Politics / Eleka To FG: Apply Science-based Technology To Address Poverty, Corruption by arapaja: 3:52pm On Nov 05, 2021
*

Former deputy governor of Ekiti State, Professor Kolapo Olusola Eleka, on Friday, called on the Federal Government to apply science-based technology to address critical problems of poverty, corruption, energy needs and other human problems in the nation.

This was as he noted that the differential in the application of science and technology to solving human problems, and to developing new processes and products has been identified to be the cause of continual widening gap between the rich and the poor countries.

Eleka, who gave this admonition while delivering a paper at the first annual lecture of School of Physical Sciences and 40th Anniversary of Federal University of Technology, Akure, noted that Science-based technology comes in as one of the leading factors of production in the emerging global economy in addition to other factors such as knowledge, creativity and innovation.

He said: “Every nation desires to be at peace and compete effectively in the emerging global marketplace. This can only be achieved if such a nation sets out to prioritize the adequate strengthening of its existing research and development centres and technology development institutions with the aim of encouraging and supporting the shift towards adoption and increased use of modern technological approaches.”

In his paper themed: ‘Energy and industrial development: panacea to poverty and insecurity challenges’, He emphasised that no nation can grow beyond its scientific and technological advancements, saying that Nigeria is not an exemption.

“Science and technology play a vital role in skill acquisition, job and wealth creation, improvement in the quality of life and industrial development of any nation.

“They not only bring in advances that lead to healthier, longer, wealthier and more productive lives, they are key ingredients to solving challenges of poverty alleviation and economic development challenges that we currently face and are likely to face in the future,” Eleka added.

He bemoaned the mental perception of Nigerian leaders on science and technology which, according to him, “they see it as consumable items and not something that should be created.”

“Nigeria as a nation has brilliant people that are performing feats all over the world except in Nigeria. Why? This is because our government and the leaders fail to provide for them the necessary modern technological tools and equipment needed for excellent performance in our research centres and institutions.

“It is well-known fact that lack of appropriate and modern equipment limits breakthrough in research performance. The system is therefore caught up with the left-behind syndrome. The economy subsequently begins and continues to decline. This is the unfortunate story in Nigeria; hence the increasing spate of poverty and incidences of crime which are symptoms of deprivation and the lack of user engagement of young people in most cases,” Eleka explained.

Speaking on energy, he said its development over the years is attributed to advances in science and technology, adding that it is a key source of economic growth as many production and consumption activities involve energy as basic input.

Eleka, however, urged Nigerian leaders to harness the abundant renewable energy sources, which the country is endowed with to meet its present and future needs, adding that energy is one of the most important inputs for economic development, poverty eradication and security of any nation.

He concluded that the government at all levels should invest heavily in science and technology, encourage cutting-edge research in this sector and holistically implement the products of the Research and Development effort.

Politics / Nnamdi Kanu’s Trial: Senator Ubah, Anambra YPP Guber Candidate Barred From Court by arapaja: 8:32pm On Oct 21, 2021
Nnamdi Kanu’s Trial: Senator Ubah, Anambra YPP Guber Candidate Barred From Court Room.

The Governorship Candidate of the Young Progressives Party (YPP) and Senator representing Anambra South Senatorial District of Anambra state, Senator Ifeanyi Patrick Ubah, was this morning barred by angry looking security men at the court in Abuja during the court appearance of the leader of the Indegenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.

Senator Ubah after trekking for more than two kilometres from the barricade to the court was refused entry into the premises and asked to stay away from the area even after identifying himself properly as a serving senator of the federal republic of Nigeria.

It was also reported that, businesses within the areas of the court was shutdown, in anticipation that angry Nigerians who are not happy with the obvious intimidation and harassment of Igbo race may rise up against government’s underhand policies and persecution of the south east region.

Even the lawyers of the supposed defender, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu was not spared in the harassment and intimidation of Igbo leaders who went to the court in solidarity with the IPoB leader.

The action of the police and other security agents in the court today is a clear sign that Nigeria is at war with its citizens.

#EndSARS: Nigerians Will Not End Agitation Until FG Addresses Insecurity, Unemployment - Eleka

... says incessant protests sign of failed government

A chieftain of the PDP and the former Deputy Governor of Ekiti State has urged Buhari's government to address the underpinning issues that led to the nationwide EndSars protest in October last year, stressing that uproar across the country will persist if the government turns deaf ears to the demands of the protesters.

In a statement released by Prof. Kolapo Olusola-Eleka through his Media Aide, Eleka said since Nigeria was a product of negotiation, and a compartment of different ethnic groups, leaders should show more interest in a peaceful resolution to crises than coercion of protesters.

In his words: "It is a year that some youths took to the street massively to condemn the excesses of Nigeria Security Agencies most especially the SARS on innocent Nigerians. Their agitation to demand proactive governance that will be of immense value to all Nigerians should be addressed.

"We have seen in various countries in the Middle East how uprising led to change of government on a large scale of frustration of citizens and spurious governmental policies, which had negative effect on their economy and socio-political system. Of course, every state is enmeshed in her peculiarities; the Nigerian government should address the tremendous increase in inflation and unemployment in the country.

"Within the last 6 years of All Progressive Congress under the leadership of President Buhari, Nigeria had witnessed agitations, ranging from Yoruba Nation protest, IPOB and even threat from the North to secede from Nigeria. All these put together are testaments to a fragile government in power, coupled with a party that is totally alien to Nigerians.

"As we remember those who were brutally incarcerated by the Nigerian Security today, it is a call to the federal government to address the spate of insecurity in Nigeria, dwindling economy, high rate of unemployment and uncontrollable inflation of goods within the last 6 years."

Eleka concluded that Nigerians will never forget the EndSars protest in the history of the nation.

Politics / PDP Convention: IPN Urges Delegates To Affirm Anyanwu's Nomination by arapaja: 2:03pm On Oct 18, 2021
Press Release

17/10/2021

We the Indigenous People of Nigeria (IPN) heartily congratulates the Southeast caucus of the Peoples Democratic Party for coming out with unanimous position and ensuring clearly that a consensus candidate, in the person of Senator Samuel Nnaemeka Anyawu, emerges as the next National Secretary of the party.

It is a good omen and shows that the Peoples Democratic Party is listening to the yearnings of the Nigerian People, and we hope that they will continue in this direction.

We also clearly observe that they are taking conscious steps to ensure that all Nigerians are captured in their zoning arrangement of the national offices in the party. This is commendable, and reason the Indigenous People of Nigeria comes out with this position.

We joyfully congratulate Senator Samuel Anyanwu on his choice as consensus candidate, and we urge leaders of the party from other geopolitical zones and states to ensure that the choice of Senator Anyanwu as the nominee for the position of National Secretary is affirmed unanimously at the National Convention of the party.

The reason we are doing this is to promote oneness and peace that is almost lacking in our country today.

We equally urge the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC) to emulate the People's Democratic Party (PDP), by ensuring that all Nigerians are giving a sense of belonging and importance in the affairs of our beloved country. Therefore, the issue of zoning and ensuring inclusivity in all the offices at the party and government captures the interest of all the Nigerian peoples.

This statement is important because we are happy and elated by the position of the PDP.

We wish Senator Anyanwu, and indeed the Peoples Democratic Party, all the best.

Signed:
Mazi Nnamdi Iroegbu
Convener: Indigenous People of Nigeria (IPN)

Politics / N500 Million Fraud: You Cannot Lead PDP, Youth Group Tells Professor Jerry Gana by arapaja: 10:13am On Oct 12, 2021
N500 Million Fraud Allegation: You Cannot Lead PDP, Youth Group Tells Professor Jerry Gana...Asks Him To Resolve the Matter with Polaris Bank.

The Peoples Democratic Party Northern Youth Alliance for Good Governance (PDPNYAGG) had called on the former Minister of Information, Professor Jerry Gana, to settle all issues relating to his involvement in the fraudulent N500 Million debt owed Polaris Bank when he was chairman of Presidential Fundraising Committee in 2014.

The Group in a statement signed by its National Coordinator, Dr Inuwa Yunusa in Minna, Niger State, said, Professor Gana, as Chairman of the PDP Presidential Fund Raising Committee, used his company, “Mind Base Konsult” as a financial consultant to borrow N500 Million from Skye Bank Plc, now Polaris Bank but could not account for it.

According to Dr Yunusa, Professor Gana did not follow due process in obtaining the unpaid loan, in line with the constitution of the PDP in section 53(1), adding that the procedures were never subjected to the PDP’s internal financial mechanism.

“Professor Jerry Gana, as Chairman of Presidential Fund Raising Committee in 2014 borrowed N500 million from the then Skye Bank Plc, now Polaris Bank, to fund a fundraising committee that could not even raise money to settle what he borrowed. The annoying part is that he did not follow due process. As we speak to you, the bank placed a garnishee order on a PDP account in Polaris Bank because of Professor Gana’s misdemeanour,”- Dr Inuwa Yunusa said.

The Group called on party leaders nationwide, especially in the north, to disregard any attempt by Professor Gana on becoming the National Chairman of the party, saying that such a person at the helm of affairs will spell doom for the PDP.

“Our party members may wish to know that Professor Gana’s company, Mind Base Konsults had obtained an interlocutory order from a court, baring the PDP from operating its account in Polaris Bank even when the party does not know how and when Professor Gana borrowed the N500 million. Is that the kind of person you want to manage the affairs of the party?”

The Group is asking the former minister of information to perish the thought of becoming the party’s national chairman; instead, the Group urged Professor Gana to settle the matter with the party out of court as ordered by the court.
