Nigerian billionaire businessman Aliko Dangote was present at the Davido album concert which held on Sunday, July 22, 2012.

Dangote, who was sitting at the same table with Davido’s billionaire dad Deji Adeleke, looked intrigued as he watched the 19-year-old pop singer thrill the crowd with songs from his debut album ‘Omo Baba Olowo‘

Saw him in the evening and he was acting really strangely. I had been shopping in the afternoon with the girls and I did turn up a bit late so thought it might be that.
The bar was really crowded and loud so I suggested we go somewhere quieter to talk. He was still very subdued and distracted so I suggested we go somewhere nice to eat.

All through dinner he just didn't seem himself; he hardly laughed and didn't seem to be paying any attention to me or to what I was saying. I just knew that something was wrong.
He dropped me back home and I wondered if he was going to come in; he hesitated but followed.

I asked him again if there was something the matter but he just half shook his head and turned the television on.

After about 10 minutes of silence, I said I was going upstairs to bed.

I put my arms around him and told him that I loved him deeply. He just gave a sigh and a sad sort of smile. He didn't follow me up but later he did, and I was surprised when we made love.
He still seemed distant and a bit cold, and I started to think that he was going to leave me and that he had found someone else.
I cried myself to sleep.

New Nigeria’s Driver’s License now accepted in the USA

Information recently made available to 247ureports.com through principal sources within the Federal Road Safety Corps [FRSC] reveal that the new improved security features imbedded in the new driver’s license of the federal republic of Nigeria has been approved for acceptance by the State of Maryland in the United States of America [USA] as a valid driver’s license in the state of Maryland. This information was confirmed by the department of motor vehicles in the State of Maryland following a comprehensive inspection and evaluation of the new security features imported into the new driver’s license being launched by the FRSC.

Already, the new driver’ license has been accepted by other European countries including Australia. Another North American country, Canada is said to be conducting an independent evaluation of the licensing process and the new security features to determine whether to begin accepting the new license as a valid driver’s license in their country.

The new driver’s license, as gathered, was launched to streamline the pervading duplicity in identity and the ongoing fraud within the issuing agencies. Presently, the FRSC created a single data base to house the bio-data of all holders of the driver’s license in a manner to enable complete background checks on would-be drivers or applicants for driver’s license. The data base houses the biometrics including advance methods of collecting and storing fingerprints, passport snap shots, verifiable address and next of kin contact information [phone number]. This information are captured by the new system and scans the entire database of driver’s license to find matches for existing duplicates in the database system. When matching duplicates are found – an alarm is raised. The search for duplicates normally takes less than a minute to a minute to complete.

Impressively, the process for applying for driver’s license [DL] has been overturned to ensure the integrity of the DL. Previously, DL’s are issues ate the various FRSC zones in the country. There are 12 FRSC zones in Nigeria. The new process requires for the entire DL to be issued [printed] at one source – that is the headquarters in Abuja. The application for DL now starts with a visit to the website [www.NigeriaDriversLicence.org] where the applicant will be asked to fill out the appropriate form [renewal/new/re-issue]- and then chose the closest FRSC office to pick up his/her license. From the website, a print out is generated which the applicant will take to the nearest FRSC office of his/her choice. At the FRSC office, fingerprints and other pertinent bio-data are captured electronically and transmitted instantly to the head office in Abuja. The local FRSC then issues a temporary driver’s license which has a validity period of 60days. A fee of N6,000 is paid directly to the Joint Tax Board via electronic means.

The headquarter office in Abuja will instantaneously input the captured data into the main database to scan for duplicates of fingerprints or photographs. When there appears a duplicate, the application is rejected. When there appear no duplicates, the application process is continued to the next level. The license is then printed and delivered to the local FRSC office.

In addition to the streamlined process, the new security features of the license appear to have improved considerably. New features imbedded into the new license make duplication of the license virtually impossible. This is particular to the quality of the material used for the new license. The barcodes at the back of the license are said to be scan-able by the field FRSC operatives while at the various checkpoints along the streets and roads throughout the country. And as gathered, the barcodes contain the bio-data of the holder of the license.

The Chief Executive of the FRSC, Osita Chidoka, is said to have been the brainchild behind the restructuring of the Nigeria Driver’s License program through the improved security features. It is believed the new process will provide a new realistic baseline for the start of a true identification process in Nigeria – for the various security outfits in Nigeria.

247ureports.com also gathered that the Chief Executive of the FRSC will be gradually introducing the point-system for repeat offenders of laws against road safety. With the new driver’s license, it will be possible to accurately record and score each offender in the database with each offense – and when a limit is reached, the offender’s driver’s license is either suspended or revoked.

It was also gathered that the majority of the DL holders are presently not captured in the main database of the FRSC due to the manner the process had been abused by the various FRSC zones. “Most of the licenses on the streets are mere plastic cards” said a top ranking officer of the FRSC who went to say that “as time goes on, the drivers will need to renew their licenses and we will automatically capture their bio data”.

A MUST READ: Why Don Jazzy Will Lose More
All the emotions aside...
When it comes down to the cold, hard numbers – who stands to lose the most if the two partners split? I say Don Jazzy, and I have my reasons below.

1. Dbanj has Kanye (at least as far as the eyes can see)
Going by the release of today’s Oliver Twist, we are at least certain that D’banj is still in cahoots with the almighty, Kanye West. Do you really think he can lose with the mystique and power of Kanye behind him – will Kanye allow his latest African experiment fail? I doubt it seriously.



2. D’banj is the performer
People always forget that the love that fans have for performers is strong even if the performers screw up – reference everyone from Michael Jackson to Whitney Houston. Check this out -- 9ice cheated on his wife, betrayed the friend that discovered him and abandoned his producer, but do his fans love him less? Hell no. The day after the disastrous Sahara Reporters interview, did D’banj have a sold out concert in New York no matter what anyone, including YNaija said? Hell yeah! Morale? As long as he continues to give the public the ‘Koko’ it is fine – and D’banj has it.

3. Don Jazzy’s losing it
Don Jazzy’s biggest power is his mystique. Over the past three months it has steadily gone. There is that weird interview with Genevieve magazine, there’s the even weirder interview with Hip Hop World Awards,where he appeared to diss rappers and then ran to his website to give a watery apology. Then there was his limpy Jonathan repudiation and his When-I-Speak-They-Read-In-In-Aso-Rock nonsense. Then there’s the fact that he is attending too many events; and worse off, that forgettable live performance with Tiwa Savage. Don Jazzy, backing up Tiwa?! Without D’banj by his side in any of these; the superstar power from which he feeds off, Don Jazzy has only been diminished.

4. Dbanj is also an astute businessman
The big mistake we’ve made is to stereotype D’banj. We’ve always assumed he is the entertainer and Don Jazzy is the entrepreneur, but is that truly the case? No. Insiders will tell you that just the same way Don Jazzy has multitasked as Producer-and-Businessman, D’banj has also multitasked as Performer-and-Businessman. It’s a mistake people also make with Chocolate City and EME where they think MI and Banky don’t know the business. Not true. Those guys get the business – and D’banj is no pushover.

5. Was Don Jazzy really the boss?
So yes, in the public eye, every time D’banj wanted to say something, he had to first have Don Jazzy whisper into his ears, so he just had to be Don Jazzy’s boy, right? Oh please. Do you really think Don Jazzy was telling him anything that they hadn’t already discussed and rehearsed at home? It’s show-business! It’s an act! D’banj wasn’t Don Jazzy’s boy – they were business partners. Just because he held the microphone to his crutch every times he gets doesn’t make him dumb.

6. Get off the stage!
I know I have mentioned this before – but still, why is Don Jazzy diluting his brand by performing? And why was he backing up Tiwa Savage ehn? No one began to admire him because of his performance; we admired him exactly because he did not perform. He doesn’t dress well, doesn’t speak well, had a croaky voice and frankly isn’t easy on the eye. He needs to go back to the background fast. Seriously.

7. The ‘H’ word
So I always hear this funny story about how Don Jazzy is so humble. You know, because he used to give out credit on Twitter, he responds to people on Twitter and whatever else. And so, people say, this humility will serve him well as opposed to D’banj’s insufferable arrogance. Dear Lord, save us from the dangers of image-making. In fact, for those who have actually worked with the man – or tried to book him for an interview – you know this is just too funny. I’ll just move on before I say more.

8. Don Jazzy has magic fingers, we all say
But does he really? We always assume his beat is so unique that it has transformed the careers of Dr. Sid, D’Prince, Wande Coal and K-Switch. Let’s analyse this urban legend. First, D’Prince and K-Switch still have no careers – that is unless you consider hanging around Don Jazzy or D’banj a career. Wande Coal’s power is his voice not his producer. Dr. Sid has just about one or two hit songs. So, perhaps we over-estimate Don Jazzy’s prowess. Did this famous prowess transform Ikechukwu’s career? Not that I can remember. Did it make of the songs he produced for Naeto C, heavy hits? Not that I know of. Did it make Darey’s music any more hits than those produced by others? Not in the least. So what are we saying?

9. Don Jazzy is boring
Seriously, how is he going to manage to interface with the public without D’banj? Have you heard Don Jazzy speak? Have you sat down for 30 minutes with the man? At least D’banj can quickly start talking of Kokolets and Babylets and Mamalets and any lets that can let him avoid answering intelligent questions. But Don Baba J? There’s fire on the mountain oh.

10. Do you really care for Mohits without D’banj?
Take your time and think about this. Would Mo’ Hits be a compelling label with Dr. Sid, Wande Coal, K-Switch and D’Prince alone (why am I even calling K-Switch’s name in this matter?)? You know the truth is no. The magic of that team has always been D’banj. No one wants to see any yeye ‘Mo’Hits All Stars’ without D’banj. When they perform, D’banj makes the difference. D’banj is the icing on the cake. D’banj is also the flour in the cake. In fact, D’banj is the cake.

So there you have it – and please do not tell me both will succeed. Who’re ya trying to fool? Every time there is a break up, someone wins and someone loses. 2face won and Faze lost, 2face won and Blackface lost, 2face won and Kennis lost, Olu Maintain won and what-his-name lost, Tony Tetuila won, and then Eedris won, and Eddie is still losing, 9ice won and ID lost (we love Toni Payne, so we’ll leave her out of this). I can go on and on. Someone will get the short-end of the stick in this case. And my money, sadly, is on Don Jazzy.

But I’d be glad to be proven wrong. Oh so glad.

In the meantime, biko, Don Jazzy and D’banj; if you are breaking up, just break up already – which one is all this drama?

Breaking: Plane crash-lands in Benin
July 5, 2012

Travellers at the Benin Airport panicked on Thursday when an air force plane crash-landed on the runway.

Sources confirmed that none of the two pilots onboard the aircraft, with registration number 5N-BKS, were injured in the incident.

“The plane landed on the runway with its tyres locked in, an indication that the tyres did not shoot out,” said a source at the airport. “But only the pilot can really explain what happened.”

An airport rescue team led Air Maritime Operations responded promptly with the emergency team.

The incident caused delays in flight operations for some hours.

The airport manager, Segun Ayodele, who confirmed the incident, however said he was not at the airport when it occurred.

The plane has been evacuated to Okada aircraft hangar along airport road.

Estranged wife of Chris Okotie, Stephanie, tells the story of their collapsed marriage in soulful posts on her Facebook page,

For the first time since June 24 when the pastor of the Lagos-based Household of God, Rev. Chris Okotie, announced his separation from his spouse of four years, Stephanie Henshaw, the latter has taken to Facebook to tell her story.

Writing on her Facebook account (Stephanie Adie Henshaw), which appeared to have been opened a few days after the separation, she indicated that the separation was not her initiative.

The initial information posted on Sunday read, “Today makes it three weeks I was asked for a separation and a week and four days I packed out. Romans 8:28: ‘All things work together for good for those who love God and are called according to His purpose for them. I am as shocked as most people are, as there has not been an argument in my home. In over a year we have been as happy as everybody thought we were. I wait because I know in time God will make known what has gone wrong.”

In other postings, Henshaw, who has reverted to her maiden name, disclosed that she had known her ex husband for almost two decades.

“Twenty years I have known a man, 15 years we have been the closest friends. I prepared all his meals for 10 years, including the four years we were married. The day I was asked to leave I prepared his meal, served it and I left. For the four years he never fell ill but today I am called all sorts of names -’ ‘witch’, and ‘mermaid spirit.’ I have served Jesus with clean hands and a clean heart. I have loved all that have come my way and if I do not live through this pain and hurt as sure as Jesus lives my children will see my vindication.”

Speaking through various other posts, an obviously aggrieved Henshaw, also gave hints that she was implicated and falsely accused by ‘certain church members’.

“Lies, not from the world but the church; accusations not from the world, but the church. Where are the spirit filled Christians, the ones who fear and hear the Lord. My husband loves and adores me; he is not the one saying these things, the enemies from within who hate me. They hate the grace God showed me. They hate the mercy God has had on me. So, they come up with all kinds of lies. My going can bring one Mrs. Okotie, but what happens to the rest of you? You bring shame to the body of Christ out of your jealousy and selfish desire and in the process expose your pastor. The work he has to do cost Jesus his life, don’t joke with it. Our friendship is not based on marriage. You manipulate things at the expense of God’s work and name. It is not about me. It has never been: it is about the will of God.’’

In another post, Henshaw, who hails from Cross River State, prays for a vindication.

She cries, “Have mercy on me, O God, have mercy! I look to you for protection. I will hide beneath the shadow of your wing until the danger passes by. Vindicate me, Lord. All things are open before you, righteous judge. I remain still, speak on my behalf. I submitted to the end. I did all I was asked to do, Lord. I left that home blameless before you. I have loved but have not been loved. I have given and not received; but that is contrary to your word, Lord. So, today I ask your word be made manifest in my life.

Mr Abdul-Lateef Kolawole Abiola, eldest son of the late Bashorun M.K.O Abiola (no further introduction needed), will be 50 this coming Sunday. But there is not going to be any celebration. By his plan, after observing Umrah (Lesser Hajj) in Saudi Arabia, he is going on an expedition to Mount Everest, having already conquered Mount Kilimanjaro.

That is the way he celebrates his birthday.
On Tuesday, I was with Egbon Kola (as I have been calling him right from my days as a staff in his father's Concord Press in the 90s) at the invitation of Chief Dele Momodu (Bob Dee) to conduct what has become a once-a-decade ritual. In 2002 when he was to celebrate his 40th birthday, Bob Dee invited me and Dr Reuben Abati to join him in interviewing Kola Abiola for OVATION.

Ten years later on Tuesday, Bob Dee and I were joined by Messrs Femi Adesina (The Sun), Felix Abugu (The Guardian), Mobolaji Sanusi (The Nation), Jide Ajani (Vanguard) and the editor of Ovation, Mike Effiong. 
I was allowed to fire the opening shot and I started by reminding Kola of a remark he made on July 7, 1998 when his father died in military confinement in Abuja: "They said June 12 or nothing. Now they have nothing!".

What really did he mean? With a mirth-less smile on his face, Kola said "yeah, I remember saying that but unfortunately, nothing has changed since then. June 12 has been exploited for all manner of reasons by all manner of people who have used it to advance their own political career." Without pulling punches, he went into a long disquisition of what June 12 meant and the opportunism as well as the contradictions that have materialized around it over the last 19 years.
Quite naturally, the question dovetailed into the controversial renaming of UNILAG after his late father and he didn't disguise his displeasure with the Jonathan Administration.

He in fact described the decision as one of those exploitations of June 12 he had earlier alluded to. He said: "we had a government that asked itself after one year in office, 'what have we achieved?' and with no coherent answer just said, 'let's rename UNILAG after Abiola to show we have done something'.

The family was not consulted. The authorities of the University of Lagos were not consulted. The National Assembly was not consulted. I am not even sure the Federal Executive Council was consulted. And then, someone was trying to reduce Abiola to a regional figure."
Without sounding bitter but obviously angry, Kola gave his views (very strong ones) on the renaming of UNILAG as well as on what he considers the hypocrisy of, and gratuitous insult from, some people who question his late father's contribution to education in Nigeria

. But for him nothing pains more than how the nation's ethno-religious fault-lines are now being exploited to sow discord and division within the country. Recalling his own experience as a Youth Corps member in Zaria, he located the problem within a certain generation of Nigerians who, having mortgaged the nation's past now wants to circumscribe the future. 
No doubt Kola has seen a lot in his 50 years and he was passionate about several issues, including a new NGO on “Tribe Nigeria” which he is working on.

He spoke about the whole June 12 experience and what he learnt. He dissected leadership in Nigeria at all levels, the current political parties and we also engaged him on personal issues. He was particularly emotional (holding back tears) as he told a moving story of his relationship with his late daughter, Labake, who introduced him to mountain climbing and in whose honour he has decided to mark his birthday every year by going on such expedition. He also spoke on divisions within the Abiola family and the ongoing efforts to mend the cracks. He responded to issues about the controversial DNA for his late father's children as well as his view on polygamy (his father's and his own).

And trust my brother, Femi Adesina, Kola also had to account for why he could be reportedly romancing General Ibrahim Babangida's daughter at a time some other people were being killed and "standing on June 12" in 1993. With wisecracks, anecdotes and proverbs, Kola left no one in doubt that he is indeed a chip off the old block. Sample: Asked for his take on the denial of House of Representatives ticket to his half-brother, Lekan Abiola by the Ogun State ACN which instead fielded Olumide Osoba, (son of Chief Segun Osoba), Kola responded: "Whatever disagreement I may have with Osoba, omo eni ko ni se idi bebere, ka gbe ileke s'idi omo elomiran". That Yoruba wise saying crudely interpreted means Osoba could not have left his own son to back another man's.

(Hmmm.)
For almost two and a half hours, it was an engaging session and so enthralled was Abugu (encountering Kola for the first time) that he wanted to know why a man who held such strong political views and could articulate himself so brilliantly would stay out of limelight and Kola responded by attributing his style to the grooming of his late mother, Simbiat Atinuke Abiola. "My mother moulded us and she was a very powerful woman but most people didn't know her strength. You only needed to get my mother to support a cause because while others would be making noise, she would be working in the background and she would achieve result.

She was very effective."
 But as candid as Kola was, one question flustered him: "What was the problem between your father and Obasanjo?" For almost a minute, he didn't know how to respond; then he went into the complicated but interwoven history of the duo before he added, "whatever the issue was between my father and Obasanjo, my father is dead now but I hope Obasanjo can put a closure on it before he dies.

My father sought to be president and he didn't make it but Obasanjo has led this country twice. The last time he was elected to assuage the South West for the injustice done to my father. But as I said, whatever the issue was between him and my father, I wish we can put a closure on it before he (Obasanjo) dies."

Embattled lawmaker, Hon. Farouk Lawan, has taken his case to God. Lawan is being investigated by the police Special Task Force (STF) for his alleged role in the $3 million bribe deal over fuel subsidy probe report.

He was Chairman of the House of Representatives Ad-hoc Committee on Fuel Subsidy Payments. Lawan allegedly approached Chief Femi Otedola, Chairman of Zenon Oil to part with $3 million to enable the committee delete his company’s name from the panel’s report. But Otedola insisted that Zenon Oil did not commit any crime because as an outfit that deals in diesel, it could not have enjoyed anything from the Petroleum Subsidy Fund (PSF). The oil magnate said he succumbed to alleged pressure from Lawan to release the $620,000 part-payment in a “string operation” co-ordinated by the security agencies.

The audio and video evidence of the event submitted to the police by Otedola led to Lawan’s arrest, detention and release on bail last Saturday. He was suspended as Chairman of the Ad hoc committee as well as the Education panel. But yesterday, Lawan said that his travail was sanctioned by God and that at the end of the investigation, he would be vindicated by God. Police have so far recovered $10,000 of the bribe money while he is expected to produce the balance before the end of the week.

Appearing at the plenary session for the first time since his bribery allegation began two weeks ago, Lawan declared that God decided to allow him go through the current trial for some reasons. He did not state the reasons. The lawmaker, who was visibly shaken, told newsmen who besieged him at the end of the plenary session that he had no problem with the decision of the House to shove him aside as the Chairman of Education Committee and that of the ad hoc panel. According to him, the decision was taken to preserve the image and integrity of the House which he said is bigger that members.

“He said: “I think it is important to note that I have been a member of the House of Representatives for the past 13 years. Of course, together with several other colleagues of mine past and present and we have done so much to build the House of Representatives. It means to show that I should enjoy the respect and confidence of Nigerians.

Sounding spiritual and looking vaguely into the air, he said: “I just urge Nigerians to continue to be patient, I have not spoken on the issue for strategic reasons, but I believe in the end, Nigerians will come to believe and see that for the 13 years that I have invested in championing good governance , responsibility and probity in this country that this last trial is a trial from God and I believe in the end we shall prevai”, he said. Meanwhile, the STF may have to depend on the video recording of how the lawmaker allegedly collected the bribe money to prosecute Lawan.

Daily Sun gathered that this was necessary following the inability of the embattled chairman to produce the money as he had agreed to as one of the bail conditions that led to his release from police custody. Lawan, who reported to the Force Headquarters yesterday as promised, again failed to produce the bribe money he collected from Otedola. The lawmaker, who had promised to return a mere $5,000, from the $520,000, he collected from Otedola, the last time he visited the police headquarters, was said to have failed to fulfill his promise as he again came empty-handed.

A police source who would not want his name mentioned, said investigation has shown that Lawan did not act alone in the bribery scam, but, he is unwilling to reveal the names of his other accomplices in the act. He assured that Nigerians would soon get to know all those involved in the scandal in a matter of time.

Meanwhile, the police have invited all the members of the fuel subsidy probe committee to appear before it today to explain their roles in the loot.

Fellow Citizens, at sunset yesterday, I authorized our armed forces to begin full deployment to the seven Northern states namely, Sokoto, Kano, Kaduna, Yobe, Bauchi, Borno and Kebbi. Along with Plateau state, I have declared an indefinite state of emergency.

This action becomes necessary in the face of the series of terrorists acts that have targeted Christians in those parts of the country. I have also directed the Inspector General of Police to put in place appropriate security measures to secure the churches and government buildings as well as other possible targets. As we seek to improve on our responsibility to the families of those affected by these terrorists acts, these security directives will remain in place as long as it's constitutionally necessary to maintain peace and security in the country. I have also directed the newly established SSDF (State security and Defence Force) to begin the mass arrest of all suspected sponsors and members of Boko Haram; this will complement all the efforts we have made in the past. In this difficult time for the Federal Republic, it is perhaps well to ask what kind of a nation we are and what direction we want to move in. For those of you who have been affected by these crisis and killings, considering the evidence that there were muslims who were responsible- you can be filled with bitterness, with hatred, and a desire for revenge. We can move in that direction as a country, in great polarization, as we witnessed in Kaduna and Kano on sunday, muslims amongst Muslims, Christians amongst Christians, filled with hatred toward one another. Or we can make an effort, to understand and to comprehend, and to replace that violence, that stain of bloodshed that has spread across our land, with an effort to understand with compassion and love for a country that has brought us together as One. For those of you who are Christians and are tempted to be filled with desire for vengance and distrust at the injustice of such an act, against all Muslim people, I can only say that I feel in my own heart the same kind of feeling- seeing citizens who have placed their hope and trust in me mauled and maimed and shattered to death. But we have to make an effort in this country, we have to make an effort to understand, to go beyond these rather difficult times, and to understand that Nigeria is far from perfect. What we need in our beloved country Nigeria is not division; what we need in Nigeria is not hatred; what we need in Nigeria is not violence or lawlessness; what we need is the words contained in "Our Pledge" to Nigeria and that overriding responsibility toward the good of one another, and a feeling of justice toward those who still suffer within our country, whether they are Christians or they are Muslims. As Christians, it is perhaps important that we should try to understand that in the Islamic tradition, there is a similar mixture of values restraining war along with others promoting it and yet, this is not peculiar to Islam. As your President, I have also received the wonderful tutorship of the Islamic religion. The Qur'an repeatedly refers to God as compassionate and just. It also says that "there is no compulsion in religion" (2:256): submission to God must be freely chosen, not forced. The Qur'an urges Muslims to use "beautiful preaching" to persuade people to accept Islam and to "argue nicely" with Jews and Christians who are seen as worshipping the same God as their own. This is probably the attitude of most Muslim people in Nigeria today. Historically, Christian communities have often been tolerated and protected under Muslim rule. The word jihad, by the way, means struggle or effort. Jihad can refer to the struggle of the individual Muslim to conform his or her will to Allah's, or to a peaceful effort to persuade others to accept Islam. But jihad can also mean holy war. In fact, there's a sense in which the only completely just war in Islamic terms is a holy war since it has to be approved by proper religious authorities and waged to defend or promote Islam or the Muslim community. There is no known religious authority in Nigeria that has permitted the deadly killings by Boko Haram; if our security operatives find anything contrary, the law enforcement will pursue the death penalty. Again, history allows us to see that Islam spread to some parts of the world like Indonesia mainly by means of "beautiful preaching," much of its expansion elsewhere, though was through war, did observe the important moral rules for fighting holy wars: women, children and the elderly were not to be directly attacked. Jihad was not supposed to be total war involving indiscriminate killing-so Boko Haram has not the interest of Islam at heart. Of course, Muslims are probably as prone as Christians to seeing in their holy scriptures only what they want to see, ignoring other passages that contradict their preconceived beliefs. Someone inferring a mandate to wage indiscriminate, offensive war from Qur'an 9:5, "Kill the idolaters wherever you find them," could only do so by ignoring the particular historical context of that passage, verses elsewhere that urge defensive and limited uses of force only, such as Qur'an 2:190, "Fight in the path of God those who fight you, but do not transgress limits, for God does not love transgressors," and numerous other verses praising patience in adversity and nonviolent preaching. Whatever the case, as your president, it will not be under my watch that any religious sect will seek to terrorize fellow citizens. I will not hesitate for one second, to use maximum force to bring every Boko Haram Criminal to justice and to kill them wherever we find them. We shall also target their sponsors and make life unbearable for them. No one, no matter how highly placed, who puts the life of a fellow citizen at risk can feel safe in this country under my watch. My administration will remain focused, and committed to our manifesto. We shall not waver, we shall not give up until the security of every life and property is assured. I urge you to return back to your responsibilities as law abiding citizens and to help the New Police force with any information that you may deem necessary for your security and the safety of others. SURPRISINGLY, Chief Coach, Stephen Keshi has supported the proposed transfer of Nigeria international, Yakubu Aiyegbeni to China.

The Blackburn of England striker who netted 18 goals in 30 matches last season maybe unveiled today by newly promoted Super League Chinese outfit, Guanghzou R&FC though subject to him passing a medical.

Guanghzou are expected to part with a minimum of five million pounds (about N1.6bn) for the former Portsmouth player who was also on the wish list of Reading, Southampton, Galatassary and Eskisehirspor.

But speaking on Tuesday evening from Abuja, Keshi said those condemning the move should have a rethink.

With age no longer on his side, Keshi said the player may have considered his future after he would have retired from the game.

“If the report is really true then he should please go. Are we talking about the league? Look, that is not an issue here. Let us forget that he played in the premiership and that the Chinese league is miles behind the EPL. It is about money and we are talking about N1.2bn here. Please allow him to go,” said Keshi.

“If he was in his 20s then we can say he should not go. But at this stage of his career, he would not be thinking of playing in the Champions league but how he would make money for his family after retiring from the game,” Keshi explained.

The coach further hinted that the player remains in his plans.

Apparently aware of surreptitious moves to rope him in the $3m bribery scam ravaging the House of Representatives’ ad hoc committee on fuel subsidy regime, the Speaker, Hon. Aminu Tambuwal, may have decided to distance himself from the $620, 000 bribe money.

His decision to stay clear of the issue comes in the aftermath of a letter written to him by the Acting Inspector- General of Police, Mohammed Abubakar, requesting the House leadership to facilitate the retrieval of the marked dollars from the suspended lawmaker and chairman of the probe committee, Farouk Lawan.

In the letter, which was reportedly delivered personally by the head of Police Special Task Force, the Commissioner of Police, Mr. Ali Ahmadu, the IG was said to have requested that the money be handed over today.

However, National Mirror sources disclosed that the Speaker was amazed at the insistence of the police that he should facilitate the release of the money from Lawan.

The Speaker was said to have asked the police to treat the matter professionally and deal directly with Lawan rather than involving the entire House.

“The Speaker can smell a rat. If not, why are they asking him to get the money for them when they (police) have all the wherewithal to make Lawan produce the money? Obviously, that should not be the responsibility of the Speaker.

“In fact, he has asked them to deal with Lawan as an individual and that it is not his responsibility to help in retrieving the dollars,” said the source.

This is not the first time that Tambuwal would shun such request.

He had reportedly rebuffed earlier entreaties from the State Security Service, SSS, to help with the same task.

Before Lawan was detained last week, the Speaker had been invited by the SSS to watch the video of the $3m bribery scandal after which he was requested to retrieve the money from the embattled lawmaker.

National Mirror also learnt yesterday that the lawmaker’s problem has been compounded by the refusal of his fellow lawmakers from Kano State to support him.

When the ad hoc committee was inaugurated in February, the Kano State caucus in the House was said to have met with Lawan, advising him to tread with caution since the assignment was a very sensitive one.

The caucus was said to have pleaded with him not to bungle the assignment by way of bending to partisan party considerations. “That explains why he started on a very right footing and why frontline lawyers like Femi Falana and Olisa Agbakoba decided to support the committee’s work and even make presentations before it,” said a source.

The source added that a member of the caucus had at the weekend raised the possibility of meeting with the IG to secure bail for Lawan but that majority of the caucus members were vehemently opposed to such a move, arguing that the lawmaker must be left to prove his innocence or face the law.

Indications also emerged yesterday that some sympathisers of three former speakers of the House have resolved to ensure that the lawmaker pays for his “sins”.

According to a former member of the House, who would not want his name mentioned, Lawan was instrumental to the impeachment or created problems for former speakers Salisu Buhari, Aminu Masari and Patricia Etteh.

“This is nemesis catching up with him. The man (Lawan) has done a lot in that place. He has been there since the advent of democracy in 1999 and he has often been part of the various scheming in the House. For instance, he cannot swear not to have been privy to the disgraceful exit of some of the past leaders of the House.

“You will recall his role during the ‘Etteh-must-go’ saga. I think this is nemesis. If not, why is it that virtually all his friends and even committee members seem to have abandoned him,” the source queried.

Lawan is slated to appear before the police today in continuation of interrogation into the incident.

Although one of the conditions reportedly attached to his bail is that he would hand the money over to the police today or to Speaker Tambuwal for onward delivery to the police, it is yet unclear if he will submit the money as demanded.

Meanwhile, the House yesterday said the report of the Ad hoc Committee on fuel subsidy is sacrosanct despite the bribery scandal involving the former Chairman of the committee, Lawan.

The Deputy Leader of the House, Hon. Leo Ogor, made this known in an interview with one of our correspondent.

Ogor, who represents Isoko Federal Constituency of Delta State, said the controversial report is revered and sacred. He said the leadership of the House would strive to ensure a thorough investigation of the probe report and bring those indicted to book.

He said: “The report of the ad hoc committee on subsidy regime is a product of the House and the House will defend it. The committee of the whole House approved the report and that makes the report our property.

“The House at any given time will definitely defend the report. We are urging Nigerians to look at the message and not the messengers. There is a great message in the report, which Nigerians should be proud of.

“The House should be separated from individuals. We should separate our institutions rather than individualising our institutions. There are levels of challenges associating with individualising institutions. The House has an in-built mechanism to regulate and expose itself. We are not ready to compromise anything.

“The agenda of the House is accountability and due process, which is our focus. The House is beginning the review of Nigeria as a nation. We may have one or two challenges but the leadership is operating within specific mandate. The system is prepared to eliminate sharp practices within the system and bring the perpetrators to account for the sins,” he added.

Ogor insisted that Lawan is on his own in the controversy surrounding the probe of the subsidy report.

It will be recalled that Lawan had on Monday admitted that he collected $500,000 from the Chairman of Zenon Oil and Gas, Mr. Femi Otedola, before the final report on the fuel subsidy probe was submitted to the full House.

While the rage persists with all its partisan effluvia over Honourable Farouk Lawan’s lack of grace and integrity in the Otedola bribe saga, we should not forget that this whole drama has exposed again the soft and seedy underbelly of our political system.

On the surface, it is about one man’s greed and another man’s revenge. But at bottom, it is about a political class unwilling to tackle the fundamental woes of a nation. The fuel subsidy report issued by the Lawan committee of the House of Representatives was beloved by one group and hated by another. The way one group wants to sully the other group is to bring the opponent’s bribery folly into the tale.

Let us catch Lawan as a thief, and then the report of our own corruption will be forgotten. But what the story tells us is that one corrupt group wants to wield the sword of corruption to torpedo the enemy. So, as the tale goes on, we are not focused now on what really happened that N2.1 trillion was spent on fuel subsidy but whether or not one man accepted the bribe of N96 million. Even if it was N10, it is no less an act of folly. It is the absurd way of Nigeria.

It is not that Otedola is angry that Lawan could take the money, but that Lawan should want to head off a team to expose the rottenness of his business and political group. But we all know that Lawan, with his deceptively puny build, tortoise eyes and ambitious pedigree, was eyeing the top post in his home state of Kano. Now, all that bites the dust. And the man, who once led hunting squads to finish off other titans of the House like the inelegant Olubunmi Etteh and Salisu Buhari of the vaulting ambition, has become the hunted. His fall has been a sort of modern-day humpty dumpty, careening down. All his fellow members looked him in the eye, some with wistful disdain, others with impotent pity, and others still with a ironic sense of pecuniary betrayal, the last wondering gratefully why they were not enlisted in this tragic narrative.

That was Lawan of the righteous boasts; the Lawan of “my report is indestructible”, the “leave me alone” Lawan and “let me do my work”. “All you Jonathan friends stay off” Lawan. It is a story of a good report from a questionable reporter, or a good message from a cheeky messenger.

But let us not forget the message. Let us not let partisans obviate the essential truth of the matter: that an industry has robbed us of our daily bread. The real refrain should be “give us this day our daily oil.” The oil flows out of our ken while an oligarchy of depraved men and a few women drink to our fatal ill-health.

Noted is the fact that it is not so much Lawan that Otedola and his group are after. It is the fall of the House of Representatives. The Presidency craves the fall of Speaker Aminu Tambuwal, whose effortless grace and determined independence have irked a section of the political class and the Presidency.

That is why I look at this crisis as a crisis of politics more than of integrity. Or, if you like, the crisis of political integrity. It is this sort of crisis that explains why we have not yet solved the lingering inferno of Boko Haram and the subliminal ache of the national question.

This is the time to build bridges and play low the ululations of divisions. A cancer is eating the nation deep, and this is not the time to let the lower moral of personal and partisan triumphs dwarf the exigencies of development. If the Presidency had built its bridges with the House of Representatives in the aftermath of Tambuwal’s election victory, perhaps we would not have these distractions. Tambuwal is turning out to be the best in this Republic in holding together the House, and that is a great gift of leadership. Unlike the Senate with its tepid demeanour, the House is feisty and can easily run into turbulent straits. Tambuwal holds his own commendably.

Building bridges is the greatest asset in times of distress like today’s Nigeria. Look at the power of rage and division along ethnic lines today. We sometimes wonder whether the nation is one, whether we want to work as one.

But we do, even if we don’t admit it to ourselves. We cannot wish away a Nigeria without profound consequences and we are not ready for the gory after-effects. Only that such efforts of cooperation are not taken as seriously. But good instances exist to cheer us. In Jos, residents still talk of the good old days of harmony. Today we have such examples. Look, for instance, at the effort of the Lagos State government to integrate other ethnic groups, both in terms of the players in its local politics and its appointments. But that is better known than what Governor Babangida Aliyu has done in Niger State. Given a history of alienation, he decided that other ethnic groups would be absorbed into the state. Hence, he abolished the contract appointments to non-indigenes that preceded him. I recalled when I was a Youth Corps member in one of the states in the North and many of my fellow corps members were turned off from staying behind because of that policy. How can you claim to belong when you cannot rise beyond a certain position? Any sense of belonging is instantly annulled.

The chief servant also has ensured that the policy came to fruition when he employed about 10,000 persons and 30 percent was allotted to non-indigenes. He has also paid NECO fees for students without ethnic discrimination. He has not done this bridge building along ethnic lines alone. In a predominantly Islamic State, he has built church and also a mosque. He has for the first time appointed several Christians as commissioners and special advisers and assistants.

He has an inter-ethnic committee to gauge and strengthen bonds. That is the spirit we should seek. In Borno State, the articulate and brilliant Governor Kashim Shetima has also appointed a southerner into his team.

So we should not look at the Lawan story as the perversity of a naïve lawmaker, but another tale of the unfolding alienation in our society. One story after another tells of the divide. Partisanship is integral to politics, even democracy, but we should abhor the sort that drags the nation down rather than engage our nobler spirits.

This is what the Presidency should embrace and not preside over a whirlpool of centrifugal dramatists.

"My name is 'anonymous' I wont mention where I come from for security reasons. I met this guy in 2001 when I was writing WAEC, his name is GuyA. We fell in love.

"He was everything a woman would ask for; he is fair, handsome, intelligent and God fearing, he loved me so much, he shared the little he had with me, he was willing to do anything I ask for though he didn't have much because he was still in second year at university of Nigeria, Enugu campus.

"He did everything possible for me to gain admission into the university. I eventually gained admission in 2003 at Enugu State University of Science and Technology and graduated in 2007.

"I don't know what came over me. I had a fling with this guy named GuyB. Though I never loved him, but I became pregnant for him. I didn't know what to do, but terminating the pregnancy was not an option. I didn't want to lose GuyA. It was as if my world has crumbled.

"I didn't tell anybody not even my best friend because I never could tell what would happen if I did. I made a smart move by telling GuyA that I was pregnant for him.

"Of course, he believed me because he trusted me so much but I betrayed his love for me. He came to see my people, though my parents are dead.

"I eventually put to bed; a baby girl. This was in 2008. Do you know what my baby was exactly the carbon copy of GuyB; the guy I had a fling with?

"I was not surprise because I knew the pregnancy wasn't GuyA's but I thought the baby would've resembled me. Of course, I was wrong. GuyA accepted us even when he knew the baby does not look like him or me.

"Ever since, I have been dying in silence. My conscience kept killing me. At a point, I hated my own child seeing a picture of another man in her. My husband, GuyA loved her so much more than anything.

"In 2010, I had another baby boy for my husband. My joy knew no bounds. I was really happy, my husband was happy as well.

"In 2012, I had another baby boy for my husband, GuyA. Even at that, he loved my daughter more than her two biological sons. At a point, I became jealous but what can I do. I just couldn't bear it any more so I decided to give my life to Christ and beg God for forgiveness which I know he has done.

"This I did because I couldn't continue to die in silence. It was now for me to confess to my husband but how would I achieve that without breaking my home? I didn't want to loose my home, I loved my husband and my kids.

"He is a wonderful man but I betrayed him. I prayed and asked God to give me the strength to confess to him... On the set day, I first called him on phone to ask him if he would ever forgive me. He asked what I meant by that. He asked if I was alright and I said yes. He hanged up on me. I cried like a baby.

"When he came back from work that same day, I served him his dinner. After that, I went with him in the room and told him to forgive me that he should not punish our daughter for what she does not know about but punish me.

"He asked again what I meant by that. I narrated everything that transpired between GuyB and I. To my greatest surprise, he dropped a bombshell. He said he knew all these years that he was not the biological father of our 4-year old daughter.

"I asked him if he knew about it and didn't bother to ask me? He said that he knew that someday I was going to tell him but he never knew it would come this soon.

"It was as if the ground should open and swallow me. I was so ashamed of my self that I bowed my face in tears but he cuddled me and said he'd forgiven me long ago. He said that we pray every day OUR FATHER FORGIVE US OUR SINS AS WE FORGIVE THOSE TRESPASS AGAINST US, why won't he forgive me?

"He said no one is perfect and that we make mistakes in life. He said that I was a nice person and that we have been through a lot in life. So, he cannot abandon me now that i needed him most. He told me that he could possibly throw me out so that people will laugh at me but he has always loved me.

"As for my daughter, as far as he is concerned, she is his daughter. He's has always seen her as one and that he will always love us. These were his words.

"I was short of words, all I could do was to cry and thank him and thank God for the kind of man he has given me because I know that no man would take that from any woman no matter what except by the special grace of God.

2015: ACN/CPC merger leaders reach out to IBB, Atiku •APGA splits


THE merger plan among opposition political parties has taken a new dimension with reports that leaders of the opposition are already taking their case to some leading members of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party.

Reliable findings within the opposition movement showed that nocturnal contacts have been made with the political camp of former military president, Ibrahim Babangida who had announced his retirement from partisan politics.

Also reportedly contacted was the political camp of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar whom the opposition leaders allegedly believed has been plotted against going by the recent election of Alhaji Bamanga Tukur as the national chairman of the ruling party.

While it was not clear whether Atiku Abubakar has been directly approached, Sunday Tribune was told that some opposition leaders had for some time been working on resolving the personality clash between Asiwaju Bola Tinubu and Atiku Abubakar as a prelude for getting the former vice president into the coalition.

The former vice president was however said to be uninterested in joining any anti-PDP coalition even as it was learnt that a level of success was recorded in the reconciliation efforts.

Insiders within the camp of the former vice president said the Adamawa politician was still hopeful of making headway within the PDP even as many of his key allies are said to be warning against Turaki`s laying his hope on the PDP in 2015.

“There is a division within the house. Many want Turaki to abandon the ship and join the grand coalition. Others urged him to retain his trust and support for president Goodluck Jonathan,” a close confidant of the politician said.

Further investigations however revealed that the former number two citizen still believed that the emergence of Tukur as party chairman had nothing to do with his aspiration even as many of his supporters are clamoring for a run into the emerging grand coalition.

Spokesman of Atiku Campaign Organization, Mallam Garba Sheu when contacted told Sunday Tribune that the former Vice President remained a bonafide, loyal member of the PDP, adding “we remain in PDP.”

The situation within the Babangida camp is however slightly different especially as the former leader has officially announced exit from politicking unlike vice president Abubakar who is still active in the field.

As at the last count, more than three bigwigs of the Babangida camp have crossed into the ACN especially in the southern part of the country. This is in addition to the spokesman of the Minna General, Kashim Afegbua who is now in the frontline of campaign for the re-election of Governor Adams Oshiomhole.

It was however gathered that despite the recent defections, the former leader has not directed his loyalists to join the emerging coalition.

Sources within the opposition however reconfirmed that contacts have been made with the Babangida group and that some strategic networking is ongoing as the coalition talks progress.

“We have contacted the General and we are having progress. We are reaching out to all well meaning Nigerians,” a CPC leader from Enugu state confided in the Sunday Tribune.

APGA splits over merger
While the merger leaders are reaching out to some leaders of the PDP, fresh reports are emerging of a rift within the All Progressive Grand Alliance on the proposed merger of leading opposition parties against the ruling party in 2015.

The South East caucus of the party heavily influenced by the Anambra State governor, Peter Obi, is said to be opposed to the anti-PDP coalition while the northern wing of the party is said to be favorably disposed to the coalition.

It was learnt that party leaders within the South East saw APGA as an Igbo political party with network support provided for it by the Movement for the Actualization of the Sovereign State of Biafra, a position being disputed by the northern wing of the party.

Igbo wing of the party was said to have insisted on a silent agreement between South East and South South leaders which led to massive support for president Goodluck Jonathan in the 2011 poll and which many are hoping to repeat in the 2015 polls.

Leaders of both ACN and CPC in the South East are however said to be working hard to convince their brothers within APGA to join the alliance, an effort that has so far yielded no result.

The failure of the effort was reported to have led to an emerging division within the party which saw the northern wing of the party led by the party`s National Secretary, Sani Shinkafi to publicly announce the decision of the 19 northern states to join the merger even without waiting for a decision of the party`s national executive committee.

Meanwhile, the All Nigerian Peoples Party has urged a low profile approach to the ongoing merger talk among the opposition political parties for the effort to achieve desired results.

National Publicity Secretary of the party, Chief Emma Enekwu who spoke with Sunday Tribune over the issue noted that the party does not believe any noise should be made about the merger talk especially in view of past experiences in alliance talk among opposition parties.

“We are not opposed to the merger talks but we are not given to so much noise being made about it, he said.

“Merger is not a child’s play,” he said, adding that “a lot of work still needs to be done if we are to achieve success on this project.”
It would be recalled that ANPP had in the past entered into a government of national unity agreement with the ruling party ,a development that forced the national leader of the Congress for Progressive Change, Muhammad Buhari to quit the party.
