Everyone can relate to staying up in bed online, past midnight blithely flirting with the crush and at the same time engaging in a lively conversation with your pals on that WhatsApp group that can’t seem to give you a break. And for majority of us who are constantly on the grind throughout the day, unwillfully dozing off mid-conversation, unceremoniously leaving the other person hanging and waking up to send that “sorry, I passed out” text the following day, is part of the norm. The National Leader of All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, says the country needs a focused and determined leader like President Muhammadu Buhari to gradually re-engineer the economy for the benefit of all. Tinubu who noted that Buhari is the foundation for re-engineering and reinvigorating Nigeria’s economy for a better future made the remark in Lagos on Wednesday during the Eid-el-Kabir celebration The APC leader reiterated that a strong foundation mattered in nation-building. He said that building such a foundation required patience, perseverance, and commitment as it often presented difficulties for the people. ” Economic development and the future of the youth are crucial in the growth of any nation and we are taking care of that. ”You have to re-grow the economy, re-engineer it from bottom-up, during that process, it is always very difficult for ordinary people. “They bear the brunt of the economic difficulties because they are in the lower cadre of the society. ”You can only use and depend on what you have and if you manage to use resources carefully, yes, you end up enjoying a multiple developments in the country and that is why I always emphasize that foundation matters. ”Foundation is crucially important. I have listened to the people. I have been in contact with them at the grassroots. ”Even this house is not spared too, from demands from the poor and the needy, but without re-growing the economy, re-tooling, re-engineering the economy, we will not have anything. ”We ate the seed of growth for breakfast. Therefore, there is nothing for lunch or dinner. Nothing to harvest, that is what we talk about looters. ”But it will not take a magical touch to bring it to reality, It takes patience and perseverance. Three years is not enough time to for retouching, redevelopment and re-engineering the country. ”There is a lot of hope, there is a lot of expectation, but when the treasury was empty, when the salaries were outstanding, when the quality of life is low, what will you do? ”We have oil, they didn’t save money and we have not diversified the economy. We have eaten our dinner for breakfast, nothing in the kitchen. “There is no magic about it. It takes dedication, commitment and perseverance. “Yes, we might not be communicating effectively with the people but we are working to make things better, ” he said. ”Nigerians adopted democracy, we are going to live through this democratic government. ”We need a … President Buhari, to retool and re-engineer, that is what he is doing in the economy and he is doing it gradually, otherwise we don’t want it to fall apart again. ”Continuity, perseverance, and endurance, those are what we need. Our determination is progress for the country and for the people. We can’t go back. ”I am very proud of what I have done in Lagos to be where it is. We were meticulous, dedicated and focused and we lifted the spirits of our people and that is why it is important for Nigerians to be focused now, ” he said. Tinubu urged Nigerians to make sacrifices, endure, tolerate and forgive one another in the spirit of Eid-el-Kabir celebration. ”When you pray for forgiveness, you must be able to give forgiveness if you think you deserve forgiveness. ”Can you ask God to give you what you cannot give to another fellow human being? That is simple, “Tinubu said. SOURCE: https://barewa.com.ng/2019-election-we-still-need-buhari-tinubu/

Imam Who Saved Christians During Plateau Massacre Honored By US Government [/b [b]SOURCE: https://barewa.com.ng/imam-who-saved-christians-during-plateau-massacre-honored-by-us-government/ The United States has honoured the septuagenarian Imam Abdullahi Abubakar who saved about 300 Christians from attackers in Nghar Yelwa village of Barkin Ladi local government of the Plateau state. The cleric was recognised and honoured at an event organised by the US embassy in Jos as Nigerians were urged to emulate the cleric’s gesture. The Imam saved about 300 persons on June 24 when suspected Fulani herdsmen invaded about 15 communities in the Barkin Ladi LGA, killing over 200 persons. The people, mainly Christians, were said to be fleeing from a neighbouring village in the Barkin Ladi LGA when the Imam hid them in his house and mosque. “I hid the women in my personal house and after that, I took the men into the mosque and hid them there,” Imam Abubakar had stated. However, the assailants caught up with the Imam, forcefully demanding that he release those who were Christians in the mosque. But the cleric said deceived the bandits that all those in the mosque were Muslims and upon hearing this, the attackers left him and continued with their killing elsewhere.

Lionel Messi’s brother has been sentenced for possessing an illegal firearm. The Barcelona star’s sibling, Matias, received a two-and-a-half year prison sentence on Thursday but instead of going to jail, he will undertake community service. Argentine newspaper, La Capital, report that the decision was reached through a deal with investigating prosecutors. The firearm was found late in 2017 inside a blood-stained boat, which Matias crashed in the Parana River. The 35-year-old was initially held under preventive arrest and later released while he recovered from a fractured jaw and other injuries in the Santa Fe province of Argentina. Matias’ lawyer originally argued that his client crashed the boat into a sandbank and denied that he owned the gun. This isn’t the first time Matias has had brushes with the law for allegedly illegally carrying a firearm. The five-time Ballon d’Or winner’s brother, who has been linked with known criminals in the past, was held for 16 hours in a prison cell for in 2015 after officers found an an unlicensed 22-caliber gun in his car. He was also arrested in 2008 for allegedly having a loaded gun in his belt. Matias is the middle brother in the Messi family, with Rodrigo aged 38 and Lionel aged 31. The trio also have a younger sister, 31, called Maria. Matias and Rodrigo helped the Argentina international build up a huge passion for football by playing constantly together when they were younger. Matias – alongside his mother, Celia María Cuccittini helps manage the Barcelona forward’s charitable organisation, the Leo Messi Foundation. President Buhari Invites Imam Who Saved 300 Souls In Plateau Killings SOURCE: https://barewa.com.ng/president-buhari-invites-imam-who-saved-300-christians-in-plateau-state/ President Muhammadu Buhari has directed Governor Simon Lalong of Plateau State to bring 83-year-old Imam of Nghar village, Gashish district in Barkin Ladi local government area of the state, Abdullahi Abubakar, for “a handshake and national honour.” Governor Lalong revealed Buhari’s plan for Imam Abubakar in Jos on Monday, during the opening ceremony of a three-day peace and security conference with the theme, “The resurgence of violence in Plateau state: Towards a multi-stakeholder partnership for peace and security.” Buhari took the decision following reports that the Imam saved about 300 persons on June 24 when suspected herdsmen invaded about 15 communities in Barkin Ladi LGA, killing scores. The victims were said to be running for safety from a neighbouring village in the Barkin Ladi LGA when the Imam allegedly hid them in his house and mosque. Lalong applauding Imam Abubakar said: “The president has told me to bring to Imam Abdullahi Abubakar for a handshake, which will be followed by a national honour. “I was also preparing what to do for this man. Although he is already in his old age, God knows why he did it at that age – for us to study and also know how to maintain peace, not only in Plateau state but also in Nigeria in general. “He did not only save the people of Barkin Ladi LGA, not only Plateau state, but I think the whole of this country because 300 lives is not a small number. “So, Alhaji Abdullahi Abubakar, only God will reward you for what you have done. We are waiting for that process of meeting the president for a handshake and national honour. “Having a handshake with the president at the age of 83, I think the man will be happy, even if he is going to his grave, that something has happened in his life” READ MORE: https://barewa.com.ng/president-buhari-invites-imam-who-saved-300-christians-in-plateau-state/

It was gathered that his neighbours observed that the victim was walking awkwardly and on inquiry, were informed by the girl that her father “put something in her private part.” According to Northern City News, the suspect’s wife was away to their home town, Daura, Katsina State when he committed the act. The incident reportedly occurred on July 16, when the suspect sneaked into the children’s room and had sex with her. Audu said that he had been having sex with underage girls before he sexually abused his own daughter. He said:- “I blamed my wife for not being around when I needed sex, she travels a lot and that was why I had to sleep with my daughter; what a shameful thing. “That night, I was having a burning sensation to have sex and since my wife was not around, I had no option but to sleep with my daughter to ease off tension”. The Command’s Public Relations Officer, Muhammad Abubakar, said the suspect had confessed to the crime and regretted his action. Abubakar described the incident as unfortunate, saying, “When a father decides to sleep with his biological daughter, I think the world is coming to an end.”

SOURCE: https://barewa.com.ng/ekiti-state-assembly-rejects-governorship-election-result-adjourns-till-october-see-details/ The Ekiti State House of Assembly has adjourned legislative business until October 8, citing issues of harassment and insecurity. The house, by the resolution, will only resume duties a week to the expiration of the tenure of the governor, Ayo Fayose. The house also condemned and rejected the outcome of Saturday’s governorship election which produced Kayode Fayemi of the All Progressives Congress as governor. The house is dominated by Mr Fayose’s Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) members. House Leader, Akinyele Olatunji, described the process leading to the election and final result as unfortunate. Mr Akinyele condemned the alleged harassment of Mr Fayose, PDP leaders across the state and members of the state assembly by security personnel. On the long break of the house, Mr Akinyele said, “the adjournment became imperative due to the political harassment of members by security agents.” Also speaking, the Chairman House Committee on information, Samuel Omotoso, said the election of July 14 did not meet democratic standards. According to him, the election was marred by “outright brigandage, vote buying and falsification of results.” The Deputy Whip of the Assembly, Ekundayo Akinleye, remarked that the outcome of the election showed Nigerians should not expect free and fair 2019 general elections. He alleged there were discrepancies in the final figures released by INEC. The Speaker of the Assembly, Kola Oluwawole, described the election as a show of shame, with thugs and security agents allegedly openly working for the APC. Mr Oluwawole said figures were brazenly doubled to favour the declared winner and expressed confidence that the stolen mandate would soon be retrieved. Deliberation on the poll led to the passage of an eighth-point resolution which stated among other things that the election was heavily militarised with palpable fear on the faces of the electorate; that the security agencies compromised to the bidding of the APC; that the APC induced voters with money with connivance of the security agencies. The House also held that there was ballot snatching by APC thugs, while PDP supporters were molested and chased out of polling booths and collation centres in open glare of security agents. The lawmakers resolved that “the result of the governorship election stood rejected by the House. “That the security agencies should vacate the entrance of the Government House where they were currently laying siege and also condemned the siege on the government owned radio and television outfits by armed military personnel.” The house called on the security agencies not to hamper the work of the Ekiti State Government. “I’m different from other players who think their careers are over when they’re my age,” - Ronaldo SOURCE: https://barewa.com.ng/im-different-from-other-players-who-think-their-careers-are-over-when-theyre-my-age-ronaldo/ Cristiano Ronaldo said that he’s “different” from other players of his age who move to China or Qatar for mega-money deals, during his official unveiling as a Juventus player on Monday. The five-time Ballon d’Or winner was his usual confident self at a press conference in Turin attended by media from all over the globe, following the announcement last week of his 100 million-euro ($117 million) move from European champions Real Madrid. “I’m different from other players who think their careers are over when they’re my age,” said the 33-year-old Portugal captain. “I want to show that I’m not like the others, I’m different. “Players of my age go to China or Qatar so coming to such an important club at this stage in my career makes me very happy.” Juventus signed the superstar attacker, who signed a four-year deal worth a reported 30 million euros a season, in the hope that he will push them to a coveted Champions League title, the continent’s holy grail. Preparing to make a run at their eighth Serie A title in as many years and winner of four straight domestic doubles, the Old Lady of Italian football have struggled to turn Italian dominance into European trophies. Juve haven’t won the competition since 1996 but were beaten finalists in 2015 and 2017, bested respectively by Barcelona and Ronaldo’s former club. Ronaldo meanwhile has scored more Champions League’s goals – 120 – than anyone else and won four out of the last five editions with Real Madrid. “We’re going to fight for not just Champions League, but also Serie A and the others trophies,” he said. “I need to work hard because the Champions League is not easily won. I hope I can help.” SOURCE: https://barewa.com.ng/im-different-from-other-players-who-think-their-careers-are-over-when-theyre-my-age-ronaldo/ |

SOURCE: https://barewa.com.ng/pdp-apologises-to-obasanjo-over-bad-conduct-mistreatment-aide/ The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has apologised to former President Olusegun Obasanjo for ‘‘bad conduct and mistreatment,’’ Kehinde Akinyemi, Mr Obasanjo’s media aide, has said. Mr Akinyemi made the disclosure in a statement issued on Saturday. He said the party’s national chairman, Uche Secondus, who led a 21-member delegation of the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) on a courtesy call on Mr Obasanjo, gave the apology. Other issues raised by Mr Secondus, according to Mr Akinyemi, were the situation in the country, the progress of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on grand alliance of the Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP). He said the PDP national chairman also appealed with Mr Obasanjo to continue to proffer solutions to the nation’s socio-economic and political problems. Mr Akinyemi said that Mr Obasanjo granted forgiveness to the party in line with biblical injunction. He said the former president urged them to pay attention to issues that were needed to restore PDP as a party of good image, discipline, commitment, leadership and moral principles. On CUPP being championed by PDP, he said Mr Obasanjo advised that the coalition should remain an alliance as being projected and not a merger. ‘‘The MoU for grand alliance is what it says, a grand alliance. It is neither a merger nor absorption of any political party by any political party. ‘‘It is clear for the parties which agreed to be members of the alliance to work together to achieve one important common objective at the national level for the election of 2019. ‘‘Where it is appropriate and necessary, members may also form alliance and co-operation at the state level. ‘‘The individuality and independence of each political party must be observed and respected by all parties concerned. ‘‘It is also desirable that in the process of implementing the MoU to achieve the set objective, solidarity and focus on the objective must be maintained. ‘‘Each member political party must be cautious of fake news, rumours, blackmail, and seeds of discord that may be sown among them from external quarters,’’ Mr Akinyemi quoted Mr Obasanjo as saying. He said the former president at the meeting reiterated that he had quit partisan politics, but would continue to make himself available to guide any party that so desired. Mr Akinyemi, however, maintained that he would prioritise his service to the African Democratic Congress. Mr Secondus, who spoke with journalists shortly after the meeting, said the chieftains of the party were in Abeokuta to consult with Mr Obasanjo ahead of the 2019 general elections. He emphasised that the consultation had become necessary to seek direction from Mr Obasanjo and factor in his pieces of advice as PDP prepares for the 2019 general elections. |
SOURCE: https://barewa.com.ng/i-will-resign-if-anybody-can-prove-god-exists-philippines-president/ President of the Philippines Rodrigo Duterte has offered to resign if anyone can take a selfie with God to prove he exists. His comments came just days after he called God “stupid”. The latest outburst shows Duterte, aged 73, increasingly at odds with the Church in which he was raised and to which most Filipinos belong. In the last few days, Duterte has also said he does not like the “creeping influence” of the Catholic Church. In addition, his presidential spokesman has accused the Church of working with Communist rebels to overthrow the government in the Philippines. The spokesman said the Church “sometimes runs counter to what the government believes to be good for the people, at least in this temporal life”. In his latest speech on Saturday at the inauguration of the Malayan colleges in Mindanao, Duterte invited everyone “to become agents of hope and catalysts of progress”. He urged all sectors of our society to keep supporting his administration’s development agenda, especially in pursuits that would educate our young and empower more Filipinos, and his government’s ongoing campaign against illegal drugs and criminality. “This will be helpful in ridding ourselves of the social ills that have shackled our growth and hindered our country from achieving its full potential.” After describing his own progress through the education system and then his career in law and politics, he said he believed in God, but did not believe in a God who intervenes in the world. “Otherwise there would be no widespread injustice: hunger, killings, and all.” If any one of the many billions of people on earth can go to heaven, talk to God, and take a selfie, “I will step down tomorrow. No question,” he said. The Catholic bishops in the Philippines have been highly critical of Duterte’s crackdown on drugs, which has resulted in thousands of deaths. Two priests have themselves been shot this year, one only last month. In the last few days the bishops have called for fasting and prayers after Duterte called God “stupid”. The president said in his latest address: “Every Filipino is entitled to criticise me as a matter of right. A general, a school dean, the academe, the students.” If he falls short of expectations they are right to criticise because he will have failed them in his promises. “But certainly not a foreigner, however holy, he said. He will not allow foreigners to attack him, just as he is not allowed to attack leaders of other countries. Referring to the priests, and the Church, and everybody connected with any religion or whatever, he continued: “When you criticise me, criticise me with all the heart’s content. Do it. I’m even asking you to do it.” However, the separation of Church and state is a principle of the republican system of government. “So when you criticise me, do not use the platform of God, that God will send you to hell, that God will never forgive you, hell is waiting for you. Do not do it. Do not take God — God’s name in vain. It’s fundamental. It’s almost basic. There is really a clear cut between religion and governance. You cannot use God to criticise me.” He has never said he does not believe in God. “But something terrible happened when we were young… while confessing, we were fondled.” So when he graduated, he decided he no longer believed in the Catholic God and created his own God instead – a God of justice and fairness. “My God is my service to the people. Period. SOURCE: https://barewa.com.ng/i-will-resign-if-anybody-can-prove-god-exists-philippines-president/ |
SOURCE: https://barewa.com.ng/we-shall-fish-out-and-punish-politicians-behind-violence-in-nigeria-buhari/ President Muhammadu Buhari has vowed to fish out and punish politicians he claims are behind some of the violence going on in the country. The president made this vow while delivering his keynote address during the Nigerian Army Day celebration in Monguno, Borno State, on Friday, July 6, 2018. The president said the disgruntled politicians who have been fueling insecurity in the country will be punished according to the country’s laws. He said, “Our nation is safe again, thanks to the efforts of our security agencies. This does not mean there are no challenges. “There are pockets of violence in several states, some deliberately instigated by disgruntled politicians who have lost all arguments and are desperate to cause mayhem as a way of seeking relevance. “We shall fish them out and punish according to the provision of the law.” The president further promised that the government will soon resolve all issues of insecurity in the country especially the ongoing herders-farmers conflict that has claimed hundreds of lives in 2018 alone SOURCE: https://barewa.com.ng/we-shall-fish-out-and-punish-politicians-behind-violence-in-nigeria-buhari/ |
The Vice President of Nigeria, Yemi Osinbajo said on Thursday that the celebration of the 2018 Nigerian Army Day at Mongunu in Borno North was a proof that the “end of the Boko Haram terrorists group will come sooner than later.’’ Osinbajo, who spoke at a “Mini Trade Fair and Military Equipment Exhibition as part of activities to mark the day, also said that it was a proof that the terrorist had been “substantially degraded. According to him, Borno and the entire region (North East) will surely bounce back, and with the support of the rest of the country, make up for the years of bloodshed and destruction. The vice president said that the Sambisa forest, once the symbol of Boko Haram’s domination of the region, had been reclaimed, while the work of rebuilding had started in many communities across the state. “Indeed, we are here to celebrate all of these wonderful successes, and progress. “At a point, a few years ago, it felt as though they, terrorists were succeeding. “As a result of the insecurity, social and economic life rolled to a halt in many parts of the state, as Boko Haram controlled a large territory and acted like the de-facto government of the state. “The town of Monguno, which today is playing host to us, was a few years ago firmly in the hands of the terrorists. “Today, thankfully, the tide has turned, in large part on account of the gallant and heroic work of the Nigerian Army. And it is on account of this that we are here today, to celebrate. “We are here to celebrate the gallantry of our soldiers, men and women from every part of Nigeria, of different faiths and tribes and tongues, gathered to fight and defeat a common enemy. “We are also celebrating the resilience of the people of Borno State, and reaffirming that our primary obligation to them, as a Government, is to ensure that they are able return to their communities and rebuild their lives and livelihoods in peace and safety,’’ the vice president said. Osinbajo expressed delight over the progress being recorded by the ongoing Operation Last Hold designed to rid remnant of terrorists from the Lake Chad Basin and Northern Borno. The vice president noted in the last three years, life was gradually returning to many parts of Borno as schools had reopened, airlines resumed flights, religious celebrations held, major roads and highways reopened. He said that he had no doubt that NADCEL and events lined up to mark it in Mongunu “will go a long way towards changing the negative narrative of terrorism, hunger and danger that have defined the North Eastern part of Nigeria, and the entire Lake Chad Basin, in the last decade.’’ Osinbajo commended the army which he said had fought wars at home and abroad, to secure the country, and keep it united, though it suffered loss and setback. He specifically commended the Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Tukur Yusuf Buratai for “inspiring the Nigerian army to turn the tide against Boko Haram.’’ “With the success of yet another Army Day Celebration, this time in the heartland of a dying insurgency, Gen. Buratai has left no doubt about the quality of his leadership. “And today, we are all proud to associate with the Nigerian Army, for the ongoing victory in the North East. “Long may that victory continue, even as it extends to other troubled parts of the country,’’ he said. The vice president acknowledged the sacrifice made by members of the armed forces and other security agencies in the fight against the terrorists, saying “we are also here to remember. “To remember the tens of thousands who have lost their lives to this needless violence; the innocent civilians, and the vigilante and military dead, who paid the ultimate sacrifice to preserve the security and sovereignty of Nigeria. “We will never forget. And we shall continually strive to work to build a Nigeria in which terrorists and bandits shall have neither sway nor leeway. President Buhari has said that the political future of Igbos in Nigeria depends on his re-election in 2019. The president stated this at the Southeast mega rally at Dan Anyiam Stadium in Imo State, organized by Governor Rochas Okorocha yesterday July 3rd. Represented by the Secretary to the Federal Government of the Federation, SGF, Boss Mustapha, President Buhari said “The people of the South East are part of Nigeria and they have the right to make claim where the need arises and we will all support them. “The Igbo are not good starters. But whenever they start, they can catch it. Let me say this, 2019 is an election that will make or mar the chances of Igbo in Nigeria. I want Igbo to make a paradigm shift. “We have to know that the position of the presidency is negotiable. You can argue it from the point of strength and not from the point of weakness. 2019 will determine the future of this country. Let me say this, there are 18 Christians and 18 Muslims in Buhari’s cabinet. Even the Vice President is a Christian. I see a whole lot of people coming out to be president. Let me tell them Nigeria is not a Banana republic”. SOURCE: https://barewa.com.ng/the-political-future-of-the-igbos-rests-on-my-re-election-buhari/
