A Federal High Court in Abuja has ordered the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), the Department of State Services (DSS) and other security agencies to arrest Diezani Alison-Madueke, the former minister of petroleum, within 72 hours.

According to The Cable, the order was issued by Justice Valentine Ashi based on a motion filed by the counsel to the EFCC, Msuur Denga.

Denga had earlier prayed the court to issue a warrant for the former minister’s arrest to enable the anti-graft agency arraign her in court.

The EFCC investigated the former minister along with Jide Omokore, a former Chairman, Atlantic Energy Drilling Company, following a petition dated October 2, 2013, from Coalition Against Corrupt Leaders, CACOL, bordering on money laundering and official corruption.

EFCC said in a statement that investigations into the petition revealed that Mrs Alison-Madueke as supervising minister of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, was found to have engaged in illicit and monumental fraudulent dealings in oil transactions, which she entered into on behalf of the Federal Government.

Mrs Alison-Madueke and Mr Omokore are also alleged to have accepted and given gifts in properties located at Penthouse 22, Block B, Admiralty Estate, Ikoyi, and Penthouse 21, Building 5, Block C, Banana Island, Lagos.

They are to be arraigned on February 25, 2019 on a five-count charge for the offences, which are contrary to Sections 26(1) of the Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Act, 2000.

When the matter came up on Monday the Commission however filed application for warrant of arrest, condition precedent for Mrs Alison-Madueke’s extradition protocol to bring her back home to face trail.

The prosecution told the court that Mrs Alison-Madueke, who is currently in the United Kingdom, jetted out of the country while investigations into the alleged fraudulent acts were ongoing.

The court today, granted the ex parte motion, and ordered the security agencies to provide Mrs Alison-Madueke within 72 hours, for her to face the charge preferred against her.

“The Inspector General of Police, the Chairman of the EFCC, the Attorney General, the Department of State Services, are hereby ordered in the name of the President, Federal Republic of Nigeria to apprehend and arrest the first defendant and produce her before this court for further directives within 72 hours,” the judge held.

Manchester City striker, Sergio Aguero, has said they are the only team that can stop themselves from winning the Premier League title this season.

Champions City currently hold a two-point lead at the top of the table and are aiming for back-to-back titles for the first time in the club’s history.

Only Manchester United and Chelsea have won the Premier League back-to-back.

“I think the Premier League is going to be more complicated this season than last.

“I think Liverpool and Chelsea are our main threats, without forgetting Arsenal, as they have been playing really well recently.

“It’s very difficult to win the Premier League again, but I think we have a good team. We are on top of the table and we have the desire to achieve that [back-to-back titles].

“At the end of the day, it’s going to depend on us. If we keep playing well and getting three points after three points, what the rest of the teams do is not going to matter. But I think it’s going to be tight until the end of the season.

“I don’t think many teams have managed to win back-to-back. It’s always good to set goals and try to achieve them.

“We are focused on our goal, so I think if we all pull together, we can do something historic,” Aguero said according to the UK Mirror.

City remain unbeaten in the league, along with Liverpool and Chelsea, but Aguero said it would be tough to emulate Arsenal’s ‘Invincibles’ by going the entire season without a defeat.

“The Premier League is not easy. Staying unbeaten is not within the reach of many teams. I think we have undertaken a big process since Pep arrived.

“We are progressing very well, we won the Premier League last season and we just think about how we can keep growing. If we manage to keep this up, stay focused, keep thinking of winning and doing the things right, we can keep the unbeaten record,” he added.

Arsenal midfielder Granit Xhaka believes he is in the best form of his career at the club and he attributes that improvement to the arrival of Unai Emery.

Xhaka joined Arsenal in 2016 in a deal which could reportedly reach £40million having enjoyed four years in the Bundesliga with Borussia Monchengladbach. But in his first two seasons in the Premier League, Xhaka struggled to convince fans, often looking awkward and overly aggressive in a defensive midfield role..

And Xhaka is putting his elevated performances down to Emery, who succeeded Arsene Wenger ahead of 2018-19.

“It’s definitely my best season so far,” he told Aargauer Zeitung. “Without doubt, I think I’ve taken another step forward. “It’s the best I’ve felt at Arsenal since I came to the club and the coach has had an enormous influence. He prepares us all and we have a plan. We know how to do it with the ball and without the ball. We know how and when to stand where. “Emery is like Lucien Favre [whom Xhaka played for at Gladbach], a freak who pushes us back and forth, 10 times, until everyone understands. I never had contact with him [Emery] until after the World Cup. When I got back to training, the first thing he told me was: ‘Granit, you’re one of my five captains.’

“I’m at one of the top 10 clubs in the world, so that makes you proud and gives you confidence. It was a great sign of the club to extend my contract until 2023. For me that’s a huge sign of appreciation. I knew then I was very important to the club.”

Former Chelsea goal poacher Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink has revealed that Maurizio Sarri will needs to sign another striker to challenge Manchester City for the Premier League title.

The Blues will hope to continue their unbeaten run this season when the battle Tottenham Hotspurs at Wembley after international in the week 13 of the Premier League.

Chelsea’s run under new manager Sarri has led some to predict a Premier League title challenge from the London club this season. But Hasselbaink says his former club need to buy another striker to close the gap on defending champions Manchester City.

The former Netherland international told Sky Sports.
"I think every club that is going to challenge for the Premier League needs three strikers.

"For me they [Chelsea] still have a gap to close on Man City, but they are improving and if they can keep on improving they can hopefully catch them. ‘[Sarri] has changed the way they play totally. They now play more in the defensive third of the opposition. "They have the ball 60 or 70 percent of the time – that was totally different last year. "You see smiles on the players’ faces again and they’re playing attractive, attacking football.’

Spanish striker Alvaro Morata has endured a difficult spell at Chelsea since joining the club from Real Madrid in the summer of 2017 and Hasselbaink added. "Morata will score goals.

"He is a confidence person. He is so good at getting behind the defence and he needs to keep on doing that.

"Everybody says 'he needs to do this and needs to do that' but he shouldn't concentrate on becoming something he is not. He should embrace what he has got. "He's not somebody who likes the contact of the centre-halves, but he shouldn't have to play like that. If he keeps on playing to his strengths I believe he will score a lot of goals."

Hasselbaink also had praise for Morata's club team-mate Olivier Giroud.

He said: "Giroud is different. He's never been an out and out goal-scorer but he makes other people around him play better which is something magnificent to have.

"Chelsea will need him during the season because there will be matches where they will need to play with Giroud up front."


The perennial champions have taken 28 points from their first 12 league fixtures to sit third in the top-flight four points adrift leaders Manchester City.

Ahead of Nigeria’s AFCON qualifier against South Africa on Saturday, Ahmed Musa has said that Super Eagles are in SA for the three points against Bafana Bafana.

The Stand-in Captain of the Super Eagles, Ahmed Musa, on Friday said that the Nigerian national team would not play for a draw in South Africa.

The Super Eagles are scheduled to play the second leg of Group E top-of-the-table clash with South Africa at the FNB Stadium on Saturday.

Musa, in a statement signed by Demola Olajire, Head of Communication of Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), said that the Super Eagles are not thinking of simply gaining a point from the encounter.
