naptu2: How could it have been solely Buhari's government, which was in power for only 20 months, that was responsible for the setback? Was it Buhari that gave contracts to Coscharis to import BMWs for the All Africa Games 2003, rather than PAN? Was it Buhari that imported Volvos for the 1973 All Africa Games? Was it Buhari that instituted SAP? Get real. How many assembly plants were in Nigeria in 1973? I don't know myself, any help will be appreciated. By 2003, please truthfully tell us the, the physical and technical situation of PAN. Was Pan even doing any assemble or just importing cars, that were resold? Also before SAP was instituted in 1986 by IBB, the damage was done already in many manufacturing facilities. They were so behind on payments, no international supplier wanted to touch any Nigeria business. |

naptu2: It's a progressive thing. We had a similar policy in the 1970s and 80s (unfortunately, successive governments did not follow through on it). Basically, what you do is:-
1) Encourage car companies to set up plants here. Some will assemble CKD no doubt, but
2) With time, discourage CKD. This was one of the advantages that PAN had over VON. VON usually assembled Completely Knocked Down kits (CKD), while PAN had many indigenous manufacturers that manufactured and supplied them with parts (spark plugs, tyres, mirrors, etc) to the extent that PAN could claim (by the late 1980s) that it made Peugeot 504 cars that were ninety-something percent made in Nigeria. This was why VON suffered more from the implementation of SAP than PAN did.
3) The nigerians that will work in these plants will earn an income and get expertise and income that could enable them to set up on their own in future. Why not name the government responsible for the major setback. Yes, tell people Buhari was responsible, with his import license /currency restriction policies. That was the beginning of our manufacturing malaise. 18 months of his closed border and one man show, caused so much damaged it took almost 30 years to fix |

Nicklee: To arrive at these numbers, I took average monthly production (pretty fine data resolution) and calculated how much dollars volumes we sold each year. For adjustment for inflation, I used 2.5% annual $ inflation rate. To put inflation adjustment in perspective, $1.00 in 1999 is equivalent to $1.44 in 2014. When adjusted for inflation, the numbers are $488.8B vs. $594B for Jonathan vs. Yaradua+Obj+Abdusalami+Abacha combined. The numbers are what they are because oil price has risen almost 7-8 folds during this period, nearly an order of magnitude increase. In addition to price increase, Nigeria's crude oil output has also increased. I am hoping we can start asking tough questions, we'd continue to be hoodwinked. My question again is simple: even with 2.5% annual inflation adjustment, the numbers are $488.8b vs $594b. Does the investment in Nigeria in the past 5 years add up to ~$500B? Your graphic chart says too little. You need to provide your monthly production averages and prices, let's do our own comparison. |

Justcash: 8. The re-emergence of MEND as a political tool, just as BOKO HARAM, will encourage the perception of militancy as an effective tool for political dominance. The philosophy behind MASSOB, OPC and other smaller groups will change and they will adopt destruction as a tool for political agitation at the ethnic level. At the moment, this perception is salient.
9. As usual, after the military approach to militancy has failed, they will be called to a round table, and the conditions that will be tendered will change the political system in Nigeria. This will be strongly opposed by the ethnic group that will see such a move as a means of diminishing their dominance.
10. Global political bodies will surely intervene to stem the impending anarchy, especially those with their eyes on the Nigerian economy.

This is because in GEJ's case, it will be a case of resistance to change from a powerful party (PDP). The bulk of the consequences of APC's loss will be from the Northern Oligarchy due to their antagonism towards the political status quo. In other words just the same situation as we currently have? |

Justcash: I am writing this piece without political affiliation. I foresee some horrifying occurrences if Jonathan is voted out of power in 2015.
1. AN ENERGIZED MEND WILL RETURN TO THE CREEKS WITH RENEWED VIGOR TO DESTROY NIGERIA ONCE AND FOR ALL
2. I ADVISE NIGERIANS TO BRACE UP FOR ECONOMIC DOWNTURN, BECAUSE IN A FEW MONTHS AFTER THE LOSS OF GEJ, OIL PRODUCTION WILL BE REDUCED TO ZERO AND NIGERIA'S ECONOMY WILL TAKE A TUMBLE
3. THE NEW GOVERNMENT WILL BE BUSY FIGHTING MILITANCY FOR THE DURATION OF THEIR TENURE, JUST TO STABILIZE THE ECONOMY AND FIND FUNDS TO EMBARK ON DEVELOPMENTAL PROJECTS
4. THE WAR IN THE NORTH EAST WILL BE A JOKE COMPARED TO THE WAR THAT WILL TAKE PLACE IN THE NIGER-DELTA. HAVING LEARNT FROM BOKO HARAM, MEND WILL CAPTURE AND CLAIM VITAL (OIL HUBS) TERRITORIES
5. THE DEBT PROFILE OF NIGERIA WILL INCREASE TO AN UNPRECEDENTED LEVEL DUE TO GOVERNMENT'S RESORT TO BORROWING AND SHORT-FALLS IN THE ECONOMY
6. NIGERIA'S GDP WILL TAKE A TUMBLE
7. THE FIGHT AGAINST CORRUPTION BY THE NEW GOVERNMENT WILL BE VIEWED FROM AN ETHNO-RELIGIOUS ANGLE AS A WITCH-HUNT, AND ETHNO-RELIGIOUS DIVISIONS WILL WIDEN
8. THE THREAT OF DIVISION WILL BE MORE APPARENT THAN IT HAS EVER BEEN AS COUNTER-MILITANCY SOLUTIONS WILL BE ADOPTED BY NIGERIAN ETHNIC GROUPS
9. I SEE A NEW REGIONAL AND POLITICAL SYSTEM BEING PROPOSED TO REDUCE ETHNIC AND RELIGIOUS BASED SUSPICION, WHICH WILL BE OPPOSED BY A CERTAIN REGION
10. NIGERIA WILL BECOME MORE EXPOSED TO FOREIGN INTERFERENCE
Most Nigerians don't know how dicey the political situation in Nigeria is. Nigeria is in a stalemate. 2015 will indeed redefine Nigeria in all ramifications. I PRAY FOR MY DEAR COUNTRY. Can you offer a more detail explanation on numbers 8,9,10. Also, what would you be doing now on Nigeria government papers. Are you buying, selling or holding your positions. |

playboy19: Good to know that we both agreed on the difference between an import permit and a FG allocation. Now this brings us back to the bone of contention. Which, if the allocation and subsidy is 'now' restricted to only these 7 companies, then how does the other companies 'now' importing independently and those who didn't get allocation before the subsidy uproar, how do they make profits? If they truly make profits, then whats the essence of the subsidy in the first place?
Moreover, if we can settle the able question, then you'd understand why i said the system was created with full corruption in mind, as there was no real need for it in the first place. It is a compensation scheme for the lobbyist. It is no surprise how all the indicted people were the ones in the room during the 'friends of Jonathan' campaign fund-raising in 2011 and why nothing has been done with the recommendations from the subsidy committee. People make profits because they get their petrol to places where Nigerians pay 120, 140 and 170. Also, the number of companies are not restricted to 7, I don't know why you're implying something, that's not correct. Because government decided to set an artificial price of N97. That's why, people gaming the system, can import without seeking subsidies and sell at 140. Now, this is not fixed, because the price of crude plays a huge role in most people's calculation. When crude falls blow $90 dollars a barrel, Nigeria's local pump price is actually more expensive. Sooner or later we will come to our senses in this country. If current projections are correct, Nigeria local consumption will hit a Million barrels per day in 2025. Are we planning on staying this same course? |
Politics › EXCLUSIVE: Dokubo-asari Threatens To Go Violent On Lai Mohammed Over $9.3m Arms by atlwireles(op): 10:54pm On Oct 17, 2014 |
Ex-militant and leader of the Niger Delta Peoples Volunteer Force, NDPVF, Mujahid Dokubo-Asari, hinted at what appeared a spectre of violence Wednesday, with a threat of lawsuit or “self-help” against Lai Mohammed, the spokesperson of the All Progressives Congress, APC, for claiming he helped transport $9.3 million cash for arms purchase in South Africa. Speaking to PREMIUM TIMES exclusively Wednesday, Mr. Asari said he will adopt a civilised response to Mr. Mohammed by first suing the APC spokesperson for his remarks. He however warned that should the courts fail to deliver justice, he will resort to self-help by using his hands and any other means to deal with Mr. Mohammed. “After all the South Africa People have given the names of people on the plane and if by next week we go to court and the court is being manipulated not to give me justice, I will resort to self-help,” he said. “I have the capacity to resort to self-help. I will not give anybody any apology because if a man has mouth to malign me then I can use what I have to fight for myself.” Asked to clarify on the nature of self-help, the NDPVF leader said, “When the time comes you will know. The man doesn’t have the right to malign me. If a man has the right to use his mouth and hand to malign me and libel people, and any other man has the right to use his hand and any other means to get justice.” Mr. Asari’s threat followed unsubstantiated claim by the APC listing him as one of two Nigerians who travelled alongside an Israeli, with $9.3m cash, for arms purchase in South Africa. The South African government confiscated the huge sum as “proceeds of illegal transaction”, saying it was not declared at the airport. Authorities there, like the Nigerian government, have refused to release the names of the two Nigerians who took part in the failed deal. In an earlier press release, the APC spokesperson, Mr. Mohammed, quoting reports by some blogs, alleged that Mr. Asari was one of the unidentified Nigerians on the private jet that ferried the cash to South Africa. Mr. Asari denies being part of the trip. Speaking to PREMIUM TIMES, the former militant leader said he had not been to South Africa since 2002, and challenged journalists to confirm with that country’s embassy in Nigerian if he was granted visa to travel. He said he was being targeted because of his support for President Goodluck Jonathan to secure a second term in office. “So the onus of proof is on him. I will fight him with any means available to me. He manufactured a lie against me, and he orchestrated it,” he said. “If they want to win an election they should go and face Goodluck and win election not to pull down GEJ supporters.” The NDPVF leader said his traducers failed last year to silence him after they alleged that he was a sponsor of the Boko Haram sect. He claimed his critics went to Cotonou, the Benin Republic capital, and sent reports to INTERPOL alleging that he was a leader and sponsor of the sect. “They failed last year in November. I went to the SSS on my own. The next one (they said) I’m in South Africa for arms and for money laundering which are international crimes. After that they brought Rex (his younger brother) picture and immediately they transformed Rex to Mohammed Yusuf with Ayo Oritsejafor and that we are there together,” he said. “How long will they continue to malign me? Whatever means I have to reclaim my name and stop them from disturbing me. Anything that will redeem my name, I will do it.” He also lambasted a former Head of State, Muhammadu Buhari for showing interest in the 2015 presidential race. Mr. Dokubo-Asari, who spoke to this newspaper few hours after Mr. Buhari formally signified his intention to contest the presidential election on the ticket of APC, said the former head of state who had contested for the position on three previous occasions, would fail in his fresh bid and would be disgraced. “Buhari declared for presidency, he will fail as he always fails, this time he will fail more. He has always been disgraced,” he said. Mr. Dokubo-Asari, a die-hard supporter of President Goodluck Jonathan, alleged that the former head of state stage-managed the assassination attempt on him (Buhari) last August, asking, “Someone who has staged-managed an assassination on his life what else can he not do?” He regretted that because of the incident, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aminu Tambuwal, demanded his (Dokubo-Asari) arrest even though he was not in any way involved in the incident. According to him, it was even more painful that the Speaker never called for the arrest of prominent northerners who had at different times made inflammatory remarks about the nation. He added, “Buhari staged-managed an assassination attempt that killed over 100 people in Kaduna after that they produced somebody. Anyone who has been involved in the military activities will know when something is stage managed. “His own story indicted him and roped him in. In any civilised country, he will be arrested. He said the bombers chased him until they rammed into his car instead of his car to be badly damaged it was people farthest away from the bomb that died or had more damages. Buhari came down. “Anyone who knows the story of bomb blast, anybody at the vicinity of a blast will be evacuated because there might be a secondary explosion and the second explosions can be more deadly. And Buhari came down in his immaculate white. He was not afraid. Suddenly, somebody just appeared and said they caught the person that planted the bomb and he said it was Asari that sent me (and that) he gave us N5million. Where are the rest four people?" www.premiumtimesng.com/news/headlines/169652-exclusive-dokubo-asari-threatens-to-go-violent-on-lai-mohammed-over-9-3m-arm |

playboy19: I'm only replying this for the sake of those reading this or will be reading in the future. Don't get people thinking that an import permit is the same thing as FG allocation. They are 2 different things entirely. Import permit means, go ahead and import your own fuel, while a FG allocation means, please import fuel on behalf of the government and we pay you subsidy. Which is only restricted to 7 companies at the moment. That's the difference.
Secondly, it wouldn't be wise to deregulate the price of product, it will only mess up the downstream industry the more. Plus subsidy didn't create any corruption, rather, the whole subsidy 'scam' was created out of sheer corruption. We shouldn't make the impression that the system created corruption, when in truth, the whole system was created with minds full of corruption. To perpetuate it in full scale without consequences. Firstly I used the word PPRA permit. I expect people to know, it comes with a certain allocation quota. Secondly, we have two different understand of the events in Nigeria. I believe subsides created corruption. Who does not want free government money. Until, we change the price discrepancy, nothing will happen. |

VolvoS60: ^^^^ On the contrary sir, the bolded part of your post is central to the discussion. The source of the product IS material to the discussion.
Why would Dangote buy dollar denominated crude oil from another country and sell it here in Nigeria for local consumption? What would be the justification? (Apart from supernormal profits) If the government sold crude oil to the NNPC at cost price plus a mark up (for opex and other costs) there would be no need for any 'subsidy' and all this nonsense would stop.
Let me remind you that another poster on this thread said there are a number of oil importers who import oil without any government subsidy. And according to this poster, these importers still make a tidy profit. Is this poster wrong? Because if he is right then your argument just got blown out of the water. Again.
The solution is staring us in the face. Build the damn refineries. Nigeria is not selling crude at cost plus markup. The Nigerian government has resolved to sell crude at the international price. Please get over that. Before Obj changed the price formula, NNPC would not account for their 445,000 barrels. Thou illegal, I have heard companies import without PPRA permit. Guess what, petrol is 120 in my area, that's the average, those in Lagos buy at 97, most Nigerians do not. There are places in this same country where petrol sells for N140. That's why this subsides joke must be stopped. So, importing directly without subsides has an upside to it. Just don't get caught. Scarp PPRA and allow people buy, produce and sell petrol for whatever price, the market will support. This one single action will fundamentally transform, the down stream sector. Also, the structural defect in governance and their inefficiency plus corruption this subsides regime has created will disappear. The social cost will be minimal and limited. |
