http://ewn.co.za/2017/03/13/man-gets-20-years-behind-bars-for-human-trafficking MAN GETS 20 YEARS BEHIND BARS FOR HUMAN TRAFFICKING JOHANNESBURG – The High Court in Johannesburg has sentenced a man convicted of human trafficking a 15-year-old girl and forcing her into prostitution to an effective 20 years in prison. Two weeks ago Eke Ogochukwu was found guilty of four charges relating to human trafficking. The teenager escaped in August 2015 and received help from a nearby church in Rosettenville. Judge Majake Mabesele says what the accused did was cruel. “Clearly what happened to her was cruel, inhuman and degrading and was a violation of the right to human dignity, which is enshrined in our Constitution.” Ogochukwu, known to the girl only as Johnny, sexually abused the 15-year-old. The court heard that he would drug her, force her to perform sexual acts with other men and take the money she made through prostitution. The young girl was given R50 a day for food and a further R100 for every man she was forced to sleep with. The judge says Ogochukwu took advantage of the teenager as she was homeless after running away from her Vereeniging home in 2015 following a fight with her mother. “The perpetrators of these offences deserve severe punishment in order to protect and promote a bright future for our young generation.” After the minor escaped officials alerted the police and Ogochukwu was arrested. |

http://businesstech.co.za/news/mobile/127323/mtn-appoints-new-president-and-ceo/ MTN has advised that it has appointed Rob Shuter as the new Group President and CEO of the company, following the successful resolution of its Nigerian dispute. Shuter would replace MTN Executive Chairman, Phuthuma Nhleko, who stepped in as acting CEO of the company to proactively deal with the Nigerian regulators following the resignation of Sifiso Dabengwa as group CEO in November 2015. Shuter, a South African national, is the current CEO of the European Cluster at Vodafone Group and has extensive experience in telecoms and banking, having held senior management roles at Vodacom Group, Standard Bank and Nedbank prior to joining Vodafone Group, MTN said. “Rob may commence as soon as it is practically possible in 2017, but not later than 1 July 2017, after the completion of his current contractual obligations,” the mobile operator said. “MTN is confident that Rob will bring experience and new insights to the CEO role having had many years in the telecoms sector both in Africa and Europe as well as in banking where his expertise will help as MTN continues to develop its new business strategy.” MTN announced earlier in June that it resolved a dispute with the Federal Government of Nigeria (FGN) and agreed to pay a total cash amount of 330 billion naira over three years – the equivalent of R25 billion. The Nigerian Communication Commission (NCC) had previously slapped MTN with a $5.2 billion fine last year, for failing to disconnect more than five million unregistered SIMs on its network. This fine was later reduced by 25%, but MTN elected to take the matter to Nigeria’s courts. MTN said it aims to increase it focus on new revenue streams by appointing a new VP M&A and strategy effective 1 October 2016. “The appointee has a wealth of banking experience….his name will be announced before 30 June 2016,” the company said. The company added Mike Harper, Lerato Phalatse, Mike Bosman and Trudy Makhaya to its board in South Africa, with Paul Hanratty, Stan Miller, and Nkululeko (“Nkunku”) Sowazi being appointed to the group board. Nhleko will revert to his role as non executive chairman as soon as Shuter assumes his new position. “MTN has weathered a rather difficult storm and will continue to review its governance and management operating structure to ensure that it operates at an optimum level and continues to replenish management talent to ensure a sustained growth of the business,” he said. “I am honoured to have the opportunity and look forward to working with Phuthuma and the MTN Group board to ensure that we build on a strong foundation laid over the last 15 – 20 years for the Group to realize its full potential,” Shuter said. |

Are the Indians in Nigeria also peddling drugs and involved in other diabolical activities in their host country? If that's the case then you should have deported them long ago. But if they respect the laws of the land, rather encourage and ensure that Nigerians do the same in their adoptive countries. chukxie: |

http://www.news24.com/SouthAfrica/News/massive-zuma-must-fall-billboard-goes-up-in-cape-town-20160115 2016-01-15 12:13 Cape Town – A hard-to-miss "Zuma Must Fall" billboard that went up in central Cape Town on Friday morning has got tongues wagging about who paid to erect it. Many suspected it was the Democratic Alliance, after the party repeatedly called for President Jacob Zuma’s impeachment. But DA national spokesperson Phumzile van Damme said they were not responsible. "It isn’t ours," she said with a chuckle. The large advertising space hugs one side of an apartment block at the top of Long Street, on the corner of Kloof and Buitensingel streets. Renting the space is sure to cost a pretty penny. Twitter was abuzz with speculation. Many took their own photos of the billboard, which sits above a McDonalds. Twitter user @paulopinjr commented: "Wow!!!! The beauty of freedom of speech! I wonder how long this will stay up." Radio presenter and media entertainment agency owner Ian Bredenkamp tweeted that whoever put the billboard up was "someone with big balls and deep pockets". @Stu_Thom4s tweeted: "Guys, putting a #ZumaMustFall sign on Kloof Street is like telling Tribe customers that coffee is great. They're there, they know...", while @thejigg commented: "The #ZumaMustFall billboard on Long Str is all kinds of telling. Also, let's not forget the CBD has less than 10 actual billboard sites." Pretoria - A gang who killed a Somali shop owner while robbing his store in Mdutjana, Mpumalanga, were given sentences in the High Court in Pretoria on Wednesday. Sentencing Themba Mathibela, 33, Elias Skosana, 33, and Joseph Masombuka, 27, of KwaMhlanga for the June 2012 murder of Somali shop owner, Ahmed Salaad, Judge Mmonoa Teffo said the three had shown no contrition for what they did and were therefore not candidates for rehabilitation. She sentenced the three to a further 20 years imprisonment on charges of robbery with aggravating circumstances and the illegal possession of two shotguns, a pistol and ammunition. All sentences would run concurrently with the life sentence. The gang went to Salaad's shop, Mike Supermarket, in the early hours and accosted him and his two friends who were sleeping in the shop. Armed with shotgun They first tried to break down the back door, but then gained entry through the front door as their victims tried to run away. They forced the men back into the shop and robbed them of R2 500. Mathibela, armed with a shotgun, shot and killed the 26-year-old Salaad in front of his friends during the robbery. He died at the scene. One of his friends ran away, while the other one managed to hide in the shop while the robbers continued to loot it. Teffo said the victims had come to South Africa for a better life and to work for their families back home. The manner in which Salaad was killed in front of his friends was senseless and callous and they had been traumatised by his death. "There was no reason to kill Salaad, who did not show any resistance and co-operated with the robbers," she said. "Statistics show that murder and robbery is on the increase in the country. People are tired of violence. "Human life is a precious gift from God. Our Constitution teaches us to respect everyone. It makes no difference that these people were foreigners. They deserved to be treated like any other South African," she added. Teffo said the three were motivated by greed and had planned the robbery. The murder was committed in the furtherance of a common goal. They maintained their innocence throughout their trial and displayed a complete lack of remorse. Although the three insisted that their youth and the fact that two of them were first offenders was mitigating, Teffo said they had not demonstrated any immaturity in their actions. They were not influenced by peer pressure, and life imprisonment was prescribed for all offenders who committed such crimes. They had persisted with their actions, despite the Somalis screaming for help, and clearly did not attach any value to other people's lives or their dignity, said Teffo. http://www.news24.com/SouthAfrica/News/life-sentences-for-mpumalanga-gang-who-killed-somali-shop-owner-20151209 |
Such ignorance! Such bigotry! Such hatred! Not different at all to racism, tribalism and xenophobia! It's a pity that humans find it acceptable to direct such vile profanities at (and even justify murder of) others, simply because they look, behave or feel differently to what they consider the norm. Just wait until the same hatred is directed at them by those who consider them different. They cry the loudest! |
Misleading title. Since when has the South African government the authority to imprison people. That authority lies with the courts of law. |
The South African Govt does not imprison people. The authority to imprison lies with the courts. |
This commission commenced way before the MTN saga. Hundreds of church leaders from different denominations and national origins have appeared before it. How you make a connection to MTN is just plain ludicrous. |
http://afkinsider.com/104941/south-african-airways-adds-second-nigerian-gateway-in-abuja/ South African Airways plans to make Abuja a second flight entry point to Nigeria in addition to Lagos, expanding business travel options in West Africa, according to a report in FinancialChannel. The first flight is scheduled to depart O.R Tambo International Airport on Jan. 26 2016. SAA said adding a second gateway to existing daily service to Lagos will strengthen the airline’s position moving goods and people between Southern Africa and West Africa and enhance trade and cultural exchanges. In August, SAA introduced an Accra, Ghana-to-Washington, D.C. route in cooperation with Africa World Airways. This gave SAA the confidence to invest further and enhance its footprint in West Africa, FinancialChannel reported. SAA confirmed it is technically insolvent and relying on government guarantees — about $1.2 billion worth — AirTransportWorld reported in February. “SAA has been reliant on guarantees from its shareholder (the South African government) for several years,” the report said. Other African airlines that struggled to survive in the past two years include Kenya Airways, Air Namibia, Air Zimbabwe and Air Malawi, BusinessInsider reported in 2013. A second entry point in Nigeria forms part of SAA’s long-term turnaround strategy, which identified growth on the African continent as one of its key objectives, said Sylvain Bosc, SAA chief commercial officer, according to FinancialChannel. “Nigeria is one of the fastest growing air travel markets in sub-Saharan Africa,” Bosc said. “Introducing Abuja as a second entry point… will add more travel options, especially for the business community, and will enhance our footprint on the continent.” Abuja flights will connect to destinations such as Perth, Hong Kong and Sao Paulo through O.R Tambo International airport. With Abuja, SAA will be serving eleven destinations in Central and West Africa, with flights from its Johannesburg hub to Lagos; Abidjan, Ivory Coast; Cotonou, Benin; Accra, Ghana; Douala, Cameroon; Dakar, Senegal; Libreville, Gabon; Kinshasa, DRC; and Pointe Noire and Brazzaville, Republic of the Congo. Three non-stop weekly flights will operate between Johannesburg and the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja. - See more at: http://afkinsider.com/104941/south-african-airways-adds-second-nigerian-gateway-in-abuja/#sthash.5RyCaTRm.dpuf |
http://www.satsa.com/saa-adds-abuja-nigeria-to-its-route-network/ SAA is to commence flights to a second entry point in Nigeria in January 2016, namely the capital of Abuja. Adding a second gateway to the existing daily service to Lagos materially strengthens SAA’s position in West Africa, and follows closely on the introduction of the Accra, Ghana to Washington Dulles, USA route, in August 2015. “A second entry point in Nigeria forms part of our Long-Term Turnaround Strategy, which identified growth on the African continent as one of its key objectives. Nigeria is one of the fastest growing air travel markets in Sub-Saharan Africa and will be well served with our additional services to Abuja, says Sylvain Bosc, SAA Chief Commercial Officer. “Enhancing air travel links with Nigeria speaks to the growth in bilateral relations between South Africa and Nigeria. The two countries historically have had strong economic, diplomatic, social and fraternal ties. These are the two economic powerhouses of Africa, with much more to offer and share,” says Aaron Munetsi, SAA Regional General Manager for Africa. Abuja flights have been scheduled for seamless connectivity into SAA’s inter-continental route network to destinations such as Perth, Hong Kong and Sao Paulo. These connections will make it easy for regional traders, leisure travellers, travellers visiting friends and relatives, diplomatic communities, and international organisations from the northern and central parts of Nigeria to seamlessly connect through O.R Tambo International airport onwards to the airline’s inter-continental and regional route network. Abuja, built in the 1980s, became Nigeria’s capital in December 1991. Located in the centre of Nigeria, within the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), it is the Nigerian seat of government where the Presidency, National Assembly, Supreme Court, and Embassies of most countries are situated. A business city housing many government employees, Abuja has also become popular for the serene and beautiful landscape it offers. With Abuja, SAA will be serving eight destinations in Central and West Africa, with flights from its Johannesburg hub to Lagos (Nigeria); Abidjan (Ivory Coast); Cotonou (Benin); Accra (Ghana); Douala (Cameroon), Dakar (Senegal) and Libreville (Gabon) already forming part of the extensive regional route network. The three weekly flights will operate non-stop between Johannesburg and the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja aboard Airbus 330-200s, offering SAA Business class comfort and luxury, with the latest in In-flight entertainment. The first flight is scheduled to depart O.R Tambo International Airport on 26 January 2016. Flights are open for sale on all SAA’s distribution channels. SA80 will depart Johannesburg on Tuesdays, Fridays and Sundays at 23h00 to arrive at 04h10 the following day. SA81 will depart Abuja on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays at 08h40, arriving 15h40. |
