France has returned a sacred talking drum looted during its colonial rule in Ivory Coast, marking a symbolic step in the slow process of repatriating African cultural artefacts held in European collections. The drum, known as the Djidji Ayôkwé or “Panther Lion”, was seized by colonial authorities in 1916 and transferred to France in 1929. It was later displayed at the Trocadéro Museum and subsequently at the Quai Branly Museum in Paris. More than a century after its removal, the instrument arrived back in Abidjan aboard a specially chartered aircraft, where members of the Ebrié community — its traditional custodians — gathered at the international airport to welcome it home. The drum remained inside a large wooden crate labelled “fragile” as it was received by local chiefs and traditional dancers. The Israeli military said it detected additional missiles launched from Iran on Monday, triggering air raid sirens across parts of the country and sending residents to shelters as air defence systems attempted to intercept the incoming projectiles. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said it had identified the launches and that its defensive systems were operating to intercept the threats. People in affected areas were instructed to move to protected spaces and remain there until further notice. Sirens sounded in multiple locations following the detection of the missiles, according to the military and local media reports, with explosions heard in some areas believed to be interceptions. There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage. The latest alerts come amid an escalation of hostilities between Israel and Iran, with both sides exchanging strikes in recent days. |
United States (U.S.) Secretary of State Marco Rubio said on Monday that the world would be “a safer and a better place” once a U.S. mission targeting the government of Iran achieves its objectives. Speaking at an event in Washington, DC, Rubio said the U.S. was engaged in an operation aimed at what he described as “the world’s largest hostage taker” and “the world’s leading sponsor of terrorism,” referring to Iran’s ruling authorities. Rubio said the goals of the mission included eliminating Iran’s capacity to launch missiles and dismantling the infrastructure behind its weapons program. “The goals of the mission are clear,” Rubio said. “Destroying the ability of this regime to launch missiles, destroying the factories that make these missiles and destroying their navy.” Rubio said the United States was making steady progress toward those objectives. “We are well on our way to achieving that objective,” he said. “Every single day this regime in Iran has less missiles, has less launchers, their factories work less and their navy is being eviscerated,” Rubio added. Rubio did not provide additional details about the timeline or scope of the operation. |
A social media exchange between Iran’s embassy in South Africa and a U.S. congressional committee has highlighted diplomatic tensions after South African President Cyril Ramaphosa sent condolences following the reported killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. The Embassy of Iran in South Africa said in a post on X (formerly Twitter) that it had received a letter of condolence from Ramaphosa after what it described as the “martyrdom” of Khamenei. “We received the letter of condolence from H. E. Cyril Ramaphosa following the martyrdom of Imam Khamenei. Iran and South Africa have deep-rooted friendship,” the embassy said. Iranian officials say Khamenei was killed on Feb. 28 during airstrikes they attribute to the United States and Israel. Washington and Israel have publicly confirmed the claim. The post drew a sharp response from the United States House Committee on Foreign Affairs, which reposted the message and criticised the South African leader. “No friend of the Ayatollah is a friend of ours. South Africa’s president is cozying up to the Iranian regime while grandstanding and enjoying American freedom in Chicago,” the committee wrote on X. The reference to Chicago appeared to relate to Ramaphosa’s attendance at a homecoming celebration for the late U.S. civil rights leader Jesse Jackson in the city. Ramaphosa has since left the United States and arrived in Brazil for a state visit at the invitation of Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, according to the South African presidency. South Africa maintains diplomatic relations with Iran and has often taken positions in international forums that diverge from Washington’s foreign policy stance, particularly on Middle East issues. |

XieXie:You may need to give it time for approval, keep tracking. Or email NIS or proceed to the selected centre on the day you are available for biometrics enrollment (which should be within six months of applying) for physical vetting of your application and which you reprint your application form afterwards when approval status shows 'vetted'. |
Greetings, Can anyone kindly explain the possible reason why the tracking portal for this attached application is no longer indicating that the passport is at the production stage after ticking up to that stage initially? Thank you.
|
XieXie:You just need to reschedule your appointment on the passport portal and ensure that you verify the status of your application prior to your appointment date: payment status should show 'paid' and approval status should show 'vetted'. |
Prince Niyi Olatidoye: The problem is multifaceted. The civil servants are myopic, in that they only listened to the voice of their bosses: the Senators, Governors and Commissioners. The type of education we received then was totally different from what we have today. In oversea, for instance, we were trained to be strong, self-reliant, and self-sufficient. We were not trained to collect gratification. During our time, I was the project evaluation officer for Ibese cement and we had call on China to do the feasibility study and built one million tons per annum that would made Ogun state the number one in cement production, but it was truncated because of greed of Late Chief Olabisi Onabanjo. Unfortunately, the military came and wiped them out. After that, Otunba Gbenga Daniel who knew nothing about the project, came 25 years after the project has been put together with so many effort, sold it to Dangote. This project would have fetched the state lot of billions but it was sold, because we are not enlightened, and we don’t look forward. Otunba Gbenga Daniel was naïve because he knew nothing about the effort that was put into it, and that was how the glory of this state was giving away, because it was signed, sealed and delivered. Ibese formation was the best cement and was even there before Ilaro trading company. I kept the report of the project for posterity. I have a documentary I have written and I have used it to write a book which I planned to update now. All these things will be there for posterity. The people in school now are not well baked and groomed, they are servile. https://thesparklightng.com/2021/03/14/how-ogun-under-olabisi-onabanjo-lost-opportunity-to-be-number-one-in-cement-production-niyi-olatidoye/

By Oluwatomisin Amokeoja Many effortlessly noticed four Nigerians, especially David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, in ‘Coming 2 America’, the sequel to ‘Coming to America’. But very few observed a US-based Nigerian child actor, Ayorinde Kemit, who the movie also starred. Five Nigerians, including Davido, Ayorinde, Rotimi Akinosho, Lola Adamson and Olaolu Winfunke, starred in the movie premiered in the United States of America on March 4. For one of the featured songs, Nigeria’s Damini Ogulu, also known as Burna Boy, teamed up with John Legend to feature Nile Rodgers in a song bearing the same title with the movie. Koroba by Tiwa Savage; Waka Waka by Augustine Kelechi alias Tekno and Assurance by Davido also made the list. Excited Ayorinde, after discovering that she made the final cut of ‘Coming 2 America’ also premiered in Nigeria on March 5, took to photo-sharing app, Instagram, to post visuals of her scene and name among the list of cast. https://thenationonlineng.net/meet-the-youngest-nigerian-in-coming-2-america/
