The equation is a quadratic in two variables x and y Factorise the left hand side: x^2 - xy - 6y^2 = 0 (x^2 - 3xy)+ (2xy - 6y^2) = 0 x(x - 3y) +2y(x - 3y) = 0 (x + 2y)(x - 3y) = 0 From (i) x = 3y i.e x/y = 3 and from (ii) x = -2y i.e. x/y = -2 The values of x/y are 3 and -2.

x^2-xy-6y^2=0,multiplying 1st and last term gives me -6(xy)^2.so factors are 2xy and-3xy...substituting these values for -xy, I got x2+2xy-3xy-6y2=0...factorizing gives me (x-3y)(x+2y)=0...going for x-3y=0,x=3y and x/y gives me 3...I hope I am right...
