Nairaland GeneralHow To Become A Successful Nigerian Blogger by atirenesam(op): 1:52pm On Feb 08, 2019
Making money as a blogger, irrespective of the means (Google Adsense, affiliate marketing, or general sales), is highly dependent on "TRAFFIC". Traffic is the number of people that visit your site per time. Therefore, get more traffic and you will earn more income as a blogger.
These tips will help you get started with good traffic and set you on a path to start earning as a Nigerian blogger.
TIP 1
SELECT A MARKETABLE NICHE: Write on topics that have a wide audience. If your blog-field is business, Nigerians prefer topics like “An African American Becomes a Billionaire at Thirty” to “Getting Series A and Series B funding”. We also love music, sports, culture, gossip, sex, politics, and exaggerated news. Point here is to write posts that people will be more inclined to read and share.
TIP 2: ENGAGE YOUR AUDIENCE
Your writing style has to be engaging. Don’t bore your readers with unnecessary words.
TIP 3: WRITE USEFUL POSTS
A useful post entertains, engages, or teaches. A useless post achieves neither of the three. Before you write a post, determine if it is useful to your readers or not
TIP 4: USE CATCHY TITLES
Your titles must not be too long: long titles are boring. Don’t out-rightly lie but a little exaggeration will do no harm.
TIP5: USE FEATURED IMAGES WITH POSTS
Featured images are pictures that are shown alongside posts. A featured image should also be catchy or engaging at first glance. Always use a featured image.
TIP 6: KNOW YOUR MARKET
Essentially, Nigerian bloggers should find niches within their country. It’s difficult breaking the European market. Whatever it is you want to talk about in the European market, there are tens of professional bloggers talking about it already. Nigerian audience relateS well with their bloggers; an up and coming blogger shouldn’t ignore the Nigerian market.
TIP 7: NAIRALAND
Nairaland still remains the best forum where Nigerian bloggers can increase traffic. Create topics on Nairaland, add links to your own blog, answer questions; however, try to keep the language semi-formal; post useful information (like news, how-to-do, fictional stories). Also, try linking up with your phone number on Nairaland. Traffic of 3,000 visitors every month can earn you a decent income from Google Adsense and Affiliate marketing. Remember that you are trying to connect with people and pass or sell useful information to them (Don’t ever sell on Nairaland—it’s illegal, but you can connect with potential clients through links to your site, Skype,or Whatsapp).
TIP 8: MARKET SIX TIMES MORE THAN YOU WRITE
When you first start your blog, you should probably have at least twenty posts; after that, write six times less than you market. That is, if you write and publish a post one day of the week, use the remaining six days to market the post. When I first started blogging, I would write and write and write—it’s exhausting. I didn’t take my time to study on-line marketing. I would later regret the action, as, after six months, I had so many posts but very little views or subscriptions. One popular post can earn lots of money for a blog.
TIP 9: ANSWER QUESTIONS ON QUORA
Quora gives you audience within and outside Nigeria. Nairaland is perfect; however, Quora can also be utilized. Clients can be gotten on Quora; Imagine charging a client $250 for website building, and getting even just a client per month—this is nice for a new blogger cum website designer.
TIP 10: USE IMAGES
Use images for special effects; however, do not think lack of content can be hidden in images. To source for royalty free images that can be commercially used, go to pexels.com—they have great images in a lot of fields.
TIP 11: WORK TOWARDS YOUR STRENGTHS
As an up and coming blogger, there will be so much you will have to know at the beginning. With intense studying and practicing, in three months, you will understand most of the necessary aspects and tools you need to understand. After this period, you must begin to specialize. Do not attempt to rehabilitate the whole of your blog in one day. Never forget that it takes only a post to turn around a blog. Work productively or you will always find yourself in a never-ending attempt to change one thing or the other on the blog.
TIP 12: ACCEPT THE IMPERFECTIONS
Only bloggers who began with a lot of money can have a smooth blog in a very short time. Remember that a blog does not have to be smooth before it makes money—it only needs to have a lot of traffic. Work towards the “money generators”—actions that will almost always generate sales. It might take 4 years before you have the outlook that you really desire on your blog; this however does not stop you from making money from it. Note: When your blog begins to grow in audience and you earn income, you will have the capacity to hire professionals and freelancers to make blogging easier.
TIP 13: FIND THE TIPPING POINT
The tipping point for blog A isn’t the same for blog B. Find what will actually increase audience and do it. Remember to work smartly by checking through what other successful Nigerian bloggers did. The trick isn’t to copy their methods hook line and sinker (except if it will work for you—hook line and sinker); the trick is to pick methods that have the highest chances of making you a successful blogger.
TIP 14: TRACK YOUR PROGRESS
This is sound advice not popularly preached. Always track your progress with Google Analytics. Google Analytics is an app—or so, where a site’s visitors and details like location of visitors, posts read, pages opened can be tracked. The importance of this is that, not only will you have information about your site’s growth, information on most read posts and least read posts will also be available to you. Such information will give you knowledge and direction of the kind of posts you should write. Google Analytics is free and you can subscribe for it here: https://analytics.google.com/analytics/web/
TIP 15: BE CONSISTENT
Write according to schedule. If you decide to release two posts per week, do so. If you plan on writing seven topics on Nairaland every day, do so. If you are consistent, the results will show accumulatively. Don’t go on Nairaland today, only to visit it three months later. Stay and work hard and consistently.
I’ll leave you with these fourteen tips; however, if you want more, or if you are looking for means to grow your blog and earn an income from it, you can read our post via the link below.

We will be releasing tips that will attract clients and sales. Here is a teaser: A Nigerian writing freelancer will most likely not get a single writing job on freelance platforms if he/she uses, the Nigerian identity, irrespective of the educational or professional qualifications. Why? Clients on freelance platforms like Upwork and Fiverr do not trust non-native English speakers (especially Africans) to write for them. How can this barrier be broken?
