FORMER Lagos governor, Mr. Bola Ahmed Tinubu may have left the United States, hurriedly, at the weekend in order to avoid being questioned by the American authorities for allegedly trumping a false “gold card invitation” to attend the Democratic National Committee’s convention in Charlotte, North Carolina, last week. Tinubu, a two-term governor of Lagos who was also a senator of the failed third republic, allegedly bolted out of the United States and arrived Nigeria on Saturday in order to avoid being questioned, said our sources, for the claims made by an aide who said that Mr. Tinubu was invited in his capacity as the official leader of “opposition in Nigeria,” a claim that has since been rejected by a DNC source. Tinubu and the said aide, Mr. Sunday Dare, have been challenged by members of the Nigerian immigrant community, both on social media outlets on Facebook where the topic has taken a life of its own, and at the convention ground, to provide invites signed by President Barack Obama to attend the event. A response has yet to be issued by Mr. Tinubu to the serious allegations. Instead, obvious attempts are being orchestrated to discredit sharpedgenews.com as the source of the original report published on Saturday, with claims that the report is being sponsored by Dr. Doyin Okupe, the recently appointed special assistant on publicity to President Jonathan. Mr. Oladimeji Abitogun, the editor-in-chief of sharpedgenews.com, has strongly dispelled such notion as “ruthless, baseless and ill-conceived,” adding that “no one at sharpedgenews.com has any such contacts” with Mr. Okupe. “While it is not impossible that certain outlets may have been employed to reproduce our initial report on this matter, we are not aware any such request and it would be foolhardy, if not irresponsible, of anyone to attempt to smear us with the charge that Aso Rock dictates story ideas or editorial contents to us,” Mr. Abitogun said. The conduct of some of Tinubu’s aides originally triggered the irritation of the Nigerian community at the Charlotte convention. The trip was sold to the Nigerian public under the impression that the“gold card invitation” came from President Obama. It was later obvious that key members of the DNC and President Obama did not enjoy any kind of personal relationship with Mr. Tinubu – contrary to the impression given Nigerians. The Tinubu delegation also did not enjoy the kind of VIP treatment given to the members of the diplomatic community present at the event. Sharpedgenews.com had reported in the initial edition of this story that anyone who paid over five thousand dollars received the generic invitation to attend the convention. Exactly how much Mr. Tinubu paid or how much was paid on his behalf is not known. However, sharpedgenews.com learned that Tinubu’s attendance at the event may have been facilitated by his Chicago contacts, contrary to the impression that a personal invitation was issued to Mr. Tinubu by President Obama. Sharpedgenews.com further learned that it is the norm for American presidents to “minimize interactions with foreign contacts before and immediately after presidential elections,” which is another proof that it was impossible for Mr. Tinubu to have enjoyed the privilege of a personal, high-level invite from Mr. Obama. According to sharpedgenews.com investigations, the poor handling of what should have been a private self-improving outing for Mr.Tinubu was bungled by his media team, who tried to employ the opportunity to emotionally and politically hoodwink Nigerians in the mold of what is often referred to as a “been to” in Nigeria. In Charlotte and in London, Nigerians aware of the development could not help expressing disgust at the manner in which Sunday Dare and the publisher of African Abroad, Alex Kabbah, treated Tinubu like a tribal king. “If the man coughed, Alex Kabbah and Sunday Dare would near of bring down the roof because someone did not make a cup of water available for Asiwaju at the right time,” one of our citizen reporters volunteered, having been assigned to closely watch the role of the Tinubu team. “Sunday Dare wind-surfed as a big suck-up,” said one of the callers who took umbrage on the initial report. Sharpedgenews.com also observed that Tinubu was as well present at the convention of the US Republican Party which held the previous week in Tampa, Florida. Accompanying Mr. Tinubu on the trips was Ekiti State Governor Kayode Fayemi, who was a lot more restrained and less flamboyant than the ACN leader. Mr. Dele Alake, who also attended the event with Tinubu, was also of restrained comport. The designation of Mr. Tinubu as the official leader of opposition in Nigeria was also one of the reasons why sharpedgenews.com investigaged the so-called “gold card invitation” allegedly issued to Mr. Tinubu. Nigeria does not operate a parliamentary system of government where an official opposition leader is recognized. How exactly Mr. Tinubu got the description as leader of opposition, when he is not an elected official remains open to debate. |

IT may be harsh times for the average Nigerian out there, but those at the highest levels of power in Nigeria continue to enjoy lavish privileges, even as they recommend further austerity measures as the removal of oil subsidy for the rest of their fellow citizens who already are battling with harsh economic realities across the country. And in spite of denials coming from the powerful Minister of Finance, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, there are incontrovertible evidence that she is the owner of a property estimated at about eight million dollars (about N1.2 billion) located at the Maitama District, in the Federal Capital Territory city of Abuja. The Finance minister allegedly paid for the property located at No 3 Nwaora Close, off Gana Street, Abuja in November 2011, according to a source at the Property Management office. Mrs. Okonjo-Iweala, who previously was alleged to have pocketed about $2 billion through a United States based company owned by her brother, Chi-Chi Okonjo-GeorgeTown Consultancy, as commission in the last debt buy back deal under the President Olusegun Obasanjo’s administration, allegedly pressured then-FCT Minister, Mallam Nasir el-Rufai and the Ministry of Finance to accept her brother’s firm in business deals with the government. Five massive properties, with price tag between N1.25 Billion and N1.4 Billion, are situated on the very same street as the property believed to be owned by Dr. Okonjo-Iweala. “We still have other properties worth N1.25 Billion, N1.3 Billion and N1.4 Billion. The one we sold to madam was for N1.2 Billion,” said an Estate agent with EFAB. Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala was a Managing Director of the World Bank. From June to August 2006, she was Minister of Foreign Affairs of Nigeria, overseeing Nigeria’s External Relations. She also served from July 2003 to June 2006 as Minister of Finance and Economy of Nigeria and Head of Nigeria's much-acclaimed Presidential Economic team responsible for implementing a comprehensive home grown economic reform program. “J” level employees, or vice-presidents of the World Bank earn about $289,540. Senior vice presidents and managing directors who have made it to the “K” class officials receive as much as $311,000. The president's pay, when you include expenses, lands in the mid-$400,000 range. The Coordinating minister’s mansion is a 7-bedroom duplex with ‘Boys’ Quarters’ and a swimming pool. There is also a massive Master’s Bedroom with an adjacent bedroom dubbed “Madam’s Bedroom”. The mansion, which is still unfurnished, could wear a possible tag of over N2 billion after furnishing. The property is complete with top shelf marble imported from Italy, gold trimmings and chandeliers in the living rooms, bedrooms and a very expansive kitchen. The property was built by a popular Abuja estate mogul, and owner of EFAB Properties Limited, Fabian Nwaora. A source at the EFAB Properties who referred Dr. Iweala as “Madam” told investigative journalists that the mansion was the first to be purchased among several others in the estate. “Madam paid for the property long before others were even completed and so that one is out of the market. We only have the ones on No.1, No. 2, No. 4 available.” That deal reportedly led to her sack by the Obasanjo Administration, when he discovered that Okonjo-Iweala made tons of cash from the deal at the expense of Nigeria. She was removed from the economic team and redeployed to the Foreign Affairs ministry. Aside from Chi-Chi Okonjo who gets multi-million dollar contracts in Nigeria without due process through his sister, Ngozi, another very close friend of the finance minister who gets strong patronage is Bimbo Ogunseitan. In 2004, She sent a letter dated March 18, 2004, HMF/FMF/003, addressed to Mallam Nasir Ahmed el-Rufai, OFR, Minister of the Federal capital Territory, saying: “I am in receipt of your letter dated 15th March 2004 requesting an approval for a RUNNING OPEARTIONAL REVIEW ROR) on the Ministry of the Federal Capital Territory’s Operations. In your letter you stated that a consultant would be hired to review the internal organization processes of the FCT and the day to day finances of the FCT. “Please accept this letter as an approval for the Running Operational Review on the request indicated above. “Do accept the assurances of my continued highest regard. “Yours Sincerely, (Signed) Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Minister of Finance.” The Minister of Finance under the government of President Obasanjo reportedly steered public contracts to her brother worth up to $50 million, with the help of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Mr. Nasir El-Rufai, yet another WikiLeaks US cable issued in 2006 says. The contracts were said to have been awarded to the man, identified only as “JonJon,” for consulting work for the ministry. -- Dr. Iweala however issued a denial through her spokesman, Paul C Nwabuikwu, on Tuesday night, saying that she did not acquire a N1.2 billion mansion in Maitama, Abuja. According to him, the minister had no interest in the said property. But the statement failed to provide any evidence to prove falsity. The minister simply said she has no interest in the property. Yet, overwhelming evidence exist to prove she owns the mansion, even as claims otherwise. The statement from the minister reads: “It has been brought to our attention that an online news website, pointblanknews.com , has just published a story alleging that the CME and minister of finance have purchased a property worth N1.2billion in Maitama, Abuja. According to the website, the minister paid for the property in November 2011. “The story is totally false and without foundation. The minister has no interest of any sort in the property in question. The story also rehashed some previously published and discredited allegations against the minister and her younger brother. “It is simply the latest in a well financed smear campaign against the coordinating minister by persons and groups whose interests are profoundly selfish and anti-Nigeria.” Previously, Dr. Okonjo-Iweala pursued a 21-year career as a development economist at the World Bank, where she held the post of Vice-President and Corporate Secretary. This included two tours of duty (six years) working in the East Asia Region, the last tour (1997-2000) as Country Director Malaysia, Mongolia, Laos and Cambodia during the East Asian financial crisis; two duty tours in the Middle East Region, the last (2000-2003) as Director, Operations (deputy vice-president) of the region. Dr Okonjo-Iweala also served as Director of Institutional Change and Strategy (1995-1997). In this post she assisted with the implementation of the Bank’s reform agenda. From 1989 to 1991 she was Special assistant to the Senior Vice President, Operations, an assignment that enabled participation in high level policy formulation and discussions for countries as diverse as China and Burkina Faso. http://www.sharpedgenews.com/index.php/news/recent-news/714-hypocrisy-okonjo-iwealas-n12bn-mansion-uncovered |
I have listen to most of our pastors encouraging their members to pay their tithes at all times. Some go as far as rebuking their church members for not been sincere with their tithes. I think it will be good for our pastors to equally canvas their members to pay their tax as at when due. Lots of us don't even see it as a responsibility to their nation. If all of us can pay our tax as at when due, we can make a little change. |
THE Police Service Commission in Nigeria rose from its meeting last Thursday in Abuja to recommend two of its men, Mr. Babatunde Odine Jonathan and Sheik Umar Usman, both very senior officers of The Nigerian Police, for dismissal for acts of gross professional misconduct following accusations of receiving a bribe of four million naira to destroy the case file on an alleged killing of an unidentified teenager. Babatunde Jonathan, a boxer who currently resides somewhere in Nevada, in the United States, with the alias ‘Fighting Machine’ along with his partner in fraud and corruption Sheik Umar Usman, allegedly took a bribe of four million naira from one Mrs. Oyindamola Pemu-Amuka, in order to destroy incriminating evidence on the alleged ritual killings of the yet-to-be identified teenage boy about four years ago. Police sources confirmed that Babatunde Odine Jonathan, an officer then in charge of Department 13 Monitoring at the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in Panti, Yaba, Lagos, allegedly made confessional statements before Assistant Inspector General of Police, Mr. M. D. Abubakar, who was then the Lagos State Commissioner of Police; Mr. Leye Oyebade the then Deputy Commissioner of Police State CID Yaba, Lagos, now Assistant Commissioner of Police who was demoted to this present rank along with Nuhu Ribadu and CSP Tony Onyeagoro Ebere then Office in Charge of Homicide Department 4 of the state CID in Panti, Yaba, Lagos, now an Assistant Commissioner of Police and presently in Imo State. According to S. P. Jonathan, a female Lagos socialite based in London was arrested for an alleged ritual crime and detained in Panti for three days after which 4 million naira exchanged hands with the police, there after the female suspect was granted bail. Police sources also confirmed that SP Babatunde Odine Jonathan confessed to destroying the entire case file of Department 13, video clips showing the ritual killing of an unidentified 11-year old boy, CD plates and pictures relating to the entire ritual acts after the four million naira bribe had changed hands. It was also confirmed that shortly after the scandal blew open, Babatunde Odine Jonathan absconded from his duty post as officer in charge Department 13 since 2007, ignoring all summons both by the Police High Command and the Police Services Commission to show up and answer the allegation of the 4 million naira bribe. According to the same police sources, Mr. Babatunde Odine Jonathan on June 11, 2007, made an undertaking at the state C.I.D Panti Yaba to refund the 4 million naira he had received from the female suspect on or before the 30th of November, 2007 and urged the police High Command to deal with him if he fails to pay as agreed. It was also confirmed that the undertaking was made in presence of one Bash Ali, a fellow boxer of Jonathan’s who equally signed as a witness. In another document made available to sharpedgenews.com, Babatunde Odine Jonathan, made another undertaking promising to pay back the four million naira in or before 31st August 2007, asking the the Police High Command to be lenient with him as, according to him, he had put in 30 years of service as a veteran of the Nigerian Police Force. Police sources and documents made available confirmed that three police officers also involved in bribery allegation scandal that rocked state C.I.D Panti Yaba Lagos includes a female police officer, Toyin Omojola, with force number 023884; Sergent Ogadinma Eze, with force number 175586 and Patrick Ararumi with force numbers 188782, whose statements corroborated that of Babatunde Odine Jonathan as to having received four million naira bribe from a female suspect then under their custody at State C.I.D Panti Yaba Lagos. In another document made available to sharpedgenews.com from the office of the Deputy-Commissioner of Police at the State C.I.D in Panti, Yaba, Lagos, dated December 24 2008 with reference No CR.3000/LSX/F4/VOL.7/249, it was stated that the female suspect did hand over the sum of four million naira to SP Babatunde Odine Jonathan, then officer in charge of Department 13 (monitoring) state C.I.D Panti Yaba Lagos, in other to destroy an entire case file which Babatunde eventually destroyed. ‘Mrs. Oyindamola handed over a some of four million naira (N4,000,000.00) to SP Babatunde Odine Jonathan as part of a payment for a yet to be disclosed sum of money. It was at this stage that SP. Jonathan destroyed the case file of Department 13 sections, video clips, CD plates and other items of evidential value while Mrs. Oyindamola fled to London. The female suspect, identified by the police as Mrs. Oyindamola, told the police that she gave four million naira to SP. Babatunde Odine Jonathan as bribe in his office at state C.I.D in Panti, after which an earlier confessional statement made by her, pictures relating to the ritual acts involving her and video clips of same ritual acts were destroyed by SP. Babatunde Odine Jonanthan. Police sources, also confirmed to this reporter that the female suspect, a mother of five and a native of Owo town in Ondo State and wife of a prominent Nigerian, had since returned to London. She had also allegedly requested her husband to distance himself from the case. According to her, the four million naira that was given to the police as bribe was from her own sweat. Sources from the Police High Command revealed that the four million naira bribe scandal is the biggest bribe ever to be taken by a police officer in that department, describing the state C.I.D Panti as a money-spinning department. Investigations revealed that the admission of Babatunde Odine Jonathan, a Police Boxer who had represented Nigeria and the Police High Command in various local and international Boxing competitions who had put in almost 30 years in service, points to the fact that the State C.I.D Panti (now Musiliu Smith Street) Yaba Lagos needs a proper over-haul in all its departments. Public outcry about the level of extortion that goes on in state C.I.D Panti is alarming, and SP Babatunde Odine Jonathan 4 million bribe scandal is just one among the extortions that goes on there. The Police High Command in its effort to clean the C.I.D Panti Yaba Lagos of the likes of Babatunde Odine Jonathan recently deployed a seasoned police officer in the person of Mr. Abdulai Yuguda, a Deputy Commissioner of Police, to overhaul the departments and reposition the Apex Panti state C.I.D to a Metropolitan Police standard in investigations, administration and operations. In this regard, a Deputy Commissioner of Police, Hassan Biu, was promoted to a full-fledged commissioner of police based on the recommendations of the Inspector General of Police. Nine other serving police officers were reprimanded while a Deputy Superintendent of Police was reduced in rank for professional misconduct. The Chairman of the Police Serving Commission, Chief Pary Osayande, a himself a retired Deputy Inspector-General of Police, in exercising the powers vested in it by section 153 (i) and (m) of the 1999 constitution of the Federal Republic, and the Police Service Commission (establishment) Act 1999, deliberated on a number of issues in its resolve to reposition, reform and refocus the Nigerian Police Force to a security outfit that would meet the requirements of policing a dynamic Nigerian society. The Hounorable Chairman of the Commission Chief Pary Osayande, CFR, MPM, MNI, while congratulating the newly promoted officer, enjoined him to redouble his efforts towards good and efficient service delivery to Nigeria and the society at large, promising to work for a more dedicated and discipline police force. Following series of allegations of human rights abuse and violation of contracts deeds, the Senate committee on Federal Capital Territory, (FCT) yesterday summoned construction giant, Julius Berger, Chinese and firms to answer queries on abuse of Nigerian workers right and exploitation of the country’s natural resources without compensations. The committee Chairman, Senator Smart Adeyemi, who was astonished the importation of Chinese, Indian and German expatriates to man positions that can adequately be handled by Nigerians said the construction firms are consistently violating Nigeria laws because they were not properly monitored. Adeyemi asked: “How can you explain the importation of electric poles which can be made easily at Aba or the importation of Indian who is working as messenger in an Indian hospital when there are thousands of Nigerians who can do the same job even better? We have to gradually develop our people by empowering them but instead we are importing electric poles from China for God sake this is even beyond a petition from anybody, it is what I saw on ground myself. “Why should a Nigerian construction worker be paid N8, 000 monthly when the minimum salary has pegged at N18, 000 per month. Whereas his Chinese, Indian or German counterparts are paid in dollars?” He also frowned at a situation whereby construction firms crushed stones in the country without payment or any form of compensation to the government. He said all these materials were detailed in the contract agreement and therefore should be paid for. The committee threatened to terminate the contract of any contractors caught in the act of importing materials that are found in the country or importing expatriates for a job that could easily be done by Nigerians. Consequently, the committee joined the Immigration service in the summons to explain the reason behind it. The Permanent Secretary of works, Mr. Nathaniel Olorunfemi apparently jolted by the senators’ reaction to all the allegations immediately directed the Executive secretary who was also in attendance at the meeting with the committee to conduct a detail investigation into the activities of the construction firms and report back to him. The committee is also not happy with the way and manner Julius Berger is handling the Airport road project which is causing a lot of hardship for the road users. Adeyemi said a lot of motorists go through pains of long queues as a result of road diversions by the construction firm. Earlier the committee had frowned at the FCT management’s foot dragging on the demolition of the Mega Station at the central and a number of shopping malls which are on the corridor of the rail lines. The committee requested to know the minister that granted approval for the allocation of the land for the shopping malls and the NNPC Mega Stations knowing fully well that they are illegal. The Abuja light rail project was a four year contract funded by the Chinese government loan. It was started in 2009 and expected to be delivered in 2013 but was extended by another one year due to diversions in the rail lines occasioned by construction of houses in some areas. But the senators warned that the diversion in the rail lines should not be at any extra costs to the government. The committee also noted that the N800 million appropriated for the contract in the 2011 budget was missing in the FCT presentation to the committee an omission which the Permanent Sec said was caused by typographical error. Adeyemi said the committee is particularly concerned about the rail project because it will create more jobs for the teeming jobless youths of the country which already constitute security threat to the nation. “I have always been saying that the greatest security threat we have in the country today is unemployment and if the issue of unemployment is addressed Nigeria will know peace. But if it is allowed to go beyond the stage it is now, it will be very difficult for many of us to stay in the comfort of our homes,” he said. Source: http://www.sharpedgenews.com |
http://www.sharpedgenews.com/index.php/news/recent-news/38-us-begins-deporation-process-against-2900-convicted-illegal-aliens Authorities arrested about 2,900 illegal immigrants with prior criminal convictions in the U.S.in a seven-day nationwide operation, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) said on Wednesday. ``You are going to see a sustained focus on criminal offenders from this agency," ICE Director John Morton told reporters. ``These are not the kind of people we want walking our streets." Authorities arrested 2,901 people in the week long ``Cross Check'' operation, described by the agency as the biggest of its kind, officials said. Arrests were made in all 50 U.S. states and in four U.S. territories, officials said. Those arrested included citizens of Mexico, the Dominican Republic, Panama, Honduras and Nigeria, officials said. All those arrested had previously been convicted of crimes in the U.S. and will be deported, officials said. More than 1,600 had felony convictions, including manslaughter, attempted murder and drug trafficking, they added. Those arrested also included gang members and sex offenders. At least 1,282 of those arrested had multiple criminal convictions, officials said. Morton estimated that about a million illegal immigrants who have criminal convictions and are subject to removal are still in the U.S. The agency said it deports about 390,000 people a year, about half of them convicted criminals. Illegal immigration is a hot political issue in the U.S., where more than 11 million illegal immigrants live and work, according to the Pew Hispanic Centre. States including Arizona and Georgia have tried to enact their own laws cracking down on illegal immigration, arguing that the federal government has done too little to stop it. The White House said in August that the U.S. government will review its deportation caseload to keep low-priority cases from resulting in removal. Democratic congressional leaders praised the move and said it would ease the way for individuals who came to the U.S. illegally as children and have already spent years in the country to stay and work legally. Texas Governor Rick Perry, front-runner in the race for the Republican presidential nomination to face President Barack Obama in the November 2012 election, has been accused by members of his own party for not being tough enough on illegal immigration. Rivals have blasted Perry's state policy allowing children of illegal immigrants living in Texas to pay the same cheaper in-state college tuition rates that other Texas children pay |
Nigeria continues its search to get it right on its national identification card as the country plans to spend another 2 billion dollars on the project which an expatriate stooge of the former ruling clique once described as a fat cow waiting for everyone to milk. Gilbert Chagouri, a Nigerian-Lebanese told the country’s highest law making body in 2000, after collecting an estimated one billion dollars on the project that did not fly. It is estimated that over two billion dollars has been wasted till date. But the country’s Federal Executive Council has a renewed hope as it said on Wednesday in Abuja, that is has approved 2 billion dollars for the implementation of the first phase of a Unified Identity Management System for Nigerians from 18 years and above. The Minister of Information, Mr. Labaran Maku, disclosed this after the FEC meeting, presided over by President Goodluck Jonathan at the State House. Briefing State House Correspondents after the meeting which lasted for about eight hours, Maku said the new National Identity Card would be a digital biometric chip to be used for many purposes. The minister said the project, which would be managed by the National Identity Management Commission, would be executed in conjunction with different agencies of government. According to him, the new integrated system, will network all existing data from agencies such as INEC, FRSC and the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), among others, to create a common data base for their usages. He said the new system will reduce cost of data management by several public institutions, including banks and pension commission. Besides, the minister said the new system would be useful for national security management since all citizens' data were expected to be captured. Maku said the first phase of the project as approved by FEC, was expected to start from 2011 and spread to 2013. The Council also approved the professionalisation and pooling of Planning and Policy Analysis Officer cadre in the federal public service for deployment into various Ministries, Department and Agencies (MDAs). Maku said the approval was given by the Council to strengthen planning, policy analysis and data gathering functions in MDAs, particularly in the execution of government projects. ``It has been observed over time that government programmes and projects have suffered due to lack of data, analysis and well coordinated plans.’’ ``Also evaluation of project execution and performance has been very difficult because data collection and analysis have been rather uncoordinated. ``In view of the present emphasis on the execution of national transformation programme toward the realisation of national vision 20: 20 20, planning should now take centre stage in the public service.’’ The officer, according to the minister, will be under the coordinating supervision of the National Planning Commission and will be used in the process and formulation of plans, monitoring and evaluation, and data gathering. source--http://www.sharpedgenews.com |
A scheme by the Commissioner of the Ondo State Police Command aimed at harassing and extorting money from helpless and defenseless villagers around the state has caught the attention of the public. The people of a commercial village, Ayede-Ogbese in Akure North Local Government Area, are still agonizing over an expeditionary raid on the town on the orders of the State Police Commissioner, Sani Mogaji, saying that they want Governor Olusegun Mimiko, the Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Afeeze Ringim and President Goodluck Jonathan, to recommend him for immediate termination. According to investigations, the Police Commissioner Mogaji ordered ten Toyota Hilux trucks to invade the town for drug dealers and armed-robbers on Friday, September 8, 2011. Sharpedgenews.com learnt that the alleged chase after criminals which the police mischievously labeled as a search for the hideout of unscrupulous elements was only to settle a personal animosity that arose from the dastardly hit and run case by a reckless police vehicle three years ago, as a result of which two siblings belonging to one Mr. and Mrs. Akin Ajileye were killed. The police did not apologize to the Ajileye couple after their police driver had gruesomely killed their two children, instead they swore to come back and kill everything that has life in the town. But the event that led to the latest raid on Ayede-Ogbese was triggered by the case of a driver who refused to give bribe at an illegal check-point mounted close to the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA). The unnamed driver was chased all the way to Ayede-Ogbese where the road-rage ended in a crash. When the accident happened, the people of the town, still recovering from the sad loss of the Ajileye’s children, threatened to burn down the police vehicle which they later released when the police commissioner entered a plea with them. The corrupt police commissioner later returned to punish the townsfolk. The owner of the vehicle whom the police nearly chased to death is still being held by Police Commissioner Mogaji, who has promised to release his body to the family when he is done with him. The police continued its sustained violations and harassment of the people of Ayede-Ogbese, until they allegedly came about two months ago and were challenged by rural folks who are mainly cultivators of cash and food crops. However, there are deviants who cultivate marijuana thus affording the police the excuse of carrying out raids by claiming that they are looking for criminals. The Director-General of Nigeria’s anti-drug body, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Mr. Femi Ajayi, said his organization was not aware of the incessant raids on Ayede-Ogbese. The town’s monarch, a professor of law and retired judge/member of the Code of Conduct tribunal, Professor Peter Adetunbi Oluyede, has always expressed zero-tolerance for Indian-hemp cultivation and hosted a joint campaign with NDLEA earlier in the year to promote the World Anti-Narcotic celebration. Yet the police in Ondo State spited Oba Oluyede and his chiefs, by acting in complete disregard and entering his town and effecting indiscriminate arrests of everyone that was above age seven. When the police raided the town from around 9am, the morning of Friday September 8, they allegedly made their entry through three strategic entry points. They did not spare schools or mechanic workshops. “It was a campaign to intimidate, provoke and cause bloodshed and complete breakdown of law and order. Whoever was unlucky to be arrested, even underage children of seven were not spared”, said a village resident who spoke under the condition of anonymity to escape the vindictive police in the state. Villagers were recklessly arrested but the police onslaught was an avenue for brisk business, as the police took between five and ten thousand naira before releasing their captives. And when the Alayede of Ayede-Ogbese, Oba Oluyede sent emissaries to plead for the release of the captives, the police disrespected, mocked and threatened to shoot them. The local Anglican priest, Canon Oshotayo and the community’s Catholic Reverend Father, were not excluded. The NDLEA boss, Mr. Ajayi, said he was not aware of the anti-drug raid from the police and has immediately requested the Ondo State NDLEA command to investigate the root of the police actions. Checks conducted by sharpedgenews.com however reveal that Police Commissioner Sani Mogaji acted unilaterally and arbitrarily in using extreme maximum force against Ayede-Ogbese people as a money-making scheme from time to time. Police insiders from Ondo State alleged that this unscrupulous police boss has promised two more raids on inhabitants of Ayede-Ogbese, whose mainstay is cultivation of cocoa, timber, and other cash crops. The raid on Ayede-Ogbese was jointly carried-out by Okuta Elerinla, Ayede-Ogbese police post, and the so-called SARS (Special Anti-Robbery Squad) in Akure, acting on the orders of the Police Commisioner Sani Mogaji. A coalition of 45 NGOs under the umbrella of RIGHTS MONITORING GROUP, has asked the Attorney General of the Federation and the Code of Conduct Bureau to arrest and prosecute former Lagos state Governor AHMED BOLA TINUBU to answer his case before the Code of Conduct Tribunal. The group which petitioned the PRESIDENCY and The Code of Conduct Tribunal over the reluctance of the AGF TO CONTINUE THE TRIAL OF Tinubu for maintaining several foreign bank accounts while in office stated in the letter titled :Sustaining public interest in the prosecution of Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the Code of Conduct Tribunal ,that it was in the public interest and will be in conformity with anti corruption stance of the Government and Rule of Law to continue the trial which was adjourned sine die in 2007 when Tinubu claimed immunity as Governor . The letter ref RMG/SH/013/G/10 dated 16 sept,2010 signed by its National Coordinator MR Olufemi Aduwo, stated that “Sen. Bola Tinubu has made desperate effort to make RMG soft pedal on the issue “ and expressed regret that despite open publication in the media - PUNCH NEWSPAPER 25 April 2007 pg 2,THISDAY FEB 2,2003 Pg 23, and its open letter published in the COMPASS of Sept 2, 2010, and the Nigerian Tribune the Attorney General has refused to reopen the case since the former Governor was not under any immunity, thereby giving the impression that he is above the law. The group recalled that the CODE OF CONDUCT Bureau in a recent press briefing admitted that Tinubu has a case to answer, questioning why he is being treated as a sacred cow, it said. It noted that former Governors like Ibori, Igbinedion, Orji Kalu, and Ladoja were being tried by EFCC and Code of Conduct Tribunal and their cases were not politicized like Tinubu’s case. The group recalled that Tinubu faced similar’’ Court trial in the USA about violation of US law on financial transaction in Sept 15 1993 where he engaged the procedure of Plea Bargain to get the sum of 490,000 US dollars confiscated to the American Government’’. In the charge sheet the particulars of the criminal allegations against Tinubu was as follows: Operation of 10 foreign accounts while serving as Governor in violation of S.7 of the Code of Conduct Bureau and Tribunal Act cap 56.LFN 1990— 1 First Heritage Bank country club Hills Illinois USA account no 263226700 2 Citibank NA New York USA operated in the name of Bola Tinubu and Compass Finance and Investment co ltd account no 39483134, 39483396, 4650279566 3 Citibank international New York with acct 52050-89451952, 5205089451953 4 HSBC 177, Great Portland street London WIW6QJ Acct 71253670 sort code 40-03-15 5 HSBC177 Great Portland street London WIW6QJ with acct name BOLA Oluremi Tinubu 6 HSBC 177 Great Portland street London WIW6QJ Acct no 04320002DN 7 HSBC 177 Great Portland street London WIW6QJ With acct name Tinubu Habibat Oyindamola (miss) acct no 1320960111 8 HSBC 177 Great Portland street London WIW6QJ with acct no 172447101 and Acct name Tinubu Zainab Abisola (miss) 9 HSBC 177 Great Portland street London WIW6QJ With Acct no 1916667988 acct name Tinubu Oluremi Sade 10 HSBC 177 Great Portland street London WIW6QJ 41421522 ACCT name Oluremi Sade Tinubu. Affidavit was deposed by Mrs Ikechi Iwuagwu deputy director Code of Conduct Bureau stating that Tinubu failed to disclose the accounts, but Tinubu raised the issue of his immunity which made the tribunal to adjourn the case sine die The Presidency and the office of the Attorney General has not responded to the petition while the CODE OF CONDUCT TRIBUNAL in its response to the RMG acknowledged the letter . In the letter signed by the Ag Chief Registrar Abdulmalik Shuaibu ref CCT/HQ.149/S/1/77 dated 8 Nov,2010, the tribunal stated’’ we fully understand the purpose and intendment of the contents of the said letter but advise that the Code of Conduct Tribunal being an impartial arbiter adjudicatory body) csn not suo moto relist this matter which was adjourned sine die sometime in 2007.The office of the Hon Attorney General of the Federation and the Chairman Code of Conduct Bureau who are responsible for prosecuting offenders before the tribunal would be the most appropriate authorities to direct your complaints” Meanwhile a pro-democracy group based in UK Transparency and Justice in Nigeria (TAJIN) has called on the Code of Conduct Bureau to re- open the criminal prosecution of Tinubu. In its reaction to statement made by Alh. Lai Mohammed Publicity secretary of the A C N on the alleged anticipated arrest of Asiwaju Tinubu, the group said the A CN was only trying to politicize a purely criminal matter bordering on abuse of office and corruption. The group said but for the apparent connivance of the relevant security and anticorruption agencies, Asiwaju Tinubu should be languishing in jail for several corruption and criminal issues which are glaring to the blind. The group in a statement by its Coordinator Dr Jide Adesodun decried the penchant for A CN for double standard in its public utterances and statements saying that while the A C N would readily applaud the trial of PDP leaders and other Nigerians for any offence however trivial, it will read political victimization when the issue concern its members . ‘’When Bode George and Ibori were being tried ,Tinubu and the A C N used the media and its allies in the judiciary and security to hound them to jail, now that TINUBUs hideous criminal tendencies are coming out it is now political victimization, giving Nigerians the impression that there are 2 sets of laws, one for the ruling party and another for the opposition parties’’ the group said adding that Government agencies should never be intimidated to prosecute any offender which ever his or her political affiliation or financial status. ‘’The arrogance and the self advertised immunity from the hands of the law by TINUBU is anathema to the rule of law and should be resisted by all lovers of democracy’’, the group stated advising the former Governor to defend himself rather than whipping up unnecessary sentiment through the media. http://www.sharpedgenews.com/news/2011/01-12-11/tinubu.shtml |
