'You're not so hot now': What gunman told stranger after shooting him 'without mercy' over row in McDonald's queue


Two gunmen have been given life sentences for shooting a stranger dead after a row in a queue at McDonald’s.

Horace Campbell, 28, and Liam Douglas-O’Callaghan, 18, were found guilty of murdering Devon Scarlett, 32.

Old Bailey judge Richard Hawkins said a 'trivial argument' had escalated in half-an-hour to the execution of the father of four.

Campbell followed Mr Scarlett into an alley and shot the victim twice before saying: 'You are not so hot now'.

Campbell was jailed for life with a minimum term of 32 years. Douglas-O’Callaghan was ordered to be detained during Her Majesty’s Pleasure with a minimum term of 18 years.

Judge Hawkins told them: 'The two of you quickly despatched Devon Scarlett without mercy.'

Mr Scarlett and Campbell got into an early morning spat involving others at the fast-food restaurant in Brixton, south London, in April 2010.

They were escorted outside by security guards, but the row carried on and the two strangers agreed to meet in a nearby street for a shoot-out, said Bobbie Cheema, prosecuting.

The court heard that Mr Scarlett had become involved in 'someone else’s argument' in McDonald’s at around 6.30am on April 17 last year.

Outside, Mr Scarlett was heard saying he had been shown disrespect, and Campbell said Mr Scarlett was 'going to be shot in the head'.

When people tried to intervene, Campbell told them Mr Scarlett had been 'too disrespectful and was going to be shot in the head' and would be 'filled up with lead'.

A woman had heard them agreeing to meet in the nearby street, 'effectively for a shoot-out', jurors were told.

Detective Inspector Henry Lindsley said: 'Unbelievably, Devon Scarlett’s murder was triggered by the most minor of incidents that Horace Campbell chose to involve himself in.

'His arrogance and obvious disregard for life is evident when, even after Mr Scarlett walked away from him, he continued spoiling for a fight.'

Dozing air passengers face the prospect of being rudely awakened by someone talking loudly on their mobile phone after Virgin Atlantic became the first British airline to permit calls on board flights today.

While the news may be warmly welcomed by businessmen and others for whom it is important to keep connected at all times, anti-noise campaigners claim the decision is 'crazy'.

From today passengers flying between London and New York on Virgin's new A330 Airbus will be able to not only make calls, but also to send and receive text messages, emails and have web access via GPRS.

Val Weedon of the anti-noise action group Noisedirect said the organisation receives a steady stream of complaints from people annoyed by mobile phone users on trains and coaches and was against the decision to expand permitted usage to aeroplane flights.

She said: 'Noise is noise and the impact is no different in any situation. Noise is a trigger for stress. The heart rate increases and it can cause to all sorts of health problems. There have been lots of studies finding links between noise and stress.

It will cost £1 per minute to call aboard the flight and 20p to send a text. Virgin Atlantic said the system was aimed at business travelers needing to make an urgent call to the office or for people wanting to get a message home.

Steve Griffiths, Chief Operating Officer at Virgin Atlantic said: 'Many people will have experienced that moment when you’re about to take off on a 10-hour flight and you need to send an important message to the office, or even reminding a family member to feed the cat!

'It’s also quite fun to call home and say 'Guess where I am' – not many people would think you’re travelling at 35,000ft above the Atlantic Ocean.'

It will also feature on the airline’s Boeing 747 planes, which are currently going through a £50 million refurbishment. By the end of 2012, nearly 20 aircraft will provide the service.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

The system works using a small telecommunications base station called a piccell.

A picocell is low cost and typically the size of a ream of A4 paper.

It acts as a miniature mobile telephone tower communicating with mobile phones within the aircraft and relaying the signals to either satellites or a land-based system.

Communication between the picocell and the rest of the telephone network is on separate frequencies.

There is no interference with the aircraft's equipment as is the case with on–board phone systems already on many commercial aircraft.

Interference is reduced because both the picocell's and the phones' output power can be reduced to very low levels.

The announcement comes as Virgin Atlantic officially unveils its new aircraft – the Airbus A330-300, which is part of a £100m investment and features a redesigned First Class cabin with a ‘technology hub’ to connect a smart phone, USB or tablet device.

AeroMobile, which is part-owned by Panasonic are partners with Virgin Atlantic on the project. Passengers will be billed for the international roaming charges and the service is currently offered to customers with 02 or Vodafone networks.

Fellow Nigerians, please let’s leave politics for this week and discuss my primary constituency, showbiz. I’m always happy to see young people break barriers of poverty through creativity. This is why I have invested materially and otherwise in our talented youths since 1989 when Sir Shina Peters broke record charts with his monster album, Ace. I doubt if any other album has recorded such monumental success. For the first time, a Juju artiste captured all the major awards and took the front page of Nigeria’s biggest-selling Weekend Concord, edited at the time by Mike Awoyinfa. SHINAMANIA was the headline of my story and this became the title of Sir Shina’s next album.


Through my work, I would later interact and become officially or personally close to some of Nigeria’s greatest icons such as Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, Chief Commander Ebenezer Obey-Fabiyi, King Sunny Ade, Chief Sikiru Ayinde Barrister, Prof Kolington Ayinla, King Sonny Okosuns, Admiral Dele Abiodun, Ras Kimono, Onyeka Onwenu, Christie Essien-Igbokwe, Laolu Akins, Toni Okoroji, Evi Edna Ogholi, Queen Salawa Abeni, Tee Mac, King Wasiu Ayinde Marshall, Mike Okri, Alex Zitto, Mustapha Amego, Esse Agesse, Mandy Brown Ojugbana, The Mandators, Charly Boy, Adewale Ayuba, Abass Obesere, Alex O, Daniel Wilson, Blakky, Wasiu Alabi Pasunma, OJB Jezreel, Sammy Okposo and others. I have gone through this preamble to demonstrate my substantial interest in Nigerian music and showbiz in general. The essence of my piece today is to situate my position on the imbroglio between Don Jazzy and D’banj, two of Nigeria’s most influential artistes of the moment. I believe my first encounter with D’banj was in March 2005, when he performed at the Global Recognition Awards staged by my friend and Brother, Mayor Akinpelu. All I needed to convince me about the awesome talents of D’banj was this young man coming on stage blowing his hamonica with a passion and singing Mo Bo Lowo Won. I never danced in public like I did that day. This guy blew me apart and took me to Cloud 10. D’banj was that infectious.


After his performance, I asked Mayor where he got this guy from and he said Percy Ademokun, KWAM 1’s manager had pleaded with him to feature the guy who used to work with JJC & his 419 Squad in London. As a matter of fact, Mayor was reluctant to put D’banj on stage because that slot had been reserved for Sunny Neji who unfortunately did not turn up but thus created the chance for our young friend. From that moment, I took more than a cursory interest in this guy. I later learnt there was another young producer who was the pillar behind the D’banj rising stardom. His name was outstanding, Don Jazzy.


My first one-on-one contact with D’banj came one Sunday morning, when D’banj told my former Personal Assistant, Chichi of Africa, a songstress in her own right, that he would like to meet me. Chichi knew I was very fond of him and did not waste anytime in setting up the appointment. She picked him up and drove to Bay Dorchester hotel in Victoria Island where I was at the time. As soon as Chichi arrived, I asked where D’banj was and Chichi said he was waiting in the car. I asked why she had to keep our superstar in the car and Chichi said she needed to get clearance from me. D’banj came in and prostrated flat to me while I told him he didn’t have to do that. But he was a very humble Yoruba boy who understood the culture of his people. He brought out his cd and I gave him some amount of money and we became brothers from then onwards.


I must have been among his top ten fans. And swore by his name. The only artistes who had won me totally over like that were Sir Shina Peters, KWAM1, Adewale Ayuba and Tu Face Idibia. There was hardly anything I wouldn’t do for them. And each had touched my life in different ways. D’banj was next to them. In 2006, a friend of mine, Richard Senou, was running the presidential race in Benin Republic, and he asked me to invite my celebrity friends in Nigeria to help with his campaign. I quickly assembled my closest buddies like RMD, Zack Orji, Stella Damasus-Aboderin, Fred Amata, Tony Tetuilla, and of course D’banj to Cotonou. We took over the city and rocked the place like never before. D’banj could not join us the night before but still managed to come in the morning and I was very grateful.


Our next encounter was Ghana. I had persuaded Iyiola Ayoade, the CEO of Charterhouse Ghana and GhOne Television to invite D’banj and Don Jazzy to their annual Ghana Music Awards Festival. On arrival, I welcomed the powerful people from Nigeria at my home. D’banj and Don Jazzy came in with the doyen of entertainment, Kenny Keke Ogungbe and Dayo D1 Adeneye. It was such a dramatic evening at my place as the incredibly energetic D’banj showed off his acrobatic prowess and started somersaulting in my living room. He was just full of raw energy and blew his hamonica endlessly. Thereafter, he and Don Jazzy disappeared from our radar. We later heard they enjoyed the akwaaba hospitality in Ghana. The next time D’banj came to Ghana, he was with Dr Sid and they dropped by at my restaurant, The House of Ovation.


D’banj and the Mo Hits featured in the 2007 and 2008 Ovation Red Carol effortlessly. But thereafter fame and money chased them from every part of the globe. That was when we started drifting apart. It became difficult to communicate by telephone as numbers changed rapidly. Wande Cole became my boy and participated actively in the theme song for the Ovation Red Carol of 2009. But I never stopped praying for D’banj and Don Jazzy in particular. Theirs was a marriage made in heaven. A break-up would spell doom of tragic proportions for both of them. I was always elated anytime I read interviews granted by D’banj in which he poured encomiums on Don Jazzy and referred to him as the boss though he was older than Don.


I had the last chance to advise them on a trip from South Africa to Nigeria. The engine of our plane had suddenly failed as we were taking off and the flight had to be dangerously aborted. Sammie Okposo was with us and he was visibly rattled. The problem engine was later fixed and we had chance to discuss the music industry in Nigeria. I was relatively assured that theirs was a solid union. I gave examples of big stars who had perished due to one mismanagement of fame or money or both. My favourite example was that of the Spice Girls. They had it all wrapped up. Fans camped outside their hotels for nights while on world tour. My ultimate idol Michael Jackson got terribly broke after all that gargatuan popularity and fabulous wealth. I told the story of how Chief MKO Abiola described poverty as the most stubborn animal and that you must never throw the cane with which you beat it away because it will always come back. Every fall in life begins with a wrong move.


D’banj and Don Jazzy were brothers from another mother. I don’t know how and why they allowed the devil to come between them. In the whole of Africa, only the twin Brothers, Peter and Paul, of P’Square enjoyed better or equal supremacy. Reading the exclusive interview D’banj granted Ayeni The Great recently, Mo Hits must have made too much money. In the process, my brothers must have forgotten the truism that wherever too much money is gathered the demon must make itself Executive Chairman. They obviously did not see the omnipotent demon walk into their lives. If they did they would have fought tooth and nail to chase it back to the pit of help. No lizard can enter a wall that had no crack in the first instance.


I’m extremely saddened by this unfortunate saga. There is nothing as crazy as two bossom friends fighting and going their separate ways. Husbands and wives do fight. The tongue and the mouth are no exception. It is a rule of life. But we must always try as much as possible to manage our differences. Wealth and women are often the causes of problems between friends but these guys had more than enough of both and could have ignored their worst adversary. I don’t know what roles their closest friends played in this disastrous separation but I believe it would have helped if they intervened at the right time. I read somewhere that a few important personalities tried to settle the rift but were unsuccessful. It is a big shame that we lost what could easily have been the biggest crew in African music. It is possible that individually they can start all over and blow up their individual talents again. But that type of merry-go-round would have been unnecessary. There’s a great lesson in this experience for other artistes planning to kill their brands to start from the very beginning. I learnt from Chinua Achebe that when things fall apart the centre don’t usually hold.


I really pray that God continues to bless their hustle so as not to turn theirs into an Israelite journey when you spend 40 years on a trip that should have taken 40 days.

Buhari’s call for a revolution


Former military head of state and presidential candidate of the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) in the 2011 elections, General Muhammadu Buhari, warned recently that a bloody revolution was imminent in the country if the ruling People’s Democratic Party (PDP) failed to ensure social justice for all citizens.

Furthermore, he warned that “by 2015, whoever stole public funds has automatically sentenced himself to death.” He did not elaborate.

Buhari, who was speaking at a public function in Kaduna, decried the sordid revelations that emanated from the recent National Assembly probe of the petroleum subsidy as well as the pensions fund, which exposed the ruling party as presiding over the massive looting of the public treasury, running into hundreds of billions of naira, with some of the looters allegedly keeping as much as N2 billion cash in their homes – while ordinary citizens “are dying in their thousands.”

He urged his supporters to ensure that in the next general election, their votes would not be stolen through rigging. “We believe that the PDP leadership is not prepared for real democracy,” Buhari declared.

The ruling party has dismissed the CPC leader’s warnings as evidence of his personal frustration as a serial electionloser, rejected repeatedly at the polls by Nigerians. The PDP’s National Publicity, Chief Olisah Metuh, also described the retired general as a “despot with an aversion for democratic governance.”

Irritating as Buhari’s comments understandably are to the PDP-led government, there are grounds to find justifications for his concerns. In our view, the point Buhari seeks to make is that a government that entrenches corruption and social injustice, and yet ensures that it perpetuates itself in power by hook or crook can only invite a revolution by the people, to throw off their yoke.

Although chieftains and apologists of the ruling PDP have usually responded to such warnings by stating that a revolution like the one predicted may consume even those wishing for it (and there could be some truth in this claim), the Muhammadu Buhari warning is, nevertheless, one not to be taken lightly, as the government seems to be doing. Rather, we think the government should take the warning in good faith as a wake-up call to urgently institute good governance by ensuring ‘the security and welfare of the people’ – its primary responsibility under the Constitution. Currently, the people are having a raw deal at the hands of the government in power. Daily reports of bribery and corruption have riddled virtually all agencies and departments of the Nigerian state, revealing that the executive and legislative functionaries thrown up by the ruling party are defective in character and reputation. Compounding the tragedy is the pervasive ineptitude of the government in grappling with its core duties – especially guaranteeing the people’s security and socio-economic welfare.

Unfortunately, the existing opposition parties have failed to demonstrate that they can do any better than the ruling PDP. What alternative strategies, for example, have the opposition parties put forward to remedy the present protracted crises in road infrastructure, electric power, security, education and health care? How convincingly have they articulated their political manifestoes to the electorate? What superior democratic practices have they inculcated in their own internal processes? All that the other parties seem to be preoccupied with, instead, is how to wrest power from the ruling party – not how to deal with the scourge of corruption tormenting the citizenry, or how to guarantee stability and security in the country.

The decay and confusion in the opposition camp, including Buhari’s CPC, only go to worsen the gloom hanging over the country. The PDP should therefore seize its fate in its own hands by consciously selecting, for future elections, only such candidates within the party as are known to have track records of sterling character and outstanding performance, who can help to rescue the party and avert a looming threat of violent change, as predicted by the CPC leader.

President Goodluck Jonathan himself had indeed alluded, last year, to the possibility of a revolution in the country, similar to the Arab Spring. It is up to the ruling class – the party in government and the opposition alike – to take concrete steps to stem the swelling tide of popular anger, frustration and disenchantment convulsing the land.

No Nigerian city or place concentrates the minds of its citizens more than the city of Lagos. Like London or New York, Lagos is the most beloved and reviled by Nigerians. It is seen, in the words of poet and former British Prime Minister Benjamin Disraeli, as the beautiful and damned.

It is the brook of hope and the harmattan of despair. It hoists the nation’s blue-blood – the breed of plutocrats manifesting a feathery excess of the rich, extravagant, pompous, vain - with the best of sartorial profanity and architectural splendour. These boasts lie across the humblest of the world - the teeming poor, sweaty with hope but abiding in despair, bundles of vitality, boisterous with cheer and pain.

In between are coddled its most resourceful beings - toiling, thinking and unthinking, striving, subversive and accommodating, fierce and fearless, innovating, multiplying the hopes of geniuses, looking both to heaven and earth simultaneously. They abide in the reflected glory of the plutocrats and the seedy gloom of the poor. They live in the delicate line of misery between the rich and poor. They are sometimes mischievously called the middle class but reject all appellations: the subversive hate such pigeon-holing.

Yet, when you cut through all these chaos, you note that Lagos is Nigeria’s ultimate rhythm, its quintessential city, its residents Nigeria’s quintessential people. It is our indispensable place. In terms of hard work, no place encases that ethic. Nothing tells the story of development more than this city.

But for me, it is Nigeria’s place of hope. Its history alone tells its theme. It battled from its founding with the idea that it can never be a monolith, held by a family, dominated by monarch or even enthralled by an invader. Hence, it is the best place where progress is an ethic today.

Remember the story of the Bini kingdom and how it took over the place, but not for long. The city became its own, cosmopolitan, vibrant, fierce like a melting pot.

While the Edo met the Awori - the Youbas there - it never became a Bini town, but a town for all who could strive and gain. When Akintoye was ousted as king, by slave trader Kosoko, the wrong subversive fell by the logic of history to the rightful owner.

Lagos has thus with a small population absorbed the largest gathering of black people in any one place on earth. Thanks to its fairness and the Yorubas who are the best in accommodating strangers anywhere in Nigeria, every people, every faith, every ideological tendency feels a sense of belonging here more than anywhere in the country.

No surprise it has always insisted on the best at its helm. Johnson, Jakande, Marwa, Tinubu, Fashola are examples of the best of breeds. Anytime undistinguished ones were in charge, like Rasaki, Akhigbe, Oyinlola, etc, Lagos sagged. When Lagos sagged, the rest of the country sagged.

Today, Lagos is a state of example, showing the path to the others in all parameters. In an age of oil, it is the richest without a single drop of black gold. Without a farm, it is the biggest agricultural market. Without many raw materials, it is the industrial mecca. It hosts the best actors, musicians, technocrats, students. It is the city of the breast milk, where others must suckle or faint.

That was my sense when I attended the Lagos Economic Summit recently, where Governor Babatunde Raji Fashola reeled out indices and the way forward for Lagos. Lagos has become the city of example. Other governors have looked and want to show similar flair in their places.

But Lagos has shown one important thing about the capacity to develop in Nigeria. We can make money where it seems the sea is dry. Lagos in the military era thought it was impossible to make more than N600 million a month in internally generated revenue (IGR), thus dooming the state to a snail of progress. Between 1999 and the end of Tinubu tenure it rose to about N9 billion and under Fashola to about N15 billion. This is the show of prowess in governance. Other governors today concede in public that Fashola is the first among equals. Some other states like Edo, Ekiti, Rivers, Sokoto and Osun are doing a good job of boosting their IGRs, which is a good sign. State of Osun Governor Aregbesola recently announced how, through ingenuity, he has turned the state from red to black in less than two years with over N30 billion for development.

Lagos is attracting more people here than anywhere, including Abuja. The burden on infrastructure, schools, housing and environment is enormous, and that means that one governor is carrying the burdens of others.

Hence, it is necessary to see the challenges of Lagos as those of Nigerians. If Lagos, first under Tinubu and now under Fashola, did not up its revenue and show doggedness in vision and development, Lagos would have worsened in many areas: environment with the mountain of refuse, infrastructure stifling the majority, hunger on a high scale, and the many homeless.

Its allocation cannot pay its wage bills, so Lagos would have been like many states that cannot afford its minimum wage burden. The doctors have the temerity of strike for quite the reason that Lagos is a rich state as though the state resources are for them alone.

Like President Bush Snr. called for a special status for China, whose evidence we see today, so too do I call for a special status for Lagos in the federation. It is Nigeria’s indispensable city. It has been the nation’s lightening rod, taking the burdens of others.

Lagos does not develop only for itself but for Nigeria. That is the logic of New York as well as London. Lagos ought to develop with a lot more federal money so it can build into a powerful business and infrastructure hub. It can be like our New York and London with enormous influence on the surrounding states up to Kwara State. When a senator, now vice president, Joe Biden travelled in a train from Delaware to Washington daily. A scenario like that will ease the traffic in Lagos, expand businesses and real estate potential in states like Oyo, Ogun, Osun, Kwara, Kogi, Ekiti, Ondo and Edo. A friend once said that on a clear road, he can reach Benin city in less than four hours. We need an infrastructure state of being as policy. Lagos has begun this. Infrastructure is a development. It is about innovation and promise.

Fashola is constructing a number of such roads and has done quite a few of them. But it takes money and collaboration to do this. During Obasanjo’s tenure, Tinubu developed the idea of a train from Lagos to Abuja, and that could take commuters a couple of hours. But it was scuttled. Obasanjo resisted and almost scuttled the IPP, which has become a song today though rendered like a dirge.

Lagos is the state of example. From New York, many surrounding states, including New Jersey, derive their prosperity. Ditto London. We need that today for Lagos. We have seen Governor Rotimi Amaechi do quite an outstanding job with infrastructure, education and environment, and he has unveiled the vision of a greater Port Harcourt to ease the burden of the city. Soyinka recently praised Godswill Akpabio’s work in education, but the Akwa Ibom Governor has received plaudits too for outstanding infrastructure work.

We cannot downplay the influence of Lagos and we must not let it slide to London of the era of poet William Blake when he saw only “marks of weakness, marks of woe… in every voice, in every ban/mind-forged manacles I hear.”

Lagosians say “Eko oni baje” meaning “Lagos will not rot.” Fashola is seeing to that. But the progress of Lagos is all Nigeria’s.

Nigerians spend huge in UK shops

Nigerian businessman Godwin Patrick took a three-week holiday to the U.K. this month to visit his British-based cousins. It wasn’t the only reason for his trip.

“I’m here to shop,” the 38-year-old said on London’s Oxford Street, clutching bags from Marks & Spencer Group Plc (MKS) and Associated British Foods Plc’s (ABF) Primark containing underwear and trousers for himself, and dresses for his family in Lagos.

Patrick is a regular visitor to London, where retailers are fully accustomed to Nigerian shoppers. The African country was the fourth-biggest contributor to overseas tax-free shopping in the U.K. last year, behind only China, Russia and the Middle East, according to tourism services provider Global Blue U.K.

A growing Nigerian population in the U.K. and more-frequent direct flights between the countries has led to an influx of visitors who have more to spend because of a booming oil-driven economy.

“Nigerian travelers are very particular to the U.K.; you’d never see them as a top-10 nationality in other markets,” said Richard Brown, vice-president of Global Blue U.K., which runs a network that enables foreign shoppers to claim back value-added tax. In total, Nigerians “spend more as a total business than Americans do,” he said.

Visitors from the U.S. are the sixth- biggest shopping group. Retailers in London are particularly dependent on overseas shoppers. Foreigners account for a third of spending in the English capital’s shopping district of Bond Street, Oxford Street and Regent Street and will spend more than 2 billion pounds ($3.2 billion) this year, according to the New West End Co., which represents 600 retailers in the area. Spending by Nigerians in U.K. shops rose 32 percent last year, according to Global Blue, which declined to disclose their expenditure. Visitors from the West African country accounted for 6 percent of the U.K.’s foreign retail spending in March, the researcher said.

Unlike mostly luxury-seeking Russian and Middle Eastern tourists, Nigerian visitors also want to spend their money at mass-market chains such as Marks & Spencer and Debenhams Plc, (DEB) where they can obtain better quality products than at home.

“There is a misconception that they just come here for middle- or lower-value items, but they shop across all brands from mass-market high street right up to department-store and luxury brands as well,” said Global Blue’s Brown.

Nigerian visitors spend an average of about 450 pounds per individual transaction, compared with more than 1,000 pounds by Middle Eastern customers, Global Blue said.

At Debenhams’ store on London’s Oxford Street, Nigerians provide the biggest source of overseas spending as they seek out perfume and moisturizer gift sets, British-themed products like a 20-pound union-jack printed teapot, clothing and shoes, according to spokeswoman Ruth Attridge.

Multilingual signs advertising discounts at the store are printed not only in Chinese and Arabic, but also Hausa, a Nigerian language. Living in Britain The popularity of the U.K. as a shopping destination for Nigerians partly reflects the growth in the number of people from the country living in Britain. About two-thirds of shoppers are on holiday or visiting family and friends, while a third are traveling for business, according to Global Blue.

The U.K. Office for National Statistics estimates that 174,000 Nigerians lived in the U.K. between July 2010 and June 2011, the ninth-largest nationality. That’s an increase of 34,000 compared with three years earlier. Daily flights from Lagos by airlines such as British Airways Plc are also fueling shopper journeys.

The London-based carrier allows Nigerian passengers an additional 23-kilogram suitcase compared with the majority of its flights. Air Nigeria plans to start flights to London’s Gatwick airport this month.

Economic Expansion

Wealth among Nigeria’s elite has increased since the turn of the century as the former British colony has become Africa’s top oil producer, spurring economic expansion.

The country’s gross domestic product grew 7.7 percent in the fourth quarter year over year, according to the Abuja-based National Bureau of Statistics, compared with the prior quarter’s 7.4 percent gain. While the African nation may be better off than before it gained its independence from Britain in 1960, its shopping facilities aren’t of a standard to compare with the U.K. “In Nigeria, there is very little formal retail,” said Siemon Scamell-Katz, global consulting director at researcher TNS.

“So in terms of retail, Primark and Marks & Spencer is quite something if you haven’t come across much retail before.” That’s true of Patrick, who said it’s “the quality and the pricing” of London’s stores that keep him coming back. “We don’t have the same standard of retailing,” he said.

Nigeria’s all-time highest goal scorer, Rashidi Yekini, who died on Friday, was yes-terday buried like a ‘commoner’ in his Ira village in Kwara State, without his colleagues in the national team in attendance. He was aged 49.

Apart from Ike Shorun-mi, ex-Super Eagles goal-keeper, the graveside was devoid of any high profile footballer, including his colleagues to the USA ’94 FIFA World Cup.Yekini, while in the national team, had scored a total of 37 goals in 58 matches while he became the first Nigerian to win the African Footballer of the Year in 1993.

Yekini’s 37 goals for the national team is still a re-cord that is yet to be broken. He also scored the first goal for Nigeria at the 1994 World Cup, against Bulgaria, a match which the country won 3-0.

Also, no official of the Nigerian Football Fed-eration (NFF) was sighted during the burial rite witnessed mostly by locals in his native home. But the solemn event was, however attended by a former Secretary-General of the Nigeria Football Association, Chief Taiwo Ogunjobi.

Also during the poorly attended burial, Yekini’s remains were put inside a rough wooden coffin devoid of any adornment. He was lowered into the grave at 4pm.

Furthermore, there was no ceremony to indicate that a star was being buried.

The Jinnizah prayers for the deceased was led by the Chief Imam of the town, Sheikh Sheu Tijani Giwa and supported by other Muslim clerics from the town.

In his sermon after the burial, the Chief Imam, Sheikh Giwa said that, every soul will taste death no matter the time.He said that everybody should do good things as if they would not wake up the next day.

Sheikh Giwa added that people should remember that life temporary and, “we must endeavour to do good and worship God because nobody knows the time he or she will die on this earth”.

The Chief Imam who sympathised with the people of the town, footballers, federal and state governments, however prayed Allah to grant him eternal rest.

While speaking with newsmen at Ira yesterday on the demise of Yekini, Ogunjobi, said, “It was sad that he (Yekini) died at a young age”.He said that the deceased had contributed to the development of Shooting Stars of Ibadan and the national team during his period.

“Two months ago, I was driving along Ring Road, Ibadan with one of my friends and he (Yekini) saw us and stopped and we ex-changed pleasantries and later, we called each other after that day and I was so shocked when I heard of his death yesterday (Friday) in Ibadan,” he said.

Ogunjobi added, “He (Yekini) was discovered by Segun Odegbami and me while on playing tours of Kaduna in 1981 and since then, Yekini has grown to be the biggest star when it comes to goal scoring in Ni-geria and Africa.”

He, however, called on “the Federal Government, the Shooting Stars of Ibadan and South-West governors to immortalise him, and not by naming any mushroom stadium after him but by putting in place structure or programme that will be of great attraction to foreigners in this country”.

The state governor, Al-haji Abdulfatah Ahmed in his reaction said, “He received with great shock and disbelief, the sudden and untimely death of one of the most finest and dedicated football players Nigeria has ever produced, Rashidi Yekini”.

The statement which was signed by Chief Press Secretary to Governor Ab-dulfatah Ahmed, Alhaji Abdulwahab Oba said, “During his (Yekini) active days the late Yekini demonstrated uncommon skills on the field of play and commit-ment to the Nigerian project that he was known not only in Nigeria but across the African continent as a great footballer”.

The royal father of the ancient town, Oba Oyetunji Oyewale Oyetoro, described the death of Yekini as shocking and painful to the people of Ira, Kwara State and the country in particular.

He said that Yekini’s name had boosted the image of the town and he would ever be remembered.

Oba Oyetoro, who called on the Federal Government to immortalise him like it was done for Teslim Balogun, said such gesture would motivate more Nigerian footballers to contribute more to the development of football rather than love of money.

Also yesterday, Sports Writers Association of Nigeria, Kwara State Coun-cil, described the death of Yekini as a big loss to the country, noting however that the association was consoled that the football legend came, saw and con-quered.The Osun State gover-nor, Mr. Rauf Aregbesola, in his reaction yesterday described the death of Yekini as shocking.

He called for the setting up of an endowment fund for the family of the deceased. Aregbesola, how-ever, announced the sum of N1 million contribution of the state government towards the endowment.

In his reaction too, the National Secretary of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola, who said that he was not aware of the sickness of the deceased lamented that his death was a great shock to soccer development.

Oyinlola, who was an early caller at Ira to sym-pathise with family of the deceased, however, called on sports administrators to take care of ex-footballers so as to encourage the upcoming ones to develop soccer in the country.

Present at the burial were Ogunjobi, Shorunmu, the Ondo chairman of NFA, the members of ABS FC of Ilorin, Kwara United players, Commissioner for Information in Kwara State, Prince Tunji Moronfoye; Osun State Commissioner for Sports, Dr. Stephen Kola Balogun, representative of National Sports Commission, Mr. Stephen Olarinoye, and other sports men and women across the country.

Overall its a tremendous phone and yes Samsung has done it once again, A new king of Android has born and we look forward to see people experiencing this phone. GS3 would be available at 29th of May 2012 in Europe in two colours (Marble white and Pebble blue). The 3G version will later hit Middle East, Russia and Latin America. The secret for long relationships is not having a perfect and harmonious love affair.
