Phones / How Often Do You Change Your Lock Screen Password? by Ayebaeapretai(f): 10:31am On Aug 19, 2019
With time, the amount of data kept in phones and tablets has increased so much that their protection has become a priority. No device as complex as a smartphone or tablet is ever completely secure, but device manufactures and developers are still doing their best to keep your data safe. The first line of defence is your lockscreen, typically protected by a PIN code or password. It's surely a good practice to have a password, PIN number, or fingerprint check protecting your phone.

Over the years there have been various options for smartphone security, from lock patterns to pictures to facial recognition. The humble four-digit PIN code is one of the most popular choice. Throw in everything from online shopping apps to relationships that you might want to keep quiet about and it soon becomes apparent how important lock screen security really is.

There is some merit to changing your passwords regularly, and keeping your information secure is definitely a priority. It may seem like a simple thing, but changing your password is a fact of life. Changing your password regularly may not be the best course of action, but changing it to something strong and hard to crack or guess is.

At the end, it’s up to you to make your device’s security your personal goal. The chances or your devices being “hacked” or broken or stolen into depends entirely on how careful you are with it, and the complexity of the security you’ve put into place. After all much of our life is contained within a very small item that can easily be lost or stolen.

Phones / 4g, Lte And Volte: What’s The Main Difference? by Ayebaeapretai(f): 9:58am On Aug 05, 2019
Do you remember the last time you didn’t use your phone? I'm aware. It is practically impossible for us to imagine life without data connectivity, as we probably pick our smartphones up, over a hundred times each day for texting, calls and sharing our lives with our friends. For such instances, when we want to stay connected, nothing can be as irritating as bad or slow connectivity. With the onset of 4G technology from providers such as Airtel, that problem has become much less frequent.

With hours of our daily life revolving around the internet, making it one of the most revolutionary shifts of recent years, ever wondered how it actually works, and what all the lingo around it actually means?

Let’s help you out.

4G stands for the 4th generation of cellular network technology and is the latest and fastest type of network available in India. 4G has a bunch of improvements over 3G, which specifically include upgrades around speed and connectivity for the consumer, something Airtel 4G users can vouch for. To be qualified as 4G, a system must fulfil the requirements set by the International Telecommunication Union’s global standard called International Mobile Communications-Advanced. Satisfaction of these criteria makes them eligible to mark their network as 4G. These include:

*All-IP packet switched network
*Data rates up to 100 Mbps for high mobility and up to 1 Gbps for low mobility
*Seamless connectivity and global roaming
*Interoperability with existing wireless standards
*Smooth handovers
*High QoS

However, it needs to be noted that any speed mentioned as requirements are theoretical max speeds, which realistically will be much lower. Another key component is the non-backward compatible nature of the transmission technology. With each generation, there has been a monumental jump in the kind and quantity of data it can process and transfer. Back in the day, 1G was strictly an analogue system, which moved to digital transmission with 2G. 3G added multi-media support and with 4G, we got a much more robust network in terms of speed and stability, while making the move to packet-switched networks.

Moving on, we get 4G LTE, which is often used interchangeably with 4G but is, in fact, a type of 4G which generally implies faster wireless broadband connections. 4G has a strict definition that set by the ITU-R, which telcos found difficult to achieve. LTE is one of the paths followed to achieve 4G speeds and exhibits a significant step up from 3G speeds. Similarly, LTE-Advanced is an incremental upgrade over LTE getting you closer to the actual specified 4G speeds with increased stability.

This also involves the use of MIMO which is a radio transmission. Standing for multiple-input and multiple-output, MIMO uses multiple antennas for transmission and receiving to enable multipath propagation. Not only smartphones, but even wifi routers are now adopting MIMO for better coverage. Airtel was the first network in India to deploy Massive MIMO, making for better customer experience.

It’s not just data speeds that are benefitted with LTE, as even calls can be made over an LTE network, usually termed as VoLTE (Voice over LTE). Since LTE can carry a lot more data than older 3G networks, you can expect superior call qualities, better coverage in indoor areas.

Till a few years ago, you would need to check if your phone supports 4G connectivity, i.e. if it has the necessary hardware like a modem to be able to communicate over 4G frequencies. But now most phones come with the hardware included, even those with dual-SIM cards.

Phones / Personalising Your Phone With Themes, Launchers And Widgets by Ayebaeapretai(f): 11:27am On Jul 31, 2019
Even if you don't know what icon packs or launchers are, if your phone has a home screen on it, it's got a theme. Android users don't have to live in their app drawers; they can choose how their phone looks and functions. They can use widgets to interact with apps without opening them. They can use custom icons to theme or obscure the apps on their phone from prying eyes. They can even use gestures and contextual data to help their phone adapt to where they are and what they're doing.
So, what are Android themes and how can you get started with one?

What's in a theme?

There are many types of themes within Android, but the kinds we're going to refer to throughout this article are home screen themes or launcher themes. A theme is the visual styling of your home screen, achieved through the choice and use of launchers, wallpapers, widgets, icon packs, sounds, and other elements.
When many users think of themes, they imagine complex elements and high-maintenance setups. For most of us, though, a theme does not mean changing the way your phone is set up, only how that setup looks.

Even if you're not interested in making your home screen look pretty, there are some other uses for launcher themes and customization that you may be interested in:

• Hiding apps: Most launchers have the option of hiding an app from the app drawer, but for apps that you want easily accessible but away from prying eyes, many launchers also allow you to rename apps and give them icons less likely to draw the eye. Or make them invisible altogether.

• Transferring themes and setups: Your mother just got a new phone, but she wants everything where it was on her old one. Well, with theme backups, you can make all her Android devices look like her old one.

• Efficiency: The less time you spend fumbling around your app drawer looking for the app you need, the quicker you can get back to doing something with your life besides staring at your phone. Some launchers will re-order your apps based on how frequently you use them, and through the use of your launcher's folders, you can cut down on the clutter, both in your app drawer and on your home screen.

• Choice: Don't like the way your app drawer is alphabetized? Don't like only having a 5x5 grid on your home screen and not being able to resize your widgets? A third-party launcher can let you choose just about everything about your launcher experience.

Launchers and how to use them

All phones come with a launcher, which is the interface through which users interact with their phone's apps and customize their home screens.Infinix devices come with our in-house developed XOS launcher.
If you're ready to jump into the wonderful world of third-party launchers, there's a lot out there to choose from.

Wallpapers: the most basic and pivotal personalization

No matter what launcher you use, you need something to put up behind your widgets and apps. Wallpapers come from all corners of the internet and beyond. If you're not using a picture of your kids or your dog or that lovely little cabin up in Denver that you're going to own as soon as you win the lottery, you may want to consider replacing the wallpaper that came on your phone with pictures from time to time:

Widgets: the forgotten home screen element

Widgets are miniature apps that run on your home screen. There are several types of widgets, from toggle widgets to control your Hue Lights to forecast widgets for your local weather to playback widgets to control your music. Most of your apps probably came with some sort of widget, and there are third party widgets you can download if you don't like those.
Widgets can serve as shortcuts into apps, or better yet into specific functions of an app. The Google Keep widget lets me access my most recent notes or start a new one without keeping the icon in my dock. The Netflix widget can take me to the next episode of my current shows. My weather widget can take me to current conditions or one of my forecasts, depending on what I click.

Once you get used to your new launcher and some new widgets, we'll be ready to dive into gesture controls, Custom widgets, Tasker shortcuts, and much, much more... the world of Android customization is out there, just waiting to be explored. But for now, show us your screen and what you're using on it! Have a launcher you'll use forever? Which widget never leaves your home screen? Swear by your icon pack? {:16_3:} Share them in the comments!
