Causes of hearing loss in children.
It will be very necessary that we take some time to share on the causes of hearing loss in children. Children as the say are the heritage of the Lord and all efforts should be made to give them a good beginning in life so that they can enjoy a better future
Glue ear, is the MAJOR CAUSE OF HEARING LOSS IN CHILDREN
A child is said to have glue ear when the middle ear is filled with fluid instead of air. It is the building up of thick, sticky fluid behind the eardrum for a long time that causes the glue ear. This fluid usually doesn’t bother children. In most cases, it goes away on its own.
Glue ear is a common childhood disorder and the major cause of acquired hearing loss in children. About 75% of children do have glue ear at a given time between ages of 0 – 18 years Children are more prone to middle ear infection due to the nature of their Eustachian tube, which is shorter and horizontal in nature making drainage difficult. The blockage creates room for bacteria to grow in the middle ear.


Most children outgrow ear infection as their bodies mature and the structure of the Eustachian tube begins to curve downward vertically. CAUSES OF OTITIS MEDIA WITH EFFUSION (glue ear)
Fluid may build in a child’s middle ear for these reasons:
1. When the children have common cold or upper respiratory infection such as infection of sinus, the middle ear will produce the fluid just like the nose. But the fluid sometimes will not drain out, as would have been the case with nose.
2. Some children do have regular ear infection. Such repeated infections will lead to the child having otitis media with effusion, commonly called glue ear.
3. If the Eustachian tube is not working properly or is blocked by inflammation, the air in the middle ear is absorbed but cannot be

replaced. This causes the air pressure in the middle ear to be less than the air pressure in the ear canal. The negative pressure in the ear causes fluid to be there. Over time, the fluid becomes thicker, like egg white leading to the name glue ear.
4. Children with palate problems such as cleft palates may keep getting glue ear.
5. Allergies to pet, pollen or dust and the child being exposed to cigarette smokes may cause glue ear.

My people, I welcome you all to another delightful season of our health program ‘you and your ear’. An online platform designed to inform you on all you need to know about one of our most important body organ, The Ear and how to avoid hearing loss.
The topic for this episode is Communication Tips. During our last session, we highlighted various signs that will tell you that an older papa or mama is having hearing loss. Today, we will be discussing communication tips for those that have age related hearing loss.

If your doctor have told you that you have age related hearing loss or you know one who does, share these tips with him or her;
• Look at the face of the person talking to you.
• Do have light in front of you when speaking. This allows a person who is hearing impaired to observe facial expression, gestures, lip read and see body movements that provide communication clues.
• Turn off radio or television during conversation to avoid noise interference.
• The person you are conversing with should not chew or cover his face.
• You can ask him to speak slightly louder but not to shout. Shouting may distort speech. The person should speak at normal rate without exaggerating.
• In a more severe situation, it is important you ask for clue to the topic of discussion and let the person you are conversing with use simpler sentences and rephrase when necessary.
• Seat position in social gathering, restaurant etc. is very important. Seat away from noisy area and seat in such a way that you can see the four angles of the room without stress to enable you follow movement of the speaker without stress
• If you are using analogue hearing aid, always adjust it to suite your environment to enhance better hearing.
If your doctor confirms you have age related hearing loss, get hearing aid as stressing to hear will worsen your hearing.

In our last episode, we were made to understand that some people get hearing loss as they get older. From age of 75years and above, almost all of them develop hearing loss.
Today, we will be continuing on the Symptoms that if you notice it on an aged person you know he or she is having age related hearing loss.
• If he turns the television or radio volume loud more often, louder than normal to enable him hear them, he may have developed hearing loss
• He may find it difficult or harder to hear people talk in a noisy place.
• He may be socially withdrawn due to frustrations in understanding people.
• A man’s voice will be easier to hear than that of a woman that is more of high pitches.
• Speech of others seems mumbled or slurred.
• Certain sounds seem over loud and annoying.
• Complains of ringing, roaring or hissing sounds in one or both ears are common signs.





WHAT CAN BE DONE?
Immediately you notice you know longer hear well, see ENT doctor.
The ENT doctor will check you well and confirm that they are no other problems or disorder that is contributing to the hearing loss. He will send you for different tests including hearing test. The doctor will also consider the extent of the hearing loss and your medications etc. He will advice you on the best treatment that will be helpful to you. Today, we will be sharing with you on the aspect of hearing loss as a result of aging, medically called Pressbycusis

Some people as they get older develop hearing loss. Usually it is gradual and involves both ears and within the high frequencies, the person finds it difficult to understand sound that sounds similar.
One out of three aged over 40 years people do have age related hearing loss. Half of people over 75 years have hearing loss do to aging. In most cases, the person may not know he is losing his hearing. They will hear but find it difficult to understand. So when your aged parent start telling you to repeat constantly, know he is having hearing loss

CAUSES:
• As earlier mentioned, this type of hearing loss is age related. It occurs mostly within the inner ear or along nerve pathways to the brain. Cumulative affects of environmental, industrial, social or recreational noises do cause pressbycusis.
• As a person ages, the cochlear heir cells may become damaged and the middle ear will start to undergo physical changes thereby making understanding of speech difficult.

• Poor health of the aged and side effects of some medicines he is taking could also lead to hearing difficulties of the elderly people.

• If you are elderly person, or you have elderly person who keeps bending forward to hear or who keep asking you to repeat what you have said etc, then the person must have developed age related hearing loss medically known as – Pressbycusis.

1. If there is a complete or partial closure blocking of the ear passage due to accident, maldevelopment, diseases etc. It will affect the person’s level of hearing or cause complete lost of hearing

2. Ear wax when it blocks the ear canal completely may cause hearing loss. Hearing bounces back when the wax is removed. Do not use cotton bud to clean your ear. You can injure your ear drum. A healthy ear cleans itself. The more you try to clean it yourself the more you create room for wax to block the ear. More so, you can only reach first bend. Let a specialist clean your ear when it is blocked.
Ear wax lubricates the canal and protects the ear when insect or foreign objects want to enter the ear.

3. Children or adult can mistakenly insert foreign bodies into their ear like grains, cotton bud etc thus disturbing the smooth flow of sound to the inner ear and to the brain. This could also lead to mild hearing loss. When removed, hearing will be restored.

4. The ear drum when perforated by hard objects or infected may lead to hearing loss. You who use all types of objects in cleaning your ear, be warned before you use your hands to cause your self hearing loss

5. Inflammations of the ear canal; injury within or outside passage may cause hearing loss.

Today we will be discussing all about your ear (Physiology of hearing). Probably, you will be hearing the traffic sound or a whisper from a friend, your colleague may be laughing it off or even you are hearing a louder sound like that of a Siren. Sounds are everywhere and you have parts in your body that lets you hear sounds; that is your ear.
Ears play very vital roles in human life. The Pinna collects the sounds from the environment process them and send the sound signal to the brain for interpretation. That is not all, the ears helps you to maintain balance. That you are able to stand, bend, move, are all good works of your ear organ. Ear is made up of three parts. All works together to enable you hear, interact, and socialize.
Outer ear: This starts from the part called Pinna. It is the part of the ear that people can see. Its work is to catch sound, pass it through the ear passage called Canal. Canal is where ear wax is produced. Ear Wax is the brownish stuff that contained chemicals that fights infection. The wax also collects dirts and stops foreign bodies from getting to the middle ear
From Middle Ear, sound will travel through the ear passage till it gets to the eardrum. From Ear drum, the sound will enter Inner Ear. From the Inner Ear, the sound will get to the brain and we will be able to understand what we hear. If anything stops the sound from moving till the brain then we have hearing loss.
