Politics / Re: How Nigeria's Economic Recession Is Affecting West Africa - ECOWAS by Aringarosa(m): 2:33pm On Oct 05, 2016
Ademat7:

Why?

Côte d'Ivoire economic plan The plan is based essentially on a vast programme to modernise and develop infrastructure, and on reforming key sectors such as agriculture – in particular coffee and cocoa, the latter of which Côte d’Ivoire is the largest producer worldwide, with about 35 per cent of the world’s production. Other key sectors include oil and gas, mining, finance and tourism. The government foresees that 60 per cent of the investment needed will come from the private sector.

Investors are already flocking to the country. Among the flagship infrastructure projects financed with foreign investment is the country’s largest hydroelectric dam in Soubré, in the south-west part of the country, built by the Chinese for a total of €360 million. Other key examples can be found in Abidjan, where the Swedish company ABB recently won the tender for the expansion of the Azito electric plant.

In March 2013, India’s Tata Steel announced it would form a consortium to finance the construction of a railway line from its iron concessions in western Côte d’Ivoire to the port of San Pedro in the south. In addition, President Ouattara officially inaugurated the Abidjan-Yamoussoukro motorway last December, which is financed in part by Arab investors.

France, the old colonial power, remains the largest foreign investor but Côte d’Ivoire is now eager to attract investment from other European countries, in particular the UK, and it expects that trade with the UK will double by 2015. This is why Prime Minister Daniel Kablan Duncan travelled to London in October 2013 for a bilateral investment forum, and another large investment event was held in Abidjan at the end of January, called ICI 2014 (ICI stands for Invest in Côte d’Ivoire).

President Ouattara has also made great strides in the international arena. As Chair of the Economic Community of West Africa (ECOWAS), he took decisive action along with France to counter terrorism in Mali last year. He is also a fervent advocate of economic integration among West African countries: “Our economies are too small to stand alone,” he recently declared in an interview with the BBC. “We need more integration to spur growth and development for all our people.”

My experience is that naira is not smiling at the moment. I paid through my nose for my apartment because of poor value of naira. Like ugosample earlier said "come prepared" if you must come. Hotel is expensive, renting an apartment in some areas is. Heard some areas are cheap though.

Souhaite la bienvenue.

Just to draw attention on what i emphasized earlier in my post, i mentioned that folks who have the intention of coming down should get their vaccination for meningitis and yellow fever up to date in the "carte jeune", to avoid spending needless sum at the border post. Thank God you were able to sort it out.

When you mentioned that you chose to remain in Marcory due to obvious security reason what do you mean ? I'm asking just so other intended travelers who would want to chose to live in other areas wouldn't be scared, cuz when it comes to security, every nook and cranny of the city has same blanket security. I'm guessing your choosing Marcory is due to the high concentrations of Nigerians and not for security as you mentioned.

Concerning the exchange rates, the Naira has been in a catastrophic fall in the last couple of weeks and if it continues this way, I'm afraid it's will soon be equal to the CFA.

Just in case nobody has told you, there's is a Nigerian restaurant in that same Marciry Remblais (Ify's place) where you can a good Nigerian dish.

Once again, welcome to abidjan enjoy your stay and remain blessed.

Thanks for your insightful analysis. I actually opened the thread but along the line, I got discouraged over the price of renting a house there. I was told I won't get a house anywhere in Abidjan at less than 25k nigerian naira monthly. In Bingerville and the other area you just mentioned, how much can one get a room self and how is rent paid there? I am a retiree on monthly pension of 46k which I expect will improve by end of this year. I plan to retire to Abidjan with my wife and two little kids. My question is this, can 100k take me to Abidjan by road and get me a one room self contain? In Bingerville, can we live on a 46k monthly pending when I get something doing like starting up a little business?

25k can get you a self contain (studio, that's the term for self contain houses here), but it all depends on the Area of town, places like bingerville are quite affordable to live.

As for the transportation, like several others have mentioned earlier, go to Maza-Maza, young shall grow park and make inquiry there as prices of things changes constantly in Nigeria, you can't be too sure. If you are traveling for this first time, your best bet of transportation should be the young shall grow group, this is because, they offer a direct route that is, Lagos - Abidjan direct. And they charge you not only for the transport fare, depending on the document you are using, they will include bribes they give to customs, immigration police, DLEA, etc. in there charges. Mind you, if you pay those charges, they will be responsible for the settling of these authorities I just mention, not you. And the most difficult boarders is the Nigerian SEME borders, other borders are easy. But i will advise anyone coming to come with their proper documents - passport, yellow card showing you have been given the meningitis and yellow fever vaccines shot, if you fail to do this, you will force to shell out unnecessary money on the way.

You can live of 46k/90,000cfa monthly if you are the type that economize, because foodstuffs are cheap here.

There are Nigerian schools for kids here and their standards are exactly what you will get in Nigerian, the teachers are Nigerians too and they operate the same Nigerian system of education. They aren't much expensive too.

I hope this helps.

For those of you seeking to migrate to the Ivory Coast for job purposes, listen carefully : It will be very difficult to get a job in Abidjan without understanding the official language which is French, Ivory Coast is not a developed country like Europe or America, it is an emerging economy just like you have in Nigeria, the only difference is that their politicians are less corrupt compared to what we have in Nigeria, they utilize their resources judiciously to run their country and by so doing, they have better Infrastructures, basic amenities like water, electricity, good roads, transportation are first class, it's nothing compare to what we have in Nigeria. Security is almost water tight, you will not see or hear of rampant robbery or kiddapping, for the exception of petty thieves and of recent the dreaded (microb) small bandit that seems to terrorise certain areas such as abobo and yopougon, but the security apparatus of the state are slowly but surely putting them out of business.

If you want to migrate for business purposes, that is to start a small scale to medium scale business, be prepared with your capital, depending on what you want to venture into, but you must come prepared. There are a lot of profitable business one can venture into if you are the type that is resilent and a risk taker.

Concerning accommodation, it depends on the area you want to live. Just like in any country of the world, the highbrow areas are expensive and middle and low class areas are less expensive. Example of highbrow area - under the Cocody commune, you have Riviera, Deux-plateau, Angre, Attoban, etc, these areas are expensive to live compare to areas like Yopougon, Abobo, Adjame, koumassi, Port-bouet. There are other cheaper areas if you are the type that prefers living in the outskirts of the city, places like Grand-Bassam and Bingerville are much much cheaper and aren't far from the urban areas.

If you are the type that is looking to import things from the Ivory Coast to Nigeria, I will advise you to seek knowledge from those Ejigbo women either in Nigeria or in Abidjan, these are the people who will tell you exactly what you can import from abidjan to Nigeria, because most of them where born in Ivory Coast, they know the intricacies of such business more than anyone else.

If you are into teaching of the English language, you might probably get a job, because they have a lot of expatriate community in Abidjan and most of these expatriate children attend English schools and as such a whole lot of English schools are springing up daily, most are seeking for English teachers and basic computer teachers to fill in, in their schools.

Food is about the most cheapest thing in the Ivory Coast, and they have Nigeria restaurants here too, run by Nigerians mostly Yoruba and Igbo women. They also sell Nigeria food stuffs in markets like Adjame and triechville. These are areas guys that willing to do business can look into, importing Nigerian food stuffs to sell here, cuz we have a lot of Nigerian communities here.

There are different category of Nigerians living here in the Ivory Coast, the expatriate Nigerians - these are the Nigerians that work with the African Development Bank (ADB), Embassies, Red Cross, Caritas, USaid, etc. Then you have the big to medium investors who are into industries, hotels, entertainment, motor parts, etc. Finally, you have the petty traders who are into electronics, used cloth/Shoes/bags/ business. Depending on whom you meet among these group, they will tell a different story about the country base on the level they operate.

All in all, before you migrate to a country where you know nobody or speak the language you have to come prepared, if you don't want to be stranded or have regret, this is not to discourage anybody who wants to come and try his or her luck. After all, when I left Nigeria to Ivory Coast for the first time, i could barely understand French, but today the story is different....

As for me, the Ivory Coast is my adopted home. I have travelled to a whole lot of country in Africa and Europe, but this is the only country i enjoyed living and doing business. Everything works here, if you have a good job or business, you will enjoy living in the Côte d'Ivoire - My personal opinion.

Gradually, the chicken is coming home to roost.
Where are the junkies who think our dear Buhari is infallible? Now that our overhyped president has gone back to his vomit, now that he has gone back to kiss the "ass" of the IMF to devalue our Naira to N290/ $, I hope you will withdraw your statement that he is a no-nonsense man. Where is your patriotism as a Nigerian when you become blind to a fault, when you give all you loyalty to a man and care less if the nation burn?
.
an anonymous writer said "is getting more interesting than I thought. Just within the last 7 days:
.
- we heard how Buhari's daughter attends a UK University , flew on first class when public officers were forbidden from doing same. When will this man fix Nigeria's education problems?
.
- Chief Lie borrowed nearly N14m for a trip to China, perhaps to design his masquerade gears, each of which he claimed will create 1000 jobs. He is yet to tell the world where on the planet a masquerade once created 1 professional job. He simply has no word or a sense of accountability to Nigerians regarding this hogwash. I saw in the news today an article credited to this demon regarding a bogus 200,000 jobs created somewhere in the blues.
.
- without preparing the nation, fuel price was increased 70%. This is the same deregulation they refused during the last administration.
.
- David Cameron said Nigeria is fantastically corrupt, one of the worst country in the world. In my terms, it's like calling someone a bastard. Buhari says he is not bothered as long as UK returns Nigeria's stolen asset. Like they did with Benin artefacts!? The Queen only said a Chinese envoy was rude... She has been barred from China!
.
- The other time, we were told Buhari went to China to borrow enough money to finance the budget deficit. They returned to tell the world that the trip was a huge success. Today it's another request for loan from the IMF (to finance the same deficit they have successfully financed from China?).
.
- dollar is now 290 Naira. Devaluation, deregulation, diversification, debt...all at the same time. What exactly is the plan of this government? The same government that surreptitiously issued a statement about unpacking the NNPC even without thinking about the legislative ramifications of such views.
.
Next week, Buhari will clock one year as the president of Nigeria. I am still wondering how he will convince Nigeria on his achievements. Jobs? Energy? Transport? Commerce? Corruption? To his followers, Diezeani and Dasuki and Saraki are everything that is wrong with Nigeria! Anything like an holistic approach to fight corruption?
.
I just hope Nigeria's sad news will stop at some point. Perhaps, now?"
.

Keep quiet if you don't know what you're taking about. Your country is operating a Federal System of Government. In this system, the States have their own Justice System. If Amaechi is accused of stealing FROM Rivers State, it is up to that Government to Prosecute him. The only way the Center can come in is if he broke Federal Law too. None of you has accused him of stealing from the National Treasury, you've only accused him of stealing from State coffers. In that instance, it is up to the State Government to grant you the Justice you are seeking.

Stop exhibiting your ignorance on a public forum, it's obvious you are ignorant. So pls do yourself a favour by shutting your bucal cavity.

Brainless Buhari/APC govt is running a cynical Govt of suffering and fear...!!!, sincerely, dis govt is encouraging violence and chaos in the land."

Mumu...Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo says the new pricing of Premium Motor Spirit is not an issue of subsidy removal but rather a foreign exchange problem.

This is policy flip flop....Technically there is no deregulation yet. NNPC will also import but not the same huge volume of about 50% it is doing now. yet. It's a proof once again that this govt does not have the balls for a full scale deregulation for political reasons. It's still a manipulation of policy because of fx uncertainties.

Nigerians we are in for it, as dollar fall, fuel price may increase and with Buhari dollars policies....hmmmmm.

Because of wrong economy policies, oil producing country "Venezuela" Is Falling Apart,
May our country not turn out like that, Toilet Paper economy!

Hey I guess APC supporters hypocrisy just hit the all time high! Hence they tagged GEJ "father of corruption"....
