SSANU Suspends Strike The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) has announced the suspension of its week-long strike. The suspension of the strike is contained in a statement issued in Abuja on Friday and signed by the association’s National Secretary, Mr Promise Adewusi. It said that the decision to suspend the strike was informed by the Federal Government’s compliance with the association’s demands. “Following substantial compliance to our demand for the payment of August and September salaries of our members which is the reason for our current national strike action, we hereby suspend the strike and direct all our members to return to their duties with effect from Monday, the 14th of October, 2013.” The statement thanked members of the association for their solidarity, adding that the non payment of the salaries of its members for work done would not happen again. |

ASUU Strike: Nigeria lecturers vow to continue strike as FG stops salaries. The government’s new directive starts from September. The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, is “unshaken” by the federal government’s recent ‘No Work No Pay’ policy on the striking lecturers, PREMIUM TIMES has learnt. The federal government’s decision to stop paying the lecturers’ salaries was confirmed by the university lecturers after their Thursday meeting. Rising from ASUU’s zonal conference in Abuja on Thursday, the union responded to the ‘No Work No Pay’ strategy by stating that it had resorted to other welfare strategies to cope with the effects of the policy. “The Federal Government has through the National Universities Commission, directed universities to stop the payment of our salaries effective September this year and since then our salaries have not been paid,” Clement Chup, ASUU Zonal Chairman in Abuja, said. “Part of (our) welfare strategy, involve distributing food items, giving out soft loans and cash advances to members,” he added. The union is currently on an over three-month-old industrial action over the failure of the government to implement the 2009 agreement it reached with the lecturers. Festus Iyayi, a former ASUU President, said that the union remains resolute in the face of the government’s latest strategy. “I can confirm that the federal government has stopped payment of the salaries of academic staff,” Prof. Iyayi, who led ASUU in 1986, told PREMIUM TIMES. “This ‘get them to capitulate by starving them’ policy has been employed by government in the past. It did not work. Our members are ready to make whatever sacrifices are needed to make government honour agreements,” he added. The federal government’s latest move may have pulled the plug on negotiations between it and the striking lecturers. The government toed a similar path during the 2009 ASUU strike but the lecturers stuck to their guns, with then ASUU President, Ukachukwu Awuzie, stating that “they would not allow the issue of salaries to dampen the desire of its members to seek fundamental changes in the Nigeria’s educational system |

ASUU Strike: Govt. Begins No Work, No Pay. October 11, 2013 After three months of fruitless negotiations between the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, and the federal government, over the strike embarked on by the union, strong indications have emerged that the Federal Government has commenced the implementation of the “No Work, No Pay” rule. A reliable source at the National Universities Commission, NUC, according to Vanguard, said that the government has passed a directive to the various universities governing councils to stop payment of salaries of the striking lecturers. Confirming this, yesterday, in Abuja after a zonal conference of ASUU, University of Abuja chapter, which took place at the Gwagwalada campus to review the nationwide strike, ASUU Zonal Chairman in Abuja, Mr Clement Chup said his colleagues were yet to receive their September salaries. According to him, “we have resorted to other welfare strategies to cope with the effect of the strike, particularly to contain the various attempts by government to break the resolve of the union. The Federal Government has through the National Universities Commission, directed universities to stop the payment of our salaries effective September this year and since then our salaries have not been paid. “Part of the welfare strategy, involved distributing food items, giving out soft loans and cash advances to members.” He therefore urged members of the public to ignore the rumour that the strike has been called off. He said: “Nigerians should disregard rumours making the rounds that the three months old strike has been called off”, adding that “the strike continues until the government demonstrates a positive inclination towards implementing the 2009 agreements and the 2012 Memorandum of Understanding signed by both parties.” |

ASUU strike: NUPENG — Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers, NUPENG, weekend, threatened stop distribution of petroleum products across the country if the Federal Government failed to implement the agreement reached with the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU. Though no specific date was fixed for the commencement of the soliarity strike, the union said the strike became necessary in view of the lingering ASUU crisis which the government had failed to resolve in the last three months. NUPENG President, Igwe Achese, who spoke at the union’s National Administrative Council, NAC, meeting, weekend in Lagos, said NUPENG was not happy at the crisis facing public university system in the country. He blamed the crisis on government’s failure to honour agreements, lamenting that this had led to the proliferation of strikes in nearly all sectors of the economy since the beginning of the year. According to him: “We appeal to government to implement agreement reached with ASUU so that students can go back to school. If the crisis in the sector is not resolved, we will soon direct our members to embark on solidarity strike.” Achese blamed the Ministry of Labour for failing in its responsibility to check the break-down and abuse of laws governing industrial relations practice in the country by employers including government. “The Ministry of Labour needs to be proactive if we must get these issues nipped in the bud. The ministry also needs to make sure that agreements reached or communiqué signed are implemented. “The ministry has a big role to play to avert strikes in the country. When unions begin to lose faith in the ministry that is when we have this kind of crisis. The labour minister should be firm in making sure that the right decisions are taken. “As it is now, every activity in the Ministry of Labour is in the office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, SGF, which ought not to be so. The role of the SGF should be to intervene only when the need arises.” It would be recalled that the NUT last week gave the Federal Government two weeks ultimatum to honour the agreement it reached with ASUU or face total shut-down of the education sector in the country |

As ASUU & FG are playing on the nigerian student's life/future,and FUNAAB also holds the merit list, and no one is sure of the time when the list will be out, i come think of how much i would have made if i av joined the #30k which i av kept aside 4 my acceptance fee to do business since August.or they want me scatter the money again so that i will rush 4 it later?anyway,i will be waiting patiently,i belief that our names is in the merit admission list by God's grace, best of luck great people and congratulation in advance. |
Crownofwealth1: pls, r u sure or u think so? Any idea how it's bn carried out in d past years?.yes from d experience in d previous year ,but some that risk it and did d online reg when 1st choice were invited last 2years was said to be admitted 4 political science/social science courses, though they risk it to do online reg when 1st choice candidates were invited, else they wont be considered as UI HAD never called 2nd choice DE.I Made same mistake last year by choosing UI 2nd choice, and FUTMINNA 1st.and risk my life 2 Futminna scored 50% post d.e but not admitted.so i waited 4 UI 2 Invite 2nd choice DE,But they didnt as after the first choice d.e online reg, the next was admission list, and i was told that ,thas is how they used to do.so my bro, just concentrate on ur 1st choice institution, but maybe, miracle can happen this year.best of luck! |
Crownofwealth1: Pls, anybody knows whether UI wil stil invite 2nd choice DE candidates to register online? In essence does UI consider 2nd choice DE aspirants too?.forget it, nothing for 2nd choice DE at UI.They only invite 1st choice for online reg |
Waiting patiently for d admission list.happy independence day Nigerian |
KENYA MALL ATTACK: “You’re A Very Bad Man” – 4yr Old Kid Confronts Gunman Who Gave Him Chocolate & Begged For Forgiveness Posted by: Deoluon September 24, 2013 A four-year-old British boy caught up in the Kenya mall massacre showed astonishing bravery by confronting a marauding gunman who ended up begging for his forgiveness. Elliot Prior, from Windsor, Berkshire, told one of the terrorists that he was a ‘very bad man’ as he protected his mother, Amber, who had been shot in the leg, and six-year-old sister Amelie. Incredibly, the attacker took pity on the family and bizarrely handed the children Mars bars before telling them ‘Please forgive me, we are not monsters.’ His story emerged as sporadic gunfire continued to ring out from inside the mall early today as Kenyan security forces battled Al Qaeda-linked terrorists into a fourth day. Despite Kenyan police assurances that they had taken control of the building, a security expert with contacts inside the mall said at least 10 hostages were still being held by a band of attackers, possibly as many as 13. Kenya’s foreign minister Amina Mohamed said ’two or three’ Americans and one British woman were among those who attacked the Westgate shopping mall in Nairobi. His mother, Amber, told of her family’s terrifying escape from Al Shabaab terrorists who butchered 62 people in the Nairobi shopping centre. The film producer had been queuing to buy milk in Nairobi’s Westgate Shopping Centre when the militants struck. She hid under a cold meat counter in the Nakumatt supermarket for an hour-and-a-half with her children beneath her before terrorists finally found them and shot her in the thigh. Elliot’s uncle, Alex Coutts, told The Sun: ‘They had a lucky escape. The terrorists said if any of the kids were alive in the supermarket they could leave. ‘Amber made the decision to stand up and say “yes”.’ ‘Then Elliot started arguing with them and called them bad men. He was very brave.’ After discovering the advertising producer was of French origin, the men began to plead with her and claimed that the Muslim faith ‘was not a bad one’.‘He told me I had to change my religion to Islam and said “do you forgive us? Do you forgive us?’, the mother told The Independent. ‘Naturally, I was going to say whatever they wanted and they let us go’. Bizarrely, the terrorists handed the children Mars bars before they fled with two other children, including a 12-year-old boy who had at first refused to leave his dead mother. The fate of 20 others who had taken refuge under the meat counter is unknown. The family’s escape is particularly astonishing in light of the indiscriminate slaughter of men, women and children throughout the mall after Al Shabaab launched their assault on Saturday. |
