The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has finally set up an eight-man investigative panel to look into complaints of preponderance of underage voters in its registers in Kano and Katsina States. The issue of underage minors forming a large chunk of the voting population in Kano State especially during the just concluded local council elections in the state has attracted public outcry with the main opposition party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), blaming the commission for failing to take decisive steps to sanitise the voter register. However, speaking while receiving a delegation of the Forum of State Independent Electoral Commission (SIEC) in Abuja, the INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, said the commission had constituted an eigh-member committee headed by a National Commissioner, Abubakar Nahuche, to investigate the allegations in Kano and Katsina States. He said the terms of references of the committee would be to ascertain if the voter register requested by the Kano State Independent Electoral Commission was actually used in the local council elections; to investigate wide spread report that persons below the statutory age of 18 years voted using INEC register. He also said the committee is expected to engage with stakeholders on issues relating on the use of the voter register to the election and to make any other recommendations that the committee might deem relevant to the assignment. The INEC boss, however, said the terms of reference do not include the probing of the Kano State local government elections which sparked off the public outcry. Members of committee are National Commissioner, Mrs. May-Agbamuche Mbu, Mike Igini (Resident Commissioner, Akwa Ibom), Kassim Giedam (REC- Adamawa), Yakubu Duku, Mrs. Rukayat Buni Bello, Paul Omokere and Jude Chikezie Okwuonwu. Earlier, the INEC boss had regretted the non implementation of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between it and the state election commission signed in 2012 which allowed for collaboration in areas such as capacity building, voter education, sensitisation and violence mitigation. Yakubu blamed the situation on lack of funds and the frequent change in the leadership of state election commissions. He expressed the belief that by collaborating with SIEC, the processes and outcomes of the local council elections which had become subject of heated discussions would be enhanced. The Chairman of the forum, Justice I. M. Akomas, while congratulating the commission for the reforms introduced in the electoral process, requested that SIEC be carried along in the application of electronic voting being packaged by INEC. https://www.today.ng/news/politics/84479/inec-appoints-man-panel-probe-underage-voting?utm_source=nnd.ng&utm_medium=twitter&utm_campaign=nigerianewsdesk |

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Alhaji Buba Galadima, has said that if he were to be the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the ruling party would have been deregistered because its handlers have refused to abide by the rules they set. Buba Galadima, who spoke with the Hausa Service of the BBC, yesterday, said if he were INEC, he would have seized APC’s certificate of registration because three years after its establishment, the party could not hold a single Board of Trustees (BoT) meeting, and that it has also failed to deliver on any of its promises. “APC does not deserve to be a political party; its constitution clearly states that the BoT, the National Executive Committee (NEC) and the National Working Committee must meet once every three months. “Now, since the registration of the party, was there any time that the BoT met? The party never referred to its founding fathers to gauge their mood and to know their feelings on whether it is on the right track or not. “I’m one of the nine people who signed the MoU for the establishment of APC based on certain agreements and ground rules. Sadly, none of these promises have been met and Nigerians cannot endure uncertainty anymore,” Galadima said. However, he expressed hope that the party would reinvent itself not necessarily around President Muhammadu Buhari. “I detest a situation whereby some people would hang the survival of APC on one individual; the party belongs to all of us, Nigerians. Politics and political power are transient and we must look ahead of time,” Galadima said. |
The family of Asta, the wife of the Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, has said that their daughter got married to the IGP publicly at the Sultan Bello Mosque, Kaduna. Senator Isa Hamman Misau had on Wednesday on the floor of the Senate alleged that the IGP married Asta secretly in Kaduna after allegedly impregnating her. But Nasiru Baba Saleh, a member of the family, told Daily Trust on telephone that Misau lied against their daughter and that he must prove the allegations in court. "Truly, we're seriously angry, because this is a girl that grew up in a responsible way. She got a very good upbringing, and we married her out peacefully. We see no reason why this man will come publicly inside the chamber of the Senate to say the man impregnated her before he married her. "What is his proof? This issue has gone viral on the social media. Both the mom and dad are crying. What kind of defamation is this? We have evidence. We have the pictures and everything. The Commissioner of Police and DC Operations were there. They all witnessed the wedding. The wedding was done publicly and marriage certificate was issued to them. "We'll have to sue him on defamation of character of the girl and the family. We'll do that within the week. We'll file the matter, and we'll go with all the evidence, including invitation cards and everything. He said Misau must come out to prove the allegation that Asta was married out with pregnant, saying "or was he the one that impregnated her, or who? He has to prove it. "Is he trying to say that we gave her out in marriage with pregnancy? What's the position of that in Islam? It is not done in Islam. We just have to take action. "We have all the evidence that the wedding was not done secretly. It held at the Sultan Bello Mosque, Kaduna where many people attended. The representatives of both families were present. The Commissioner of Police, Kaduna State, his deputy and others were there. "We won't take the matter lightly. This is an act of defamation of character, and it won't go like that. We'll take him to court for defamation of character. Let him come and prove his allegations in court. We have already briefed our lawyers on this."https://www.dailytrust.com.ng/misau-lied-on-our-daughter-s-marriage-to-igp-asta-s-family.html |
Serious error new owner of Etisalat made by branding the Network “9mobile” (Naija mobile) Read this error that might fade the dream of this company. First of all it is the goal of every company, be it large or small to dominate the market, develop, be the star and the giant among its competitors by winning the heart of the consumers through effectives and qualitative services/products that will satisfy that customer adequately. More especially Mobile Telecommunication with their growing in numbers and are highly competitive, each and every one of them doing its best it can to deliver qualitative and affordable services to capture the consumers. Among the dream of a mobile network company is to see itself expand by making the network service across the globe. Let’s take MTN as an example; MTN is a mobile network (Telecommunication) company owned by South Africans but a lot of people don’t know that maybe some until during the xenophobia attack in which Nigerians in retaliation give MTN notice to vacate Nigeria because Nigerians are also among the victims of that attack (I prayed it should never happen again AMEEN), so maybe until that time some knew “aahhhsooMTN belongs to south Africa” (Lesson 1 not to brand your company with your country name). But MTN has been successful since it can able to provide services not only in Africa but also in Asia and some other continents, same thing goes to Globacom Limited (GLO) a Nigerian multinational telecommunication company which is owned by Nigerians currently operates in four countries in west Africa namely Nigeria, Republic of Benin, Ghana and Cote d’voire, you see this is a success but is there anything “Nigeria” in the word “Globacom” NO.. I am not saying you should hide the ownership NO. Why will you brand your company with your country name with this high number of Racism, Tribalism among others. I knew “9mobile” (Naijamobile) has a dream of expanding and go even beyond Africa (which I pray they should and be successful in that AMEEN) as I said it early is the goal and dream of every successful company. Every country has enemy and Nigeria is a victim of having unpatriotic citizens such as Yahoo Boys, Kidnappers, drug dealers and many more who are bad ambassadors of this great nation Nigeria which is really affecting Nigerians in Diaspora and its investors. Ones they saw that word “Naijamobile” some negative thought will start to develop from the mind of this people who think ALL Nigerians are bad and are the same (which is not true). Note: whether the name of the country from which this Telecommunication Company is revealed or not in the brand, will always be known, but why do you need to put that, it doesn’t add-up. I personally did survey as a recent graduate of Computer Engineering including some of my little experience in Entrepreneurship I gain during YES-P (Youth Enterpreneuship Support Programm) and some of my critical thinking I used to do. I hope “9mobile” (Niajamobile) will find this write-up of mine and make positive action on it, I maybe also wrong as a human because of lack of understanding, is a natural thing. Nigerian Deposit Money Banks, DMBs, lost N2.19 billion to fraudsters through electronic channels in 2016 fiscal period, an official has said. The Deputy Governor, Operations, Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, Adebayo Adelabu, said this while unveiling a report on electronic frauds by the CBN on Tuesday. Speaking at the first stakeholders’ workshop on cybercrime organised by the Nigeria Electronic Fraud Forum and themed: “Tackling Enforcement Challenges under the Cybercrime Act”, Mr. Adelabu said that according to the report, 19,531 fraud cases were reported by banks in 2016 as against 10,743 recorded in 2015. A breakdown of the actual amount lost showed that across the counter transactions with a total value of N511.07milllion accounted for the highest losses. This was followed by Automated Teller Machine, ATM, transactions with N464.5 million, Internet banking N320.66 million, Point of- Sale, POS, transactions, N243.32 million, and mobile banking transactions, N235.17 million among others. Commenting on the workshop’s theme, Mr. Adelabu, who spoke on behalf of the CBN governor, Godwin Emefiele, noted that the challenges faced while enforcing the Cybercrime Act of 2015 had made a review of the Act imperative. “It is now about two years into the commencement of the Act, and so it is not too early to conduct a holistic review of its implementation,” he said. “Thus, your deliverables at this workshop should include a careful examination of the extent to which the obligations placed by the Act are fulfilled, and the general assessment of any challenges experienced in compliance with the provisions of the Act.” He expressed confidence that the workshop would proffer the much needed solutions and make practical recommendations for the effective implementation of the Act. On his part, the representative of the National Security Adviser, NSA, Sheriff Lawal, said the federal government will not deter in its resolve to enforce the relevant laws in dealing with perpetrators. He said, “Though the law has challenges but we must work hard to protect our ICT infrastructure.” “We are all connected to the cyber space for different reasons but we all need to stay safe and secure,” he added. https://www.today.ng/technology/cybersecurity/299926/nigerian-banks-lost-19bn-fraudsters-through-channels-2016 |

FILE PHOTO: Police in custody of a female suicide bomber identified as Zahra’u Babangida A 14-year old female suspected suicide bomber says Boko Haram leaders choose her to detonate an Improvised Explosive Device in Maiduguri because she refused to get married to their members in Sambisa Forest. The suspect is among three suspects arrested by the military when they allegedly came for a suicide mission at a military facility in Jakana in Maiduguri. The suspect told the News Agency of Nigeria(NAN) that she was sent on the mission to detonate the device because she refused marriage proposals from three Boko Haram terrorists. The suspect said she was abducted with her father, Usman, by Boko Haram insurgents in Gwoza, Borno, in 2013. She said she and her father were running to Mandara mountain for safety when they were abducted. The suspect said she and her father wanted to travel to Madagali in Adamawa where he normally sold cows before Boko Haram insurgents attacked Gwoza. “I have spent three years in the hands of Boko Haram. Three different Boko Haram (terrorists) had proposed to marry me and I refused. Two among them were commanders (amir). ”When I refused for the third time, one of the commanders became furious and threatened to kill me and my father. I told him I would rather die than marry a Boko Haram (terrorist). “So, after one week, they said since I have refused to get married, I should be taken to Maiduguri for a suicide mission. So, three of them held my hands and they injected me. ”Then, I never knew what was happening again. ”I was taken to a herbalist, who, after I regained consciousness, told me that I had been with him for 30 days. “He told me he was preparing me for a mission. So he gave me some water to drink. I don’t know what it tasted like but I drank it. So, he said they would come and pick me today. ”At about 7p.m. three Boko Haram (members) came with a male and a female. They were also recruited for the mission like me. “We spent one and a half days on the road to Maiduguri. It was when we got to Maiduguri that they strapped the bombs on our bodies. At that moment I knew that I was going to die, so I started crying. ”I was watching when the first bomber, a female, detonated her explosive close to a military checkpoint which killed no one but herself. The second, a male, was killed by the military before he could detonate his. “At that time something told me to remove my own IED and surrender which I did. I was surrounded by soldiers and policemen and I fainted. ”When I woke up, I discovered that one of the policemen at the checkpoint was a brother of my mother’s. I think that was the reason I survived,’’ the suspect said. Meanwhile, Maj.-Gen. Lucky Irabor, the Theatre Commander of Operation Lafiya Dole, said the suspects were being de-radicalised at the military detention facility. “We have quite a number of them here in our facility. We have been profiling them and making them feel comfortable. “So far, from their testimonies, they usually tell us that they were brainwashed by some sort of charms to commit suicide,” Irabor said. https://www.pmnewsnigeria.com/2017/05/14/boko-haram-sent-die-refusing-marriage-proposals-suicide-bomber/

There is nothing new about the lopsided DSS recruitment, the only new thing about it is that it favors the North and is happening under the 'self-righteous' Buhari presidency who many Nigerians expect to do away with all forms of prebendalism in government. Those who seek to make it look like a northern/ Muslim conspiracy are either being mischievous or are riding a wave of free-floating bigotry. Let us waive all pretensions, recruitment in every Nigerian agency is always conducted to favor the region/religion of the officials conducting it. The recent secret FIRS recruitment was lopsided in favor of the Southwest where the FIRS DG comes from. The recent CBN secret recruitment favors the South-south where the CBN governor hails from. The last recruitment by the Nigerian Prison Service favors the north where the prison comptroller comes from. Recently, Kemi Adeosun inaugurated an all-southerners management of the long-awaited Development Bank of Nigeria. It is shameful that all these are allowed to stand in clear violation of the principle of federal character. It is even more shameful that they are happening under a Buhari presidency. Sadly, reaction against the two has created more division than the real action. The ones that favor the south are condemned for what they are, as shameful tribute to prebendalism and nepotism, while the ones that favor the north are given the coloration of a regional and sectarian conspiracy. That's why Nigeria will not make any progress. CAN and its army of Christian/southern irredentists will protest at the DSS and Prison recruitments and look the other way at the CBN and FIRS recruitment that favors them. Muslim groups like MURIC and their legions of Muslim/northern irredentists will protest against the FIRS and CBN recruitment and ignore the other recruitments in their favor. Because, in Nigeria, justice and fairness is Muslim or Christian, Northerner or Southerner. We want justice but the kind that favors our ethnic and sectarian kith and kin. Injustice is fine and tolerable as long as others are the victims. But we cannot eat our cake and have it. We can either have a Nigeria where there are equal opportunities or a Nigeria where every group seeks to dominate the others in its own ethnic, sectarian or geographic corner at every little opportunity. *Ahmed Musa Hussaini wrote* |
