John's Vision of the Glorified Christ (Revelation 1:12 - 20)

The essence of doing well spiritually is to know, love, and walk in daily intimacy with God, being transformed to reflect Christ in your thoughts, character, and actions.
A poverty mentality is a set of limiting beliefs focused on scarcity, fear, and lack, which influences a person to make short-term or survival-based choices regardless of their actual financial situation. It is a scarcity mindset, a disabling frame of mind rooted in fear, limitation, and the belief that there will never be enough, distinct from simply being broke, which is a temporary economic condition.
People can be physically poor and still carry a poverty mindset, and people can be materially wealthy and still carry a poverty mindset. When a person has lived in lack for a long time, the fear and habits of scarcity can remain in the heart even after resources increase.
Financial abundance does not automatically remove mental poverty. A poverty mentality is a way of thinking that sees life through fear, hoarding, and distrust instead of through faith, generosity, and stewardship.

Test for Poverty Mentality
The goal of this test is not to condemn you, but to help you identify areas where your thinking can be renewed so that your mind agrees with the provision and wisdom of God.
1. Are you always afraid of lack?
The first sign of a poverty mentality is a constant fear that what you have will run out and that nothing will replace it. If the thought of school fees in a few months, house rent that is due, or rising inflation immediately puts you into panic, then your mind is operating from scarcity instead of trust. Fear of tomorrow makes you live as though God who has cared for you until today will suddenly abandon you. A mind set on lack will always project disaster, even when there is present evidence of God’s faithfulness.
Remember that you came into this world with nothing, and yet God has sustained you up to this day. Look at what you have now, look at the doors He has opened, look at the times He made a way when you saw no way. That same God who has kept you is able to keep you tomorrow. Psalm 37 verse 25 says, I have been young and now am old, yet I have not seen the righteous forsaken or his children begging for bread. Hebrews 13 verse 5 also records the promise of God, I will never leave you nor forsake you. The righteous is the one who believes and puts his trust in God, and such a person can rest instead of panic.
To break this fear, practice gratitude for today and faith for tomorrow. Thank God for what He has already done, and then present your needs to Him with confidence. Philippians 4 verse 6 says, do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. When fear rises, replace it with remembrance of God’s past faithfulness and with His promises for the future.
2. Do you clean the plate always?
Another sign is the compulsion to extract every last bit from anything you own. Squeezing a finished toothpaste tube, cutting open a container to get the last cream, and refusing to leave anything behind are habits that reveal a heart that believes there will never be more. It also shows up in how you treat people. Do you refuse to give tips to gatemen, cleaners, gardeners, attendants, and messengers. Do you bargain with poor sellers until they make no profit. At a function, do you overeat and pack food home while others at the same event go without. If the answer is yes, then your mind is still wired in scarcity.
God instructed Israel to leave something behind during harvest so that the poor, the orphan, and the stranger could also benefit. Leviticus 23 verse 22 says, when you reap the harvest of your land, you shall not reap your field right up to its edge, nor shall you gather the gleanings after your harvest. You shall leave them for the poor and for the sojourner. Ruth 2 verse 15 to 16 shows how Boaz told his workers to deliberately leave grain for Ruth. God’s economy makes room for others to be blessed through you.
Generosity is the antidote to this mindset. Learn to leave margin. Learn to let people profit and gain from you. Proverbs 11 verse 24 says, one gives freely, yet grows all the richer, another withholds what he should give, and only suffers want. When you give, give with honour. God is not calling us to give leftovers that reflect a refurbished life, but to give with a cheerful and willing heart. 2 Corinthians 9 verse 7 says, God loves a cheerful giver.
3. Do you plan and provide for others?
A poverty mindset is self-centered. If all your planning is only about yourself, and you keep everything including things you do not need, then fear is driving you. Keeping excess items in the house because you might need them in the future, while others around you have a present need, shows a lack of trust in God’s supply and a lack of love for your neighbour. Hoarding is not wisdom, it is bondage.
God’s design is that we would think beyond ourselves and provide for others. 1 Timothy 6 verses 17 to 19 instructs those who are rich in this present age not to be haughty, nor to set their hopes on the uncertainty of riches, but on God who richly provides us with everything to enjoy. They are to do good, to be rich in good works, to be generous and ready to share, thus storing up treasure for themselves as a good foundation for the future. This is how prosperity is sustained, by becoming a channel.
Ask God to show you what you have in excess and who needs it. Acts 20 verse 35 records the words of Jesus that it is more blessed to give than to receive. When you release what you are holding, you create room for God to fill you again. A generous life is a prosperous life, because it reflects the heart of the Father who gave His Son for us.
4. Are you always complaining about prices?
Complaining is a loud expression of a poverty mindset. When prices rise, when the economy is hard, when something costs more than you expected, the first response of a poverty mentality is to murmur. Yet Scripture is clear that complaining is not the will of God. 1 Corinthians 10 verse 10 warns, nor grumble, as some of them did and were destroyed by the Destroyer. Complaining dishonours God and weakens faith, because it focuses on the problem instead of on the Provider.
The wilderness generation is a sober example. Millions of Israelites died in the wilderness because of constant complaining. Even though some of their complaints sounded reasonable, God was looking for trust. Only Caleb and Joshua entered the Promised Land because they had a different spirit. Numbers 14 verse 24 says, but my servant Caleb, because he has a different spirit and has followed me fully, I will bring into the land into which he went.
The alternative to complaining is thanksgiving and prayer. Philippians 4 verses 6 to 7 says, do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Train yourself to bring every concern to God first, and to thank Him even while you are waiting.
5. Are you always trying to get things for less?
This shows up as a compulsion to always pay the lowest possible price, especially when dealing with people who are also struggling. It also shows up as a preference for second hand, fairly used, or fake items even when the difference in price between the inferior and the original is small. The motive is not wisdom, it is fear. The thinking is, if I do not grab the cheapest, I will lose. That thinking keeps you in a cycle of low quality and constant replacement, which in the end costs more.
God does not give us an inferior life. John 10 verse 10 says, I came that they may have life and have it abundantly. God wants us to walk in wisdom, but wisdom is not the same as cheapness. Sometimes paying for quality is actually good stewardship, because it lasts longer and serves better.
Break this by renewing your belief that God can provide the best for you. Stop running away from good things out of fear. Ask God for wisdom to know when to wait, when to save, and when to invest in quality. Deuteronomy 8 verse 18 says, you shall remember the Lord your God, for it is he who gives you power to get wealth. Trust Him for provision, and do not despise the process of building wealth with integrity.
6. When you find lost items do you feel like keeping it?
The way you respond to what does not belong to you reveals the condition of your heart. If your first instinct when you find a lost item is to keep it, that is a poverty mindset. It says, I must take advantage because I do not trust that God will provide for me legitimately. This is not about the value of the item, it is about integrity.
The law of God addressed this directly. Deuteronomy 22 verses 1 to 3 says, you shall not see your brother's ox or his sheep going astray and ignore them. You shall take them back to your brother. And if he is not near you, or if you do not know who he is, you shall bring it home to your house, and it shall stay with you until your brother seeks it, then you shall restore it to him. God calls His people to honesty even in small matters, because character is formed in hidden places.
Luke 16 verse 10 says, one who is faithful in a very little is also faithful in much, and one who is dishonest in a very little is also dishonest in much. Ask God to give you a heart that returns what is not yours, and that trusts Him to supply what you need without compromise. Integrity protects your future and invites the blessing of God.
7. Are you always involved in quick money schemes?
A poverty mindset is impatient and desperate. It is always looking for a shortcut. Gambling, betting, pyramid schemes, money doubling, and investments that promise one hundred percent returns overnight are all signs of this impatience. The thinking is, I do not have time to build, I need it now. But God’s way is the way of diligence and steady growth. Proverbs 21 verse 5 says, the plans of the diligent lead surely to abundance, but everyone who is hasty comes only to poverty.
Proverbs 13 verse 11 also says, wealth gained hastily will dwindle, but whoever gathers little by little will increase it. God is not against wealth, He is against the shortcuts that destroy character and peace. Wealth built slowly with wisdom lasts, because it is built on a foundation.
Choose the path of work, skill, and faithfulness. Colossians 3 verse 23 says, whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men. Trust God for increase, and reject any scheme that requires deception, pressure, or greed. The blessing of the Lord makes rich, and He adds no sorrow to it, Proverbs 10 verse 22.
8. How far can you go to have money?
The final test is your limit. If there is no boundary to what you will do for money, whether fraud, money rituals, kidnapping, prostitution, or betrayal, then you are operating from deep poverty in your mind. It means you do not believe that God can prosper you, so you are willing to sacrifice your soul for gain.
Some people even abandon the house of God on Sunday morning to chase money, and that is a sign that money has become their god. Matthew 16 verse 26 asks, for what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul. Or what shall a man give in return for his soul. The love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, 1 Timothy 6 verse 10. Even some who started well in ministry have been derailed because they could not wait on God and chose money over obedience.
God’s promise is that when you are faithful in little, He will lift you at the right time. Psalm 37 verse 4 says, delight yourself in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart.
