Kaduna has always been a volatile state dating back to the 80's. That's long before Elrufai dreamt of becoming governor. This was Bala Barnabas Bantex, Elrufai's Christian deputy from Southern Kaduna during his first tenure, narrating how his own people refused to accept him despite Elrufai running an inclusive government. He later declined to continue when the hostilities became too much. He opted to run for Senate under the APC so he can give his people closer representation but they refused to vote for him. He later died of a broken heart. This prompted Elrufai to run on muslim-muslim ticket in his second term by picking a female muslim from Southern Kaduna. He contested and won his second term and did it back-to-back to prove his point.
