Politics / Re: Gay Nigerian Activist Bisi Alimi Shares His Compelling Story by ayosob1: 5:16pm On Sep 25, 2010
I am truly embarassed by the high level of ignorance displayed by users of this forum against gays. It is amazing that in the 21st Century society still have bigots with their heads in the sand.

From time of old homosexuality has been around and is still current today. Alimi took a brave and courageous step by telling the world that homosexuality exists in Nigeria as it does in every other part of the world. Homosexuality lifestyle may not be palatable to everyone, equally as heterosexual, but nonetheless, it is a lifestyle for millions of people.

Many of the individuals that have projected hatred, here are probably closet gays themselves. I am wondering as a society is it ok for gays to be regarded as a second class citizens when they work and contribute equally to society like any heterosexual? Is it also acceptable to encourage gays to continue with the trend of dating a man and a woman for fear of exposure? I know many bi gay Nigerians, and they are with women because it is what society and family expect from them, not because they love their women, because their true feeling is for a man. A friend of mine is due to get married next week in Ibadan, and he is not really into his wife to be, but he is getting married because it is what is expected of him.

It is a nonesense to suggest that gays do not exist among Muslims, as again I have many gay Muslim friends as well as Christians.

Gay people can and do pursue meaningful life equal to that of heterosexual. I and my boyfriend have been in a relationship for over four years. We plan to have a civil partnership ceremony in a few month times. Of course, the ceremony won't be held in 9ja, as unfortunately Nigeria’s law statutes do not recognise gay relationships not to mention marriage.

I am hopeful about the odds that Nigerians will pull their heads from out of the sand and face up to life in the 21St Century. Homosexuality is here with us and all you bigots out there need to get over it and embrace it.
