PoliticsSoldiers Kill Three Female Suicide Bombers In Maiduguri by Askubur(op): 10:36am On Nov 11, 2016
Soldiers in the early hours of
Friday shot three women strapped
with explosive device on their
bodies while attempting to invade
Maiduguri, an official said.
Explosions reverberated across the
city as two of the bombs went off
on the women, killing three of
them.
The police spokesperson in the
state, Victor Isuku, a deputy
superintendent of police,
confirmed the incident in a text
message sent via his office’s
WhatsApp handle.
“This morning at about 0530hrs,
three (3) female suicide bombers
with IED strapped to their bodies
were sighted by military patrol
team in Umarari village, near
Mulai towards Maiduguri”, he
said.
“They were promptly gun down
and the IED on two of them
exploded killing all three of them.
The unexploded IED on the third
was rendered safe and detonated
by Police bomb disposal Unit who
promptly mobilized to the scene”.
Boko Haram’s hostility, especially
suicide bomb attacks, has
increased since the release of 21
Chibok schoolgirls mid October.
The Borno State police
commissioner, Damian Chukwu,
recently blamed the increased
Boko Haram attacks on the coming
of the dry season, which, he said,
gives the insurgents ample access
routes to invade the city through
bush paths.www.premiumtimesng.com/news/headlines/215072-breaking-soldiers-kill-three-female-suicide-bombers-maiduguri.html
EducationBorno To Prosecute Parents Who Fail To Send Children To School by Askubur(op): 9:45pm On Nov 07, 2016
Borno State Government on Monday said it would prosecute
parents who fail to enroll their children and wards in schools.
“Any parent either out of ignorance or willingly refuses to send
his child to school will be made to face the full wrath of the
law,” Alhaji Kaka-Shehu Lawan, the Bono State Attorney
General/Commissioner of Justice said.
He told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Maiduguri that
government was already offering parents several incentives to
encourage them to send their children to schools.
The commissioner noted that it was lamentable that some
parents still refused to send their children to school in spite of
the incentives.
“The government has directed the Borno State Basic
Education Board (SUBEB) to mobilise all children of school
age to be enrolled in schools.
“It has also invested heavily in constructing new schools and
renovating those vandalised by Boko Haram terrorists in the
course of the insurgency, so as to provide conducive
atmosphere for learning”.
Lawan said that government had also introduced free school
bus services and other incentives to attract children back to
schools.
“Government has procured 150 luxury buses to provide free
ride to school children in Maiduguri and communities liberated
from the terrorists by the military.
“It has also introduced the provision of free meals, school
uniform and books in schools as part of the incentives to
retain students in schools.
“The governor is also looking at the possibilities of introducing
cash incentives to parents to ensure retention of children in
schools,” the commissioner added.www.dailytrust.com.ng/news/general/borno-to-prosecute-parents-who-fail-to-send-children-to-school/170491.html#7VDsIFE9oOD8RdRJ.99
PoliticsBoko Haram Kills Army’s Most Decorated Officer In Night Attack by Askubur(op): 5:50am On Nov 06, 2016
An army officer decorated by the authorities for his
courage in the fight against the terror sect Boko Haram,
has fallen in a battle with the insurgents.
Lieutenant Col. Muhammad Abu Ali died yesterday along
with three of his men while repelling an attack on a
location of 119 Battalion of the Army at Mallam Fatori,
Borno State.
Ali was, until his death, the commanding officer 272 Task
Force Tank Battalion.
Four other soldiers were wounded in the attack.
The troops however repelled the attack and killed 14 of the
insurgents.
The loss of Lieutenant Colonel Muhammad Abu Ali was a
big blow to the Nigerian Army as he has been described as
one of the finest and most courageous officer currently
deployed against Boko Haram.
Ali’s exceptional bravery and gallantry earned him an
accelerated promotion from the rank of major to lieutenant
colonel and was personally decorated by the Chief of Army
Staff, Lieutenant General Tukur Buratai at Gamboru Ngala
on September 9, 2015 during an operational visit.
His colleagues recalled the gallant role he played in the
recapture of Baga from insurgents.
That February 2015 battle is often cited in military circles as
one of the army’s fiercest-ever with Boko Haram.
He was also a key part of the capture of Gamboru-Ngala.
During that decoration, Buratai praised Ali for his “courage,
bravery and exceptional performance in the fight against
the Boko Haram terrorists.”
A soldier who served under him attested to his leadership
qualities especially in Baga.
“He led us with the T-72 when we advanced on Monguno
and Baga, and he collected those places,” he said of Ali.
The troops recovered one General Purpose Machine Gun
(GPMG), seven AK-47 rifles and a large quantity of ammunition from the defeated insurgents.

PoliticsBoko Haram Kills Five In Attack On Reopened Gamboru-maiduguri Highway by Askubur(op): 12:50pm On Aug 18, 2016
Boko Haram killed five traders in an ambush on a
highway in northeast Nigeria that was recently
reopened after coming under repeated attack
from the Islamist group, a military source said on
Wednesday.
A convoy of vehicles carrying Nigerian
immigration officials and a group of traders were
travelling from Gamboru, on the border with
Cameroon, to the city of Maiduguri when they
came under fire on Monday.
“Three (immigration) officers were hit and
injured in the fire exchange. The immigration
men drove off towards Maiduguri, leaving the
traders behind,” an army officer told AFP on
condition of anonymity.
The five traders had joined the official convoy
thinking it would be a safer way to reach the
Borno state capital than travelling the notorious
road alone.
The traders’ two trucks were looted and set
alight, Gamboru resident Umar Ari told AFP by
phone, also confirming the toll of five dead. The Gamboru to Maiduguri highway is a strategic
140-kilometre trade route in the region and
provides an important link with neighbouring
Cameroon.
The highway was closed for safety reasons at
the height of the Boko Haram unrest some two
years ago but was reopened by the Nigerian
authorities following a string of successes
against the militants.
“Since the Maiduguri-Gamboru highway was
reopened two months ago convoys of trucks
carrying goods and other vehicles conveying
traders have been coming to Gamboru under
military escort without any incident,” said
resident Ari.
Boko Haram, which seeks to impose strict
Islamic law in northern Nigeria, has been blamed
for some 20 000 deaths and displacing more than
2.6 million people since 2009.
A counter-offensive spearheaded by Nigeria
since January last year has recaptured swathes
of territory lost to the Islamist militants in 2014.
But sporadic attacks continue and security
remains a major concern in the region. https://www.today.ng/news/national/169036/boko-haram-kills-attack-reopened-gamboru-maiduguri-highway

BusinessInflation May Hit 17.4% As Costs Increase by Askubur(op): 1:19pm On Aug 15, 2016
Having risen to a six- year high of 16.5 per cent
in June, analysts said they expected inflation
rate for the month of July to rise further to 17.4
per cent which would be the highest in 11 years
as low foreign exchange supply and energy
shortage push costs higher.
Inflation had risen for the fifth consecutive time
in June reflecting higher costs of goods and
services that was triggered by a weaker naira
and higher fuel prices.
Since the commencement of the flexible foreign
exchange policy of the Central Bank of Nigeria
(CBN), the value of the naira had fallen to N350
from N197 which it had been pegged for 16
months.
The naira depreciated significantly in all the
forex market segments, as the anticipated level
of forex inflow from international investors has
not been forth coming.
With the shortfall in supply, the market priced in
the new uncertainty driving the parallel market
rate to a low of N400 before stabilising at N395. The average exchange rate in the interbank
market depreciated by 28 per cent in July from
June’s average of N232.85 to the dollar.
This had affected the prices of goods and
services in an import dependent country which
spiraled upwards.
According to analysts at Financial Derivatives
Company Limited (FDC), factors driving inflation
include the lower than expected supply of forex,
a weaker naira and sporadic supply shortages in
the energy market.
Likewise, analysts at FSDH Merchant Bank who
believed inflation would rise to 17.35 per cent,
said they “expect the increase to come from the
increase in the prices of food items and other
non-food items as a result of the depreciation in
the value of the naira.”
The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) is
expected to release the inflation rate for the
month of July 2016 on August 18, 2016 based on
the data calendar on its website. https://www.today.ng/business/167618/inflation-hit-17-4-costs-increase#
PoliticsI Am Qualified To Be President Of Nigeria – Ali Modu Sheriff Declares by Askubur(op): 12:36pm On Aug 15, 2016
Embattled factional chairman of the People’s
Democratic Party, PDP, Ali Modu Sheriff has
stated that he is qualified to be the President
of Nigeria.
Sheriff said this when he appeared on Sunday
Politics, a programme on Channels Television,
Sheriff said he has paid his dues in politics
and can serve in the highest office in the land.
The former Borno state governor also denied
ever promising to give the vice-president’s
ticket to anyone.
“I have never told anyone that I want to be the
president or run for the office of the president,
but I have a right. I am a Nigerian qualified to
be a president. Yes I have the right,” he said.
“I am a highly principled person. If as a
founding father of the All Progressives
Congress, I could walk out of the convention,
then you would know that I am principled.”
Sheriff also denied the report that he had the
intention of stepping down in 2018 in order to
pick the party’s presidential ticket.
“It is a pure lie. Absolute fabrication, I didn’t
discuss such with anybody. The party zoned the
presidency to the north, and northern Nigeria is
not for Ali Sheriff alone,” he said.
“The fact of the matter is that I have never told
anybody anything like that.” www.herald.ng/i-am-qualified-to-be-president-of-nigeria-ali-modu-sheriff-declares/?utm_source=nnd&utm_medium=twitter&utm_campaign=nnd
