Arsenate: using some few matches to support your ground makes me laugh. The same 8th placed team in the EPL was battered by Sevilla (when a Cup is at stake). Athletico Madrid dumped PSV, the 2 FCBs ( all 3 won back to back league). This same ATM destroyed Chelsea ( UEFA Super Cup) few years ago. my questions, How many European Competitions had All the 20 TOP EPL teams won since last decade? How many World Class players left SPL for EPL and vice versa? How many trophies won by each National teams?..... the questions are many |

Politics / ACF : Attacks During Ramadan Proves Boko Haram Are Not Muslims by ArabaONE: 10:07am On Jul 06, 2015 |
The Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) has condemned the recent attacks by Boko Haram on Monguno, Kukawa and Maiduguri in Borno State, which left many people dead. A statement on Sunday in Kaduna by Muhammad Ibrahim, the National Publicity Secretary of the group, described the attacks and killings by the insurgent group as worrisome. According to ACF, it was deeply worried same way Nigerians were worried and disturbed with the recent and frequent attacks on villages and even states capital of Borno and Yobe by the Boko Haram insurgents. “The renewed direct attack on the people in the Monguno, Kukawa, Maiduguri and many villages in Borno, Yobe and Adamawa states is cruel, barbaric and condemnable especially in the holy month of Ramadan,” ACF noted. “This clearly shows that the Boko Haram insurgents are cults in form, character and operation as their claim to be Muslims is untenable. “Islam enjoined Muslims not to fight during the month of Ramadan no matter the provocation, let alone, attacking and killing innocent people for no just cause,’’ it said The ACF said that the activities of the insurgents posed a serious challenge to the military and other security agencies. It commended the decision of the Federal Government to move the military operational command from Abuja to Maiduguri and the establishment of the Multinational Military Joint Task-force. The group also lauded President Muhammadu Buhari’s visits to Niger and Chad and for soliciting the support of other foreign leaders at the G7 and African Union summits in the fight against Boko Haram. ACF further urged the security agencies to employ new strategy and intelligence gathering to smoke out the terrorists from their enclaves and hideouts. “With the adequate supply of equipment and other logistic support to the military, Nigerians expect to see offensive attack on the terrorists,’’ it said. ACF also urged communities in the affected areas to cooperate with the security agencies in the area of intelligence gathering. |
Politics / Lagos PDP Seeks Use Of Card Reader For Council Polls by ArabaONE: 8:56am On Apr 20, 2015 |
Lagos—The Lagos state chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has advocated the use of Smart Card Readers for the state’s local council elections just as it decried the delay in the conduct of the polls. In a statement by its State Publicity Secretary, Mr Taofik Gani, the PDP also lampooned the state government for failing to conduct the council polls long after the expiration of the tenure of the last elected council officials. According to the PDP, the composition and existence of the councils as they presently stand is illegal, unconstitutional and democracy. The party argued that “the administrators appointed by the state government for the council’s are not recognised nor accommodated in any of our governing laws. Section 7 of the 1999 Constitution as amended states that only democratically elected local government council is guaranteed.” “It is thus unexpected that a state like Lagos that says it progressive and democratic can continually disregard this constitutional provision and allow illegal, unconstitutional councils since October 2014 when the tenure of the last councils terminated”, the party stated. The PDP however called on the Lagos House of Assembly to make necessary amendments enable to the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission, LASIEC, accommodate the use of PVC and Card Reader to conduct the council polls. “We shall mobilise our votes and stand to protect it. We have no doubt that our soaring influence in lagos state will cut across at least 35 LCDAs and 250 Wards during the polls”, the party stated. Politics / 55 Members Were Killed In Rivers And 5 Other Things The APC Wants You To Know by ArabaONE: 12:03pm On Apr 07, 2015 |
The All Progressive Congress is still complaining about the political climate in Rivers state. On Sunday, the party accused security operatives and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of plotting to rig Saturday’s governorship and state assembly elections in favour of the candidate of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Nyesom Wike. According to the APC’s National Publicity Secretary of the APC, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, who called a news conference in Abuja, his party had enough evidence to implicate INEC and security operatives in Rivers in a ring aimed at rigging the elections in favour of the PDP. Here are our top takes from Mr Mohammed’s comments. The APC lacks ‘capacity’ to rig elections “We have lost 55 persons so far in the run-off to this election. The APC does not have the capacity nor the will to frustrate election. You all saw what happened in Rivers State during the last election.” The INEC in Rivers has a reading problem “If you did not see anything, at least you saw when the Returning Officer was asked to read the results, he could not, because it was not written by him.” Term of the day – the rule of law “Our party is a party that believes in the Rule of Law. They have the police, the Department of State Security (DSS) and INEC. They have these three groups which they are using to subvert democracy in Rivers State. Everyday, they are killing our people and nobody is being held responsible. The state is drenched in blood… “Last week, nine members of our party were killed in cold blood, while many others were injured, when armed thugs invaded Obrikom and Obor communities in Ogba/ Egbema/Ndoni local government of Rivers State. “These same thugs set ablaze the residence of Vincent Ogbagu, our candidate for the House of Assembly elections.” …and police action “Dozens of our members have been arrested on frivolous charges, just to put them away. At least, four persons were arrested just because they defected to our party. “APC members have been subjected to persistent harassment and intimidation across the state, using the Police in Rivers and the Zone Six in Calabar. Over 150 prominent members have been victims of this unprovoked persecution.” And, INEC was both culprit and witness “Unfortunately, the violence targeted at APC members in Rivers, especially during the last elections, was carried out in the full glare, and in most cases, with the connivance of INEC officials in the state. “Of course, it is needless to say that the collusion of INEC with the PDP and the police to pave the way for unbridled violence against APC members and supporters, and the subsequent rigging of the elections, was spearheaded by the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Ms. Gesilia Khan.” |
Health / Why Deaths From Heart Attack, Stroke Are Increasing by ArabaONE: 11:27am On Apr 07, 2015 |
As the global population rises over seven billion, a new report has shown that the number of deaths from hypertension, stroke, heart attacks and other circulatory diseases is on the rise, climbing from 12.3 million deaths to 17.3 million. The report also showed that efforts to prevent and treat cardiovascular diseases appear to be working as the rise in deaths is slower than the overall growth of the population. This is coming on the heels of a recent survey that shows that hypertension rates in Nigeria jumped from 11 per cent in 1997 to 40 per cent in 2013. 5 millon deaths in 13 years Globally, the number of deaths due to cardiovascular diseases increased by 41 percent between 1990 and 2013, climbing from 12.3 million deaths to 17.3 million deaths. Over the same period, death rates within specific age groups dropped by 39 percent, according to an analysis of data from 188 countries. Death rates from cardiovascular diseases were steady or fell in every region of the world except western sub-Saharan Africa, where the rates increased. The study, published last week in The New England Journal of Medicine, and the “Demographic and Epidemiologic Drivers of Global Cardiovascular Mortality,” was conducted by researchers led by the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation, IHME, at the University of Washington. South Asia, which includes India, experienced the largest jump in total deaths due to cardiovascular diseases, with 1.8 million more deaths in 2013 than in 1990 — an increase of 97 percent. In line with global trends, the increase in deaths from cardiovascular disease in India is driven by population growth and aging without the decrease in age-specific death rates found in many other countries. “This pattern is reversed to some extent in the Middle East and North Africa, which includes countries such as Saudi Arabia, Lebanon, and Jordan. In these regions, population growth and aging have been offset by a significant decline in age-specific death rates from cardiovascular disease, which has kept the increase in deaths to just fewer than 50 percent. “Taken together as a region, the United States and Canada were among a small number of places with no detectable change in the number of deaths from cardiovascular diseases, because aging and population growth balanced out declines in age-specific death rates. The same was true in southern Latin America, including Argentina and Chile, as well as Australia and New Zealand. “Two regions– central Europe and western Europe–have managed to do what their global peers have not by significantly reducing not only the death rates but also the total number of deaths from cardiovascular diseases, which fell by 5.2 percent and 12.8 percent, respectively, between 1990 and 2013. When looking at cardiovascular death rates, the high-income Asia Pacific region, which includes Japan, achieved the greatest decline globally. A persistent global threat: In the views of Assistant Professor at IHME from the Division of Cardiology at the University of Washington, Dr. Gregory Roth “Cardiovascular diseases will remain a global threat as the population grows and people age but the progress seen in some regions shows that reducing the toll of cardiovascular diseases is possible.” Researchers found that population aging contributed to an estimated 55 percent increase in cardiovascular disease deaths globally, and population growth contributed to a 25 percent increase. These demographic factors are not the only drivers behind the trend of increasing deaths and falling death rates. Changes in the epidemiology of cardiovascular diseases are another factor. Ischemic heart disease is both the leading cause of death worldwide and accounts for almost half of the increase in the number of cardiovascular deaths, despite a 34 percent decrease in age-specific death rates. Several other types of cardiovascular causes of death followed the same pattern, including aortic aneurysm, hypertensive heart diseases, and endocarditis, among others. Two conditions that were exceptions to this pattern are atrial fibrillation and peripheral vascular disease, for which deaths have jumped significantly since 1990, due to both higher death rates within specific age groups as well as general aging and population growth. Only rheumatic heart disease, which had a death rate decrease of more than 100 percent, had a lower number of total deaths in 2013 than in 1990; deaths fell by an estimated 27 percent over the 23-year period of the study. Researchers also examined whether wealthier countries fared better than lower-income countries when it comes to cardiovascular deaths and found there was not a strong correlation between income per capita and lower age-specific death rates. The dramatic improvement in the death rates seen in some regions was attributed to prevention and treatment of cardiovascular diseases, in part by reducing risk factors including smoking. Primary care management of other risk factors for cardiovascular diseases, such as elevated blood pressure and blood sugar, are also important. IHME Director, Dr. Christopher Murray however said: “Addressing the range of factors that contribute to cardiovascular disease will help ensure that fewer people around the world die from it prematurely. Investments and policies aimed at targeting preventable risk factors can reduce the impact of cardiovascular disease.” Jump in rates: Research shows that hypertension rates jumped from 11 per cent in 1997 to 40 per cent in 2013. A World Cardiology study conducted in Oyo, Katsina, Kwara and Enugu states, shows that estimates that the prevalence of people living with hypertension is about 27 per cent in Katsina, 36.6 per cent in Ilorin, 20.8 per cent in Ibadan rural, 46.6 per cent in Enugu rural. Speaking on the issue, Emeritus Professor of Medicine at the University of Ibadan, Oyo State, Oladipo Akinkugbe, noted that unmanaged and undetected hypertension or high blood pressure was the major reason why more Nigerians were suffering and dying of stroke, heart disease and chronic kidney failure. “The lifestyle and diet of the average Nigerian has changed. We eat more processed foods than ever, yet we are the ones suffering from the diseases they cause because of our genes,” Akinkugbe lamented. High blood pressure In the views of Associate Professor of Medicine, College of Medicine, University of Lagos, Dr. Amam Mbakwem, Nigerians suffer from the effects of high blood pressure due to ignorance. Ignorance: Mbakwem, a cardiologist, argued that more than 60 per cent of Nigerians, who are hypertensive, do not know they have high blood pressure. Her words: “Many Nigerians with heart diseases do not know that they have high blood pressure till their hearts start failing. They wait for symptoms before they go for check up, which is deadly. If you have high blood pressure and you don’t know, by the time you are feeling dizzy or weak or breathless in the morning, some organs, such as the kidney and the liver, may have been damaged. “We are not just worried that the number of hypertensive patients is going up. We are more worried that Nigerians do not know how to manage it. The statistics has been going up in the last 15 years, yet there is no special plan to check it. High blood pressure is fatal to the heart, kidney and brain when left unmanaged.” Recent surveys show that heart and cardiovascular diseases are the leading causes of death in the world. Findings show that death rates are higher generally in developing countries, including Nigeria due to the late detection of cases and other risk factors such as high cholesterol, high blood pressure and smoking; diabetes, obesity and sedentary living. Music/Radio / NBC On Lil Kesh's 'shoki': Song Not Banned, Advised Not To Play Vulgar Version by ArabaONE: 4:53pm On Sep 19, 2014 |
In response to reports which have circulated the media, the Nigerian Broadcasting Commission (NBC) have revealed that they did not ban the hit song, Shoki By Lil Kesh. Media reports had within the past two days revealed that airplay restrictions have been placed on the song » , drawing a huge outcry over the move. But the NBC have come out in a series of tweets to reveal it as untrue. According to the official twitter handle » , they specifically mentioned that the song was not banned, but a radio station was restricted from playing a club version during 'Family Time”, that is the period when children have access to all media. In their word: “We at the National Broadcasting Commission can confirm there was no such ban. A club version of the song cannot be played on radio. The club version contains vulgar lyrics which was played around 9am which is considered as “family time”. The station that aired the club version was asked to play only a suitable broadcast version of the song. During these times children are exposed to all media & it is the NBC’s duty to protect the broadcast rights of children. "There is a broadcast code to follow by every broadcast station and this station failed to comply. This said station has been sanctioned for playing a club version during family time. We at the NBC did not ban “Shoki”- by Lil Kesh. We simply asked the suitable broadcast version to be played on the radio." |

Celebrities / Why I Love To Expose My bosoms – Emma Nyra by ArabaONE: 3:18pm On Sep 16, 2014 |
In a recent chat with Encomium magazine, singer, Emma Nyra disclosed the reason she always reveals her boobs in videos and at events. “It’s not that I flaunt them but part of your selling point as a female artist is your body, your voice, your look, your hair, everything. Chidinma’s lack of hair is her selling point, you understand. Each part of you is your selling point,” she said. She was further asked why she finds it interesting to show it off even when they are not sizable, she added: “Its confidence, you understand. Somebody like Toolz for example, her selling point is her body. Before her voice, it’s her body. As a woman, her own packaging is always different. I have grown up to be comfortable with the way the skin is because, I have accepted the fact that I can’t change it. I have to accept the way I am. Men don’t look at me, the women look at women. If I go out with or without makeup, a man will not notice. But if I go out and I see a woman, she will say Emma Nyra, you are looking different from how I see you on TV. She would comment on everything to my eyebrow but a man won’t look that deep unless he is into fashion and everything. I have learnt to accept myself. If you are not confident about yourself, people won’t buy your brand” she added. When asked what her standing was as regards bleaching the skin, Emma explained thus; “I grew up with white people and I noticed that white people tan. They wanted to look like me whereas I wanted to look like them while growing up because I wanted to belong. This bleaching thing, Indians do it too, even Americans do it. It’s been so bad lately because the society’s perception of beauty has to do with it. The lighter the better, whereas, in Europe, the darker the better. Dark hair, dark skin, it’s a kind of class. That’s how they do their own class system. Our own is just, we have grown up watching aunties bleach. When I first came to Nigeria, I went to a store and I couldn’t find a regular cream, all I saw was whitening. I went to Dubai, the same thing. Indians and Arabs, they bleach. I am more concerned with clear skin, not light or dark or whatever because I grew up seeing girls wanting to be dark. So it didn’t affect me that way. I don’t support bleaching; I don’t think its right. Some people wear padded bra, some wear padded bum. As a woman, you can choose whatever you want. You can change your nose, your breast, anything. But as for bleaching, because of the long term effect, I don’t think it’s good for you”

Education / Why 69% Of Students Failed WASSCE by ArabaONE: 4:08am On Aug 23, 2014 |
BY Laju Arenyeka & Favour Anthony About 69% of Nigerian students who wrote the last West African Secondary School Certificate Examinations, WASSCE, failed. If this statistic is anything to judge the education sector by, it would mean that only about three out of ten students currently in the nation’s secondary schools will be qualified for the tertiary level at the end of their secondary school careers. It would also mean that seven out of ten Nigerian students are unqualified to leave secondary school after six years. Who is to blame for this dismal performance, and inadvertently the overall failure of the education sector? To answer this question, Vanguard School Life, VSL, first turned to the students. A student from Command Day Secondary School who failed English Language told our reporters: ‘The time given was too short, and as a result of this, I didn’t finish answering the questions.’ The student, who did not want her name in print, had hoped to rely on her friends to give answers to questions she didn’t know. However, this was not possible. ‘The invigilators were too strict,’ she said, ‘so I didn’t have the opportunity to ask my friends for answers I didn’t know.’’ She wasn’t the only one counting on examination malpractice. Another student, Tobi Isaac (not real name), who failed Mathematics, said he did not like the subject and knew that he was going to fail even before the examinations began. He said: ‘I don’t like Maths, and I also dislike my teacher, so, I didn’t bother to prepare, because I already knew I would fail Maths before writing the exams. That is why I paid someone to provide me with the answers; but I was disappointed, it turned out that the person was not legitimate.’ Another candidate who also preferred to remain anonymous told VSL, “I don’t have any plans to school in Nigeria; that is why I did not take the exams seriously. I want to attend a private school abroad and that just requires a lot of money.’ Yet another candidate who failed the examinations spoke to our reporters. He blamed his failure on his addiction to social media. He said: ‘I was really distracted by social media. I was always fond of my phone. Even a day before examinations when some of my friends were reading, I was busy with BBM and Instagram.” Recall that a total of 529,425 candidates, representing a meagre 31.28 per cent, obtained credits in five subjects and above, including English Language and Mathematics. When compared to the 2012 and 2013 May/June WASSCE results, there was marginal decline in the performance of candidates as 38.81 per cent was recorded in 2012 and 36.57 per cent in 2013. Mr. Mark Okoh, Principal of Caro Favoured College in Lagos, gives reasons for this decline. ‘There are a lot of combined factors responsible for this’ he said, ‘there was less commitment on the part of the Government, teachers, as well as students. Last year, all hands were on deck to ensure that the performance was better. I guess everyone relaxed this year because of the performance of last year. Another issue is the fact that the average Nigerian student reads for examinations. Even when the school calendar is running, students do not study. They wait till exams are around the corner and begin the fire brigade approach.’ For the Education Rights Camaign, ERC, the blame should be placed solely at the feet of the Government. In a Press statement signed by its National Coordinator, Mr. Hassan Soweto, the ERC said: ‘Far from being the fault of the individual candidates, this disastrous result is a reflection of the failure of the anti-poor and capitalist neo-liberal policies of education underfunding and commercialization by government at all levels in the country. Government at all levels has pursued a relentless policy of starving public education funds such that public primary and secondary schools across the country have become devastated with little or no teaching infrastructures such that no useful learning is taking place.’ Recall that a member of the House of Representatives, Chief Yomi Ogunnusi, even traced the poor performance to erratic power supply in the country. Ogunnusi, who represents Ifako-Ijiaye constituency in Lagos, said that unstable power supply in the country was disincentive to learning, adding that it had discouraged students from studying hard. The buck is now being passed on from power to social media, from Government to students, but the truth remains that if all stakeholders do not begin to take responsibility immediately, another blame game will begin when the next WASSCE results are released. |
