.
Apologise to your wife too.
Parenting is INTENTIONAL work and we have to learn not to to discipline in the heat of anger.
Going forward talk to him in a stern voice looking him in the eye and let him seat in naughty corner for two minutes.
