The Department of State Security, SSS, and the Nigerian Army schemed to cover-up their atrocity after their personnel extrajudicially killed at least seven innocent men and wounded several others, residents of Apo area of Abuja, where the incident took place, said on Friday.
The security officials stormed a street located behind Zone E of the Apo Legislative Quarters in the early hours of Friday, went straight to an uncompleted building inhabited by homeless artisans and petty traders and immediately began shooting at random, killing at least seven and injuring 17 others, witnesses said.
The operatives then claimed the men were killed in a shootout with Boko Haram insurgents.
The injured, most of them shot on their backs, have since been admitted to the Asokoro General Hospital where they are being treated for gunshot wounds.
One of the injured, Ibrahim Danladi, a 20 year old satchet water seller, toldPREMIUM TIMES at the hospital that it was untrue that anyone engaged the rampaging soldiers in a shootout.

“We are no Boko Haram,” he said as he writhed in pain. “I sell pure water and none of us are Boko Haram. The soldiers just arrived suddenly and started shooting at us.”
While news of the killings and pictures of the deceased spread on social media on Friday morning, the SSS released a statement saying its officials acted based on information obtained from two Boko Haram suspects, Kamal Abdullahi and Mohammed Adamu, who it claimed had earlier been arrested for terrorist activities.
“They led the security team to the uncompleted building where arms were purported to have been buried underground,” Marilyn Ogar, the SSS spokesperson said in the statement. “No sooner had the team commenced digging for the arms than they came under heavy gunfire attack by other Boko Haram elements within the area.”
The statement said the security team responded immediately.
“As a result, some persons were injured while 12 others were arrested in connection with the incident and are making useful statements,’’ Ms. Ogar added.
But several witnesses and residents of the area have debunked the claim by the SSS. All those interviewed by PREMIUM TIMES said no one shot at the security team that stormed the building.
The team shot at unarmed residents, killing them instantly and then hung the Boko Haram tag on them, residents say.
When PREMIUM TIMES visited the area on Friday, residents said the few uncompleted houses in the street were usually occupied by homeless artisans, petty traders and commercial tricycle operators.
Unable to afford the excessively high cost of housing in Abuja, the Nigerian capital, these squatters usually gather in scores to sleep on mats in the few uncompleted buildings on the street, after returning from their daily jobs.
“The keke-napep (tricycle) men that stay in the house (where the shooting occurred) are almost 100,” Abu, a construction worker in another uncompleted building on the street, told PREMIUM TIMES. ”Apart from keke-napep, some also sell recharge cards act as phone chargers on the street.”
Witnesses told this paper that the owner of the house (or his representative) where the killings took place, believed to be a top army officer, visited on Thursday morning and ordered the squatters to vacate.
“He gave us one week, one week to leave his house,” said one survivor, who declined to be named for fear he could be arrested or targeted by soldiers. “He threatened us saying he would bring soldiers to do anything to us if we don’t leave after one week.
“But just two days later, they came to attack us,” one of the tricycle operators who used to sleep in the house cut in in Hausa. He pleaded anonymity saying he feared he could be targeted by ‘soldiers’.
Many of the residents of the building, who escaped being killed or arrested, have already fled the area.
The attack
Many of the occupants, already worried about where to live at the expiration of the one-week ultimatum, were asleep when the security officials arrived.
The SSS said in their statement that they arrived the place at about 3:00 a.m.
“They came in six Hilux vans. Many of us were asleep. They just started shooting and eventually killed seven of us,” one tricycle operator said.
He gave the names of two of his colleagues killed by the soldiers as Salisu and Abdurahman, both of whom he said were also tricycle operators.

Ishiaku, a security guard in a neighbouring occupied home, said the soldiers should be made to pay dearly for shedding the blood of innocent people.
“They were soldiers,” he said. “We just started hearing gunfire and from inside house, we could see them and their vans. The Hausa boys who sleep there never harassed anybody. How can they say they had guns?”
Alhaji, another indigent resident of the area, who is from Maiduguri and had been falsely arrested in Borno for being a Boko Haram member and later released, simply remarked at the lawlessness of the Nigerian security agencies and their penchant for killing innocents and labelling them Boko Haram insurgents.
“That is how they behave in Maiduguri. Soldiers will just go to any house or area and kill everyone there and later lie that they killed some Boko Haram people who had guns,” he said.
Soldier’s involvement
All the witnesses spoken to said the security operatives that stormed the building were mainly soldiers in uniform.
The SSS also confirmed that it did not act alone in the raid, saying it was a joint security operation.
The street where the killings took place has several mansions owned by influential people, PREMIUM TIMES found.
Residents particularly mentioned the cream-coloured house right beside the building where the killings took place as belonging to an army colonel who had in the past expressed displeasure at the huge number of indigent artisans and petty traders in the neighbourhood.
Some of them said the soldiers’ actions and involvement in Friday’s killings was probably influenced by the Colonel, a claim the Army authorities denied.
“The operation is an SSS-led operation. I don’t think it has anything to do with a military owner or no military owner,” Brigadier General Ibrahim Attahiru, the Nigerian Army spokesperson, told PREMIUM TIMES, saying the SSS statement had explained what transpired.
“It was a joint operation, the SSS led the operation. Direct all your questions to the SSS,” Mr. Attahiru added.
Efforts to get further clarification from the SSS on the incident and the claims by residents were unsuccessful.
Ms. Ogar did not respond to our telephone enquiry and a text message sent to her.
Both Mr. Attahiru and Ms Ogar declined to answer questions regarding whether any security operative was killed or injured during the operation since they claimed there was a shootout.
They also wouldn’t say whether they found any weapon in the building or its occupants since they claimed they stormed the place based on intelligence that weapons were buried there.

Police dissociates self
The Nigerian Police said seven people were killed in the operation. The SSS statement had kept mum on the number of people killed in the operation.
The police, however, clarified that it was not involved in the operations.
Altine Daniel, the spokesperson of the Abuja police, referred all enquiries on the operation to the SSS.
“Please, I don’t know; you people should contact the SSS,” she told PREMIUM TIMES.
Meanwhile, less than 12 hours after the killings, the National Human Rights Commission has already begun investigations.
Officials of the commission, led by an Assistant Director, Dahiru Bobbo, were seen interviewing witnesses and residents of the area.

I remember this one patient.. She was in labour and I had to check her cervical dilation.. Now the way that's done is by doing a digital vaginal exam and estimating the gap with the index and middle fingers in a V shape. Most of the time this is pretty routine and TBH the patient is usually too distressed by the contractions to care.. This one last however seemed to respond to my examination in a totally unexpected way.. She went from "argh ouch" to "Ooh Mhmm".. Needless to say it took me all I had to keep a straight face..

While working in the ED, a very attractive female in her mid twenties came in her boyfriend complaining of abdominal pain. Part of the work up requires a pelvic exam and bimanual exam (girl in stirrups, 2 fingers in as deep as possible to feel the cervix). I offered to have a female perform the exam but she said it was ok if I did. A chaperone was present but her boyfriend demanded to watch as well. He stood across the foot of the bed from me and started me in the eyes with a scowl the entire time my hand was deep inside his girlfriend. Made for a very uncomfortable situation for all. After the exam he pulled me aside and told me he thought she was in pain because he "bleeped her harder than ever the night before". Obviously not a doctor, but a long time nurse in the urology departement. I´d like to apologize upfront, english is not my native language, so bear with me if I don´t get the correct terminology.(i´m german). So it´s the first christmas day, and I´m on duty in our small "emergency room". He won the bet, and now had seven of those wedged around his penis, which had swollen beyond recognition. I got a little uncomfortable as it was looking really painful, called the doctor on duty and told her on the phone to brace herself for an unique experince. She arrives, and we get to work. First we drained his bladder, which was filled with more than 1 liter of urine, with a suprapubic catheter. Once this was done we tried to remove the rings..... we tried everything: we iced his penis to reduce the swelling, we tried lube, manual compression, nothing worked, the rings stayed in place. The doctor called the chief resident on duty, and he suggested to ask the dentist departement to help us. So we called the dentist, he first thought this was a prank, and went to his exam room with our patient on a stretcher.
The dentist managed to remove the rings by drilling through them under constant cooling of the patients penis, it took nearly 2 hours to accomplish. The patient fully recovered after a few days of antibiotics and cooling.
The rings are on display in a show case in a "staff only" area in our clinic, along with other things we have removed from patients bodies after "autoerotic accidents", we like to call them.

This summer at a Blue Jays game, I drank a shitton of beer. So did my buddies, and everyone else at the Rogers Centre.

After about six tall cans, I decided it was time to break the seal. I stood in line, making mumbled small talk with other drunk dudes as I pinched my pee-hole between my thighs. When I was five people from pure penile bliss, I saw that a urinal meant for young children was available—a light shone upon its glistening porcelain.

Problem was, to use it, I would have to perch myself on top of a concrete platform and pee with my legs tensed at a 90-degree angle. Regardless, I figured it was better than pissing myself, so I went for it.

Now, was this act of urinal thievery ethical? Probably not. A child could have needed to use that urinal. But my way of thinking at the time was, they weren’t drunk. Therefore, they couldn’t be experiencing the same agony I was.

To ensure you or I aren’t faced with another similar conflict, I've produced a guide to urinal etiquette; of which I hope public washroom staff will post on their filthy tiled walls. It’s worth it. Trust me.

DO’S

Opt for urinals on either end: Most public bathrooms offer a row of at least five urinals. If all are completely unoccupied, you’ve hit the motherload and have free reign. Choose whichever urinal you want—though those on opposite ends tend to offer the most privacy in case you have trouble peeing. Which can be the result of the following:

--Drinking too much can overstretch your bladder. Resulting in stalled urine.
--Drinking too much alcohol can swell your prostate, which also stalls urine.
--The most common, however, is shy bladder syndrome. Which, when peeing in a trough shoulder-to-shoulder with other men, can easily result in nervousness. (About 17 million Americans will experience some form of shy bladder during their lives. Which makes up about 7% of the population.)

Keep a buffer if possible: When one or more urinals is occupied, things get a tad more complex. If at all possible, leave a buffer between you and anyone else at a urinal. If this isn’t possible, choose to stand beside the more slender dude to maintain minimal contact. Keep your head straight, your mouth shut, and put any communications on hold until washing your hands.

If you know the person well, a quick greeting is acceptable. Any other communication with your dick in your hand may take on a whole new meaning—of which you probably aren’t intending.

Tip the bathroom attendant: Nobody on this planet enjoys the services of a bathroom attendant. We are all more than capable of washing our own hands, and now we feel forced to pay this stranger for a simple task we can do without. That being said, you kind of have to pay them—it’s likely you’ll be using the bathroom more than once that night. A dollar tip is enough to avoid any hostile run-ins with the vested gentleman throughout the remainder of your night.

DON’TS

Do not pee in a stall: This is especially important if a perfectly good urinal is available. I’ve been guilty of doing this a few times, specifically when the gents at the urinals appear particularly pervy. Peeing in stalls, though, will naturally lead others to believe you have something to hide.

If there are no urinals available and you can’t hold it in any longer, head into a stall. Remember to always close the stall door and pee standing up. Sitting down may lead others to believe you’re taking a dump, but, c’mon, men don’t sit down to pee. Ever. (This is a contentious subject at BroBible— editor.)

Do not peek: We’ve all had that moment where we’re all “is that dude staring at my junk?” In fact, pop singer, George Michael was arrested in 1998 for doing this exact thing… to a cop.

Now, some bathrooms provide screening between urinals (they should ALL have these, by the way). The best of the best public bathrooms even provide the sports section, or even TV’s at eye level to avoid such awkward interactions. These are the public bathrooms all others should aspire to be.

Do not make strange sounds: We all understand that peeing can provide fantastic relief, but lifting your head to stare at the ceiling saying “God. Yes” is a little dramatic and awkward. Also, although it's a bathroom, if you feel the need to fart, do so when your ass isn’t next to some other dude. Your butt trumpet can wait until the coast is clear.

Gunmen clad in Army uniform, it was gathered struck at about 2:30am on Friday, at the National Assembly legislative quarters in Apo, Abuja, firing several gunshots that shattered the peaceful neighbourhood.

The motive of the attack is still unknown but residents said about ten persons were shot by the assailants.

Unconfirmed reports say eight were killed, while two others were wounded.

A Nigerian woman tearfully prayed and recited Koranic verses as she won a beauty pageant exclusively for Muslim women in the Indonesian capital Wednesday, a riposte to the Miss World contest that has sparked hardline anger.
The 20 finalists, who were all required to wear headscarves, put on a glittering show for the final of Muslimah World, strolling up and down a catwalk in elaborately embroidered dresses and stilettos.
But the contestants from six countries were covered from head to foot, and as well as beauty they were judged on how well they recited Koranic verses and their views on Islam in the modern world.
After a show in front of an audience of mainly religious scholars and devout Muslims, a panel of judges picked Obabiyi Aishah Ajibola from Nigeria as the winner.
While the event in a Jakarta shopping mall paled in comparison to Miss World on the resort island of Bali, in which scores of contestants are competing, Ajibola was nevertheless overwhelmed.
Upon hearing her name, the 21-year-old knelt down and prayed, then wept as she recited a Koranic verse.
She said it was "thanks to almighty Allah" that she had won the contest. She received 25 million rupiah ($2,200) and trips to Mecca and India as prizes.
Ajibola told AFP before the final that the event "was not really about competition".
"We're just trying to show the world that Islam is beautiful," she said.
Organisers said the pageant challenged the idea of beauty put forward by the British-run Miss World pageant, and also showed that opposition to the event could be expressed non-violently.
Eka Shanti, who founded the pageant three years ago after losing her job as a TV news anchor for refusing to remove her headscarf, bills the contest as "Islam's answer to Miss World".
"This year we deliberately held our event just before the Miss World final to show that there are alternative role models for Muslim women," she told AFP.

A church round the corner from Harrods has been converted into one of London's most expensive homes and is on the market for £50million.
The 11,500sq ft house in Knightsbridge was sold 15 years ago by the Diocese of London, which needed money for urgent repairs, for just £1million after congregation numbers fell.
It was then turned into a four-storey home complete with basement swimming pool and was owned by Alain Boublil - writer of Les Miserables and Miss Saigon.
However in 2009 he sold the home for £13.5million to a Thai businessman, according to the Evening Standard.
Part of the church was retained by the diocese and continues to be used to this day for worship and community activities.
The rest of the building, though, was then upgraded again with a three-year project costing £10million to bring it to its current state.
The house is not formally for sale, but it has been 'placed' with only a handful of super-rich people who can afford it.
Neighbours told today how speculation over the next tenant has become 'the talk of the street'.
Alice Zetalofsky who lives yards from the former church, said: 'Yes we have all talked about it.
'It's become the talk of the street. Who it might be? Nobody seems to know. Guessing it will be someone incredibly rich. If it cost £50m then suppose only handful of people could afford it, couldn't they?
'It is a beautiful building, though I'm not sure if it would be a suitable home. I'm not sure I would want to live in an old church. Bit spooky wouldn't you say?'

A former Sports Editor of defunct Daily Times has hit hard times in the USA and needs assistance. This is his story as posted by his friend Azuka Jebose Molokwu.

In 1990, at the age of 31, I abandoned my job as the sports editor of Nigeria’s first evening daily paper, Evening Times, a subsidiary of THE DAILY TIMES of Nigeria. I relocated to United States to further my education and seek professional excellence with available opportunities in the world’s free press. I arrived Houston Texas, naïve and timid, with no formal training, information or survival guide kit to a migrant’s settlement in America, seeking all things bright and beautiful that “Yankee” had to offer. It’s “God’s own country”.


I settled into a shared apartment with a cousin willing to accommodate me until I integrated myself into a new lifestyle and culture. Everything functioned here. Everyday, I waited for the right opportunity to be indoctrinated into the American dream life by my cousin. While waiting for the appropriate time, I was privileged a social security number registered in my name. My cousin would come home, fill out some forms and asked me to sign them and import my social security…. I trusted everything he said and unknowingly empowered his criminal and fraudulent empire.


I married in 1992. Few minutes after my marriage, I was arrested by the FBI for alleged financial fraud, credit card and check frauds totaling $450,000 dollars. I never asked my cousin what I was signing. I willingly, though ignorantly surrendered my priced information to him. He used these against me.I began a long fight with Americas judicial system to clear my name. My identity had been stolen by a most trusted family member, used to commit a heinous financial crime. I was arrested by the Federal Bureau of Investigation. I was and I am still innocent. Between these challenges, I got married. After years of court arguments and investigations, I was exonerated. The stress had taken a deep chunk off my soul. By 1998,I was diagnosed with kidney failure. Two years later, I had stroke that paralyzed my left body … One year after my stroke, my wife left because she could not care for a husband battered by stroke. In 2003, my ex wife who left me because I had stroke, was stroked. We have a 17 year old wonderful daughter.

I moved to Maryland after my divorce to begin a new life. I carried and still wear the sad badge of a victim of Identity fraud. I am still an undocumented immigrant as a result of the identity fraud. I am an illegal terminally sick alien. I am on dialyses three days a week, thanks to a wonderful Nigerian that owns the Community Dialyses Center in Maryland. In March, doctors diagnosed me with congestive heart failure. They gave me one year to live. I have till March next year to expire.

Few days ago, I called my friend and colleague, Azuka Jebose Molokwu and hopelessly told him my conditions. I wanted to go back home. I rented a room house in Maryland. The landlord was supposed to pay the light bills from my monthly rent. He allowed the bills late and lights had been interrupted. I am too weak and broke to fight him in court. I stayed In that house for several weeks without lights. I fell four times and each time stayed on the floor for eight hours because I had no help; my phone battery died and I had no power to charge my battery. I am disabled and weak. I wanted to return home.

This afternoon, I checked into a homeless shelter. But the female administrator said I didn’t belong there, after seeing my condition. She tearfully paid for my taxicab ride back to the Motel. I will be here until Azuka helps me…I am back to Motel 6, hoping for your assistance. Azuka convinced me that returning to Nigeria may not be the best option. I have a seventeen year old daughter that is close to me. I want her to bury me. I need your help in getting an apartment or a house the next one year or until my life expires. You are my family. After all, we are God’s children”.

Explicit pictures from an Eminem concert at Slane Castle in Ireland over the weekend have kicked up a huge controversy online. In the photos two boys are shown to be engaging in separate, unrelated sex acts in the middle of the crowded field. As you might expect they quickly went viral. While the identities of the boys in question have not yet been revealed, the internet has been trying to track them down.

The photos are a distressing reminder of the state of contemporary malehood, one in which outward expressions of sexuality are encouraged and celebrated. One has to wonder where the parents of these boys are? It's disgusting that we live in a culture in which young men feel like they have to resort to such attention-seeking stunts in order to be valued by society. The hyper-sexualized music of artists like Eminem has no doubt had a distressing effect on the psychology of children too young to know that they have more to add to the world than just their joysticks.
It's a shame that these images will follow the two boys around for the rest of their lives, but then again, if they didn't want to have their picture on the internet, perhaps they shouldn't have instigated sex acts in public? Everyone, even teenagers, or, perhaps, especially teenagers, know that anything you do could end up online forever.

The 17-year-old girl has found herself at the centre of an internet storm after web users shared explicit photographs of her giving MouthAction to two men at an Eminem concert in Ireland.
Police are investigating the disturbing incident amid concerns that the images - apparently taken in a public area of the concert site and now widely circulating on the internet - amount to child pornography because she is under 18.
And dozens of internet commenters have been accused of sexism for mocking the girl and seeking to reveal her identity - while praising her sexual partner as a 'hero' and a 'legend'.
Campaigners have warned that the sharing of explicit pictures is a 'growing problem' which it is almost impossible to prevent due to the fast-moving nature of social networking.
She was also pictured kissing the same man while he sexually touched her, and giving MouthAction to a different man on the same night.
American rapper Eminem was performing to a crowd of 80,000, with police making 63 arrests during the event.

Many of the Twitter and Instagram accounts which shared the pictures of the girl have been shut down, as has a 'slut-shaming' Facebook page which made fun of the incident.
But the concert achieved web notoriety the next day when the explicit pictures were widely circulated.
Many internet users were quick to condemn her behaviour - Bridget Moynihan tweeted that the girl 'has only herself to blame, out in the open surrounded by people with camera phones. What did she expect.'
Users of web forums revealed the identity of the teenager, a secondary school student from the west of Ireland.
Others shared images mocking the girl and implying that she was overly sexually promiscuous.

Governor Okorocha, is a political opportunist. He does not have the interest of Ndigbo at heart. He has made a lot of false promises. So what? He is working his way to the top to be the first Igbo executive president in Nigeria. If he is a qualified criminal with all the credentials of shrewdness as Nigeria wants, then let him ride on. This man has changed the face of Owerri urban. He is the first governor after Mbakwe to bring development to rural areas in Imo state even though he neglects Mbaise. I must give it to him, he has done tremendously well. If Evans Enwerem, Achike Udenwa, and Ohakim did just 1/10 of what Okorocha is doing in Imo state now, our state would have progressed more.

Governor Okorocha no doubt has his flaws but I am beginning to like his audacity. Yes dear governor continue to rule and ruin us. It does not matter any more if you sold Owerri to Muslims to achieve your presidential ambitions. I am with you. Just do not relent, do not mind your detractors. Just become the president and every sin will be forgiven. One only needs to take a ride and see the roads in Imo state, the rehabilitated Concord hotel, even the federal roads in owerri that used to be death traps have been renovated. The most outstanding is the Owerri Umuahia federal road. I wish the same is true in Abia state.


How about monumental structures? I heard that there are art works in all the major roundabouts in Imo state. This governor pays stipend to students even though they have no lockers and chairs to write on, even though they have no modern classrooms at least they have stipends to buy akara. Ndigbo it is time we realize that saints do not rule in Nigeria. Our good men and women, the material saints of our time are in the monastery. Let them stay put and continue their meditations while the lions continue to roar. If Buhari could have the audacity to aspire to rule in Nigeria why not OUK and Okorocha? It is time we give support to any Igbo man/woman who wants to be president of Nigeria. Being the president of Nigeria does not have the same requirement as being an nze or ichie in our villages.

Nigeria is not ripped for good man to rule her. Only smart men can rule in Nigeria. OUK and Okorocha have displayed observable tendencies to be that smart. Let us see how we can support these men. Yes to hell with ''good'' Igbo men who would not betray us. Where were they when we needed them? There is no betrayal worse than silence in the face of injustice, and calamity.

Okorocha sir, it is not important to me which political party gives you the presidential ticket. Get it anywhere from whatever party. Let it be from ANPP, APCN, UNPGA, GNPP, NPN, or even from RIP democratic party. Go on son grab the presidential ticket and I will fly back to Nigeria, and I will campaign for you the way no Nigerian has seen. The presidency indeed covers a multitude of sin. Fire on let your enemies support you, they will be changed after victory.

Same goes with OUK. Be dogged in your struggle to win a presidential ticket. Woe will betide any Igbo man/woman that would refuse to vote you as president. I will be there for you and I will campaign for you at all cost. Do not count how many good Nigerians are with you now. Just press on. It does not matter if your supporters now are more of area boys. Keep the heat on. In Nigeria presidents have no real enemies. When you become the president we will settle everybody.

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo and some elders of the Peoples Democratic Party met with factional leaders of the party and some aggrieved governors yesterday in Abuja.
They also met with the some pro-Jonathan governors at the meeting, the meeting held at a five star hotel in Abuja.
Those at the meeting include former president Olusegun Obasanjo, former military dictator, Gen. Ibrahim Babangida (retd.); former chairmen of the party, Ahmed Ali and Sen. Barnabas Gemade respectively and chairman Board of Trustees of the party, Chief Tony Anenih. State governors present include, Gov. Aliyu Wamakko(Sokoto), Gov. Sule Lamido (Jigawa), Rotimi Amaechi (Rivers) and others.

At the end of the meeting, Obasanjo spoke with reporters, claiming that he and members of his group were trying to save the party.
At a brief press press conference, Obasanjo had these to say:
"Gentlemen of the press, I thank you for exercising patience. Let me point out, you have seen five of us as select elders of the party. We have taken it upon ourselves to prevent the worst from happening to our dear party.
Two of our members are abroad and could not join us today.
"They are Solomon Lar and Alex Ekwueme and we are carrying them along.
"Regardless of the reports your are hearing, it is suffice to say that family dispute within the PDP, which we want to stem the tide of going to the brink. And I want to say that we have met with the two side of the family, we have listened to them.

Former Head of State, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (Rtd), Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aminu Tambuwal and ten governors were among the myriad of dignitaries that graced the 8th Fidau Prayers of Pa Ademola Fashola, father of the Governor of Lagos State.
Thousands of Lagosians had thronged the Tafawa Balewa Square, TBS, venue of the Fidau Prayers to honour Pa Fashola, who died on 5 August, 2013 at the age of 80.
Most of the guests were decked in red and yellow head gears and caps while security was beefed up at the venue because of the array of dignitaries present at the occasion.

Two nights ago, I took a break from research work, decided to watch news on local television and catch up with goings-on in the polity. After the news, I was not quite enjoying an old movie flick, ‘Broken Arrow’ featuring John Travolta and Christian Slater, being shown on one of the stations and decided to flip to another station. My remote control took me to the 61st Annual Convention of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) and I was just too happy to catch up with the Convention in my living room. Anointing can be anywhere, if faith is exuded like the Centurion.

Then before sermon, General Overseer of RCCG, Pastor Adeboye made a special announcement. The church is to build a new auditorium, stretching 3km in length and width, and four times the size of the present auditorium, to accommodate many more parishioners, before next year’s convention. Everyone was naturally excited, particularly those who get to camp ground late and cannot be seated in the present auditorium. Then Pastor Adeboye shocked me with the following pronouncement:

“We need N1 Billion from ten (10) people, If you are one of them, please see my personal Secretary after we finish today. We also need N100million from those who can afford it, if you are in that category, please see my personal Secretary as well. Nonetheless, we need everyone’s involvement. If you can afford N50million, N20million, N5million, N1million to as low as N100, kindly make sure you participate. How many of you will build for the Lord?” All hands naturally went up in delirium.


I could not believe my eyes. I should not bother myself with how a church raises money to finance projects but a dangerous trend is being set and we are made to believe if we cannot ‘donate’ a certain amount of money, we cannot see Daddy G.O.’s personal Secretary. Such ‘privilege’ is for those that can donate handsomely for the work of God. Assuming a rich man in the Convention donates N1Billion effortlessly and a widow, whose next source of meal is unsure, donates her last N100; who among the two should see Pastor Adeboye’s personal Secretary? Well the answer lies in Luke 21:1-4 and Mark 12:41-44, where Jesus Christ acknowledged the poor widow who donated two copper coins (mite) over the rich donors and said “Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put more into the treasury than all the others. They all gave out of their wealth; but she, out of her poverty, put in everything—all she had to live on”.

How do we begin to justify asking members of a congregation to donate such a huge amount of money when poverty is smiling at most of the country’s citizens? The last time they were told to donate generously for the Lord towards a University project, as ordained by God, they all gladly did. The sad thing is atN510,000 per session for College of Humanities (100L & 200L), N520 for Management Science students and N550 for Natural Sciences students; Redeemer’s University is not for a Redeemer whose minimum wage is around N18,000. So they have contributed to a project, believing they are sowing for God, yet cannot send their wards/kids to such schools. Interestingly, many of the Pastors (and church leaders) running private Universities today, all enjoyed free education (absolutely free, including free lunch of Rice and Chicken – every Sunday) under Awolowo’s magnanimity. Education is now for rich members only but poor members are not exempt from donations. Hmmmm!

If the project was for research on AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, I would not bat an eyelid. If it was for national fight against Polio eradication in Nigeria like the Bill and Melinda Gates foundation in Africa, we would see the immediate benefits. If it was some sort of entrepreneurial aid to jobless youths, we would feel the impact as a nation. In spite of Bill and Melinda Gates contributions to Polio eradication, Nigeria remains the only African country (not Rwanda, not Mali, not Somalia or Sudan) where Polio is endemic and she shares this feat with Pakistan and Afghanistan. Interestingly, Pakistan reduced the number of polio cases from 198 in 2011 to 56 in 2012; Afghanistan saw a decrease from 80 to 35 during the same period, however, Nigeria increased from 62 in 2011 to 119 in 2012.

In 2013, The Gates foundation committed a fresh $1.8 Billion to the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) out of the $5.5 Billion required. Britain contributed $457 million, Canada donated $250 million while $240 million came from Norway. Even the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed al-Nahayan donated $120 million. Remarkably, these donations from foreign countries are geared towards solving the Polio scourge in 3 countries, Nigeria included. Foreigners help us to fight major health challenges while our idea of development is in gigantic buildings to be used once or twice a month for religious purposes. Our own priority in Nigeria isowning jets, breaking heads with mace, fighting for 2015 elections and building bigger auditoriums. Is it not clear why we are not developing as a country?

The message I got from the pulpit was clear, concise and profound. It does not matter where the N1 Billion comes from, provided it is donated for God’s work. Ever wonder why it is difficult for Pastors and General Overseers to condemn those who have looted our treasury? Recall when Cecelia Ibru and Erastus Akingbola had front row seats at major religious conventions in Nigeria? Did any Pastor speak against their deeds, like Nathan confronted and condemned King David in 2 Samuel 12? The subtle message is clear: “we need your money for the work of God and it does not matter how you get it”. Those who have sincerely worked hard for their wealth will only donate to worthy causes such as Aliko Dangote did when he announced a relief fund contribution of N2.5 Billion to the relief effort of flood victims in 2012.

So many churches in Nigeria have big auditoriums, yet the level of violence, ethnic hatred, treasury looting and corruption alarmingly increases in a directly proportionate way to the number of churches/mosques available. As a country, we do not need larger auditoriums but men with larger hearts (including me) with genuine love for his/her neighbour. I have been taught to obey and respect authority, more so clergy (that’s why Pastors are ‘gods’ here). I will never say Pastor Adeboye is wrong but in my honest opinion, he chose a wrong approach.

The opening quote is an expression in one of Fela’s songs. If only we can all have open minds, we may yet realise that what we need in Nigeria are religious leaders who can speak out against evil without mincing words. Excuse me please, I have to find my own N1 Billion now, so I can have pastoral access. Shalom!

Forty eight hours after sending a condolence message to Governor Babatunde Fashola of Lagos State, over the death of his father, President Goodluck Jonathan, on Wednesday, visited the Governor at the State House, Marina, to personally sympathize with him.
80 year-old Pa Ademola Fashola, died Monday after a brief illness.
On Jonathan’s entourage were former President ,Olusegun Obasanjo, the Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Mohammed Adoke, Ministers of Petroleum, Information, Sports and Chairman of National Sports Commission, NSC, Diezani Alison-Madueke, Labaran Maku, and Bolaji Abdullahi respectively as well as Senator Ben Obi, Presidential Adviser on Inter-Party Affairs.

Chief Imam of Abuja, Central Mosque, Alhaji Musa Muhammed, who was also on the team led the prayer session.
In his address, President Jonathan, while mourning the death of Pa Fashola, said “I know that this is the period that we need his presence, most especially, as a parent that will assist one in handling a number of responsibilities. That was why I told my Chief of Staff that we must pay a visit to the Governor, his wife and the entire family.
“It is a sad event for you (Fashola) to have lost your father at this point. But we must also thank God for the life that he had lived. We were indeed happy that your father though had left us at a very painful moment, he also lived a fulfilled life.
“He lived to maturity. Most especially, he had been able to replace himself tenfold before departing. You (Fashola) and your siblings are still with us. So many people didn’t have the opportunity of replacing themselves before they departing this world.”


Speaking, Fashola thanked Jonathan and his entourage for finding time to visit him.
He extolled the virtue of his late father, saying he was a great man who influenced him in so many ways.
Meanwhile, former Deputy-Governor of the state, Princess Sarah Adebisi Sosan, has also commiserated with the Governor over the death of his father.
Sosan, who was Fashola’s Deputy between 2007-2011 said “Even though he gave up at the age of 80, his demise is painful as we have lost a true, honest, steadfast, committed and highly dependable elder statesman whose contributions to the growth of modern Lagos through strong support and advice, is legendary.
“Pa Fashola, even at that age was a man no one would want to lose, especially at a time like this.
“I therefore, on behalf of myself and my family send our condolences to Governor Babtunde Raji Fashola on this great loss, while we pray that the Almighty Allah would give both the immediate and extended families and Lagosians the fortitude to bear the loss.”
She urged the Lagos helmsman “who I was privileged to work with in life to, please, take solace in the fact that Papa had lived a fulfilled life and should not allow his demise to demoralize him from delivering democratic dividends to the people of the state.”
On his part, Balogun said, “Pa Fashola was a great man who spoke the truth at all times, with fear of God as his watchword.”
Similarly, a member of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Board of Trustees, BoT, Chief Don Etiebet, in a condolence message, said: “May the soul of Pa Ademola Fashola rest in perfect peace and while we mourn the loss of the pillar of strength and the foundation of achievements and focus of His Excellency, we pray that Almighty God will give him the grace to withstand the irreparable loss with fortitude.

Q: Can you tell us the purpose of Mustapha's visit to you?
A: I got to know him many years ago when a petition was addressed to General Bamaiyi who was the then Chairman of the NDLEA. As you know, several efforts had been made by my detractors to bring me and my ministry down. One of those efforts was that petition. I was arrested for investigation and it was later discovered that it was a tissue of lies.
I spent nine days with them for investigation and they found the whole thing to be a fabrication. From there, I was taken to Aso Rock (City of Power) to see the president. It was there that I met Mustapha.
I was able to reveal to them who I am by telling them what was to come as a prophet. One of those things I mentioned to them and to Mustapha in particular, was what he went through, though he did not believe me then. That was why when it came to pass, I was the first person he remembered. I told him that he would spend several years in prison and would be finally released which no one else had ever told him.
That is why you see him coming here as his first port of call. Where there is no vision, people perish.
I am surprised you are asking me why he is coming here first. When you look into your archives as journalists, you will find many stories in the past about my visit to Aso Rock, (City of Power) while Bamaiyi was Chairman of NDLEA. Many magazines and newspapers published my visions and prophecies on the government and the presidency.
When you know your picture of tomorrow, it will impart a strength to endure your present difficulty. When you know what you are passing through now will not last long, you will endure it. This is vision; this is prophecy. This can only come by revelation. This is what the Bible means by, “Where there is no vision, the people perish” (Proverbs 29:18). I will leave you here.

Twin sisters Khadijah and Khertima Taylor were among three persons killed in a car crash on Sunday.
The 18-year-old sisters and four friends were returning home from a nightclub in San Fernando.
Police said the driver, Anthony Balkissoon, was driving his white Mazda 3 car along the San Fernando bypass road when he lost control at around 4a.m.
The car flipped several times and landed between the pillars of a concrete bridge near the Cross Crossing interchange.
The twins, of Jack Street, Marabella, died at the scene.
Kafiya Gill, 19, died at the San Fernando General Hospital. The driver, 20-year-old Balkissoon, and two others are listed in critical condition.
The Taylors were Sixth Form pupils at the St Joseph Convent, San Fernando. Gill, of Pleasantville, was University of the West Indies graduate. Relatives said she began working at the South West Regional Health Authority a month ago.
Balkissoon lives at Concord Road, located within Petrotrin's refinery compound at Pointe-a-Pierre.
Police are investigating whether speed and alcohol contributed to the crash.

The Executive Director (finance and administration) of the Infrastructure Bank, Taiwo Dauda, has said that the Lagos Rail Red Line will be completed in two years.

He announced this during a train ride from the Ebute-Metta junction of the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) in Lagos to the Agbado Station in Ogun.

The train ride was to showcase Nigeria’s infrastructure to participants at the just-concluded 3rd Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Investment Forum, which had 15 participants from Europe, the U.S., Germany, Brazil and Nigeria.

The Blue Line, which is being built by the China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC), is expected to be 27.5 km-long with 13 stations. Construction started in 2010, as against the April 2008 date originally scheduled and is only half complete (National Theatre to Mile 2).


The construction of the Blue Line has gone on very slowly.
A look at the construction of light rails in other countries shows that Nigeria is lagging behind in the construction of its rails.

The first light rail in Changchun, China started with its initial phase of Line 3, which was completed in 2001, and the second phase was completed in 2007 (6 years).

China started the construction of its first line of metro with 18 stations the length of 20.12 km in 2010, and they are to be opened in 2014.

In North America, Edmomton started its first route of light rail in 1974 and opened it on April 22, 1978 (4 years) just in time for the Common Wealth games.

Advisory service for Nigeria’s Blue and Red Rail is now being provided by CPCS Transcom Limited and Infrastructure Development. The company confirmed that construction of the Blue Rail actually started in January 2010 and the new completion date is set at 2015.

Pregnancy tests are triggered by HCG. It's found in the urine of both men and women but there has to be certain amount of it present to get a positive test. You may have seen the headline, or maybe you’re one of the 1.7 million-and-counting people who clicked on the Reddit post that started it all.
Here’s the story: A guy found his ex-GF’s pregnancy test in his medicine cabinet, took the test for laughs, and found out he was pregnant.
At least that’s what the test said. It seemed funny, so a friend of his posted a cartoon of the story on Reddit. Comments to the post noted that pregnancy tests identify hCG, a hormone produced during pregnancy — and in testicular cancer.
Sure enough, the man found he had a small tumor in one of his testicles. A follow-up post says it was a very early, curable tumor.
Does all this make sense? I asked Bruni Nazario, MD, WebMD’s resident endocrinologist.
“Yes, this is possible. Testicular cancer makes hormones and one hormone produced is hCG, the same hormone produced by embryonic tissue during pregnancy. This cancer also produces AFP, a fetal protein measured during pregnancy.”
If a man gets a positive result on a pregnancy test, does it always mean testicular cancer?
No, Nazario says. HCG is not unique to testicular cancer. Other cancers can also produce these hormones.
Many of the comments to the Reddit post are from men who now are considering giving themselves pregnancy tests. But that isn’t a good idea.
Although testicular cancer is the most common cancer in men age 15 to 34 years, it’s pretty darn rare. There are only 5.4 cases per 100,000 men each year.
On the other hand, false-positive tests are common. Widespread pregnancy testing of men would mean a lot of unnecessary worry — and a lot of unnecessary diagnostic tests and procedures, which carry their own small risks.
In fact, the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF), the expert panel that advices the U.S. on screening tests, recommends against routine testicular cancer screening.
Most testicular cancers are self-detected, or detected by a sex partner. There’s no evidence that regular self-exams or doctor exams catch these cancers any earlier. And even in advanced testicular cancer, cure rates are quite high.
Treatment of testicular cancer means removal of the affected testicle or testicles. It may include other surgery, radiation therapy, and chemotherapy.
“Regardless of disease stage, more than 90% of all newly diagnosed cases of testicular cancer will be cured,” the USPSTF notes.

CONSPIRACY THEORIES: The Woolwich Killing – More Questions Than Answers – Femi Fani-Kayode

Some things just don’t add up when it comes to the Woolwich killing. There are certainly more questions than answers. Let us examine the facts. An off-duty British soldier by the name of Lee Rigby was walking down the street in the charming and peaceful London suburb of Woolwich. All of a sudden, and out of the blue, he was randomly selected and run over by a car which was being driven by two young black men. After they hit him to the ground with the car the two young men jumped out of it, armed with machetes, knives, a rusty old pistol and a meat cleaver, and in a deep and uncontrollable frenzy amidst shouts of ”Allahu Akbar”, proceeded to take his precious life by carving him up, mutilating him, butchering him and beheading him in full public glare. This all happened barely 100 metres away from Rigby’s Army Barracks home. The attack began at 2.30 pm whilst the soldier gave up the ghost at approximately 3.00pm on a four-point inter-section roundabout and crossroads.

Immediately after finishing their gruesome act the killers then conducted their own impromptu press conference, brandishing knives and meat cleavers in blood-soaked hands, with random members of the public asking to be filmed whilst their clothes were soaked, drenched and dripping in human blood. After their ”presss conference” ended they moved to the other side of the road and calmly waited for the police to arrive. They had all the time in the world to do so but they plainly refused to run and attempt to avoid arrest or the imminent arrival of the police. According to eye witnesses (and I watched the footage on CNN) the police took no less than 30 minutes to get to the scene and confront the two killers. They did NOT get there in the 9 minutes that they are claiming.

When the police eventually arrived instead of surrendering peacefully to them or attempting to run away, the two young men charged at them brandishing their knives and meat cleaver in a menacing way and attempting to shoot their old and rusty pistol. Unfortunately for them the pistol exploded in the hand of the individual that tried to use it. They were promptly shot, wounded and disarmed. Yet before the police arrived another rather curious incident took place. A strange yet very courageous Scandinavian woman, who just happened to be sitting on a bus that was driving past, told the bus driver to stop when she saw the carnage that was being inflicted on the dying soldier, got off the bus and calmly walked over to the killers even as they were still killing him. She then proceeded to have a detailed conversation with them asking them why they were doing what they were doing and assuring them that in the end they would lose the fight because it was just them against many.

Is this not a rather curious encounter? Who really was that Scandinavian lady and who does she really work for? Is she a genuine hero or is she what, in security and intelligence circles, is known as a controller? Is she part of the system because to do what she did took immense courage? So many questions still need to be asked and answered. For example why did the police take so long before responding? Why were the killers given all the time in the world to conduct a graphic, loud and unofficial press conference in the streets with members of the public after beheading and carving up the young soldier?

Even more curiously the police and intelligence agencies have now admitted that these two young men were “known to them”. If that were the case how come they were never put under close surveillance, monitored, questioned or arrested? Why did all this have to take place at approximately 3.00pm in the afternoon, at that location (a crossroads of four junctions) and on that date? Why did the assailants have to cut off their victims head, hang around there for thirty minutes whilst ranting and whilst soaked and covered in their victims blood? Why did the killers insist that only women could come near the dying body of their victim? Why was this whole thing allowed to happen and to drag on like it did for 30 uninterrupted minutes by the authorities? Why did the police refuse to move in even though numerous members of the public were having detailed conversations with the assailants?

Was this whole thing some kind of state sponsored illuminati-style human sacrifice? Was it designed and orchestrated by the authorities to create more terror in the land and to give them the opportunity to introduce more draconian laws, curb immigration and do away with even more civil liberties on the grounds that they wish to fight the very terror that they themselves created. Are we not being fooled again by the ”powers that be” and the state just as we were over ”9-11” and over the murder of Princess Diana, both of which were clearly inside jobs with strong illuminati connections . If anyone doubts this assertion they ought to do themselves a favour and find the time to watch David Icke’s revealing documentary titled ”9/11 It Was An Inside Job”. It is on youtube. They can also find his numerous books and watch his numerous documentaries on the murder of Princess Diana. Their world view will change dramatically after that. Back to Woolwich.

Are there not clear parallels between the Woolwich incident and the Boston bombings, which took place just a few weeks ago. Are there not similarities in the profiles of the two sets of killers in both incidents. Both operations were conducted in full public glare and in the afternoon. Both operations were carried out by two Americans and two British citizens respectively each of them with a foreign heritage and family ties with nations that are rife with and that are being torn apart by Islamist terror. In the case of the Boston bombers the two perpetrators had strong links and family ties with Dagestan and Chechnya and in the case of the Woolwich incident both perpetrators had equally strong links and family ties with Nigeria. Both sets of killers were Muslim fundamentalists and both sets were ”known to the intelligence agencies” of their respective countries. Both countries in which the murders took place, i.e. Great Britain and the United States of America, are the greatest allies and leaders in the war against terror and they are both committed to standing ”shoulder to shoulder” with one another in that fight. Is it not strange that similar acts of terror will take place in the two just a few weeks apart and that people with similar profiles and virtually the same age carried out all those acts of terror? The coincidences are just too many and things just don’t add up. The performance of the British police particularly has opened up the door for a lot of speculation. They made so many mistakes. Yet I can assure you that the British police and intelligence agencies are NOT that sloppy. They are amongst the best, if not the best, in the world and they just don’t make mistakes. There is far more to this whole thing than meets the eye and there is also a sinister purpose and agenda to it. The full picture has not yet been shown to us and perhaps it never will but little by little those that are well versed in these matters will work it out and the truth will be exposed.

Yet the questions just keep coming. Is it possible that those two British boys of Nigerian descent were under some kind of ”Peter Powers” type hypnosis and mind-control system which was triggered off by something or someone. In many of his books and videos David Icke has alluded to the usage and existence of such capabilities by the more advanced intelligence agencies in the world for the last ten years and he has cited many examples of such usage. Initially I was skeptical about his assertions until I listened and read carefully and I cross checked the examples and the events that he cited. After that I was convinced that he was right and ever since then I have acknowledged the fact that we live in an exceptionally dangerous world where only the dullard would rule anything out. Back to the two young men that killed in Woolwich; were they cultivated, ”programmed” and used by agents of the illuminati in the British establishment to carry out this gruesome operation and this monstrous sacrifice? It is relevant and interesting to note that the two suspects were not just British citizens of Nigerian descent but that they were both Muslim CONVERTS. That is to say they were both brought up as Christians and then somewhere along the line they converted not just to Islam but to it’s most extreme and radical brand. They became dangerous Islamists that were prepared to kill for their faith. Who cultivated them and took them to this point and how did it get so bad? More importantly will this whole episode not give the western powers and the British people another reason to demonize Islam and target mosques and Muslim clerics? Is that part of the plan and the wider picture? Is the whole idea to create the atmosphere for vicious reprisal attacks against Muslims and Nigerians in the U.K.?

Is all that I have written here far-fetched? You may believe so but I don’t. And neither have I gone mad. The devil is real and the illuminati is is tool for world control and domination. It has been around for years and those that are part of it operate in the deepest secrecy. Yet even if you do not agree with me on anything that I have said here, the questions that I have raised are legitimate and they are indeed food for thought. In this game there are no coincidences and everything happens for a reason and has its own symbolism and purpose. As far as I am concerned only David Icke can crack this Woolwich nut and unravel its secrets and I look forward to the day that he does. Meanwhile I pray that the soul of Officer Rigby rests in perfect peace and I urge every Nigerian that is resident in or that is visiting the UK, especially if they are Muslims, to be exceptionally careful in their movements and in their dealings with the British people and authorities. There is FAR more to this whole thing than meets the eye and whether anyone likes to admit it or not, sadly, there will be some kind of backlash against our people at some point.

As for the two British men of Nigerian descent (whose names I refuse to mention) that cut short the life of this brave young and heroic British soldier in the prime of his life for doing absolutely nothing wrong, may they both die a slow and terrible death and may they rot in hell.

A sense of perfidy hits the air. So rather than cavort over the flowering of democracy, we confront the nascent hubris of a dictator. I use the word “nascent” advisedly. We have not seen tyranny in its barefaced and full form.

It is furtive and deceptively tentative, but carries the barbarous aura of the inevitable. Not long ago, the former governor of Zamfara State – no fan of mine – was picked up by the police because he said the APC would stage a peaceful protest if his party was rigged out of the 2015 polls. The Sharia-flaunting lover of nubile flesh did not offend against the law. He exercised a natural instinct of the politician in an ambience of electoral fraud.

Months later, former gun-swinging denizen of the Niger Delta forests, Mujahid Asari-Dokubo, warned that if his kinsman, Goodluck Jonathan, is not tenanted at Aso Rock in 2015, militancy will dissolve the apparent peace in the home region of the president. He merely echoed the sentiment of an officered sympathiser of the militants, Kingsley Kuku, who is special adviser to the president on amnesty. None of them, in spite of the discomfort of the National Assembly, was even called for questioning over clearly subversive threats.

The one threatened peaceful protest and was picked up. The others mouthed apocalyptic prophesies but they spoke back in defiance. Their grandfather and fuddy-duddy of Nigerian politics, rather than intervene in wisdom, played the role of an agent provocateur at over 80 years of age. He joined the delinquency and juvenile ranting and explained that others in the North had said similar things.

In this instance, the office of the inspector general of police iced over with cowardice.

Recently, Governor Rotimi Amaechi’s official aircraft was grounded at Ondo State. The aviation authorities said he had no papers, which the Rivers State Government has challenged. Not long after, the police swooped on a local government headquarters. The excuse was that the governor should not have dissolved the executive, which happened through the state legislature.

This did not only fly in the face of the principle of a federal state, but it violated the principle of the rule of law. If they don’t like what the governor did, why not go to court? It is common knowledge that the battle for Rivers State is the continuation of the friction between President Jonathan and Governor Amaechi by other means. The story, at least in public, can be traced to the open shame of rhetoric from Dame the Vain, first lady Patience Jonathan, in Rivers State during the closing days of Governor Amaechi’s first term. She openly lashed out at the governor over activities in Okrika, where she hails from. Since then, tension has crackled between Port Harcourt and Abuja. What we see today, including the fulminating shallowness of Minister of State for Education Nyesom Wike, represents a proxy war. From his reptilian redoubts in Aso Rock, he is unleashing venoms abroad.

What is going on in Rivers State, with the strong-arm hysteria from Abuja, foreshadows the rough and tumble of 2015. It is the story of a snake trying to encircle his enemies in a jungle where law and order play coy to the logic of the unbridled giant.

We also saw the introduction of a legislation to bar private aircraft owners from carrying what is perceived as passengers. To the undiscerning, it is a clever way of slowing down opponents who would hit the hustings for 2015 election when they compete with him for the meaty prize. It is a legislation for aerial supremacy through monopoly in the air battle of the 2015 campaigns. It is a metaphor of modern warfare. The law seeks to create a no-fly zone for the opposition. So while the president and his team corral the air and unleash the gunfire, the ground battle belongs to the opposition who will lie hobbled below, pinned down and ponderously weak, an army without the aerial sway. President Jonathan can now wield the nimble power of the sky with its lethal ferocity.

As a well-known top politician told me in the aftermath of the Amaechi aircraft saga, no one should take a romantic view of tackling Jonathan and his cohorts in 2015. It came close to journalism recently when two journalists with the Leadership Newspaper were held rather than taken to court. He plots to slam a state of emergency on Borno and Yobe states. By this he is trying to turn his failure to combat terrorism into an advantage for political control against 2015. Our greatest tragedy is the absence of the rule of law. It is in that sewer that tyrants breed.

These are just a few of the signs of what I called nascent tyranny. Because we live in an ostensible democracy, we take those actions for granted. Tyranny comes like a thief in the night. In the early days of Joseph Stalin, complains streamed the news media of a budding tyrant. A prominent New York Times reporter denied it. The evidence of killings, anti-Semitic slayings and concentration camps were regarded as little irritations.

The then well-known critic Edmund Wilson visited from the United States and gave Stalin the thumbs up. Even novelist and essayist Maxim Gorky came from exile and resettled in his home country and lunged at prose spirit Vladimir Nabokov for cynical error for raising a false alarm. Gorky once argued that the only people who deserve freedom are those who are ready to fight for it every day. He ignored his own religion. But he was one of the early victims of Stalin’s purge. Alexander Solzhenitsyn fell into his snare and even fought in his army, before his disillusion and exile. His Gulag Achipelago, One day in the life of Ivan Denisovich and Cancer War are three masterpieces on the Stalin era that won him the Nobel Prize.

In the early days of the Abacha regime, Ken Saro Wiwa during a BBC interview praised the coup that ushered in the tyrant. I wrote an op-ed piece then in the National Concord cautioning the novelist and playwright. I also noted that he was mistaking his cozy embrace with the general with the general apathy in the land. Saro Wiwa replied that he was cut from a rare gem. Just like Gorky, he became a tragic victim of a tyrant he helped nurture. It is one of the sore memories of my life that he visited me a day before he was arrested. A similar fate almost happened to Wole Soyinka who outgrew his chumminess with the foxy IBB and lived in exile during the Abacha era.

Asari-Dokubo said President Jonathan has performed. He should leave that to voters. He is one man, and his Ijaw nation, whose lives he has not lifted, are one people. When he swept to power in what they gleefully designated as a pan-Nigerian mandate, they should have told him that he ought to rise up to the challenge. Democracy has shown historically that it does not guarantee freedom or well being. It calls for vigilance. That was why right-wing economist – I hate to quote this guy – once asserted that “perhaps the fact that we have seen millions voting themselves into complete dependence on a tyrant has made our generation understand that to choose one’s government is not necessarily to secure freedom.” He is Friedrich Von Hayek.

Nascent tyranny thrives on a false perception of leader’s innocence. I recall the novel, Lord of the Flies by William Golding, where innocent children carry out the worst tyrannies in themselves. The only solution is vigilance, and a fighting conscience from within. That is what Ghandi referred to when he said, “The only tyrant I accept in this world is the still voice within.” This tyrant is the counterfoil to the other tyrant.
