The Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Ibrahim Tanko Muhammad, yesterday warned newly appointed judges of High Courts and Kadis of Sharia Courts to shun all forms of gratifications in discharging their legal duties.

The CJN who sounded the warning when he declared open the 2020 virtual Induction Course for newly appointed judges and Kadis organised by the National Judicial Institute (NJI), Abuja, admonished the judges to be proactive and device personal means of curbing “persistent delays in the administration of justice”, which according to him is a major bane in the nation’s judiciary.

He said, “My Lords, Ladies and Gentlemen, it is no longer news that much of the criticisms leveled against the justice delivery system in Nigeria are about persistent delays in the administration of justice, bias and wrong applications of laws. These acts are often not to the delight of litigants and court users as they often frown at the way services are rendered.

This piece summarizes my contribution to an African debate. From Johannesburg to Lagos, Cairo to Dakar, Kinshasa to Kigali, Nairobi to Accra, etc the debate on how Africa should respond to the global coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic is raging. At an African regional policy platform, I had expressed some of these (personal) views some weeks ago but have been encouraged by most members to circulate them in Africa beyond the platform.

This year 2020 begins a new decade that promises to be one of dreadful disruptions, with Africa holding the weakest end of the stick. In 2008/09, the global “great recession” was triggered by financial crisis in the US (world’s largest economy). Then, much of Africa was said to be decoupled from the crisis and muddled through without severe devastation of its economies.

The Nigeria Center for Disease Control declared this on Twitter, stating: “Twenty new instances of #COVID19 have been accounted for in Nigeria; 11 in Lagos, 3 in the FCT, 3 in Edo, 2 in Osun and 1 in Ondo.

“Two new passings have been recorded in Lagos and Edo State. As at 10:30 pm third April there are 210 affirmed instances of #COVID19 announced in Nigeria.”
