An abrupt and terse ending to an interestingly 'short' narrative (are u into Hermingway? lol).

This obviously neutral & objective take (presume u r s/eastern from d möniker) is as impressive as d lucid chronology u've just rendered. Frankly, though only in retrospect, i wish Achebe had remained truer to d intellectual he was indisputably more of than lending such disproportionate value to d secessionist move- warlords/politicians always couch their personal aspirations in words that tug @ d intellectual's heartstrings albeit fatally, eventually (ask d intellectuals who turned Nazi sympathizers/converts; of course, in retrospect again).

I think a somewhat visceral, even pathological, distrust of political power uniquely defines Soyinka- a consistent trait i drew from reading him (and Achebe) up on Wikipedia .

Still, how deeply could man think his ways past wiles that lurk in d present and his decision/judgement still be justified, viewed back later from d future? But hindsight remains ever 20/20 in its eternal tyranny.

Another rare provoking insight to stumble on in this forum though. Nice job OP. Thanks

Long time coming. Another seed of social unrest building up in Nig with plunging FX, profligacy, poor planning & large restive unemployed demographic. Lord have mercy.

Dats out of the context here, jst give me your advices
@Marcel
lol. Don't get red-faced now ;-) It's all good still.

Seriously, think it's an otherwise deep topic we shouldn't leave untreated cos of op's credibility.
Have personally chosen to beat any other to it comes to introducing my unborn son to X & its subtleties, just as Colin Powell did with his. Hopin the wife, still out there, succeeds wit d daughter(s) the woman way. What matters is the kids coming out still well adjusted & emotionally balanced after d hormonally-charged phase (learnt adolescent turbulence starts earlier now or is it biology evolvin to a more se*x*uall.y charged sex-obsessed culture ) so they can make better choices & dodge the ever present pitfalls that only work against their future odds. It'a tough life. I expect parenting won't b a cakewalk. Fingers crossed.

Op: I like your sense of humour. I knew Japan would top the list. One has to visit Tokyo for just a day to see how technologically advanced Japan is. With that out of the way, I think it's unfair India was not given a mention. Indian and China should both be at #10. After all India just sent a space mission to the moon on its first attempt -- something no other nation has achieved.
True indeed per India. Nice take still ,@ OP

NaLaugh: You have failed to mention the number one mind control:

BEWBIES!! aka "bobbie" aka "front" aka "tatas" aka "manchester" aka "oyon" aka "Gazonkas"

aka "pillow" aka "jugs" aka "bee stings" aka "airbags" aka "knockas" aka "chihuahuas"

aka "hooters" aka "milk factory" aka "melons" aka "chi chis" aka "Bazookas"

..and finally aka "bosoms" (as preferred by Seun's censor bot)

cool
Lol :-) . By all means, let this form be perpetuated by the 'controllers', but enhanced with an option for us to decide if she ends up knocked up or not :-) . But then, 'their' controls never had our best interests in mind. Pun very much intended.

@OP Agreed but let's seriously wind down the consumerist culture currently gone awry, social pressures notwithstanding and stop shirking responsibilities spinning fancy consp. theories.

Speaking of social pressures, what use is groupthink if it ends us more enslaved by our insecurities that it subtly feeds. Let's stop pleasing the crowd when we can't afford to or if it runs counter to convictions. Doing so ACTUALLY hurts nobody. Life is made for Man and not Man for life
Btw, by all means, avoid financial traps no matter what lifestyle being pursued. Enuff of these theories.
CultureRe: 13 Things To Remember When Life Gets Rough by Areacode213: 6:35pm On Aug 16, 2014
Henryk Kasperczak, a football coach, once said he exercised himself towards "no hysteria in bad times and no euphoria in swell times".
As a coach, he should know.
Not implying to be always stiff-upper-lip but to fight to keep a level head always & remembering to build rather than getting carried away in good times.
Feels really lucky that part of the interview stuck. So instructive.
LiteratureRe: A Thread For Mario Puzo's'the Godfather' Fans. by Areacode213: 7:32pm On Aug 13, 2014
A torrid read of a novel handed me by an elder brother on a friday evening. Knew no peace of mind till the last page on sunday night, skipping meals & even taking it to church :-) . A weekend to remember.
The Don's sudden death that forced the family enterprise abruptly on a reluctant neophyte was enough shock to drop the novel but i think it's a measure of Mario Puzo's storytelling that the heat instead simply, and credibly, built up from here wit d Don having drilled Michael & Clemenza well enough to reassert the family through a broad plan that unfolded over the coming months with clockwork precision and a bit of luck, of course.
Another 'landmark' novel of teen days along with stuffs like A Stone for Danny Fisher (Harold R.)

His dying words: 'Life is beautiful' :-)

FamilyRe: false reasons why some people believe feminists hate men by Areacode213:
Like Fourier & Laplace both rescued an area of maths and made the unwieldy become tractable & hence solvable, Betty Friedan cannily resolved this confusion amidst the din of women's lib and 'free love' movement in 'The Feminine Mystique' viz:

Feminism <> Femininity

Both Fs are not equal or same Be free to b as feminist as you choose but don't lose sight of d more primordial other F- characteristic, else you risk coming off unduly as with a chip on the shoulder.

Obviously, albeit much clearer over the last century, it's manifest that the male brain (male/female minds differ like two sides of a coin, i think) is no more potent than the female's (skip Lawrence Summers' slip) as the 'artificial' edge conferred on the male by ages of protective paternalism get steadily & irrevocably eroded by unintended social consequences of technological evolution, wars and commerce.
Feminists only risk needlessly burning their fingers by trying to rush the evolution their way. Female femininity is not weakness; stop undercuttin the feminism argument by first gradually quitting the 'bouncing baby boy' obsession as mothers or well-wishers- a baby daughter can reach as far as she desires on a level field. Still in doubt? Ok, try distilling Gloria Steinem, Rosie the Riveter, Anne-Marie Slaughter, Maureen Dowd, Sheryl Sandberg, Janet Yellen & of course, Obi Ezekwesili to name a few.

Start to 'lean in' from the homefront by stopping to abet the raising of unwitting barriers against the 'daughter'. The horse galloped out of the barn aeons ago circa when reliable firemaking was invented. :-)

Men and women do not differ qualitatively per intellectual potency, let's instead focus effort on eliminating the social barrier unconsciously stacked against the girl right from the womb, monthly menstrual stresses notwithstanding.

Enjoy, not fight, the ladies-first chilvaries as far as he 'scores' not because you 'fell' but consented.

Recall that men 'protect' women/feminists, not from other women/feminists, but other men- speak of testoterone and its discontents/follies.

But thankfully, brain increasingly rules over brawn.

DISCLOSURE: I'm a typical testo-driven male labouring nonstop for that singular front-and-centre goal regarding the female. :-)
SportsRe: Response To The Hate Speech On Football By Ann Coulter by Areacode213: 6:33pm On Jun 29, 2014
Ada Nri1: She's also very bitter, cynical, divisive and perpetually callous.

I wonder what made her that way. I shudder with pity for her when I read some of her articles.
Lol. Playing to type again. Ann Coulter couldn't ever miss the obvious World Cup chance to portray herself as the conservative queen of d culture wars. Football must seem to her as being 'sissy & unAmerican'
Not content with half-baked politics & her twisted 'take America back' crusade against 'bleeding heart' liberals, she had to unwittingly stick out her neck further into soccer which she's apparently clueless about, broadcasting her utter ignorance round the whole globe

Even a disinterested NL teen in remote Lagos, now forced to learn the hollow distinction btw soccer & f/ball, may not be wrong to wonder if 'Americans' are not a tenuously ignorant bunch. Really, IMO, they are mostly an independent-minded & sensible lot in d long run as Andrew H. has just demonstrated, a red-state conservative from a military family at that. :-)
