Anambra1stSonTV: Bishop J. Shanahan
Joseph Shanahan He was given a “second burial”. The solemn but joyous ceremony was performed only for the paramount chief , to ensure that his great spirit would always remain with the people, protecting them and guiding them as he had done in Life.
Bishop Shanahan (1871 – 1943) of Southern Nigeria was the only non-Igbo to be afforded this honour. His bones were disinterred and in 1955 were Laid to rest in Onitsha cathedral in the heart of the land of the lgbos. Who was this man so beloved and honoured?
Joseph Shanahan was born, the third of ten children of a poor farm labourer in Co. Tipperary, Ireland. His uncle, Pat Walsh, who lived with the Shanahans, left the home in Gortnalaura in 1875 to join the congregation of the Holy Ghost, now called the Spiritans. It was an old French religious order recently given a new lease of life by the dynamic Francis Libermann, a convert from Judaism whose special ambition was to bring the good news of Christ to the peoples of Equatorial Africa.
In 1886 young Joe followed his uncle to France where he joined the Spiritans and began his studies for the priesthood. He was ordained a priest in 1900. In October 1902 his life’s dream was fulfilled. He was on a boat bound for Nigeria. Thirty five days later he arrived in Onitsha, a name that would be forever linked with his own.
Shanahan joined a group of French Spiritans who had arrived in Eastern Nigeria seventeen years previously.
From the very beginning Shanahan made a big impact. He was big, strong, handsome. He was friendly, kind, energetic. The lgbo people couldn’t but admire and love him. And he served them with every ounce of his being until he returned in 1932. He had served for thirty years, twenty five as leader of the mission. Few Europeans could survive more than a decade in Nigeria where conditions were very primitive at that time.
His life is one of the great success stories of missionary history. He was a truly charismatic figure, a man of exceptional courage and vision. He travelled the country on foot, by bicycle, by canoe. He walked boldly in areas where no white man had set foot before. He saw the importance of education and built up a huge network of schools.
He recruited missionary priests, brothers, sisters and lay persons for Southern Nigeria. He founded one religious order and was the inspiration behind the setting up of five others.
As is the case for all saints, he suffered greatly. He was rejected by his mission and forced into an unwanted and early retirement. He was rejected by the missionary order of sisters he founded in lreland He spent his final years in exile from his beloved Igbos, years of frustration false accusations and loneliness.
Today he is seen as a luminary of the Church and of the Spiritans, a wonderful model for all who are called to be missionaries. Quite inspiring. His massive educational strategies lifted the Igbos alot... |
Politics › Re: FOREX Crisis: Raid On BDCs Ill-Advised, Wrongly-Directed - Peter Obi by archangel1(m): 8:05am On Feb 27, 2024 |
omohayek: And how exactly do the following empty generalities constitute "constructive criticism" and a "solution" to anything?
It's merely pointing out the obvious to say that the Nigerian economy suffers from low productivity. The real question is how to increase said productivity, not merely pointing out the need to do so, and here Peter Obi has nothing to say on the matter. Not once has Obi offered any concrete policy proposals in this direction, just vague moral posturing.
The same is true of his talk of "fighting corruption". Well, duh! Of course corruption is bad! Of course it needs to be fought! But does Obi offer any substantive proposals as to how to do a better job of that than has been the case in Nigeria for the last 60 years? Of course not! Why are we supposed to treat the man as if he were some sort of prophet for simply stating what anyone with eyes can see?
The ironic thing here is that, like the proverbial broken clock which is right twice a day, Peter Obi is actually correct in his criticism of the EFCC's scapegoating of the BDC. Such actions do nothing to solve the underlying causes of Nigeria's runaway inflation (namely loose monetary policy by the CBN and money-printing by the FG), while undermining investor confidence in the government's respect for markets and the rule of law, driving away the very foreign investment the country so badly needs. The tragedy is that Obi, in his unwillingness (or inability) to do more than offer empty but nice-sounding generalities as "constructive" advice, gives no indication that he would have fared any better at tackling Nigeria's problems if he were at the helm. He is like the proverbial backseat-driver who prattles on as if he were Lewis Hamilton, safe in the knowledge that his inflated self-opinion will never be put to the test. Your so long a letter doesn't major up . Very pointless. Simply put, what you just termed as 'generalities' blended with your long rendition of English grammar, are what this administration ought had undertaken vigorously ab initio-as a trajectory to economic revamping over the months - amidst avalanche of Policy somersaults . And that is what PO is passionately pointing out. If you are looking for specific solution proffering from opposition, my man, you are still dreaming . |

AllenSpencer: Partnership my foot!
Has all public schools in Anambra been upgraded to how a school should look? Do Anambra schools have a transport system? Are they all IT complaint?
And here we have a Governor partnering with missionary schools. Are that his primary responsibilities?
Despite the schools not remitting taxes to the state, it is still being a burden on state tax payers.
Hello! It’s not done that way ! Anambra od lacking many things, and missionary schools are not in first one thousand of it. Majority of the Anambra public schools today are in the hands of the missionaries. That's informed the cash transfer you saw.. Suffice it to say that The missionaries have their own set of private schools different from these. The said schools in contention were hitherto missionary schools which were taken forcefully by government in the 70's.. After the return, Government of Anambra State decides to run a partnership that would sustain the said schools. Today, government owned schools are comparably minimal in numbers.. Mine is to analyze their strategies and scheme of things in educational sector... Perhaps, it could had been working for them over the years.... Am not preoccupied with how they run their schools, after all the other states that adopted your strategies how far? Please, pass your theories and vexation to them if you are not contented.... Nigerian Government; both at the center and regional levels, has serious problems in school management. The idea of isolating one state in your criticism as if others were doing well was what Pigued my curiosity... It is a Nigerian factor. Every states are at the liberty to run their educational facilities the way they deemed fit, either through direct government management or partnership.... That's is the situation... Am not insinuating that their strategies are perfect. |

AllenSpencer: State Governor that cannot directly invest into education, and have to give to clergymen!
Moreover!, are the missionary schools the responsibility of Anambra State Government? Don't they have quarters that they source funds from!
Anambra state primary and tertiary educational system is in shambles and deteriorating, and here we have a state governor donating billions to missionary schools through clergymen.
In 2023, when other state governor's are directly investing into infrastructure, healthcare and education, and all Anambra state governor can come-up with is "DONATION" Ignorance is a disease. The fund is not meant for all missionary schools but the very ones returned to the missionaries by the Peter Obi government.... This is a continuum and partnership policy to sustain the said schools... Be informed.. |

So, I run the program with then in the year 2017/ 2019. I completed my HND at federal polytechnic ilaro, and I ought to be in service already.
The problem now is I went to the jamb office in February to do my regularization, I meet with the jamb officer and she said my matric number had been used for another student, I thought she made a mistake while typing my matric number...
So, I brought out my statement of result to show but it was still the same thing.
I went back to owu tech to made a complaint, I was told to write a letter and I attached a copy of my statement of result to that letter.
Since February now there ain't been any solution, I meet with the rector and he said they're working it till now from February. I really wish to go with the batch B for the nysc.

oikirodah: Faces of the New Tinubu Administration; Bayo Onanuga and the Challenges to Come
By Osigwe Omo-Ikirodah
Elections have been won and lost, and Nigerians have returned to reality in preparation for the inauguration of the incoming administration on May 29th. President-elect Asiwaju Bola Ahmed has returned to the country, fully prepared to take over from President Muhammadu Buhari.
It was never an easy task for Tinubu, as the battle was fiercely fought on the internet, with a desperate opposition deploying all of their arsenals against the APC presidential candidate, all with the sole purpose of not only defaming his personality but also attempting to halt his every progressive move towards the presidency.
Tinubu has been the most denigrated, accused, and mentally tortured candidate in the history of electoral campaigns.
It got so bad that the President-elect declared he was no longer on social media due to the possibility of having high blood pressure as a result of the distorted facts about his personality flying around the internet, which happens to be the centre of communication worldwide.
Therefore, serving as the President-elect's spokesperson is not an easy job. You run the danger of offending young folks who have no concept of their heritage and dealing with children who don't have old men's pictures in their living rooms.
They not only start or stop with nasty statements about your personality both on INTERNET AND OUTERNET, they go as far as trying to knock down anything related with your legacy and growth, even family ties are not left out, they are CYBER and COMMUNITY bullies who spare no victim.
So it was an intriguing surprise to see Mr Bayo Onanuga announced as the DG of the media directorate at the APC 2023 Presidential Campaign Council; how can this quintessential, amiable, and straight-forward personality handle such a directorate where the opposition has proliferated the space with horrible, doctored, and twisted narratives against Tinubu?
However, you know say no be as body dey scratch person dem dey scratch am, everybody no fit dey crazy at the same moment. You see, Bayo Onanuga is an excellent journalist.
He co-founded TheNews Magazine and was appointed managing director of the News Agency of Nigeria by President Muhammadu Buhari in May 2016. Prior to that, he was the CEO and editor-in-chief of PM News and TheNEWS magazine.
Thus, we were unaware that Tinubu was once again selecting the best candidates.
However, Bayo set the bar for how to deal with the Nattering Nitwits—as many of us now refer to them—by strictly upholding professional ethics, concentrating his communication on facts and figures, and outwitting them at their own game.
Bayo not only carried out his duties with utmost politeness and professionalism, but he was also well above board, as Davido would say,
"Over dem all ..If dem wan turn Goliath I be David for life...Oluwa dey my side Over dem all"
In other words, Bayo Onanuga never led a FEEDER squad; instead, it was a CHAMPIONS LEAGUE PRO-MAX team. His accuracy at target is highly noteworthy, and Bayo has been assigned the media coordinator for the inauguration, which once more demonstrates Tinubu's faith in him.
These are some of the faces we will see in the incoming administration, faces of Nigerians who have paid their dues through time, faces of patriot Nigerians determined to restore Nigerians' yearning for a renewed HOPE.
Osigwe Omo-Ikirodah, Member of the APC 2023 Presidential Campaign Council, Editor in Chief of iReporteronline, and Chairman/CEO of Bush Radio Academy, writes in from Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory. https://ireporteronline.com.ng/blog/faces-of-the-new-tinubu-administration-bayo-onanuga-and-the-challenges-to-come/ all voracious media practitioners have positioned themselves for relevance and seeming appointments within this pre inauguration season hence , expect chest beating and kindergaten piece of this kind hovering the media... |
