Politics / ECO Currency: Nigeria ‘ll Respond Soon – Finance Minister by Ayehmichael(m): 5:42pm On Dec 30, 2019
Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Mrs Zainab Ahmed on Monday said that Nigeria was in receipt of the news regarding the change of name of the UEMOA Currency, the CFA (Communaute Financiere d’Afrique) to Eco, supposedly as the single currency of Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

Ahmed who spoke through her Special Adviser, Media and Communication, Yunusa Tanko Abdullahi said Nigeria was “studying the situation and would respond in due course”.

Presidents of the 15-nation ECOWAS agreed at a summit in Abuja in June to adopt ECO as the name of the planned shared currency for the bloc which will take off in 2020.

But Nigeria’s Minister of Finance, Mrs Zainab Ahmed, had on December 6 in Abuja expressed skepticism over the possibility of the single currency regime taking off next year as planned by ECOWAS member nations.

According to her, only the Republic of Togo out of other ECOWAS nations has met the set criteria for achieving the target.

Foreign Affairs / Algerians Protest Against New President by Ayehmichael(m): 10:05pm On Dec 27, 2019
Tens of thousands of Algerians demonstrated Friday for the second consecutive week since the contentious election of a new president, insisting on a total revamp of the political establishment.

Since February 22, the streets of the capital Algiers have been filled with protesters every Friday, first calling for the ouster of president Abdelaziz Bouteflika then pushing for a complete overhaul of the political system in place since Algeria’s 1962 independence from France.

Turnout at the marches has seen peaks and troughs over the months, but they swelled in recent weeks ahead of a presidential election to replace Bouteflika, which protesters saw as a ploy to ensure establishment insiders stayed in power.

On Friday, the demonstration seemed one of the smallest since the start of the unprecedented, peaceful uprising, with some protesters saying school and university holidays had kept people away.

Crime / Boko Haram Releases New Video, Kills Soldiers, Policeman by Ayehmichael(m): 5:04pm On Dec 10, 2019
Boko Haram has released a video showing the execution of two soldiers and a policeman, posted online late Monday by the Islamic State group propaganda agency, Amaq.

The video, dated Sunday, was made by a branch of Boko Haram that has sworn allegiance to IS known as the Islamic State Group in West Africa.

Its release came days after the terrorists announced the kidnapping of 14 people including two aid workers and, according to them, six members of the security forces.

It shows three men in plain clothes kneeling in a field, introducing themselves as members of the Nigerian security forces before masked men in fatigues open fire on them shouting “Allahu Akbar” (God is greatest).

“We tell the Nigerian army that we will never spare those fighting against the people who follow Allah’s religion,” one of the executioners said in Hausa, a language widely spoken in the north of the country.
