Politics / Arakunrin Akeredolu Set The Pace As The Masses Oriented Governor by ayfay047(f): 8:30pm On Oct 03, 2019
Amudipe Opeyemi Marcus

Food, Water, Clothing and Shelter are considered the basic human needs. It is the ultimate goal of any governance to ensure that its citizens have access to these basic needs of life. It will be considered a big crime against humanity and against all the virtues of good governance if any leader within his given capacity fails to ensure the provision of these basic needs.

As little and insignificant as they might seem, they are an integral element necessary in the survival tussle of every individual. We might ask ourselves, if any administration fails to provide something as little as these, what is the hope of the masses when it comes to bigger things? For such administration is nothing but an outright failure.

The days are gone were people celebrate bulls in a china shop projects, touching lives positively especially in the grassroots requires no white elephant project, all that is required are heartfelt and sustainable projects tailored after the wellness and welfarism of the people.

This is the way men of old has etched themselves in the walls of history, for their testament were never written on walls, but on the heart of the people. There testaments forever spoken of, passed from one generation to another.

Standing tall among men who has chosen to walk the walk and talk the talk, doing that which is right and befitting for his people is Arakunrin Akeredolu, the man whose unfailing vision and brilliance has led Ondo State from the path of obscurity into a realm where living has been made easy for all and sundry.

Quite ingenious to see Arakunrin Akeredolu roll out the Kamomi Aketi water scheme, which has saw to the rehabilitation of over 750 boreholes in about 300 communities in the state.

Lack of portable water has been a huge problem in the state, as many communities find it an herculean task getting access to good and drinkable water supply.

Previous administration has tried to find a lasting solution to this ugly situation, an example is the failed Owena Dam Project which initiated by the Agagu led administration.

The Kamomi Aketi Water scheme has proven to be a lasting solution to the issue of water scarcity in rural areas in Ondo State.
The success of the Kamomi Aketi water scheme did have a wonderful ripples effect, as the Federal Government has adopted the model for all states across the federation.

To this end, the Federal Ministry of Water Resources through its PEWASH programme in conjunction with the Ondo State government organized a day training programme for participants across the six geo-political zones of the country in Akure, the state capital to understudy the Ondo system.

This move by the federal government is a positive acknowledgement of the tremendous efforts of Arakunrin Akeredolu to ensure that the lives and welfare of the people of Ondo State receives a massive facelift. When there is an evidence of good governance, backed up by good success story from the people who are the direct beneficiaries, it becomes a template for others to follow.

In Ondo State, Arakunirn Akeredolu has proven to the whole world, through his masses oriented projects that he is a worthy example to be followed across all the states in the federation.

Technology Market / In Nigeria, A New Flying Labs Takes Flight by ayfay047(f): 5:48am On Oct 02, 2019
In Nigeria, a group of local experts has launched Nigeria Flying Labs South West Hub to meet and foster the demand for digital entrepreneurship. The newly formed Flying Labs team is applying their expertise in drones, drone data, and geographic information systems (GIS) to empower local businesses and smallholder farmers. Already, the team has trained 100 youth in Ondo State in smart farming techniques and drone technology. In the months to come, it will organize additional training sessions and reach even more people, each of whom in turn has the power to generate exponential impact. Nigeria Flying Labs South West Hub is proud to build on the expertise of the global network of “Flying Labs” partners all around the world. It is equally pleased to use its unique knowledge to help Nigeria’s most innovative future entrepreneurs take flight.

So, what is Nigeria Flying Labs South West Hub? A regional hub of expertise and innovation, it works collaboratively with local communities to build skills and to give individuals the tools they need to succeed. It was formed as an alliance between Orbital Solutions Global Services Limited, which focuses on GIS, YUAVI Technologies Limited, a company specializing in aerial imaging, and the Ondo State Office of Innovation and Partnerships. This partnership is built upon a shared commitment to the best operational practices and the highest data standards. Within the scope of the alliance, YUAVI Technologies provides additional drone services and public sector partnerships while ION offers enterprise and human capital development to drive sustainability of drone service commercialization. The goals of the partnership with YUAVI Technologies Limited and ION include building local skills of digital entrepreneurs, catalysing businesses and creating demand for the skills of digital entrepreneurs. Nigeria Flying Labs South West Hub is led by Managing Director Adewale Adegoke, an expert in how geospatial technologies and data can catalyze economic opportunities for both the public and private sectors.

And what exactly does Nigeria Flying Labs South West Hub do? They empower local communities to excel in a rapidly changing modern era. Take those 100 youth who attended the team’s first training. By its conclusion, they were equipped to use drones to improve agriculture and, very soon, the Labs will build on this success to train an additional 50 youth in the same techniques, mentoring them to become digital entrepreneurs and to incorporate drones into e-extension services.

Once these skills are employed outside the classroom, Nigeria Flying Labs South West Hub scales humanitarian impact. They build partnerships between the public and private sectors, uniting key actors for a common goal. Together, the Labs and their partners incubate innovative ideas on how to interpret drone data for social good. F surveying and mapping local land to improve agriculture to human capital development, the Labs achieves quantifiable outcomes for its beneficiaries.

Nigeria Flying Labs South West Hub is dedicated to catalyzing new business and empowering local businesses. How? By mentoring digital entrepreneurs to partner with public sector agencies and generating demand for their skills in a sustainable business environment. To do so, the Labs uses its “droners’ platform” to establish market linkages between drone pilots and potential clients.

Nigeria Flying Labs South West Hub is the latest in a string of such labs generating impact across the globe by harnessing technology for social good. However, while it builds on the success of its predecessors around the world, the team and the community that surrounds Nigeria Flying Labs South West Hub has proved itself unique. Already, there has been tremendous excitement among local entrepreneurs to learn the skills to build their businesses and benefit their communities. Over the coming months, be sure to track their progress—and watch Nigeria Flying Labs South West Hub soar.

Politics / Ondo Introduces Automated System For Retirement Benefits Processing by ayfay047(f): 12:43pm On Sep 26, 2019
As part of the reform agenda of the Ondo State Head of Service, Mr Dare Aragbaiye to reposition the State Civil Service for excellent service delivery and make bureaucratic processes less cumbersome, the state government would soon commence automated system of processing documents of Pensioners for their retirement benefits.

To this effect, the State Information Technology Agency has developed a computerized system that would electronically capture Pensioners and process their documents on line for easy and quick reception of their benefits.

Presenting the design to the Pension Reform Committee at the office of the Head of Service in Akure, the Director of Software in the State Information Technology Agency, Mrs Bola Oyebode said the process would allow for interface with each of the retirees at the point of exit from service for capturing and collation of their data.

Mrs Oyebode noted that instead of the usual manual process of obtaining various documents from different Ministries, Agencies and Departments of government for approval, the documents would be automated and uploaded to a preferred server for assessment by relevant government officials, adding that the process would lessen the burden of Pensioners and reduce movement of documents from one place to another.

In his remarks, the Head of Service commended the Agency for the innovation which he said would enhance easy access to Pensioners records, eradicate fraud in the pension office and put an end to the activities of the syndicate that exploits Pensioners by collecting certain percentage of money to process their retirement benefits.

He added that with the system, Pensioners’ data could easily be collated, arranged, processed and retrieved while falsification of documents would be difficult to perpetrate.

The Administrative Secretary of the State Public Service Reform Office, Mr Oluwagbenga Akingbesote said the Committee has reduced the documents to be submitted by retirees for the process of their retirement benefits from about 30 to 16.

Mr Akingbesote opined that with the reduction in number of documents to be processed and introduction of automated processing system, the time and resources to be spent by Pensioners would be drastically reduced.

The Permanent Secretary of the Pension Transition Department, Mr Tope Kolawole and his counterpart in the Local Government Pension Transition Department, Dr. Bunmi Eniaiyewu, who was represented by the Director of Local Government Pension, Mr Gbenga Tolulope presented report to the Committee.

Other members of the Committee include among others Permanent Secretaries of Hospital Management Board, Dr Adeniran Ikuemola, Civil Service Commission, Mrs Folasade Adegoke, Teaching Service Commission, Mrs Funmilayo Ajayi, Department of Service Matters, Mr Bayo Philip and the State Auditor General, Mr Sunday Adegoke.

Adefarati said that this had led to the expansion of farm settlements, improvement in farmers’ yields and repositioning of Ondo as the number one cocoa producing state in Nigeria.

“The present administration commenced free distribution of improved cocoa seedlings across the state in 2018, with over 400,000 seedlings and it has distributed over 250,000 cocoa seedlings and thousands of oil palm, coconut and kolanut seedlings this year”.

Education / ODSG Still Operate Free Education – Commissioner Tells Principals by ayfay047(f): 2:03pm On Sep 25, 2019
The Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology Mr Femi Agagu has said that the free education policy which the South western part of Nigeria was noted for is still intact in Ondo State.

Agagu stated this in a Statutory meeting with All Nigeria Conference of Principals of Secondary School (ANCOPSS) Ondo State chapter held in Akure on Monday.

The Commissioner who said the list of approved collectables is available for both School Principals and Parents for compliance frowned at incessant reports of School Principals charging illegal fees from parents and their wards before allowing them in Schools.

He said this act has become embarrassment to the state, noting that government would be left with no option than to apply appropriate sanctions for those found culpable to serve as deterrent to others.

Speaking on inadequate teachers in some public school, the Commissioner said the office of the Ondo State Head of Service has began a process of scouting out for those with teaching qualifications in the Civil Service for further redeployment to the Teaching Service as school Teachers.

While reacting to cases of Indiscipline and Cultism among Students, Agagu urged the School Principals to avoid indiscriminate admission of Students into their schools and be proactive by engaging the Students at all times with both Curricular and extra curricular activities to avoid idleness

Also addressing the principals, the Permanent Secretary Ministry of Education, Science and Technology Mr Akin Asaniyan said those who had collected above the collectables would be made to refund whatever is collected in excess to the students or their parents.

Asaniyan said instead of school principals extorting the Students, they should rather make the schools as Internally Generated Revenue sources for government through what they collect from the use of premises for ceremonies and part-time programmes and pay part of whatever realized to government purse since the schools belong to government and are being maintain by government. .

Speaking on the quality delivery services and competency of some teachers in public schools, the Director Inspectorate and quality assurance .Mr Olusola Akanle said “The Teacher Registration Council of Nigeria ” (TRCN) had intimated the government with plan to as from year 2020 prosecute Teachers without teaching qualifications.

In an interview, the ANCOPSS president Ondo State chapter Mr Johnbull Mebawondu said although he had held a meeting with all the principals where it was agreed that none of them will collect extra charges aside the one approved by state government, it was necessary that they heard from the Hon. commissioner.

Similarly, the Principal of Fiwasaye Girls Grammar School, Akure, Mrs Taye Bòlá said the meeting was apt, according to her a lot of issues bothering on School Services and administration in the new session were discussed and resolved.

At the end of the meeting a 3man communique drafting committee read the resolutions which were arrived at and same shall be forwarded to government for action. with aim of moving education forward in the state

The meeting, although statutory, was one of the series of meetings called to caution the excesses and also fashion out modalities that will put an end to Social Vices in the education sector.

Politics / Screening Of Ondo LG Workers, Teachers, Pensioners Not For Retrenchment- NULGE by ayfay047(f): 12:14pm On Sep 19, 2019
The Nigeria Union local government Employees (NULGE), Wednesday cautioned politicians and aspirants for 2020 Ondo state governorship election to desist from playing politics with the recent screening of the local government workers, pensioners and primary school teachers in the state.

The Union added that the screening exercise was in the best interest of the workers and pensioners, assuring that governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu-led administration would not use the exercise to retrench any worker.

The Ondo state President of NULGE, Comrade Bola Taiwo disclosed this in Akure while speaking with newsmen on the recent outburst by some governorship aspirants who criticised the screening exercise.

Comrade Bola who will be sworn-in for another term on Thursday September 26, having been elected unopposed two months ago, noted that the screening was organised to know when the workers joined service and when they would retire, so that government would plan for them.

On the logjam over the implementation of the 30,000 minimum wage, the NULGE President expressed reservation over the failure of both government and the organised labour to agree on a new salary table before signing into law of the new wage.

The NULGE President said, “politicians should not use workers’ welfare to play politics against Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu; the screening for primary school teachers, local government workers and their pensioners is not to witch hunt anybody. The screening exercise was organised to know the numerical strength of local government workers and primary school teachers to enable government plans for the workers.”

“There is no indication that government wants to use the screening exercise to downside or retrench workers, there is nothing like that and if you monitored the screening (two weeks ago), it has a human face.”

“The government never asked for certificate or primary six certificate, it is just your physical appearance and your letters of appointment and letter of last promotion, just to know when you joined service and when you will retire, and how to plan for them, nothing like retrenchment plan.”

“Unlike previous or past screenings under the last administration in the state when a lot of people lost their lives, travelling around to get primary six certificate, this current screening under this administration is not like that.”

He said, “during the screening we have discovered a lot of revelations, where workers traveled out of the country (without official approval) and still collecting salaries, by the time the screening report is out, we will see the revelations.”

“We have had reactions from politicians about the screening, we want to advise politicians in the state that if they want to fight for positions in the state, they should not use workers’ welfare to settle scores.

He noted that, “either primary school teachers or local government workers or even pensioners should not be used to play politics. We don’t want workers to be used to negotiate for appointment.”

“I first got to the office through a bye-election to complete the tenure of Dr Bunmi Eniayewu as NULGE President when he was appointed the permanent secretary few months ago. However, I want elected unopposed and our inauguration will hold on September 26.”

“At the initial stage, there is a mistake, I don’t expect our labour leaders to agree on a new minimum wage without a table, in the past years, there will be a (salary) table before going on negotiations, it is the table that should be used to reach figure, that is why we find ourselves at this stage.”

Comrade Bola said, “we want to advise that the allocation formula of sharing money from the federation account should be reviewed to enable state governments and local governments get more allocations to implement the new minimum wage.”

Politics / Why We Are Securing N50bn Loan Bond — Ondo Govt by ayfay047(f): 9:23am On Sep 09, 2019
The Ondo State government on Sunday explained that the N50b loan bond approved by the State House of Assembly last week is to be used for developmental projects initiated by the administration of Governor Rotimi Akeredolu.

The State Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Mr Donald Ojogo, who disclosed this while speaking with newsmen dismissed the claim that the loan was secured to fund the re-election bid of Akeredolu.

Ojogo, who emphasised the need to develop infrastructural facilities in the state said the bond loan became necessary in order to pay contractors handling various capital projects in the state, especially contractors handling road projects.

He assured that the money from the capital market would not come to the purse of the state government but it would be spent directly on government’s projects.

Ojogo, explained that Akeredolu would rather spend such huge bond on legacy projects that would impact positively on the lives of the citizenry instead of using same for any re-election bid.

He said, “The bond as we all know is a N50 billion bond that was approved by the House of Assembly on Thursday. That bond is meant to enhance not just to sustain the development that has been achieved but to further engender and sustain development in the state.

“From that bond N50 billion, 50 kobo or 50 cents of that money is not coming into government purse. It is between the capital market and the banks where the fund will be domicile.

“The governor didn’t take loan or bond to win his election in 2016, the people freely gave him their mandate, so he can’t take loan to do any re-election.

“Disregard opposition, opposition will always talk, it is part of their job to talk. We all know that the money would not be paid into government’s purse but it will be used to fund all these ongoing and new capital projects directly.”

Ojogo assured the people of the state that contractors would soon return to sites of road projects that are currently experiencing a delay, adding that with the approval of the bond, ongoing projects would be completed in record time.

He said the current administration in the state had been able to pay backlog of salary when it came on board and said, “I don’t need to go back to memory lane. One of the revered policies of the governor has been and it remains the fact that he will not dwell on the past. And that is the policy we have promised to uphold.

Politics / South-West To Engage Vigilantes To Fight Insecurity —Akeredolu by ayfay047(f): 4:36am On Sep 03, 2019
The chairman of the South-West Governors Forum and Governor of Ondo State, Mr. Rotimi Akeredolu, on Monday, disclosed that all the Southwest governors have agreed to engage the services of local vigilante groups to tackle insecurity in the zone.

Akeredolu represented by his deputy, Agboola Ajayi at the South-West geopolitical zone security summit convened by the Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, said that the use of vigilantes was a fallout of the recent security summit held in Ibadan, Oyo state.

According to Akeredolu, “Ondo State with other five states of the South-West, the Development Agenda for Western Nigeria also known as the DAWN commission are trying to engage our local vigilantes and collaborate with security agencies.

“This cannot be achieved without involving our traditional rulers who are the custodians of our culture; who know everybody in their communities. We are doing all of this so that we can sleep and close our two eyes.

“With the little resources at our disposal, the Ondo State government will continue to do its best. Not only that, we have done the security summit which was organized by the State government where all the critical stakeholders were involved.

“Very soon, we will launch the Security Trust Fund that will take care of the security arrangement of the state.

“We are also providing jobs for the youths. That is a social security package. If they are engaged, they (can) be self-reliant. I am very sure nobody will think of engaging in something that will damage his own image, his family and reputation. So, the social security package is very important.

“We have a lot of packaged programs that are merely for the youths. About two thousand youths from the riverine are going to benefit from it. It’s not about paying monthly stipends like amnesty, we will train them in the vocation of their choice. Some want to be mechanics, hairdressers among others.

“Apart from that, we have youths on the ridges. We are encouraging our youths to go into mechanized farming where they don’t need to go and look for a white-collar job. We have already secured N2 billion loan from the CBN which will be available for anybody who is willing. We are doing all these to see that our environment is conducive and everybody is engaged,” Akeredolu added.

The host Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State, also unveiled the security agenda of his administration, at the event, which had in attendance, the Inspector General of the Police, Mohammed Adamu; Governor Gboyega Oyetola of Osun State and representatives of other South-West governors.

Makinde in his welcome address said the recent deterioration in the state of security in the South-West, and the country at large prompted the security summit of June 25th in Ibadan, which was coordinated by DAWN.

He said, “It was a consensus that measures be put in place to address insecurity in the geopolitical zone.

“In furtherance of this noble and lofty ideal, a holistic framework for security of the South-West is being put up by the DAWN Commission.

“In Oyo State, in the next few days, we shall unveil a security roadmap, focused on improving security infrastructure

“Awakening the security consciousness of our people and encouraging robust partnership of non-state actors, such as the traditional institutions, volunteers, and other well-meaning residents of the State.

“Application of technology in fighting crimes and criminalities; collaboration with development partners, especially in the areas of capacity building for our security personnel and others.

“Promotion of effective synergy amongst security agencies deployed to the State and ensuring effective oversight of the security agencies to curb excesses, especially in the areas of corruption and trampling on the fundamental rights of our people.

“Ensuring the judicious use of assets of the State assigned to the security agencies, and also ensuring the sustenance of the afore-mentioned measures, as well as periodic review of the measures to meet the dynamic nature of the society.”

Makinde, who stressed the obligations under the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria added that “The security and welfare of the people shall be the primary purpose of government.

“We will do whatever is necessary to protect the lives and properties of our people in Oyo State within the ambits of the law.”
