Phones / New Android OS: Android Go To Be Used On Cheaper Android Phones by Astutechris(m): 11:33am On May 18, 2017
Android Go was an unexpected announcement at the Google I/O 2017 showdown as many fans were expecting just the Android O details. The Android Go program shows the company is still working on improving user experience for devices at the low end category running on Android OS.

The initial move was the Android One program which we saw on some phones like the Infinix Hot 2. Android Go is a version of the popular mobile operating system that has been optimised for smartphones with 1GB RAM or less, thus primarily aimed at emerging markets. It is a stripped down version of Android as we know it, and comes with apps that have been optimised to consume fewer resources.

Android Go main Objectives

Android Go’s main objective focuses on three things: optimising the latest release of Android to run smoothly on entry-level devices, a rebuilt set of Google apps that uses less memory, storage space(10MB or less) and lesser mobile data and finally, a version of Play Store that will not only make the entire catalogue possible but will also highlight apps specifically designed for entry-level users. These three features will ship to Android O devices with 1GB or less memory starting in 2018.

It didn’t end there…

Google is also re-designing apps like YouTube Go, Chrome and Gboard to use less memory and are easy on mobile data. The company is making optimisations to the system UI and the kernel to allow an Android O device built with the Go configuration to run smoothly on as low as 512MB to 1GB of Random Access Memory.

This is generally seen as a very welcomed development given the rapid growth in low-end smartphones’ market. Devices with Android Go will have data management and savings in quick settings, and teaming up with carriers will let you keep track of how much data you’ve been consuming with the ability to top up. Meanwhile, the already existing data saving feature in apps like Chrome will be activated by default.

I don't believe in all these phone comparisons but as a user of the L9 I can say that the battery and the camera stands out.

I hear Infinix too is good, perhaps I'll try it soon.

Ya it is not all about specs. It comes down to user real experience, but since you haven't tried Infinix S2, it won't be safe to conclude that L9 Plus is better.

this comparison is not OK, Op must be a tecno promoter. OP did not talk about the engine of the phones.
Infinix S2 is powered by 64-bit Octa-core 1.3 GHz Cortex-A53 Mediatek 6573 processor, while tecno L9 plus is powered by Quad-core 1.3 GHz mtk Processor.
this difference is very significant, and it place Infinix s2 far above tecno L9.

Nice contribution shedy.
Phones / Tecno L9 Plus Vs Infinix S2 by Astutechris(m): 12:07pm On Apr 29, 2017
Tecno L9 Plus is the successor of Tecno L8 Plus and it is among the latest smartphones from Tecno Mobile.

On the other hand, Infinix S2 succeeds Infinix Hot S, and it is slightly a stripped down version of S2 Pro – the difference is just in the RAM and ROM. You can check out full comparison between S2 and S2 Pro here.

Both devices (Tecno L9 Plus and Infinix S2) are great and unique in their own aspects.

The Tecno L9 Plus fall into the phablet category with 6.0-inch IPS display and a screen resolution of 720 x 1280 pixels.

The L9 Plus comes with a power house battery of 5000mAh, which Tecno claims can give you up to 72 hours on a single charge under heavy usage.

On the other hand, The Infinix S2 is a compact device with 5.2-inch screen. It feature the same screen resolution as the L9 Plus. And of course, being smaller means it has more pixels per inch (244 ppi for Tecno L9 Plus and 282 ppi for Infinix S2), which technically means it has a better display.

Ya, but that’s only technically.

On the battery side, the S2 X522 comes with 3000mAh battery.

That is significantly lower than that of L9 Plus but you can expect a decent performance with that.

Tecno L9 Plus comes with Android 7.0 Nougat out of the box, while the Infinix S2 comes with Android 6.0 Marshmallow, but it is currently receiving Android 7.0 update.

The key advantage the S2 has over L9 Plus is the camera.

Not the back camera though because both feature 13MP back camera.

The Infinix S2 comes with dual front camera (13MP + 8MP), which puts it as a wefie (group selfie) smartphone.

What that means is that you can easily use it to capture group selfie without the need for a selfie stick, thanks to the 135 degree camera.

Tenco L9 Plus on the other hand, comes with 5MP front facing camera which is decent for selfie. Ya, decent is all you got.

Both devices comes with MTK processors 2 GB RAM, and 16 GB internal storage which is expandable to up to 128 GB with external micro SD cards.

Verdict
Like we already said, both devices are great. Choosing between the two boils down to a matter of personal preference.

If you like it bigger, then Tecno L9 Plus is for you. If you like it smaller, well, you know the one you should go for.

If selfie or wefie is a priority for you, then Infinix S2 is definitely the choice.

Check out the full side by side specs comparison of the two devices in the table here.
Phones / Infinix Begins Rolling Out Android 7.0 Update For Their Latest Phone - S2 Pro by Astutechris(m): 9:15pm On Apr 27, 2017
Infinix S2 Pro is the latest smartphone from Infinix (Infinix S2 is the version that was launched in Nigeria), and the device came with Android 6.0 Marshmallow pre-installed.

I believe that put many buyers off, given that we are now in the era of Android Nougat and it’s direct rivals (Tecno Camon CX and Camon CX Air) which was also launched the same period came with Android Nougat out of the box.

Well, the good news is that Infinix has started rolling out the Nougat update for Infinix S2 Pro. So if Android version is the excuse you have been giving for not getting the S2, you don’t have any excuse any more. wink

At the moment, we can only confirm this for Infinix S2 Pro, but we believe that the update will also be available for Infinix S2 soon, if it is not available already.

The official update started rolling out today and it is already available for some users via OTA.

Besides bringing Android 7.0 Nougat and XOS 2.1.0, here are some other exciting features to expect from the update:

Optimized interaction of fingerprint sensor to improve user experience
Optimized the visual sense and interaction of Magazine lock screen interface
Optimized the interface display of brand new Music 2.0
Optimized the file sending status display of XShare to improve the fluency of interface sliding
Optimized the multiple spots login experience of XAccount
Optimized the interface display of Phone Manager, deeply clear trash
Optimized te interface layout of XClub
Optimized the activation and responding time

How to Upgrade Your Infinix S2 to Android 7.0 Nougat

Like we mentioned already, the update is available via OTA (over-the-air).

To upgrade, simply go to Settings>>About>>System update and check for update.

The update is about 1.8GB in size so make sure you have enough data and storage space before you begin to download.

Phones / How To Download Infinix Updates Faster by Astutechris(m): 8:45pm On Apr 27, 2017
Recently, Infinix mobility released Android 7.0 Nougat for Infinix Note 3, Zero 4 and now Infinix S2 Pro as well via OTA, but if you are one of those using those devices, you may have noticed that for some strange reasons, the update takes a while to download. Like.... a very loooong time to download.

That is not normal at all. No reason has been provided by Infinix for that, but we are guessing it is due to heavy traffic.

Fortunately, there is a workaround for that.

All you have to do is to download the latest Infinix Software updater.

You get faster download speed and new servers with the new software updater.

You can find the download link here.

It may interest you to know there is another version of the latest smartphone from Infinix; it is Infinix S2, and that is what Nigeria gets, at least for now. This is quite disappointing cry cry

Recall Infinix S2 Pro was launched in Kenya some days back and it went on sell on Jumia Kenya. The device was supposed to be available in Nigeria today, but at the moment, what you will find on Jumia Nigeria is Infinix S2.

As you would expect, Infinix S2 X522 is the stripped down version (in terms of specs) of the S2 Pro.

Though no much difference between the two, as a matter of fact, the only notable difference between the two is that S2 comes with 2GB RAM and 16GB internal storage while S2 Pro comes with (3GB + 32GB). But that can make a lot of difference for some users.

All other features, including the dual front camera and the model number (X522) is the same.

An interesting thing about the device available on Jumia Nigeria is the price.

Though the Infinix S2 is inferior to the Infinix S2 Pro (in terms of specs), it cost almost as much as the S2 Pro in Kenya if you do the conversion.

No information yet as to whether S2 Pro will also be available in Nigeria along side S2 which is already available.

Phones / How To Check If Your Phone Has Google Assistant And How To Launch It by Astutechris(m): 7:01pm On Apr 23, 2017
Google Assistant is an intelligent personal assistant developed by Google and announced at Google I/O in May 2016. Unlike Google Now, Google Assistant can engage in two-way conversations.

Assistant initially debuted as part of Google's messaging app Allo, and its voice-activated speaker Google Home. After a period of exclusivity on the Pixel and Pixel XL smartphones, it began to be deployed on Android platforms in February 2017, including third-party smartphones and Android Wear.

Since this tool is being deployed in batches, it is possible that your phone may have this feature without you knowing, especially if you recently upgraded your phone.

This feature is only available for Android Marshmallow and Android Nougat users.

Luckily, checking if your phone has this function is quite simple and here is how to do it...

The first step is to go into the Google App on your phone.

When the Google App is open, tap on the menu section on the top right section and from the toggle screen select the ‘Settings’ option. If you have Google Assistant on your phone, you will see it as the first option in the settings page as can be seen on the photo below (left). If Google Assistant isn’t available, you will see the settings page without it as the right photo.

How to launch the Google assistant...

Luckily also, launching the Google assistant function is quite easy. All you have to do is to press and hold the home button on your phone and the Google assistant will pop up.

From the information we gathered, this function is available in the newly launched Tecno Camon CX but not in the Infinix S2 Pro yet.

Phones / More Leaks Suggest Stunning Brushed Finish For Gretel A6 4G Device by Astutechris(m): 9:38am On Apr 18, 2017
Gretel must not be the first name that comes to your mind when think of smartphones, but Gretel claims they must be the king of the affordable phones market. Because they are the only one who can offer only $69.99 for a 4G devices with front fingerprint sensor, which is the Gretel A9. Don’t believe it? check it online here!

Just today, the leaked news shows the upcoming Gretel A6 phone will be available in 2 colour options and designs for the back covers. The black version will come with the premium aluminum alloy matte metal back while the gold version will arrive in a stunning and glossy brushed finish on the aluminum backing, much like the LG G6 black version, which looks more sophisticated and visually appealing.

The rumored specs of the Gretel A6 includes a 5.5 inch HD IPS display screen from Sharp company, a 13.0 MegaAF Samsung camera and fingerprint sensor at the rear, 5.0MegaFF front facing camera, an AAC box speaker for a wonderful multimedia experience and a MT6737 from MTK at the heart of the system. Lastly, we hope Gretel will build a top-of-the-line flagship smartphone soon to please its buyers.

Phones / Gretel A9 Hands-on Review – Mini Show Of Elegance by Astutechris(m): 8:25am On Apr 18, 2017
As you already know, the performance of a phone doesn’t always depend on the specifications listed on the box, it’s more often about the user’s first experience and impression with the device. We were able to dedicate some amount of time to have a hands-on experience of this device, therefore it is safe to say that the new A9 device was impressive beyond what its spec-sheet listed.

A well customized user interface based on Android 6.0 (Nougat update coming on April) plus the new front-mounted fingerprint sensor, which is now part of the multi-functional Home key, add that to the new design and the variety of paint jobs and finishes, and you get a device that is surely worth checking out.

With all the great features, the Gretel A9 still has some short coming in few aspect (as always with every device out there). At the course of this review, we will point out the low and high sides of this device, before we go into that in details, let’s glance through is its specifications.
