Guber poll: Lagos APC LG aspirants threaten showdown over party's failure to refund chairmanship fees Local government chairmanship aspirants under the All Progressives Congress, APC, at the 2021 local government chairmanship election in Lagos State have threatened showdown with the party in the state over the party's failure to refund their money used in purchasing the chairmanship aspirant forms. The crisis is coming in a few days to the governorship election which comes up on March 11 this year. The 174 aggrieved aspirants said having paid over N2 million each to purchase the form, they were edged out by the party leaders in the state as those who didn't buy the form were allowed to contest and won the election. Some of them who spoke with The Nigerian Xpress Newspaper said the party promised to refund their money but two years later have failed to fulfill it's promise They also said while aspirants into the national House of Assembly as well as the councilors have been refunded their money, they are yet to get their money back. " Our problem within the party started after the concocted local government primaries that were historically highly contested with large numbers of aspirants, mainly youth. The leadership in Lagos noted there were discrepancies so they removed the former chairman, Alhaji Balogun but failed to pacify members of the party especially those that purchased forms. To now rob salt on the sore, people who lost at primaries for state and national assembly positions were refunded. Seating councilors and immediate past councilors were given N1million each while 2021 aspirants that made payment to state covers were left out after being robbed of the electoral process. While we pledged our continued loyalty to the party and the assurance to work tediously for the re-election of our governor, I will also advise our governor to immediately refund and pay the 2021 Chairmanship aspirants back their money and also ensure all councilorship aspirants within same period are refunded,"said Honourable Niyikun, one of the aggrieved members. Also reacting, another aggrieved member, Hon. Wale Shibi said: " We had meeting at the party Secretariat in Acme, Ikeja , with the former Vice Chairman, Hon ibirogba, and we tabled our grievances and the agreement reached with the party chairman who promised our money will be refunded a week after the presidential election. The incumbent Vice Chairman Hon. Maiyegun told us, he wasn't aware of the agreement, but he heard about us and said the governor will pay us. but we need to exercise patience and later said he will discuss the matter with Mr Governor. He also said we should be hopeful as the money will be paid hopefully before the next election on March 11,2023. but till now we didn't see anything." Hon. Kunle Ogunlade, another member of the aggrieved aspirants said the leadership of the party in the state is not alive to its responsibilities. 'The truth might be bitter. Our party slept on their bed the way they laid it and woke up accordingly Is it not the governor that selected the LGA Chairmen without due process? Many of them are people not accepted by the majority of the people in their LGA’s including the party members. Many of the LGA Chairmen are not taking care of the party members and have turned themselves to God and above the party. They have disenfranchised many party members.Like i said the governor is benefiting from his handwork. We the aspirants that the majority accepted are the ones now begging the governor and the party leaders to accept us and consider us.We are even begging for our money they took unjustly. With all the bad treatments meted out on the majority of us we still stand by the party. On the day of the election I moved around from polling unit to polling unit spending the little change I have to entertain and encourage people while the LGA chairmen stayed in their offices. We keep showing love but God of justice will judge everybody. Most of us are party faithful and have no other place to go.So they are capitalizing on that but God of justice is watching.Let them increase the dollars given to the above mentioned people maybe they will do better. All this is aside millions given to leaders in each LGA’s for the election that did not get to the people.God will see us through. We will keep fighting because we can not afford to let Lagos get to the hands of another party. We have become a slave of circumstances," he lamented. One Hon. Abiodun also said : " While we were showing understanding with the party and governor to refund our monies after the presidential elections, the governor paid out $10,000 each to the unpopular imposed council chairmen, commissioners and others to do mobilization for the election which they pocketed without doing anything. One gets demoralized when you get such information on an election you went all out for including spending one's personal money. Let them talk about our refund first, otherwise I will move nowhere for no kind of mobilization." Also in his reaction, Hon. Oluwatosin Onamade, who contested for Ijede Local government chairmanship said: " Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu is a gentleman of worth and dignity, an uncommonly humane and modest person, who says and makes it a reality. I will personally be voting for Babajide Sanwo-Olu in the March 11th governorship elections but cooperation of all former chairmanship aspirants is needed. How many elderly people or traditional elders did we see on the last day of presidential election voting? We are pleading with the governor and the executive management of our great party in Lagos state to fulfill their promises on the refund before 11th March 2023. We believe that teamwork is very important in the coming election and it shall end in praise. |
(OPINION) AND THE BATON CHANGES… A Nation in Search of a Fulfilled Future Goes to the Polls Emiko Aruofor. Come February 25, 2023, the Nigerian nation will activate the largest democratic process ever embarked upon on the African continent. 93.5 million eligible voters will have the right on that day, and for several weeks after, to go out and choose the deciders and directors of our future. This quadrennial pilgrimage to the polls has been entrenched and consistently embarked upon six times since the re-establishment of the third republic in 1999. The inalienable implication of this reality is that we, as a people cannot in truth distance ourselves from the choices we had willfully made for good or for bad, for progress or setback every time in the past 24 years that we have gone to the ballot box and imprinted our thumb to install the next habitués of our political and in fact, existential institutions; the legislative arms, from the Senate, the House of Representatives through to the State Assemblies; formulators and guardians of our constitution and the overarching supervisors of the executive arm of governance, from the President, to the State Governors and Local Government Chairpersons, all the way to the minutest Wards. For us to evaluate where we’re at and where we should be heading to, it would be good to look at our place in the world vis a vis our peculiar circumstances. Nigeria is one of 96 acknowledged democracies out of the 195 countries on the globe. We are a country of the future, as over 70% of our population are youths and a great percentage of them are entitled to vote this time around. About 78% of our people are literate, which to all intent and purposes should serve us well in taking the right decisions. Overall, if you look at the pluses, such as an oil-backed economy, bountiful agriculture and a dynamic, broad-based workforce, we should be the envy of any other country on the continent. From the three regions inherited at independence in 1960, we have grown to a federation of 36 self governing states as well as the federal capital in Abuja. This diversification of governance was supposed to engender a focused, grassroots-oriented administration across the broad swathes of our society. Unfortunately, 109 years after the installation of the Nigeria experiment, we are not confident to espouse any indication that we are on the right path, as sadly, we are in far from celebratory shape. As the sunset closes on another eight years of a duly elected set of leaders, the circumstances of our lives beggars the question; what and how is anything different this time around? If we view our present form of government from its Greek background of people (demo) and rule (krato) there is a clear understanding that democracy is, as succinctly presented by Abraham Lincoln in his post-American civil war Gettysburg address, “the government of the people, for the people, by the people”. It follows that we have always been expected to elect representatives across all tiers of government that would come into office for the purpose of attending to our needs with a determination to deliver on our expectations. In other words, we vote to achieve a better life for ourselves, our families and by extension, the society as a whole. To determine if our democratic efforts have yielded ‘fruit’, it would be worthwhile to compare the experiences of this iteration of our political dispensation with what had come earlier. The almost one hundred years of colonial overlords were definitely not intended to serve us. It was a period of ruler takes all and devoted to the relentless extraction of everything of value. But, in the process of harnessing the resources required by the British, the North and South provinces were linked to create our present status. Rail lines stretched from the coastal ports to the farthest reaches of the Sahel to evacuate the goodies of the land. Our grandparents were educated as produce buyers and tally clerks and found abode, comfort and acceptance in areas far from their places of origin. By the time we became a self-fulfilling republic in 1963, it was a given that you could and would holiday with family and friends in far off regions of the country, particularly railway men, the police, teachers and nurses. The ‘oyinbos’ left three highly productive regions, but, they also left behind grinding poverty in the hinterlands. The short lived first republic embarked on the entrenchment of our people in the pursuit of governmental relevance. The nouveau politicians played to the citizens’ yearnings, spinning tales of grandiose expectations and limitless promises. The results of the cleavage to our perceived cohesion and fragile unity soon brought in the militarisation of our existence. Since we are comparing phases of our lives, the long reign of the ‘military industrial complex’ would bring the creation of first, twelve states and later thirty six states with a geographically central federal administration in Abuja. The intention was to allow for the actualisation of governance depth at the minutest level of society. Rather than the grandiosity of just Lagos, Ibadan, Enugu and Kano, at least 36 state capitals now actualise the wishes of the people around them, or are supposed to. Unfortunately, rather than the economically independent regions of yore, many of these politically carved out states are not self-sustaining and most would stagnate and go into paralysis without quarterly federal largesse funded mostly from oil money. The years of democracy have sadly not built on the original idea of bringing a sense of belonging to every man, woman and child. In place of a single universal ideal of a Nigerian nation, balkanisation has driven a wedge between previous hegemonies. The stark absence of final mile presence of governance beyond the state capitals has left the rural environments where most Nigerians live in the hands of militias, brigands and other rent seekers pitilessly haranguing and sometimes displacing whole communities. All of these would be bearable if at least, people could feed and have the semblance of a manageable existence. But, when the continued evisceration of the worth of the Naira is added to the existing devastation of the quality of life, we find ourselves at the crossroads. Do we turn back to times better not remembered? Do we lay down and bear the weight of our diminished circumstances? Or do we look forward to a more glorious future and step into the promise and fulfilment of our admirable potentials? The answer as they say, lies in our hands, or should we say, our thumbs. As we step out on February 25 and the weeks after to express our democratic right to choose who to hand over the baton of the future of ourselves, our children and unborn generations to, would we, as has happened in the past, bequeath our very existence to those who would dig us further into the gruelling abyss of the present times? or do we have a rethink and embark on a rebirth of our dear nation by electing only those whose thinking and orientation is aligned to our yearnings for peace, progress and the universal pursuit of happiness. The answer lies in that little sheet…the PVC and what we do with it. As published in Ikoyi Club Harmony Magazine, February 2023 |
Alimosho Food Festival excites stakeholders, urge govt to tackle inflation Stakeholders at the first edition of Alimosho Food Festival were full of excitement at the debut of the event, and called on the government to solve rising inflation in the country and tackle food shortages. The festival was held on Saturday, Jan 28, at the Youth Centre, Abesan, Lagos. The stakeholders lamented high rate of poverty in the country and called for urgent measures from govt. Mr Lawal Isiaka, the Chairman Sunquest Discovery Limited, the organisers of the festival, who spoke on the reason behind the event said the festival was organised to give opportunities to food vendors to showcase their products as well as allow consumers to purchase food at cheaper prices against the high cost in the market. According to him, Alimosho is the largest local government in Lagos State, and was chosen because of its high population as it would afford more people the opportunity to benefit from the event. Lawal lamented that high cost of food as well as food shortages have become a menace in Nigeria which should be addressed by the government. He therefore called on the government to tackle the problem so as to make life easier for Nigerians. He added that the festival also afforded the organizers the opportunity to test run an application which would allow food vendors to market their goods online. One of the vendors, Mrs Omoluyi Esther, of Dorchess Food, who deals in sales of local food commended the organizers for putting together the event. She lamented the daily increase in food materials which she said is affecting many companies involved in food production. "As small scale business owners, there are challenges we are facing such as daily increases in prices of food. Today you buy something for N200 and tomorrow it goes up to N500. Government should try to make sure there is money in circulation and bring down prices of food stuff. In that way, they can address food scarcity," she said. Another vendor, Mrs Adekunle Olamide of Checkers Food Limited said for the government to reduce poverty, ' it should help to reduce in prices of goods.' " They should make sure there is stability in the economy. The instability is affecting all brands and they are finding it hard to get materials for production. When they increase prices of their goods, it's the consumers that bear the brunt. So the government should help us stabilize Nigeria's economy so that brands will find it easier to produce," she urged. A Nollywood star, Joseph Momodu, who was the special guest at the event commended the quality of food on display at the festival. "The kind of food you see here , you might need to order them online before u get them but this event offers people the opportunity to get them at their doorsteps and cheaper. The festival is of great significance to everyone," he said. He added: " There is hunger in the land. The government should help us subsidize food stuff to the nearest minimum to make food available. They should also control inflation especially the dollar scarcity so that the common man can do his or her business. They promised us that dollar will go down but it's not so now. Government should do their business so that the masses can enjoy." TheCreative Director for the event, Adekoya Afeez commended the vendors for the quality of food products at the event and promised the festival will also be taken to other parts of the state. Aside Sunquest Nigeria Limited, organisers of the event, other partners of the festival includes Zenith Bank, BrandRus and MMS Events

‘Assassins after my life,’ woman cries out, seeks IGP protection ….goes into hiding A business woman, Mrs Komolafe Adenike Susannah, has cried out over recent attacks on her and family by some “unknown persons." The mother of three, who owns a business center in Mushin area of Lagos State, said her family had come under physical attacks by some persons, with one of such attacks occurring in January this year when she was beaten to stupor by unknown individual on her way home. According to her, she reported the incident at the Olosan Police Station, Mushin, with the police promising to investigate the matter but no one has been arrested till date. She said further attacks happened in April this year, with the attackers inflicting further injuries on her mouth, and warning her they would further deal with her and her husband, which has now made her and children to go into hiding. " A week after our arrival in Nigeria in January, in broad daylight, I was beaten to stupor by some people on commercial motorcycle. The attackers said they will deal with me and my husband, who is a legal practitioner. Early April this year, the same thing happened close to my shop when two people on ' okada' came down while I was waiting for somebody, and gave me a blow again in my mouth and told me to tell my husband to steer clear of them. Since then we have been living in fear," she said. “ The business woman added that the minder of her son who normally go to the boy's school to pick him after closing school hours, was hypnotised on her way from picking the boy to the level where she could not comprehend anything again. She added: “My husband and I had to change the schools of our children from one location to another and now scatter them in different schools for security reasons. My first son was taken to military school and the second daughter was taken to a Catholic school and the third to another international school. She called on the Inspector General of Police to come to her aid. It is recalled her husband, Richard Adekanmi Komolafe, a legal practitioner and right activists, Mr Richard Adekanmi Komolafe, had last month cried out over alleged incessant physical attacks and threat to his life and that of his wife and family. According to the lawyer, his family had come under both physical and spiritual attacks from unknown people as a result of his activism and numerous court cases he had won against some prominent members in the society, thereby putting the life of his wife and children in danger.

Lawyer cries out over threat to life, goes underground One of 'Nigeria's foremost legal practitioners and right activists, Mr Richard Adekanmi Komolafe has cried out over incessant physical attacks and threat to his life and that of his wife and family. According to the lawyer, his family has come under both physical and spiritual attacks from unknown people as a result of his activism and numerous court cases he had won against some prominent members in the society, thereby putting the life of his wife and children in danger. The latest of such attacks is the one that happened to his wife shortly after he won a court case against the Nigeria police and a notorious land grabber in Bariga. In January 2018, Komolafe Adekanmi had filed a matter before a Federal High Court, Lagos, on behalf of one Okesuji Obatoyinbo, Kunle Amosun, Eunice Obasohan and Stephen Ogunleye, 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th applicants respectively , against the Inspector General of Police, Assistant Inspector General of Police, Commissioner of Police, Lagos State, one Patrick Atayero (ACP), Zone 2, Adeniyi Adekunle (DSP), John Faluyi (ASP), Emmanuel Victor (SGT), also of Zone 2, Gbagada police station, Alex Gwarzah and Kayode Aiyetiwa, the 1st to 9th respondents respectively. In the suit FHC/L/CS/46/2018, Komolafe had accused the respondents of ' arresting, threatening to arrest, detaining the applicants and violating the applicant's fundamental right over a 12,605 square meters landed property in Ilupeju, Lagos. According to the Motion on notice filed before the court, the applicants had purchased the property in 1972 but let part of it to one Mrs Ilaka for an event centre. The applicants later decided to develop the land into residential housing units. Trouble however began when, during construction, some people began to harass workers on the site and threatened them to leave the land as well as asked for huge payment of money. According to the suit “discreet investigation revealed that the brain behind this is the 9th respondent.' The 9th respondent was said to have "turned to the police to achieve his goal by lodging " ill- conceived complaints against the applicants' which led to the arrest of workers on the site and their detention for two nights at the Gbagada police station on the allegation that they were members of a terrorist group in Lagos. In spite of the intervention of a deputy commissioner of police at the State Command which led to the release of the detained workers, the 8th respondent was said to have ' ran to the 2nd, 4th, 5th, 6th and 7th respondents to use their office to subdue the applicants and their workers.' This led to further threats, harassment and intimidation from 5th respondent. Therefore the applicants had urge the court ' to restrain the respondents from further arrest of the applicants and declare that the action of the 9th respondent to use the police harass and arrest the applicants is unlawful and illegal.' During trial, Komolafe had told the court that he received further threats from the respondents, threatening to deal with him if the judgement should go against them. In his judgment, Justice (Prof) ChukaObiozor berated the police for its involvement in the issue. “The police have no business dabbing in a question of land ownership. I have failed to find criminality in the allegations against the applicants to justify the arrest, threat, harassment and detention of the applicants by the 2nd, 4th to 8th respondents at the behest of the 9th respondent," the judge said. The court therefore ordered the respondents to stop harassment of the applicants on the said property." Substantial amounts was also awarded against the respondents. Shortly after the judgement against the respondents, Komolafe said one evening two men on commercial motorcycle accosted his wife on her way home. They told her to warn her husband that they would deal with him and his family if he continues to fight against them, that their lives is in danger. " My wife was coming home one evening when a commercial motorcycle suddenly pulled up by her side. One man came down and suddenly began to verbally abuse her telling her that her husband is stubborn. The man further told her that if I thought could continue to win cases against them, they will deal with me and my family and told her to warn me to stay away from them. They even mentioned the name of the schools my children attends to let her know they have been monitoring our movement. The two men later sped off on the motorcycle. As a result of the threat, we had to relocate our children to different schools. My wife and children had to also travel abroad for a week to douse the tension, escape further threats and avoid possible kidnapping of the children," Komolafe lamented. He added the matter was reported at the Mushin police station but the police are yet to fish out the perpetrators. He further said since the incident occurred, he and his family now lives in palpable fear as they do not know what could happen next. He has also gone underground but vowed to continue to fight against injustice. It is recalled some gunmen in 2017 invaded Lagos State Model College , Igbo Nla , Epe ,Lagos , and abducted the principals and some students. The kidnappers were said to have stormed the school in the early hours when the students were at the morning assembly. The gunmen abducted the principal of the junior secondary school, Mr .Oyesola and Mr Akirinmade who is the Principal of the senior secondary school. They also abducted some of the students.

The Chief Executive Officer, UT Homes and UT Financial Services, Mr Ade Adebajo, has urged government to focus more attention on providing affordable housing for all Nigerians much as he called on the public to take advantage of the low cost housing which the company is embarking upon. The United Kingdom trained financial expert and property guru lamented that many Nigerians are suffering from lack of affordable housing as a result of housing deficits in the country and urged government to come to the rescue. At the foundation laying/ground breaking ceremony of the construction of 10 units of luxury and affordable bungalows named Campagne De-Maison, by the company in Mowe, Ofada, Ogun State, Adebajo said private investors have important roles in ensuring affordable housing is available to all Nigerians. "Many Nigerians are still tenants because they cannot afford to own a house. Government should do more to provide cheap and affordable houses for Nigerians as well as provide enabling environment for private investors to thrive. This is the reason UT Homes has embarked on a project of building affordable standard homes for middle and low income earners," Adebajo said. Adebajo further said "the project, a fully furnished gated community, is the first phase of what we are doing and it will be sold within the community. We are targeting middle and low income earners. We also have provision for mortgages for those who cannot pay once. There is assured security with good sewage system, constant water with excellent finishings. If we go by our projection, the first set of people will move in within the next nine months time. "So we urge Nigerians to take advantage of this opportunity and buy into this project because government cannot do it alone. It is our own little way of assisting the government. Many of the buildings are already sold out. This is a small development, we are going to do larger one. People can check our website or visit our office at Opebi, Ikeja or Sanusi Fafunwa, Victoria Island office for a chance in a life time to own their own homes. Lending credence to the authencity of the project, the company's Project Manager, Mr. Michael Olaiya, in company of the site Engineer, promised the Nigerian public that they are in for the best of housing revolution, and hinted that it is on first come first serve basis. It would be recalled that housing for all is one of thepolicies of the present administration, and the Housing Minister, Mr. Babatunde Fashola, has remained on top of his game, putting in more efforts to see to the realisation of the quest.
